Dixie High School quarterback Lance Pendelton (3-A MVP) and receiver Cody Fonnesbeck have verbally committed to BYU.

Fonnesbeck is a small 5-7, 134 lbs, but produces burning speeds.  "At a Reebok combine in Long Beach, Calif. Fonnesbeck ran a 4.21 in the 40, fastest among 600 athletes at the combine."  He will likely run track at BYU also.

Pendelton chose BYU over Utah because of the future schedule that includes Notre Dame, Syracuse, USC and UCLA.  He will leave on a church mission in July and will rejoin the Cougars in 2001.  "Pendleton ranks as one of the most prolific passers in state history. He threw for a state-record 3,312 yards and 27 touchdowns in 1998."  "It has always been my dream to play quarterback at BYU," he said. "I thought to myself, `Why not go out and try to fulfill your dream?' "

ESPN and Mountain West Conference officials reached a seven-year agreement Monday, giving ESPN exclusive national television rights to football and men's basketball games next year.  The deal is for a reported $48 million.  As part of the deal, the MWC will have at least three Thursday night appearances in football and three Big Monday games in basketball.  In addition, the package will will include between 19 and 23 football games each year -- with at least two on ABC, four on ESPN, five on ESPN2 and an average of eight syndicated by ESPN Regional Television.  The basketball deal calls for a minimum of 12 games each season, including seven league games, two non-conference games and three Mountain West Conference tournament games.

"From immediate name recognition to all aspects of recruiting, this relationship will be vital in the development of the Mountain West Conference," said MWC commissioner Craig Thompson.

BYU expects bumper crop of talented recruits

National letter-of-intent signing day on Wednesday and the coaches at BYU are still tentative.  Nothing is certain until the football recruits sign the paper and send it in.

Nonetheless, the coaches are optimistic about this year's group.  "The glamor boy of the Cougs' 1999 recruiting class is, naturally, a quarterback: Matt Berry, a 6-foot-5 gunner from Redmond, Wash., has been rated by various services as one of the top five QBs in the West and even among the best nation-wide."  "I really liked the atmosphere and everything else about BYU," Berry said. "It was an easy choice."

Utes hold Lobos to 39 points
See: http://espn.go.com/ncb/1999/990201/recap/uaenam.html

Utah (No. 24 ESPN/USA Today, No. 20 AP) celebrated its return Monday to the Top 25 with a 57-39 win over New Mexico (No. 18 ESPN/USA Today, No. 17 AP), handing the Lobos their first loss this season in The Pit.

The 39 points were the fewest by New Mexico on its homecourt since a 61-37 loss to San Diego State on Feb. 3, 1984.  New Mexico had won 16 straight at home this season and were 68-2 in The Pit dating back to 1996. But after a brief 2-2 tie, the Utes left no doubt who was the better team.

Every Wednesday, BYU assistant coach Nate Call answers your questions in a new feature called Call's Court! Coach Nathan CallEmail your questions to "callscourt@byuinsider.com" anytime during the week.  Questions must be received by Monday to be answered on that following Wednesday.  Each week, one person will be chosen to win a BYU basketball T-shirt!  Start emailing your questions today!

From Preston (Blackfoot, ID):

Now that Coop is hurt, what will the starting line-up be against Utah? Will TC start at the shooting guard and Bigelow move down to the forward spot?  Also, when is Cooper expected to return?

Response

Nate Cooper was injured in the first half of the New Mexico game, breaking his finger.  He went to the hospital for x-rays and he didn't finish the game.  He is a very tough competitor and he wants to play this Saturday.  In fact he practiced with the team on Tuesday and I feel he will play against Utah.  The doctor said he is cleared to play if he can take the pain.  The coaching staff would have a hard time keeping Nate out of this game.  We haven't made a decision how much he will play or if he will start the game.  Todd Christensen, Danny Bower, and Brian Dignan will all play more minutes if Nate cannot play.  Mark Bigelow will play more minutes at the small forward rather than the shooting guard.

