Game Recap

Owen Pochman kicked a 33-yard field goal in overtime and Kevin Feterik threw for four touchdowns as Brigham Young beat Utah State 34-31 on Friday night.

When the kick sailed through the uprights, the Cougars (3-1) celebrated on their sideline while 31,220 fans, the third-largest crowd in the 32-year history of Romney Stadium, went away disappointed.

The Cougars (3-1) blew a 31-20 lead in the fourth quarter and caught a huge break when Brad Bohn, who kicked a career-best 55-yard field goal as the first half expired, missed from 42 yards on Utah State's overtime possession.

Bohn had connected on a 37-yard attempt seconds earlier, but the Aggies (1-3) were penalized for illegal procedure and moved back five yards. Bohn's 42-yard try was wide left and BYU took over.

Utah State had rallied in the final six minutes of regulation. Bohn made a 47-yard field goal with 5:42 to play to pull the Aggies within 31-23.

The Cougars seemed poised to put the game away by driving to Utah State's 26 but Pochman missed a 43-yard field goal attempt with 1:07 to play.

The Aggies knew what they needed to do and quarterback Doug Crosbie helped them do it. He directed a 74-yard drive in 38 seconds, throwing a 4-yard TD pass to Demario Brown with 21 seconds remaining to make it 31-29.

On fourth-and-10 from the Aggies 41, Crosbie found Aaron Jones on a crossing route for a 44-yard gain to the BYU 15 with 29 seconds to play. Two plays later, he found Brown in the right corner of the end zone for the TD.

On the ensuing 2-point conversion, Crosbie threw a timing route in the same spot to Jones, who outleaped BYU's Heishu Robertson to force overtime.

The Aggies came hard at Feterik and delivered lots of hard hits, usually on his release. Feterik even left briefly during the third quarter after two Aggies converged on his knees, leaving him sprawled on the turf for three minutes.

After going to the locker room, Feterik returned on BYU's next possession to lead a six-play, 65-yard drive, capped by his second TD pass to Jolley.

Y Is Pass-Happy with QB Feterik
See:  http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/1,1249,115013283,00.html?

Having completed a third of the football season, Kevin Feterik is showing that he belongs on the list of BYU quarterback greats.  Statistically he's off to one of the best starts in Cougar QB history, and his play is making people take notice.

Although he wasn't considered anywhere near being a Heisman candidate before the season started, he's been featured on several "watch lists" for the award.  BYU will do their best to promote him, even though a publicity campaign now is probably too late.  "We had no idea Kevin would set the place on fire like he has," said BYU associate athletic director Duff Tittle. "He caught us off guard."

Feterik is a contender for several other awards given annually to top passers, such as the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, the Davey O'Brien Award and the Sammy Baugh Award.

With several key players missing the Utah State game, others stepped up to fill in and did so quite nicely.  Playing the middle lineback spot for the injured Rob Morris, Jeff Holtry helped to hold star Aggie running back Demario Brown under 100 yards and also picked off his second pass of the year.  Tevita Ofahengaue and Doug Jolley combined to catch three touchdowns as Carlos Nuno was sidelined with a knee injury.  Fahu Tahi stepped up with the Cougars' first 100 yard game as fellow freshman runner Luke Staley rested on the sidelines.

"It hurts not having your best people in there, but we've finally started putting it together," head coach LaVell Edwards said.

Hits Just Kept Coming for Feterik
See:   http://www.sltrib.com/1999/oct/10031999/sports/34074.htm

Following Virginia's lead, Utah State dropped back as many as eight defenders into zone pass coverage to combat BYU's quick passing game.  The heavy coverage in the secondary gave quarterback Kevin Feterik few places to unload the ball, and as he's waited for receivers to open up, oncoming rushers have been able to unload some major hits on him.

Last Friday's game saw Feterik absorb three sacks and two roughing-the-quarterback penalties.  Those hits didn't hurt nearly as much as the combined effect of being relentlessly pounded play after play as he let go of the ball.  The scariest moment for Feterik and onlookers came when USU's defensive ends sandwiched him in the third quarter, knocking him out of the game for a few minutes.

