There're the Simpson Springs campgrounds along the Pony Express trail, and I imagine any number of other places as well. We're thinking sometime in early September. I propose the 5th and 6th if we want two full days of riding, otherwise the 4th and 5th if we want to head out after work on a Friday. Who else would be up for this? -- Mike P.S. Fishing was great, lots of albino trout so they are easy to spot. biting on powerbait and nightcrawlers. The road was a little washboard, but not too bad. Flowers and cool air excellent. Would recommend it for anyone looking for cool air above Kamas. Camping area was a little crowded, so camp elsewhere in the forest and avoid the camp fees. After Saturday, I had to take another ride late Sunday afternoon. Went back over Guardsman to Midway and then back over to American Fork Canyon. Traffic over Guardsman to the Midway turn-off was bit heavy and consequently dusty. Not bad from their to Midway. Traffic on over to American Fork was heavier than I would expect considering the condition of the road. It is rough and rocky in sections and again dusty if you have to follow or meet traffic. The 650 was a delight with good lugging and pulling in second gear with an occasional spurt in third. The suspension handled the rocks, dips, and my weight without bottoming(finally got the pre-load pumped up enough I guess). Round trip from-to the house was 84 miles in a few minutes over three hours. Regards, and thanks.. Are there any other Chain-gang types around that want to go with? I know the Francis peak roads and Session mountains pretty good and we can decide when we are there on the technical sections up to scott lakes. There were (my estimate) about 85-90 people who showed up over the weekend. Food was, as always, excellent but the Saturday night meal was truly outstanding. No awards were given for largest club, but everyone should know that the Friese's are now OFFICIAL OLD FARTS. Yup, that's right- -at the Saturday night awards ceremony Dave and Joan won the award for the oldest combined couple (rider + passenger + age of bike). 'Course, there weren't all that many couples there... :^) :^) Several of the BB present won prizes, and Bob Jensen made a surprise appearance late Saturday night, having detoured there on his way home from Sturgis (ever hear a K12RS go "Potato Potato...???). In addition to yours truly, the following were present: John Sherfy Tom Deaver & Sam Dave & Joan Friese Bob Friese Alan Jensen Bob Jensen Bob Valline Bob Carleson Phil Mortensen Paul Barber (looking for brother Dave, who was home with a bad back) Anne Larson I know I have forgotten at least a couple of people--if you know who they are please add them to the list. My original plans were to ride up very early on Thursday, but things got hectic at home and work so did not leave until 10:00 or so. Tom Deaver and Sam were going to meet me in Logan and ride up together, but I missed them when I jumped in the shower at 9:20 and thought they'd been there and left while I was cleaning up. At Pocatello I had to stop and fix an oil leak (my fault) and clean up the mess on my riding suit and boots. I arrived at the rally site early evening, just in time to grab a burger and set up the tent before a five- minute rain shower hit. Friday morning was another five-minute shower before settling into a beautiful day. Saturday the weather was again sunny and fair so I had a nice ride over to Banks and back. On Sunday I rode home with John Sherfy and Bob Jensen, an enjoyable ride home from a very relaxing weekend. You missed a good weekend if you weren't at the Stomp... Date: 17 Aug 1998 01:12:44 -0600 Went for a great ride on Friday. I got the idea from the last ride Thane and I took past Mill Hollow res. At the summit is a road that points you toward Strawberry. One sign says 11 miles, the other says 18. Anyway, the majority of the road is smooth, packed dirt. An easy 25-30 mph lope. Winds through pine and aspen groves. The later 5 miles of the road got a little rocky, and in places, soft from a recent grading. I had a minor get-off, going about 3 mph around a downhill left turn. The front tire pegged left on me and slid out. I had time to push myself off the bike as it fell on its left side. Total damage was a slightly twisted ankle and a bruised hip. The bike was completely unscathed. Luckly, I only had a quarter of a tank of gas (only about 75 miles :-) ), so the bike was easy to pick back up. -- Mike and the intrepid R100GS/PD (all and all, I think my favorite bike this season.) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jeb Berg Subject: Re: BB: To bee or not to bee ? We sold our two up Harley for the F650 an= d never looked back. Along with the options listed below add a Stay-in-Tun= e exhaust and pick up a lot of extra torque and about 5-8 hp. The only better handling bike I have is an RS-250 but the F650 is close and gravel= doesn't bother it. We even added a dog seat on the back so the three of c= an look "cool" going down the highway (the dog is afraid of the 916)./jimc wrote:edwardnrobinson@mindspring.com > In response to the question about a good second bike to join a > 916, someone suggested a big dual purpose bike for its total > change of riding position, etc. > > One widely overlooked bike is the BMW F650. Tim came in from Reno on Saturday afternoon and one more rider from Reno made it later that evening. Maybe the Nevada rider turnout would be higher next year if we invite them to their own campout? Bob - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jeb Berg Subject: BB: Longest Pit Stop Date: 31 Aug 1998 21:07:14 -0600 My special thanks goes out to Thane for taking off work and driving 600 miles round trip to rescue me and my GS. After following Bob and Dave for 400 miles, them on the K1200RS and me on my GS we got to Carlin and the left cylinder just died. Made it to the gas station and the three of us proceeded to look fore the problem. Plug out and it sparked. Injector out and it sprayed. Valve cover off and all is perfect. After the ride back to the shop with Thane,we found Chip waiting. Checked compression and it was ok.--NO WAY! Chip put in two new plugs and it started and ran like a scalded dog.(yes we did test and found spark on the old ones) I now carry two spare plugs---Could have been worse had it given up on that "Loneliest Road in America." Thanks again to Thane for the rescue and BobJensen and Dave William for helping that night. Also to Chip for the guidance from afar.
