One cannot go to Gerlach without taking a liesurely ride or stroll down "Guru Lane" or visiting the paint pots. Date: 05 Sep 1998 22:32:05 -0600 BBers, After a cleaning spree in my office at home, I came across the Harley Davidson 1997 Yearly Report buried deep in the wreckage. After a bit of light reading, I thought I'd share a litte of what I read, though it's not strictly BMW content. In 1997, Harley sold $1,762,569,000 worth of merchandise. Of that money, a whopping 58.8% of that was domestic motorcycle sales, and only 5.4% of that was in merchandise (Tee Shirts, Vests, etc.). This goes in the face of my thinking that they made all of their money off of merchadising. Now, for the obligitory BMW content. In North America, BMW accounts for a whopping 2.4% of motorcycle sales, while Harley accounts for 48.3%. This is 30% above 2nd place Honda at 18.6%. Now, this is the interesting part. In Europe, BMW accounts for 12.6% of MC sales, while Harley accounts for 6.1% of MC sales. In other words, Harley has 3 times the market share in Europe as BMW does in the US. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THESE MACHINES? Alas, this simply means that I have a very exclusive bike. Off and on for the last two weeks the local constabulatory has had one of those radar speed signs set up at various locations as I travel to/from work. You know the signs I mean, the ones they usually post in school zones with a constant-on radar gun that checks your speed then displays it on the sign for all the world to see. Personally, I think the next release of these signs should include a special school zone edition that displays, in addition to your speed, a commentary upon the intelligence, moral character, and appearance of the passing driver, as determined by the degree of excess he/she is exhibiting in a school zone... at speeds below the limit a happy face is displayed.... but I digress. Anyway, I want to pose a query for our little group here. These signs only read in double digits. What happens if a passing vehicle exceeds the double-digit capacity of the sign??? Some possibilities could include, but not be limited to, the following: A. Both digits revert to zero. B. Both digits freeze at 99 C. Both digits begin counting anew at "01" D. Both digits begin to race uncontrollably until finally all the smoke leaks out of the sign and it ceases to function. What say you, A-D??? For the scientifically minded amongst us be it known that the Bobster has volunteered to test this next Tuesday afternoon on north Redwood Road. Tickets are $2.00 at the gate. See you there. If you're less than ten years old, you're so excited about aging that you think in fractions. "How old are you?" "I'm four and a half." You're never 36 and a half....you're four and a half going on 5. You get into your teens; now they can't hold you back. You jump to the next number. "How old are you?" "I'm gonna be 16." You could be 12, but you're gonna be 16. Eventually. Then the great day of your life; you become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony. You BECOME 21....Yes!!!!! Then you turn 30. What happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk. He TURNED; we had to throw him out. What's wrong? What changed? You BECOME 21; you TURN 30. Then you're PUSHING 40....stay over there. You REACH 50. You BECOME 21; you TURN 30; You're PUSHING 40; you REACH 50; then you MAKE IT to 60. By then you've built up so much speed, you HIT 70. After that, it's a day by day thing. You HIT Wednesday... You get into your 80's; you HIT lunch, you HIT 4:30. My Grandmother won't even buy green bananas. "Well, it's an investment, you know, and maybe a bad one." And it doesn't end there.... Into the 90's, you start going backwards. "I was JUST 92." Then a strange thing happens; if you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. "I'm 100 and a half." - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: k1thane@juno.com (Thane M Beckstrand) Subject: Re: BB: Steamboat Date: 22 Sep 1998 00:13:05 -0600 Mike... Sorry I missed you...would have enjoyed having some company. I guess I forgot to check the mail Friday morning before leaving for work, so missed your post. Left the shop about 11:00 and arrived in Steamboat at 5:00. I took twelve hours and 665 miles to get home today. I'll do almost anything to avoid traveling on hwy. 40 twice in one week-end. I thought I might break the string of the past two years of hitting rain on the Monday return, but no such luck as it surprised me after dark in Utah county. Going to make Kodachrome this next week-end? Regards, Thane _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. I guess I completely missed you at the races I saw chip, firese's and Jensen and others in the paddock area. I camped out at in the ski area which was pretty cool... some deer around. The way back was sunday afternoon I left around 3 kinda of a late start. Got hooked up with a Ducatti Peso from provo. from dinosaur on. We hit rain from fruitland on past strawberry around dusk and still rained as we went over daniel's summit and into heber/ Got kinda cold too. I had all my riding gear on, the microwave vest and rain gear. After heber is was sure dark and when I went towards coalville on 80 to 84... well they (DOT) got the new pavement down and it is really dark. I felt like my headlight was off the whole time. I quit raining on me around Echo and so I buzzed through morgan just to hit the 2 lane through Weber canyon. got to the house around 10 or so. So with rain it took 7 hours for the return trip. Fun anyway but a little nervous in the dark pavement. Saw one bambi Just before the const-bridge stoplight between Friutland and Strawberry. I got the deer whitsles on the k bike so it the crummy paint job doesent scare them the whistle will. or at least it gets them to look up an see how ugly my bike is. A couple of observations on steamboat from a first timer. 1. poor views of the track from any angle unless you were in a condo. 2. too small of a pit area, not enough grandstand seating around the track 3 no parking lot camping of any worth 4. too many condos and construction blocking the views. 5 nice friendly people in town and at the races 6 pretty light party atmosphere for steamboat compared to wintertime 7 lots of all kinds of bikes to look at on main street. 8 Shane Turpin goes really fast on that ducatti I cant make Kodachrome since We were in albuquerqe on thursday and drove back on friday. Diane and I are doing 3 rooms of carpet next week and that means painting and detal prep before installers get here. Besdides the ususal Shocks on the van and mowing the grass I am unfortunatly not going to make the K Basin trip. Hopefully it was dry and a good trip/turn out for everyone. Hey I sent my dues into the Beehive beamers but have yet to get a newsletter any clues on who I should call? The following are instructions for those that have never been to Hagermann. Take I-15 to Tremonton where it becomes I-84 proceed to Burley and Twin Falls. You will then come to an exit in Jerome. I always stop at the Chevron Station and get gas. You then proceed to the second Wendell exit, about 4 or 5 miles beyond the Jerome exit. That sign also says to Hagermann. Exit the freeway and you proceed west for about 10 to 12 miles. This road eventually dead ends and you have to turn either left or right. Turn left and proceed south. You will wind back toward the river and on your left in about 5 or six miles will be a sign for Sliger's Hot Springs. This is where the Idaho and Utah group will be parked. See you there. Crit -