The Cougar offensive line hopes to give Feterik more protection in this week's game against the Golden Bears of California.

Cougar Offense Scoring Its Way into Elite Company
See:  http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/Dhtoday.nsf/Sports/513A88DB3E1D1B3B872567FF0027486C

This year's football team features an entertaining offense that knows how to put points on the board.  So far the Cougars have averaged 36 points per game and have bested 34 in each game.  The last time the Cougars scored 34 four games in a row was in 1996, when the team was able to do it in eight straight games.

Since then, two football seasons went by without consecutive 34 point efforts, but now the scoreboard operator at Cougar Stadium is being put to work again.  With so many offensive stars, the Y hopes to continue the scoring.

Women's VBall Team Whips New Mexico
See:  http://www.byucougars.com/volleyball_w/results/19991002_wvlb_res.html

Playing what coach Elaine Michaelis called her team’s best effort of the year, BYU’s 11th-ranked women’s volleyball team defeated New Mexico, 15-8, 15-1, 15-8, Saturday to improve to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in Mountain West Conference play.

"We played really well tonight – it is the best played match we have had this year," Michaelis said. "The passing was good, Al (Anna-Lena Smith) did a nice job distributing the ball and our hitters were making good choices. Our five blocks per game was an outstanding effort."

The Cougars’ next match will be at in-state foe Weber State Tuesday before returning to Mountain West Conference play Friday and Saturday at home against UNLV and San Diego State.

Edwards' Heart Jumped When His "Franchise" QB Went Down
See:  http://www.sltrib.com/1999/oct/10021999/sports/33752.htm

LaVell Edwards admitted to being scared when Kevin Feterik was carried off the field last weekend after taking a vicious hit from two Utah State defenders.  "He's our franchise," said Edwards.  Much to the coach's relief, Feterik came running back out from the locker room after only a couple of minutes.  "I've been taking hits like this for three years," said Feterik. "They just put a knee brace on it and I hustled back out."

He immediately led the Y downfield twice, throwing touchdown strikes to tight ends Tevita Ofahengaue and Doug Jolley, putting the Cougs in the lead 31-20.  The star quarterback finished the game with a pass efficiency of 162.4 before strapping ice packs on his elbow and knee.

Cougar Women Finish 3rd at Stanford Cross Country Invite
See:  http://www.byucougars.com/cross_country/results/19991002_cc_res.html

Running against six of the top ten teams in the nation, the BYU women earned a solid third-place finish to assert themselves as one of the best teams in America.  Stanford, the nation's top-ranked team, won the team competition with 36 points, followed by No. 2 Arkansas' 51 points. The No. 4 Cougars were next with a total of 82 points.

"Even though we lost today, we are right where we want to be at this point in the season," said Coach Patrick Shane. "We're focusing on the last four meets of the season and we're treating everything else as preparation for those meets. We ran tough but we're not sharp yet, not where we're gonna be. Stanford and Arkansas were just better teams today."

Coaches working to fix BYU's poor special teams play
See:  http://www.daily-herald.com/dh/Dhtoday.nsf/Sports/D691D35E5940EE6E8725680200274EAC

Most years the special teams play of the Cougars is very solid, but this year they have more than their share of problems -- and the coaches know it.  "This is the worst it's ever been," Coach Tom Ramage said. "It's never been this bad."

The Cougars are ranked dead last in the NCAA in punt returns, and the kicking game has repeatedly missed kicks or had them blocked.

Another Top Kick Returner Awaits BYU
See:  http://www.sltrib.com/1999/oct/10061999/sports/34880.htm

After helping Utah State's Emmett White soar in the national rankings, BYU's football team will face a kick return man who is even better, at least statistically, this Saturday against Cal.  Deltha O'Neal is a senior for the Golden Bears who has opened two of Cal's four games with kickoff returns of at least 50 yards.  His punt return average is nearly double Whites at 29 yards a pop.