From Charlie (American Fork, UT):

In the Fresno State game, there seemed to be two different pivotal defensive changes in the game.  The first seemed to be made by BYU when Fresno was stopped from scoring at will late in the first half, and the other by Fresno in the final minutes when we couldn't seem to get the ball into Rivers.  Can you elaborate on the defensive adjustments in layman's terms?

Response

Fresno State is a very quick and an explosive offensive team.  One of their offensive strategies is to attack the basket with dribble penetration.  Early in the game we wanted to keep the ball out of the middle of the court to keep our post players out of foul trouble.  We forced them to shoot jump shots and this kept us from fouling them.  The only problem was they were making the shots, so we had to make a defensive adjustment to extend our defense.  We did have some defensive mistakes in the game but it was a solid defense effort against a high powered offense.

Silester Rivers had a great game against Fresno State.  He had a lot of energy and he seamed to score every time he touched the ball.  We knew Silester had the hot hand and we tried to get the ball to him every time on offense.  Fresno State made some adjustments to take the ball out of Silester's hands.  They dropped down another defender in front of him to discourage the pass to him in the low post and when he did received the ball in the low post, they double teamed.  They forced him to pass the ball to another player.  We missed some short open shots that we have made all year.  Sometimes you can do everything perfect on offense and the shot doesn't go in, and sometimes you do everything wrong on offense and the shot does go in.  Unfortunately, for us the shots were not going in against Fresno State.

Thanks, Coach Call!  We'll see you next week.

This week's T-shirt winner: Preston from Blackfoot, ID

Cougars said to have top class in state and league
The Deseret News (2/4/99)

Student Sports magazine, a national recruiting source, says BYU had the best recruiting class in the WAC.  "Utah did very well but I give BYU a slight edge," said managing editor Brentt Eads, who rates both programs in the top 40 nationally.  "The schools that are going to make up the Mountain West Conference are getting players that the Pac-10 really wanted. The new conference has really helped," said Eads. "This is Utah's best class they've had in five years; and BYU's is outstanding."

The Salt Lake Tribune (2/4/99)
http://www.sltrib.com/1999/feb/02041999/sports/80216.htm

The article details Cody Fonnesbeck's recruiting experience.  Fonnesbeck completed the high school season with impressive numbers but was overlooked because of his small size.  He decided to make a highlight tape of himself and sent it to various universities.  Out of the blue, South Carolina coach Lou Holtz called and scheduled a campus visit.  The campus visit included a locker and football jersey with his name on it.

In the end, he chose to be a Cougar.  "It was all quite a ride, an unforgettable experience," said Fonnesbeck.

BYU signed a whole new crop of recruits on Wednesday, including three sons of coaches and administrators.  "Cameron Chow, Lance Reynolds Jr. and Chris Hale were among the 26 players who on Wednesday signed letters-of-intent to play for the Cougars.  Chow's father is offensive coordinator Norm Chow, Reynolds' dad is the running backs coach, and Hale's father is Associate Athletic Director Val Hale."

Signing coaches sons is not new.  LaVell Edward's himself had a son on the team, as did Tom Ramage and former linebackers coach Fred Whittingham.

With a score of 15-4, 15-0, 15-6, the match is the Cougars’ most decisive victory of the season and improves their record to a perfect 8-0 overall, 6-0 in MPSF play.

Cougar All-Americans Ossie Antonetti and Ryan Millar led the team with nine and eight kills respectively. Millar led BYU’s defensive effort with a team-high seven digs and seven blocks. Outside hitters Ingo Lindemann and Rich Lambourne put down five kills apiece to contribute to BYU’s offensive attack.

The win is the Cougars’ second in a four-game California road trip. BYU will play Cal State Northridge Friday and Loyola Marymount Saturday.

Game Overview

BYU returns home to the Marriott Center to begin the second half of conference play after a tough road trip to UTEP and New Mexico.  The Cougars are 6-3 at home, having only dropped nail biters to Arizona, Cal, and Fresno State.  Both BYU and Utah are undefeated at home and winless on the road vs. in-state rivals this year.  Starter Nathan Cooper suffered a broken finger at the outset of the game in Albuquerque, and it remains to be seen how much or if he will play.

