A generalized query, such as Joseph Smith, will produce a larger list of files which contain all instances of your query string; including endnotes and links. Entering a more detailed query, such as Palmyra Revival, will usually produce a smaller list of files with more specific results. In addition, excluding such words as "the," "and," or "of" from the query will also help to refine the results of your search.