This comes as a big concern to the Cougs, who are giving up a whopping 17.4 yards on punt returns and 38.8 on kickoffs.  According to special-teams coach Tom Ramage, BYU will do a better job of kicking to the proper places on the field and covering kicks as well.  "It won't be like last week," said Ramage. "I guarantee you that."

Eldredge Named Assistant Baseball Coach
See:  http://www.byucougars.com/baseball/releases/19991004_bsb_rel.html

David “Boy” Eldredge has been appointed full-time assistant baseball coach at BYU.  Eldredge, 38, was approved last month to assist new head coach Vance Law in leading BYU’s baseball fortunes. Eldredge replaces long-time assistant Bobby Noel who has moved to a teaching position in BYU’s College of Health and Human Performance.

"Dave Eldredge enjoys a tremendous amount of respect from people in the baseball community,” said BYU Athletic Director Val Hale. “He was a successful head coach in Hawaii, and he had valuable Division I coaching experience at Loyola Marymount. He is going to be a strong addition to BYU's baseball program."

Tim McTyer Out for Season with Arm Injury
See:  http://www.cnnsi.com/football/nfl/news/1999/10/01/mctyer_browns_ap/

Former BYU cornerback Tim McTyer, now a safety with the Cleveland Browns, will miss the rest of the football season with a broken forearm.  After starting the first two games of the season for the Browns, he suffered the break while playing against the Tennessee Titans.

Originally, the plan was to hold him out of the lineup for six to eight weeks, but after thinking it over, the team has decided to hold him out for the rest of this season and give him time to rest and heal.  "We felt that if he was going to be out for that long, it left only four weeks of the season for him to play," Browns director of football operations Dwight Clark said. "We thought it was best to put Tim on IR instead of trying to rush him back and risk further injury."

Softball Team to Host Picnic in the Park
See:  http://www.byucougars.com/all/releases/19991005_ath_rel.html

The new BYU Division I softball team will host a “Fast Pitch Picnic in the Park” on Friday, Oct. 8 at the south field by BYU’s football stadium.

The “Fast Pitch Picnic in the Park” is an opportunity for the public to become familiar with the BYU women’s softball team in its inaugural season as a Division I team. This free event will include base running contests, speed throw, home run derby and a celebrity softball game. Dinner will be provided by Wallaby’s Restaurant at a cost of $5 per person, with proceeds going to benefit the BYU softball team.

Local media representatives will be on hand for the celebrity fast-pitch softball game against the BYU team. Daily Herald sports editor Tad Walch will be accompanied by reporters Scott Bell and Scott Tittrinton. Also participating will be Jeff Call of the Deseret News, Gordon Monson from the Salt Lake Tribune, Tom Kirkland of KSL-TV, Channel 4’s Wes Ruff, and BYU athletic director Val Hale.

ABC to Provide Regional Coverage of FB Game Against Cal
See:  http://www.byucougars.com/football/releases/19991004_ftb_rel.html

Saturday’s football game against California will be broadcast live on Salt Lake City's ABC affiliate KTVX, ch. 4, beginning at 5 p.m. (MDT). In addition, the game will be broadcast regionally on the West Coast, including Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada and Arizona. The ABC affiliate in Idaho Falls, Ida., will also carry Saturday's game. Veteran sportscaster Charlie Jones will call the action, with Nick Lowery serving as the color analyst.

BYU will play its fifth consecutive game in the state of Utah this Saturday, and its fourth home game of the season.  The offense continues to click as Kevin Feterik has put up some of the best four-game numbers of any quarterback in BYU history, rivaled only by Ty Detmer's Heisman year and Steve Young's senior year.  Last week saw the Cougars' "other" freshman running back Fahu Tahi rack up 116 yards on 22 carries, giving him the first 100 yard effort by a Cougar running back since last November.  The Y has been consistent in scoring so far this year, posting points in 15 of 17 periods played so far.  BYU broke an unhappy trend last week -- before the overtime victory in Logan, the Cougars had lost 12 consecutive games in which they trailed at halftime.