Utah made a statement on their road swing through the Southwest this past week, holding New Mexico to only 39 points in The Pit, the Lobos' lowest home tally in over a decade.  The 18 point win catapulted the Utes to a #20 national ranking and was only the third home loss for UNM in 71 games (BYU handed them one last season).  All-American point guard Andre Miller, supported by big man Hanno Mottola and forward Alex Jensen, presents a challenge for anybody trying to defend him.

Implications

A win for BYU would be absolutely huge.  At 8-11, the Cougars have to win five of their last seven games to finish with a .500 record, and knocking off the division leading team would be a great way to start the second half of WAC play.  But most importantly, this is Utah we're talking about.  Barring a possible matchup in tournament play, this will be the last time these two teams meet this season, and state bragging rights for the rest of the MILLENNIUM hinge on this contest.

Keys to the Game

BYU needs to keep Andre Miller in check to stay in this game.  He had his way with the Cougar backcourt a month ago, and the defensive breakdown that began with him dominoed, letting the Utes run wild.  Solid defensive stops will be crucial; over the last three games, the Cougars' opponents have put up red-hot shooting percentages, something that can't happen on Saturday if the Cougs are to come out with a win.  A packed house on national TV should help the Y -- the Marriott Center is a huge asset to the team when the crowd gets into the game.

This article talks about the rebuilding effort in the BYU baseball program.  "We're enthused to be starting the spring portion of our schedule," said Pullins. "We made great progress in the fall and look for improvement, now that we are taking the field."

There are 10 players returning from last year's team, including All-American Ryan Pond.

After this weekend's games at Southern Colorado, BYU will participate in a tournament in St. George.  These are the first of 26 games in a row on the road before returning to Provo on March 19 against San Jose State.

Non-LDS football players attracted by high profile program
BYU Newsnet

Although much has been said about the difficulties that non-LDS players have adjusting to BYU's culture, many players feel great here.  "Margin Hooks, a wide receiver and junior majoring in Communications from Waco, Texas said BYU was an ideal school for him because of the frequent national television coverage."  "BYU is known for its passing record and this was perfect for me", he said, "because I am a wide receiver."

Current BYU cornerback coach Brian Mitchell, who went on to play in the NFL after his days as a Cougar, says he came to BYU because it was a safe environment and he was a Christian.  Mitchell and Hooks make it a point to help the new non-LDS players fit in.

Game Recap

Andre Miller and Jeremy Killion scored 19 points apiece as 24th-ranked Utah ran its winning streak to 13 games with a 71-46 Western Athletic Conference rout of Brigham Young.  Miller scored 13 of his 19 points in the first half as the Utes (18-4, 8-0 WAC Pacific) opened a 31-20 lead after 20 minutes. Utah had its lead cut to six before going on a 24-6 tear to open a 54-33 lead with 8:25 to play on an eight-footer by Killion.

Utah, the only undefeated team in the 16-team conference, is enjoying its longest winning streak since starting last season 18-0. The Utes have won the last eight games between the intrastate rivals and are 111-113 all-time against BYU.

Mark Bigelow had 11 points but was ejected midway through the second half after picking up a technical foul, which also was his fifth personal foul. The Cougars (8-12, 3-5 WAC Pacific) have lost four straight games, including consecutive losses to ranked opponents.

Silester Rivers had four of the Cougars' first seven points of the second half as they closed within 33-27 on a driving layup by Bigelow with 15:51 to go. But Utah found creases in BYU's 1-2-2 zone defense and attacked from the perimeter.

Phil Cullen hit a 3-pointer from the left corner and Alex Jensen hit one from the right corner. Bigelow answered with one of his own from beyond the arc to make it 39-30, but Cullen found Miller in the lane, where he hit a five-footer, and Tony Harvey nailed a 3-pointer to give the Utes a 44-30 lead with 11:58 left.

