Good point, you're probably right. Based on the amount of romance on the show though and the turn they've taken, I'm still going to hold to my theory that it's not Buffy in bed with Angel. Now I'm thinking either Cordelia or Jenny (yeah, I know, but there aren't many female characters and I've already ruled out Willow). By "betrayal" I think it could be a friendship betrayal. I mean, how many people that we know would betray her to Spike? Plus, didn't they show a scene of Angel on the ground and what appeared to be him crying or very upset? Of course, if someone betrayed Buffy to SPike and he killed her, I'd imagine he'd be upset as well... (Start: Non-serious speculation) So let me speculate even further and say that Cordelia sleeps with Angel, Xander is even more enraged at Angel, and kills him. That would make for an interesting episode.(End: Non-serious speculation). Oh, this would be great!! I can just see it. We've thought in the past that Principal Snyder knew more than he was letting on, because when the cop asked him what they should say, he said something like, "What do you think? The truth?" and the cop was like "Right. Gangs on PCP." I really think he could be connected to the gang in some way. She did say, however, that if she is in town she WILL appear at the convention! She wont know until a few weeks be4 the convention date, and wanted me to know her situation. So she may not be able to attend, but on the other hand, she may, I have a good feeling about it. She lives in NYC, expressed great enthusiasm, and I do believe that if she is free we will see her there. 2) ANTHONY HEAD: Anthony Head WILL be there! We have booked his appearance with his agent earlier this week. Tony will do a Q&A session, an autograph session, take part in judging the costume contest, and stay, not only for the day portion of the con, but will also be there for the evening presentation of RHPS AND popping into a few of the parties after the con is over! CI and myself will be leading him to those parties with the largest number of people , so people please let me know what rooms you'll be in. **3) GEt your hotel rooms QUICK! Only 59 rooms (fri and sat accomadations) are available as of January 9. The cut off date is March 13, but it looks like they will be gone by then. We advise every1 to book accomadations ASAP.We are also looking into getting extra rooms at the discount rate from Marrott, should we need them, every1 is also welcome to call MArriott to make other arrangements should they be sold out. All I know is I never met any cool geeks like Willow and Xander until I got to college. All the geeks I knew in high school were writing poems about smegma (no, really) and becoming pen pals with prison inmates (yeah, I know). Maybe Catholic girls' school does that kind of thing to you. Which could explain why I never met anyone like Xander. Another thing, all the girls in my school did for fun was get realllllly drunk. Yep, all of 'em, especially the cool ones. Maybe I went to the high school "Heathers" was based off of. Hmmm, mine was in Ohio...I'm beginning to see a connection. However, recently they have begun to air Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the movie, on commerical and cable. I taped it and watched it twice. INTERESTING! Joss Whedon has had the opportunity of writing/creating a character and story first with the movie and then doing it all over again in a tv series. The similarities between the original movie and what has evolved into the BtVS series are there, yet, the series is unique in itself. One can see Joss scavenged all the good elements from his original movie idea and added some new ones that gives us the polished product that we now enjoy as a weekly tv series. I noticed the copyright on the movie was 1992. The BtVS series first aired in 1996 if I remember correctly. So Joss had 4 years between the two in which to pick what to keep and what to change. One can see he stuck with contemporary music to score the series, the idea of a 'Watcher' was there, but not specifically referred to in the movie. I also got the impression that both the Slayer and the Watcher reincarnated over and over again and again as Slayer and Watcher. Sutherland's Watcher says that he had trained Slayers for centuries. Buffy has reoccurring nightmares of being a Slayer in the historic past. This is unlike the tv series which seems to suggest that a new Slayer is chosen when the old one dies and the Watcher is a family tradition passed from father to son...or do I have that wrong? Donald Sutherland who plays the Watcher, even though he is not referred to specifically as one, is not the neat, prim and proper Librarian portrayed by Anthony Head. Sutherland's Watcher is more like a transient in a long overcoat that pops out of dark shadows at odd moments. Yet, like Giles, Sutherland's Watcher trains Buffy, advises her and keeps an eye out for her safety. It was sad to see him die at the hands of the Master played by Rutger Hauer. It makes sense that the Rupert Giles Watcher is school librarian. It just wouldn't work to have him lurking around in bushes at the high school each week to be near Buffy. Buffy in the movie version has a jock for a boyfriend and her circle of friends are other snobby cheerleaders. The tv version incorporates the idea of Willow and Xander as Buffy's friends which is great, otherwise if Joss had stuck with the idea of a clique of cheerleaders we'd have to watch Buffy as she and a whole bunch of Cordelia's spent all their time at the mall talking about what to wear, hair, boys, etc. With Willow and Xander, we get a bit more practical and down to earth friendship. And I think the idea of Angel as a vampire that the tv Buffy is in love with was a great twist/addition! In the movie, Buffy is portrayed as a shallow, selfish cheerleader until she meets the Watcher and realizes that the duty of Slaying is her true destiny. I'm glad Joss decided not to make the tv Buffy a cheerleader, although he did give us that little episode where Buffy does try to make the squad. Another thing Joss borrowed from his original movie was the idea of the final dance of the year (Buffy in the movie is a senior) that Buffy attends and has a big show down with the Master and his vamps. Here are a few other things I noticed: The vamps in the movie did not dematerialize upon being staked like they do in the tv series. I think dematerializing the vampires in the tv series was a good idea because it dispenses with the problem of what to do with all those dead vampires. Rutger Hauer's Master is dressed like an Anne Rice 17th century vampire. The movie vamps do not have game faces but they did have pointed ears and fangs, and they had the ability to fly, or at least, to hover in the air. Another interesting thing, in the movie, Buffy gives up her jock boyfriend for Luke Perry who plays Pike. Pike reminded me of Spike on the tv series. He's kinda like a James Dean outcast character. In the movie, Buffy has both a mom and dad. I don't think they specify where Buffy's highschool is but I get the impression it's somewhere in California. And the high school principal does make a token appearance threatening vampire students with detention. One thing that Joss seems to have maintained is the idea of people in denial. In the movie, a student complete with fangs and pointed ears is shown playing in a high school basketball game in front of the whole school. The vampire player even hovers in the air to make a basket! The only reaction is an objection from the opposing team's coach. No one else except Buffy takes notice of this supernatural occurrence. So, whatever city the movie Buffy was living in, its population must have moved to tv Buffy's Sunnydale. Well, that's my comparative review of the movie and series and the evolution of the original concept to what we all enjoy. Sorry if it bored anyone...nooooooooooooooo....who am I kidding? I loved yapping about it and if I had to do it all over again, I would! funee (: - - ------------------------------ End of buffy-digest V2 #18 ************************** To subscribe to buffy or buffy-digest, send the command subscribe buffy-digest or subscribe buffy to majordomo@xmission.com.