The Cougar defense has suffered somewhat of an identity crisis this season.  After not allowing Washington or CSU to cross midfield until well into third quarter play, the D has looked helpless at times against Virginia and Utah State.  Part of the drop in performance can certainly be linked to the absence of Rob Morris at middle linebacker.  He returned to practice on Tuedsday after nearly three weeks of not playing, and is listed as a game-time decision again this week.

California will be trying to rebound from last week's nightmare in Pullman when the Golden Bears suffered a 31-7 loss, helping Washington State break its 12 game losing streak.  Like Arizona State the week before, WSU put on a ferocious pass rush and kept frosh sensation Kyle Boller running for his life.  Although Cal has never played in Provo before, head coach Tom Holmoe is no stranger to Provo, having started as a cornerback for the Cougars from 1980 to 82 and having served as an assistant to LaVell Edwards.  Cal is a young team; 10 of the 19 freshmen on the roster saw action last week.  Their one hope against BYU may be to exploit the secondary with their passing game, although a couple of their best receivers are injured.

Cal defensive tackle Jacob Waasdorp scoring Cal's only touchdown on a 25-yard fumble return.

The Golden Bears have won both of their home games this year, but have dropped both road games, including the WSU game and a 45-0 spanking at Nebraska.  In both games, the offense failed to capitalize on good scoring opportunities early on, and early defensive prowess soon crumbled.  Two special teams errors last week, a blocked punt and a fumbled kickoff both led to touchdowns for Washington State.  The early domination has run out this season, as the Golden Bears have been outscored 38-0 in second quarters this year.  To the credit of Cal's defense, last week's shellacking came with three of their top defensive backs out, and all three are expected to play this week.

Implications

BYU wants to post another win against a PAC-10 team, and should have a pretty good shot this week.  A solid win should move the Cougars up to the #20 range in the polls.

California came into the season with a highly touted defense, but finds itself licking its wounds at this point in the season.  Being able to hold BYU in check would look great on the Golden Bears' resume.

Players to Watch

BYU

#1, Michael Westbrook (WR) -- After catching only one pass as a freshman, he's shown that he's sure-handed this year and has become a mainstay of the Cougar receiving corps.

#7, Kevin Feterik (QB) -- The coaching staff is concerned about his risk taking, and a big goal for this game is to offer him better protection so he doesn't get hit as much as he has been lately.  His inspirational comeback after being knocked out of the USU game with an MCL sprain was key to the overtime win.

#11, Brandon Doman (offense) -- The quarterback-turned-receiver is factoring into the offense in more and more ways.  His athletic ability allows him to contribute from the slot or anywhere else he's needed.

#34, Kalani Sitake (RB) -- He has provided solid play throughout the season and his shoulder is feeling better now.  He served his mission in Oakland and was assigned to Cal's campus for over six months.

#93, Byron Frisch (DE) -- He's been the defensive team leader during Rob Morris' absence.  He should have a big game as he goes up an offensive line that's been somewhat porous as of late.

Cal

#7, Kyle Boller (QB) -- The freshman phenom won his first start against ASU, but was held largely ineffective last week.  He has as much potential as almost any freshman in the nation, but is inexperienced.

#8, Deltha O'Neal (KR) -- Cal's version of James Dye, O'Neal has managed either a punt return, reception or run of at least 20 yards in 14 of his last 16 games.

#13, Sekou Sanyika (LB) -- This 6'4" 240 pound outside linebacker is coming off a great outing against WSU in which he notched nine tackles, three for losses.  He just became the second-ranked career leader at Cal for tackles for loss with 51 and should eclipse the team record of 54 before the season's end.

#29, Joe Igber (RB) -- This 5'8" 190 pound true freshman holds the records for high school rushing yardage and touchdowns in the state of Hawai'i.  He leads the Cal rushing attack with an average of 5.8 yards per carry and will make his first start tomorrow.

#94, Jacob Waasdorp (DT) -- He was possibly the least heralded of a very talented D-line before the season started, but he has been the most solid performer throughout the season.  Cal's lone score last week came after he had a huge tackle for a loss, and then on the next play knocked the ball out of WSU's quarterback's hands and picked it up to go 25 yards for a touchdown.

Records to Watch

BYU holds the current NCAA record of 304 consecutive games without being shut out.