Miller blocked a shot and was rewarded by a length of the court pass from Cullen that led to a layup and three-point play to bump the lead to 17. Todd Christensen countered with a three-point play, but Tyson Johnston had a dunk, Mottola sank a free throw after Bigelow's technical foul, Jensen had a follow shot and Killion capped the run with an eight-footer, staking Utah to a 54-33 lead.

Utah took its largest lead at 71-42 in the final minute when Killion hit a reverse lay-in.

Jensen finished with 10 points as the Utes shot 41 percent (26-of-63) from the field and amassed a 41-28 rebounding advantage. Killion was 7-of-13 from the field, 5-of-9 from 3-point range.

Rivers contributed 10 points for the Cougars, who shot only 35 percent (13-of-37) and committed 18 turnovers. BYU, which entered the game hitting 36.6 percent from beyond the arc, made only 2-of-11 from 3-point range.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: BYU Insider Subject: [Insider] Call's Court Date: 10 Feb 1999 14:12:35 -0700   Call's Court

Every Wednesday, BYU assistant coach Nate Call answers your questions. Coach Nathan CallEmail your questions to "callscourt@byuinsider.com" anytime during the week.  Questions must be received by Monday to be answered on that following Wednesday.  Each week, one person will be chosen to win a BYU basketball T-shirt!

From Brent (Provo, UT):

I know you can not comment on individual recruits but how many scholarships are you looking to fill in the next signing period and is their a specific need you are targeting?  Also when is the date that recruits can sign?

Response

We have three seniors who will be graduating this year: Danny Bower, Brian Hamilton, and Brian Dignan.  Also Mark Bigelow will serve a LDS mission after the season, so we have four scholarships to fill for next year.  The next signing period begins April 7th.  We are looking for the best players we can get into the program who will help us in our rebuilding efforts.  We feel we have made a significant increase in the talent level the past two years and we want to continue to attract the top student/athletes.   We desire players who are not only talented athletes and quality students, but who possess a passion for the game of basketball.

We feel we have a solid core of young players who just need more experience.  We have two freshmen and four sophomores who play a significant amount of minutes in the games.  We have a large group of missionaries who are returning this summer, but we have not ruled out the idea of signing a player or two in April, depending on our needs.  Most of our efforts have been focused on juniors, sophomores, and freshmen in high school.  We already have a commitment from one of the top 50 juniors in the country.  There is also the possibility of signing a high school player who would go directly on a LDS mission.  The NCAA only allows us 13 scholarships.  We wish we had more scholarship but there are not that many to go around.

From Peter (Provo, UT):

As I understand it, your goals at the start of the season were to have at least a .500 season and to make it to the WAC tournament. In light of recent losses, what will the cougars need to do to reach these goals?

Response

We need to win our next two home games against Hawaii and San Diego to lock up a spot in the WAC tournament.  This would not guarantee it, but we would lead both of them by three games with five games left on the schedule.  Also, we would have the tie-breaker in our favor.

To finish the season at a.500 winning percentage, we need to win all four of our home games (San Diego State, Hawaii, New Mexico, and UTEP), then win on the road at either San Jose State or Fresno State.  We would finish out the season at 13-13, heading to the WAC tournament in Las Vegas.  If we finish out the remainder of our games at 5-1, our final WAC record would be 8-6 and we would be a four or fifth seed in the tournament.

Thanks, Coach Call!  We'll see you next week.

This week's T-shirt winner: Brent from Provo, UT

Game Recap

Mekeli Wesley scored nine of his 13 points in the first seven minutes of the game as Brigham Young defeated Hawaii 81-68 Thursday night.

Wesley sparked BYU (9-12, 4-5 Western Athletic Conference) to a 17-5 run to open the game. Hawaii (5-17, 2-8) shot just 2-for-9 during BYU's streak and also had two turnovers.

BYU led 41-21 at halftime.

