"Will it work with other versions of Doom, like Final Doom?" Although written specifically for Ultimate Doom, Doom Z is compatible with Final Doom, as well as previous editions of Doom. Doom Z is not compatible with Doom 95. If you are using a registered version of Doom 95, you will need to obtain a copy of the DOS version of Doom and use it with your registered DOOM.WAD file when installing Doom Z. The shareware version of Doom is available from id Software's Archive Page. After installing the shareware version, copy your registered DOOM.WAD from Doom 95 into the shareware Doom folder, delete the unregistered DOOM1.WAD file, and install Doom Z into the same folder. Dos command line installation.Download DOOMZ98.ZIP into your Doom directory. DOOMZ98.ZIP is a PKZIP 2.0-compatible archive, and can be extracted using PKUNZIP (using the syntax pkunzip doomz98.exe). If you have a previous version of Doom Z already installed, answer "yes" when asked whether to overwrite existing files. Once all the files are unpacked, it is safe to erase the DOOMZ98.ZIP file. Run the INSTALL.BAT file. If this is the first time you are installing a Doom Z type of patch, answer "yes" when asked to make a duplicate copy of your Doom executable. If everything is working correctly, you should now be able to play the converted game. Windows 95/98 and NT installation.Download DOOMZ98.ZIP into a temporary folder. Using Winzip or a similar unzipping utility, extract the files from the DOOMZ98.ZIP archive and put them into your Doom folder. If you have a previous version of Doom Z already installed, answer "yes" when asked whether to overwrite existing files. Once all the files are unpacked, it is safe to erase the DOOMZ98.ZIP file. Now run the INSTALL.BAT file. If this is the first time you are installing a Doom Z type of patch, answer "yes" when asked to make a duplicate copy of your Doom executable. If everything is working correctly, you should now be able to PLAY the converted game by double-clicking on the PLAY.BAT file. If you plan to play the game with some regularity, you may want to consider dragging the PLAY.BAT icon onto the desktop or to the Start button to make it easier to find next time. |