Kevin Feterik needs six more TD passes to replace Gary Sheide on the all-time leaderboard at BYU.

Injury Report

BYU

Carlos Nuno (TE) -- He will be out three to six weeks after having surgery to repair his MCL last week.

Rob Morris (LB) -- He's listed as a game-time decision with his abdominal strain.

Mike Nielsen (RB) -- He will be out for another two to four weeks with a broken bone on the top of his right foot.

Cal

Mike Ainsworth (WR) -- Though just a freshman, he is Cal's top receiver.  He left last week's game with a tight hamstring but is expected to play on Saturday.

Joel Young (WR) -- He was knocked out of last week's game with a dislocated shoulder and will be out three to five weeks.

Ronnie Davenport (WR) -- Cal's other starting receiver, he didn't travel to Washington State last week after suffering an ankle sprain in practice.  He is tentatively expected to play on Saturday.

Jerry DeLoach (DT) -- Rated as high as the #5 defensive tackle in the nation, he's missed the last two games with a neck stinger, but may make his return vs. BYU.

Chidi Iwuoma (CB) -- He sat out the WSU game with a sprained ankle and is listed as questionable.

Scott Tercero (OL) -- This highly touted true freshman earned a starting spot against ASU two weeks ago, but missed last week's game with a groin strain.  He will be a game-time decision.

Pigskin Classic Eyeing BYU-FSU Matchup Next Year
See:  http://heraldextra.com/dh/Dhtoday.nsf/Sports/C4BEB89064AECB398725680300273160

It looks as if BYU may play the first football game of the NCAA's new century.  Reports and rumors indicate that there's a good chance that the Cougars will meet the Seminoles of Florida State University in the annual Pigskin Classic, scheduled for August 26, 2000.

"The exposure would be excellent," said BYU athletic director Val Hale.  "To play three games on the East Coast would be great."  The Cougars are also scheduled to open play at Virginia's brand new stadium on September 9, and at Syracuse on September 30.

Holmoe's Back Home for Emotional Game
See:  http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/1,1249,120006856,00.html?

When the California Golden Bears take the field at Cougar Stadium this evening, their head coach will probably remember many other moments there.  Tom Holmoe played his college ball as an All-WAC defensive back for the Cougars in the early 1980's, and following a career with the San Francisco 49ers, served on LaVell Edwards' coaching staff for two years.  Since then, Holmoe has coached as an assistant with the 49ers and at Stanford before moving on to the Cal program.

Although he has enjoyed his time in Berkeley building up California's team, he has always had an interest in his alma mater's program.  In fact, his contract with Cal includes a clause that prohibited him from becoming BYU's coach during the first three years of his tenure.  A month ago when he was named as a frontrunner to replace Edwards whenever he retires, he was afraid it would hurt his recruiting efforts at Cal, so when it was announced that BYU had signed Edwards to another five years, Holmoe had his secretary fax the press release to all of his recruits.

Holtry's Making a Home at BYU
See:  http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/1,1249,125007056,00.html?

After playing two years for national power Michigan and winning a national championship with them, Jeff Holtry is happy with his decision to transfer to BYU.  "It's a lot of fun," said Holtry. "I'm really happy. Things are working out great. I have no regrets, no regrets at all."

In his four games with the Y, Holtry has made 19 tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery.  After starting the first two games of the year at outside linebacker, he's adjusted well to the middle spot as he's filled in for the injured Rob Morris, whose place he'll take permanently next year.  However, he looks forward to his fellow linebacker's return.  "I guarantee he'd be the starter at Michigan or any other team. He's an excellent linebacker, and I'm not just saying that because he's a teammate," said Holtry of Morris. "I believe he's got a feel for the game. He's quick and he's hard-nosed."

