I thought that although there were a few discrepencies between the show and the movie, that they are related to each other fairly well. Merrick, Buffy's first watcher was killed in the movie. Also Buffy started off acting more like Cordelia than the Buffy we know now. But as the movie progressed she started acting different, maybe even more grown up than the new Buffy. She did not however burn down the gym, that was the only part that doesnt relate to well. All in all I think Joss did a good job linking them together, better than most movies that are turned onto a series. I come up with two possibilities: 1) In the beginning of WttH, Willow told Xander to check "Theories in Trig" out of the Library. C'est possible he was getting that. 2) In, "The Witch", we find out that all the books on witchcraft have been checked out by Alexander Harris. Maybe he was gettin' 'em (or, at least one) then.
