This contains general comments and questions about spoilers, but doesn't contain any spoilers per se. So why is Joss so concerned about spoilers, to the extent that he is apparently consciously making conflicting statements in an effort to keep people guessing? (But not to the extent that Kevin Williamson went to in order to keep the ending of Scream 2 secret. I read an article over the weekend that stated he had his assistant actually create websites for the purpose of posting fake scripts with incorrect endings so that he could keep the real ending a secret.) I can see a few reasons. 1. He's afraid that fewer people will watch if they already know the answers to the "big" questions for the coming season. But doesn't this presuppose that we watch Buffy in order to learn these answers themselves rather than for the way they will be answered. I can only speak for myself, but even if I knew whether or not there would be another Slayer to replace the killed-off Kendra, or how, when, if Angel returns from Hell, will characters be leaving Buffy to join the cast of Angel and so on, I'd still be watching. I watch for many more reasons than just getting the answers to these big questions. But then again, I'm much more than a casual fan. But what about casual fans? First of all, they probably don't care enough to search out the answers to all these questions. I think we, as major fans, tend to overestimate the reach of the internet among the casual fans. How many people are on this and various mailing lists? A couple thousand maybe. And on the newsgroup, lurkers and posters? Even if there were tens of thousands that would represent a miniscule fraction of the millions of viewers that tune in to Buffy on a semi-regular basis. I can't see how a few websites with advance information would actually significantly alter Buffy's viewership. 2. Joss is concerned that we won't enjoy the show as much if know what is going to happen. And if that's the case, maybe we won't think as highly of his talents or maybe we will gradually lose interest in the show. I read all the spoilers so it's sort of hard to know if I enjoy the show less than if I came into each episode blind. Did I enjoy What's My Line less because I already knew that Kendra was another Slayer? I must admit that the end of Becoming was probably even more powerful because even though I had read all the advance info, nobody had the ending right and so the re-souling and then sending of Angel into Hell came as a shock. But I still enjoyed watching the episode again, even after I knew what would happen. 3. He views it as sort of a game and just likes to see if he can succeed in keeping us in the dark. I bet this is a lot of it. He wants to see how successful he can be in keeping us all guessing. I think of the biggest cliffhanger in TV history, the "Who Shot J.R.?" story from the early 80s. I wonder how this national phenomenon would have played out if there had been an internet. Would it have been hyped even more, if that's possible? Or would the truth have leaked out somehow, and saved a lot of non-regular viewers from tuning in to see who did it? Probably the latter, but I don't think this applies all that much to Buffy. Buffy is not a soap opera (at least, I hope it's not) and so overall plot is not as important as characterization, humor, action sequences and the like. And it's not like we're all hanging on the edge of our seats for the answer to one particular question. There's all kinds of "minor" issues that we need dealt with and I still think seeing just *how* these things are treated are more important than knowing simple one-line answers to the outstanding questions that we have. Jeff Rohaly rohaly@iaw.com - - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Aug 1998 13:15:27 -0400 (EDT) From: tan3@cornell.edu Subject: Re: BUFFY: Why Is Joss Concerned About Spoilers? Again, this contains NO spoilers, but only some suppositions as to why Joss trys to avoid them. This is in response to Jeff's analysis of Joss's attitude toward spoilers. I can't really disagree with what Jeff had to say, but I think I'd like to add one more possibility. Keep in mind, that I avoid spoilers like I aviod that really nasty gunk that you find in puddles in parking lots with little things squirming around in it and a pretty but obviously toxic greeninsh irridescent sheen to it. Therefore, this post may seem to be anti-spoiler, but it's not meant to be offensive, and if you like spoilers, please don't be offended, since these are just the ramblings of an obviously insane person who should be locked up for the protection of the rest of the human race. Joss may avoid spoilers for the same reason that magicians like to keep the secrets to their tricks to themselves. The magician's art consists of distracting your with a swirling kerchief or a waving hand while pulling the rabbit out of the cage that's cleverly hidden behind his left foot. Joss's art sometimes seems to consist of distracting us with a really gross member of the Order of Turaka until he pulls out a second slayer from the cargo bay of an airplane (cleverly hidden on the airfield). The magician's act would lose quite a bit, in some minds, if you knew where to look when he was retrieving the rabbit, and Joss may feel, as I do, that the show would lose a lot if you saw this deadly person climb out of the airplane and said, "Oh! That's the new slayer. She's a good guy, but no one knows it yet." For the extreme example of this effect, watch "The Game", a movie with Michael Douglas. If you've seen it, you know what I mean. If you haven't, watch it WITHOUT reading _any_ spoilers. Then, you'll get the idea. Anyway, cheers! Spoiler have their place- like when I absolutely CANNOT wait for the season to begin (I've been a bad girl- reading all the spoilers this summer). It's like Christmas presents (or birthday if you don't celebrate). In house, we had four kids. My sisters and brother always peeked. If Katy didn't know what she was getting at least two weeks in advance, she nearly died in anticipation of the event. I, on the other hand, would plug my ears since Katy couldn't keep a secret and always wanted to tell me what she thought were my presents. I loved the moment right before opening the present, slowly unwrapping it, peeling off the wrapping and ribbon as slowly as possible. Katy always tended to tell what her presents were before she handed them to the person. I, having savorred the wait myself, never told. I was coy (well, the eleven year old version) and mysterious, always holding out until the very end. That being said, I think that's the way Joss is. He wants to hold it all off, to make the exact moment of presentation so much sweeter with the air of mystery and the almost smothering curiosity. That's what keeps me watching- his ability to capture some of the essence of life, to make things unexpected, to weave a spell that almost makes his characters real and make me want to get to know them better. I read all the spoilers, but like in Becoming 2, when all the spoiler info turns out to be wrong, I just gurgle with delight (all right, I don't GURGLE, per se). I thought it was wonderful that the Scream 2 ending turned out differently from the script(s) circulating on the web. Of course, one could argue that I shouldn't be reading the spoilers if I don't want anything spoiled, but I can't help it. Especially during the rerun season. 'Cause I mean, come on, we're ALL speculating about what's going to happen. Speculating with spoiler knowledge is just INFORMED speculation. Also, the thrill involved in expecting one thing (I thought I knew everything that was going to happen in Becoming) and getting something better (the actual goings-on of Becoming could not have been improved upon at all!!!) is unrivaled. So, once again, I affirm my allegiance to Joss and what a wonderful person he is. Gosh, I feel warm and fuzzy. Matt - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Aug 1998 00:19:42 EDT From: fun-ee@juno.com (fu nee) Subject: BUFFY: Buffy Action Figures While at Wal-Mart, I came across the 6-inch line of new action figures for the Xena Warrior Princess tv series. I'm sure you all know of Xena, her sidekick Gabrielle, and their greatest female nemesis, Callisto. Anyways, there they all were -- two new models of Xena one where she has her own base from which she performs a jumping action, another model where she pulls her sword from her scabbard on her back. The Gabrielle figure had a staff which she could twirl and an assortment of other weapons which she abhors on the tv show (being a non-killing pacifist) but which the toymakers felt necessary to include for sales appeal evidently. The Callisto figure had her set of weapons also, none of which she uses on the show. I must say all the figures were very good in detail as far as costume, they all had their main weapons besides the other sales gimmick weapons, and they all were a step up from the previous 5-inch figures that came out originally which featured only Xena. (Yeah, it took 3 years till they finally made action figures of Gabrielle and another minor character from the series!). Everything looked pretty good EXCEPT for the facial features of all the figures. All of the women's faces looked straaaaange. Kinda like they were grimacing, mean, hard bitches. I couldn't bring myself to buy any of them and I'm a fan of the series. I'm wondering if the action figure artists who designed these figures were male or female. I'll put it to you guys: If you were an artist designing these dolls, would you pay so much attention to the other details of costume, proportion, design, etc. and neglect the resemblance and beauty of the faces on these figures all of which are representing three of the most beautiful females (Lucy Lawless, Renee O'Connor and Hudson Leick) on tv today? If you answer this, identify yourself as male or female. Anyway, after this rather depressing experience, I recalled someone mentioning that another toy manufacturer different from the one (Toy Biz Inc.) that designed the Xena line would be desiging the Buffy the Vampire Slayer line of figures and that this company was noted for doing fantastic jobs in everything especially in catching the facial resemblance of the characters. I looked at all the action figures and couldn't find a Buffy figure, so I must assume it hasn't been produced yet. However to insure a success, we must find out who the manufacturers are and write them a letter stressing the fact that accuracy is important. In fact, if you guys get me the e-mail address or U.S.P.S address of these manufacturers, I will tell them my experience with the Xena action figures and definitely get across the point that fans don't want to be disappointed as I was. I'm looking forward to the new line of Buffy action figures which I hope will premiere before the year is out. I want it to be a success, I know all of you do too and that many of you will proudly hold your Buffy figure as you watch the show, prop it up on your computer monitor to watch you as you type your posts, and you certainly want all the figure to be as accurate a reproduction of each character in the series. funee _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