Feterik Finally Gets a Chance to See Cal Play, but as Cougs' QB
See:  http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/1999/10/08/SP98806.DTL

Kevin Feterik was  t h i s  close to spending his collegiate football days as the quarterback at Cal, but a coaching change made him opt for BYU.  Former Cal coach Keith Gilbertson offered Feterik a scholarship during his junior year in high school, but after going 3-8 in 1995, he was replaced with Steve Mariucci.  Although Mariucci offered to honor the scholarship request, Feterik wasn't sure where he'd end up on the depth chart in a new coach's system, so he inked with the Cougars.  "It was tough, you know?" said Feterik. "I liked it and I was all excited, but the coaching change turned me off."

After just one season, Mariucci moved on to coach the 49ers and was replaced by Tom Holmoe.  Now the Bears could use Feterik's experience, but instead will have to pin their hopes on a quick defensive front seven that will be sure to try to rattle the senior QB.  Utah State was able to put far too many hits on him last week, even knocking him out of the game for a few minutes.  "We're going to have to get open quick," said Feterik, who barely practiced this week because of soreness. "I'm not going to have a lot of time."

Former Cougar DB Heading for NFL
See:  http://sports.latimes.com/news/19991008/lat/19991008fj97z7gy.html

Jack Williams played cornerback and safety for BYU during the 1997 campaign before heading back to California because his wife was homesick.  Now he's playing for a different Cougar team as a senior for the defending NAIA national champion Azusa Pacific.  Besides playing in the defensive backfield, he's also seeing success on the other side of the ball as a running back.  In fact, Williams has been in on 2/3 of the team's plays this year, and is projected to go in the fourth round of next year's NFL draft, probably as a safety.

This article tells about his sad and unique background; Williams grew up in abject poverty, and his usually unemployed parents would move from one place to another, mostly staying in a run-down motel, from which they would often hastily depart when they weren't able to pay the bill.  Jack started playing football in high school only as a bet with a friend as to who could be listed higher on the depth chart.  Now it looks like it will be his ticket to a better life, enabling him to never look back on his past.

Young Will Sit Out Again on Sunday
See:  http://espn.go.com/nfl/news/1999/1008/103436.html

Still suffering from post-concussion symptoms, Steve Young will sit out his second game in a row as backup Jeff Garcia runs the show.  "We're going to sit him down," coach Steve Mariucci said Friday after the team's final practice before leaving for St. Louis.  "Let's rest him. I think it's the appropriate thing to do.  Hopefully, he'll feel great next week.  I visited with Steve before practice and we both agreed that's the right plan right now."

Young suffered his third concussion in four years two weeks ago when he was knocked out during a 24-10 win at Arizona.  He admitted Wednesday that he was still feeling the effects of the hit, including periodic headaches, grogginess and fatigue.  "I couldn't get the work done that I needed to get done but it's getting better every day," Young said.

Game Recap

California learned a lesson that four other teams already had been taught this season: Kevin Feterik is a good quarterback.

Feterik passed for 414 yards and four touchdowns as 17th-ranked Brigham Young celebrated its return to the rankings with a 38-28 victory over California.

Feterik entered the game 13th in the country in passing and did nothing to hurt that spot. He completed 25-of-41 passes and was intercepted three times. The four touchdown passes pushed the lefthander's season total in five games to 16, to go along with 1,717 yards.

He wasted little time in picking apart the Golden Bears defense, which came into the contest ranked 96th against the pass.

After a fruitless first possession, Feterik connected with Jonathan Pittman on a 41-yard TD pass and found Tevita Ofahengaue from 28 yards, giving the Cougars (4-1) a 14-0 advantage through one quarter.

Feterik added TD passes of 29 yards to Margin Hooks in the second quarter and 44 yards to Pittman in the fourth as the Cougars won their second straight game following a loss to Virginia.

California (2-3) had half of its offense from its defense. Cornerback Deltha O'Neal returned an interception 19 yards for a TD in the second and safety Damian Marzett brought back a pick 80 yards with 18 seconds left in the third period to pull the Bears within 24-21.

But following Marzett's interception, Feterik found Pittman for the second time from 44 yards just 2:49 into the fourth, restoring the Cougars' double-digit advantage.

Notes:

Jeff Holtry, starting in place of the injured Rob Morris, was up all night before the game with his wife, who delivered a child at 1:45am.

