Come on now..... if you can pay your dues, and have an interest in motorcycles (BMW's being a plus), who bloody cares whether you currently own a BMW motorcycle or not. As long as you keep paying you dues, you can remain a member in good standing. What we are contemplating is that if you fail to re-purchase a BMW within a reasonable amount of time, your membership would become of the 'associate' variety, where you would have no vote in the club, nor could you become an officer. There is nothing un-reasonable about this, I have never been to a BMW rally that let you sponsor more than one non- BMW riding guest. This is so BMW's never fall below 50% at a rally. YOUR non- BMW friend is welcome at any club function, meeting campout or what have you. But we have a right to limit membership on any grounds that a majority of the people want. If people want a European Motorcycle club, I hereby volunteer to draft the by-laws for them, and I will joine, but it will not be the BMW club and if that were to happen, than I would suggest that we terminate the Beehive Beemers as per our articles of incorporation and bylaws. Apparently you did not read the article in the Stinger very carefully. This issue at hand was not if we should allow someone to become or remain a member of the Beehive Beemers if you do not own a BWM bike. The recommendation was to permit them to be an associate member without voting privileges or the ability to hold office. This is not about the ability to buy a BMW. It would open the door to anyone becoming a member to try it out. That door is not currently open. Read it again. I've also checked with some other friends who are members of clubs. Same there too. I apologize for any offense my original outburst may have caused. Being that this is the first club (other than technical clubs) that I have joined, these rules just surprised me. Michael - - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Jun 1998 11:11:56 -0600 From: "Michael Scott" Subject: BB: BMW Rally Tom, I am now seriously thinking of doing the BMW Rally, rather than Sturgis / Canada later this year. Sturgis will be too much of a conflict with my work schedule. What hotel are you guys staying at, and do you have a number? Or are you planning on camping? Any plans on when you guys are leaving? Maybe we could all do a group thing. Are you planning on staying the entire week? - - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Jun 1998 15:34:46 -0600 From: Michael Clark Subject: BB: MSF Course I spent last weekend at the MSF:RSS (Rider Skills and Safety). I decided to go with the basic course, rather than straight to the ERC for two reasons. First, I felt that it would do a better job of helping me find any fundamental bad habits I may have developed over the last 12 years. I'm self-taught, with nary a second of formal education. Second, I'm considering taking the IP (Instructors Preparation) and the RSS is required. The class started out on Thursday night at Murray High school. There was basic introduction to how motorcycles differed from cars (aside from the obvious differences), followed by instruction on the basic parts of the bike (including a video with a talking motorcycle :-) ). The best part was pantomiming mounting, upshifting and downshifting. I found this surprisingly difficult. I don't put shifting into words when I do it. I just do it. I had a very difficult time shifting slowly: Roll (off the throttle) Squeeze (the clutch) Lift (the gear shift lever) Ease (out the clutch) Roll (on the throttle) I could do this either very slowly (with much thinking about it), or very quickly (with no thinking about it), but had a hard time with rates in between. The first acronym (of many) was FINE-C: Fuel Ignition Neutral Engine cut-off switch. Clutch How to start the bike. Bad Habit #1: I usually do IC (leaving my petcocks in the on position). The real fun began Saturday, in the parking lot of the high school, under a constant drizzle. First, FINE-C is practiced on real bikes (mine was a Honda Nighthawk 250). Then, pushing the bikes, both mounted and dismounted. Then, pushing each other back and forth on the bikes!!! Arg, am I out of shape. I got paired up with a fellow 200+ lb., 6'5" rider. Serves me right for being a big guy. The purpose of the excersise was to acclimate you with moving and braking on the bike, without having to worry about operating all of the controls. After recovering from my near-death experience (pant, pant, pant), we started the bikes and rocked back and forth, finding the clutch's friction zone. After that, straight line riding, and finally, riding the perimeter of the course. As we're riding along, the instructors give you various hand signals and shouts. Another bad habit surfaced: Bad Habit #2: Covering the brake (specifically with two fingers). By the end of Saturday, we'd practiced turns, shifting, and engaging the clutch coming out of a corner. At 1:00, the class moved into the classroom again. Several more videos on safe riding habits. Another acronym SIPDE: Scan Interpret Predict Decide Execute Happily, my mental riding is pretty much up-to-snuff, with few bad habits, though there was one: Bad Habit #3: I sometimes just do SIP. Not always deciding what to do in the event of a sudden change of circumstance. Sunday was great. Advanced riding techniques: leaning, skidding, quick-stops, rolling through turns, swerving, stopping on a curve, stopping quickly on a curve, lane changes. On this day was discovered... Bad Habit #4: I don't look far enough into a turn. I should be looking beyond the exit point. Instead, I micro-correct throughout the turn, scanning back and forth throughout the turn from right in front of me, to about 30 yards ahead. This is a habit I've been trying to correct for some time now, it was just more pronounced in the classroom setting. This was kind of bizarre for me. In order to make a 180 degree turn, you start by looking at a right angle, and track your head all the way around. Looking that far ahead was a little disconcerting, but I quickly got used to it, and it definitely smoothed out my turns. Bad Habit #5: When properly looking through a turn, I tend to cut corners too tightly. This cost me points on the final evaluation. Bad Habit #6: I don't downshift while making quick stops. This should be done to allow you to quickly accelerate if the situation changes. Also cost me points in the evaluation. Other interesting things: This was the first time I'd ever done any weaving. I sucked at it. :-) Time for some practice. Many things, lane changes, slow turns off of a stop sign, smooth braking, up and down shifting - all a piece of cake. It was nice that I had the basic skills, it allowed me to concentrate more on learning and improving my weaknesses. I've begun implementing what I've learned on the road. In many ways, I feel like a beginning rider again. I'm putting more thought into the mechanics of riding than I have in years. It's intense. I highly recommend the RSS (beginning course), even for experienced riders, if you haven't taken it before. I'm very glad I did. Next Stop: ERC. (Plan to do it yearly.) Post Script: One person (out of 15 of us) failed. I didn't do anywhere near as well in the evaluations as I did in the practice runs, and didn't come anywhere close to getting the highest score in the class for the riding evaluation (those baaaaaaad habits), but I did pass with plenty of room to spare. The two instructors have said they will recommend me for the instructors school if I choose to go. - -- Mike - - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Jun 1998 19:35:51 -0600 From: "tdeaver" Subject: BB: Re: BMW Rally Michael, - -----Original Message----- From: Michael Scott To: Beehive Beemers List ; Tom Deaver Date: Monday, June 08, 1998 11:13 AM Subject: BB: BMW Rally >Tom, > >I am now seriously thinking of doing the BMW Rally, rather than Sturgis >/ Canada later this year.