Behind Mike Robinson's 17 second-half points, Hawaii closed within 58-48 before BYU pulled away. Robinson, who finished with 20 points, had nine in a 20-8 run to bring Hawaii within 51-41 with 12:56 left.

Brian Dignan had four free throws in seven seconds to blunt that Rainbows' spurt. He hit two after Casey Cartwright picked up a technical foul for yelling at referee Ed Ristau while protesting a call. Dignan added two more when he was fouled shortly after BYU took the ball out of bounds on the ensuing play.

Silester Rivers led BYU with 18 points, while Todd Christensen added 13.

Insider Views

Great win tonight for the Cougs because it creates a cushion between us and Hawaii for 6th place in the Pacific division and the final seed in the WAC tournament.  That said, the Cougs are actually tied for 5th place with San Jose State, who we face next week.  With us against WAC-winless San Diego State on Saturday and San Jose heading to the "Pit" in New Mexico, we should have sole possession of 5th place by week's end.

It's very possible a two-year deal can be struck."

Mekeli Wesley scored eight of his 15 points in the final 6:40 of the game to lift Brigham Young to a 93-76 win over San Diego State Saturday.

BYU (10-12, 5-5 Western Athletic Conference) led 66-62 with 6:59 left after the Aztecs' Dante Wilson hit a 3-pointer. But the Cougars pulled away with a 20-8 run.

Wilson's basket had capped a 10-2 run for San Diego State (2-21, 0-11 WAC), during which he and Matt Watts had five points.

BYU took control early, taking a 29-9 lead with Todd Christensen and Michael Vranes each getting six points in that streak.

But David Abramowitz scored 14 of his 20 points in the first half, and the Aztecs came within 40-33 before the Cougars took a 43-33 lead into the locker room at the break.

Christensen led six BYU double-figure scorers with 17 points. Mark Bigelow had 16, Silester Rivers 14, Cooper 11 and Vranes 10.

Watts had 18 points for San Diego State, Epps 12 and Vince Okotie 11.

Insider Notes

The Cougs are now in 5th place in the Pacific Division standings and with the win tonight are almost assured of making the WAC tournament in Las Vegas.  BYU could move up another notch by beating Fresno State (the 4th place team) this coming Thursday.  About tonight:  if Silester could stay out of foul trouble, he'd dominate games.  Tonight he was 6-8 shooting in only 14 minutes!

BYU's Tait Works Out Intent on Impressing NFL
http://www.sltrib.com/02141999/sports/83035.htm

Playing for his hometown Arizona Cardinals would be a dream come true.  But John Tait has more pressing concerns these days, like making sure he is the kind of player that the Cardinals -- or the Lions, or the Steelers, or the Buccaneers -- would like to have.   A month after his decision to skip his senior season at BYU and enter the NFL Draft, Tait is home in Arizona, working out all day, almost every day, in preparation for the draft combine next weekend in Indianapolis.

Life might change, but people like Danny Bower still succeed
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/E7E83E21C42279A987256719005CA88E

It has been an interesting season for BYU guard Danny Bower.  After averaging 11.3 points per game last year in a very important role for the Cougars, he now waits for any chance to step into the lineup.  He's a specialist now, when the coach needs a three point shooter, Danny enters.

"I've spent a lot of time watching and cheering," Bower said. "It's been an adjustment for me, but you know, what's happened will help me later in life.  "I want to play, sure. The way things have worked out, though, has taught me things that go beyond basketball."

BYU turns focus to breaking the press
http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/dhtoday.nsf/Sports/83A9CE083368842887256719005CA87F

After assuring themselves of a WAC tournament berth this season, BYU turns its focus to improving its game.  With a few improvements, along with wins, BYU could improve its seed in the tournament and try to make a run.  One of those improvements is breaking the full court press.

"I'm sure we're going to see a press for 40 minutes at Fresno," Cleveland said. "Our problem was mainly one of timing. We had the wrong people at the wrong place and the wrong guys putting the ball into play.  "We'll work one or two hours this week on how to handle the press. It'll help to have Dignan healthy. He's kind of our glue in those situations."