Owen Pochman tied the BYU record for career field goals with his 34th tonight.  He may set a record that will never be reached.  Pochman is a junior and has another season and a half to add to the record.

Luke Staley, currently 4th in the nation in scoring, added one more touchdown to his season total tonight.  He currently has 8 touchdowns.

Cougar Receivers Have Lived Up to Billing
See:  http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/1,1249,125007333,00.html?

At the beginning of this year's football season, Kevin Feterik said he was going to depend on his receivers to make big plays.  So far they have come through on their end of the bargain.  A year's experience and the infusion of new players such as Jonathan Pittman have given the Cougars one of the deepest and most talented groups of receivers in recent history.

Even when an occasional ball is dropped, Feterik doesn't lose confidence in his teammates.  "We don't worry about that," he said.  "Those guys make enough big plays.  Drops don't bother us any more."

Returning Starters to Anchor Men's Basketball Team
See:  http://newsnet.byu.edu/noframes/show_story.cfm?number=1977&year=current

Entering his third year as BYU's head basketball coach, Steve Cleveland will enjoy a luxury that hasn't been his until now.  He will actually get some players back.  In his first year at the helm of the Cougar program, he had to put all new starters on the court.  Last year he had to come up with four of five.  This year however, only the spot vacated by missionary Mark Bigelow will need to be filled.

This article gives a breakdown of each individual player and the role he will play this year for the basketball team.  Players that have been particularly impressive over the summer include Michael Vranes, Todd Christensen and Mekeli Wesley.  Coaches also expect Silester Rivers to play his best ball yet after coming back from a summer ankle injury.

Secondary Changes Pay Off for Coug Defense
See:  http://www.sltrib.com/1999/oct/10101999/sports/36537.htm

BYU has shuffled its starters around in the defensive backfield recently, and the results have been impressive.  Tyson Smith stepped in at strong safety in place of Tyler Nelson on Saturday night, and Jared Lee started ahead of Elan Edwards at free safety for the second week in a row.

Smith was particularly impressive, having a breakthrough night.  Not only did he do a great job on coverage and tackling, but he got into the backfield and created some havoc as well.  "We blitzed him early and tried to rattle him," he said, referring to Cal's freshman QB Kyle Boller, "and we got to him a little bit."  All told, the Cougar defense gave up only two touchdowns, one of which came against the second and third stringers with two seconds left in the game.

Feterik Mauled by Cal Defense
See:  http://www.heraldextra.com/dh/dharc1999.nsf/BySection/872567A2007A0EB0872568060026D0AB

This is becoming all too familiar of a scene -- Kevin Feterik limped into the interview room on Saturday night following his 414 yard performance against Cal with ice packs covering most of his body.  When he sat down, he let out a painful groan before melting into his chair.  "I'm pretty sore," he said.  "I thought last week was bad.  Tonight was like a nightmare."

Although the Cougars' O-line probably won't go up against another defense front as talented as Cal's for the rest of this season, BYU's coaches know that things can't go on this way.  "He's lucky to be able to walk," said offensive coordinator Norm Chow.  "We've got to do something.  A lot of times, they were bringing just four guys."

The Heisman Hype Begins for Feterik
See:  http://www.sltrib.com/1999/oct/10131999/sports/37323.htm

Kevin Feterik's fabulous play this season has combined with subpar performances from pre-season Heisman favorites to lauch the Cougar QB into contention for the most coveted individual award in collegiatiate sports.  The senior has completed 65% of his passes through his first five games this year, connecting with his receivers for an impressive 1,817 yards and 16 touchdowns.  Gaudy numbers like that, along with his resiliency and toughness, have pushed him into the top five on most Heisman watch lists.

Although there are those who would think that Feterik's on-field heroics may prove to be too little too late to garner the trophy, BYU is mounting an effort to promote him.  Jeff Reynolds, BYU's director of football media relations, said, "In our opinion, it's never too late until the trophy has been handed out."  Next week, the department will mail a promotional interactive CD called "Quarterback Factory, Version 7.0" to members of the media.

Young Wants to Play Despite Pleas to Retire
See:  http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/1,1249,125007983,00.html?

According to those closest to former BYU great Steve Young, he has taken enough hits during his NFL career.  His family, friends, and even his agent are all of the opinion that it's time for him to give up the game in order to protect his health.  The concussion he suffered on September 27 has proved to be more serious than originally thought, and as a result Young has been held out of games for the past two weeks.

His own man as always, Young wants that decision to be made primarily by himself and his medical consultants.  The former NFL MVP will meet with his neurologist, Dr. Gary Steinberg, and team physician Dr. James Klint, sometime today or Thursday, and their recommendations will go a long way in influencing him.  Young's agent, Leigh Steinberg, said, "If a doctor told him he risked serious future ramifications imperiling his ability to think long term or he risked possible brain damage, I think that would have an impact on him."

Setting the Standard:  Anna-Lena Smith Poised to Break Record
See:  http://www.sltrib.com/1999/oct/10121999/sports/37016.htm

Anna-Lena Smith has been a great setter during her career as a BYU volleyball player, and she's on her way to going down in the record books as the best.  The senior from Arizona is only 129 assists away from breaking the current record held by Charlene Johnson, who led BYU to its only Final Four six years ago and has since gone on to start on the U.S. National Team.

Although she is excited to leave her mark on the program as an individual, her biggest goal is to help the team take the next step and win the national championship.  "That would be bigger," she said. "It's something I could celebrate with my whole team, and something I could give back to BYU. . . . If we play like we can play and like we know how to play, no one can beat us."

Smith, who is engaged to marry Cougar basketball player Eric Nielsen on December 30, will unfortunately probably not break the record in the Smith Fieldhouse.  After a road trip to Utah and home game against Notre Dame during the next week, the Lady Cougars have four straight matches on the road.

Attitude Adjustment Pays Big Dividends for Cougars
See:  http://www.desnews.com/dn/view/1,1249,125007506,00.html?

The BYU football team's defense looked markedly better in last weekend's 38-28 victory over Cal than it had in its previous two games.  When asked why, defensive end Ryan Denney said it really came down to the little things such as running back to the huddle between plays instead of jogging.  "I think that may have made a big difference — something as small as that."  LaVell Edwards echoed Denney, saying, "The defense came out ready to play tonight,"

The coach also had positive words for the special teams unit that struggled early in the season.  Kicker Owen Pochman was a perfect 5-for-5 on PATs, and made his only field goal attempt, a 44-yarder that put the junior in the #1 spot in the Cougar record book for field goals made.  On going 100% for the first time this season, Pochman said, "It was nice.  It was something I've just been patiently working towards.  This whole season I haven't ever doubted myself and I haven't really changed anything.  It looks like we've got the blocking down real nice and everything. All the elements are falling into place.  So, we'll just kind of take it from here."

Shawn Bradley Copes with Back Pain
See:  http://basketball.dallasnews.com/mavs/1008mavsdate.htm

Former BYU basketball star Shawn Bradley has been suffering from persistent back pain during two-a-day workouts with the Dallas Mavericks.  As a precaution, he has been sitting out of certain drills to avoid further injury.  "I'm doing things now to make sure I don't jeopardize being able to play in games," Bradley said.  "It's not like I'm not playing.  I'm just doing as much possible out there without making it so I can't walk."

The 27-year old father of four, who jokingly says he is getting old, has been advised that the pain may be a result of arthritis that would have come about because of his size, regardless of playing basketball.  His shot-blocking skills will be key for the Mavs again this year, especially because of a new NBA rule that allows zone defense on the strong side.

Feterik #1 Most Improved QB, Staley #3 Newcomer
See:  http://www.cnnsi.com/football/college/news/1999/10/11/first_half/index.html

Sports Illustrated columnist Stewart Mandel has compiled several lists of college football mid-season "bests."  Included on the lists are Kevin Feterik, as the most improved college quarterback, and Luke Staley, as the #3 newcomer.  Feterik has taken his game to a new level this year and leads the NCAA in total offense with 354 yards per game, while freshman tailback Staley ranks sixth in the nation in scoring with 12 points per game.
