I like lots of bands that have already been mentioned, but somet that haven't as well. Here we go... The Cure, Depeche Mode (saw them on Saturday in Toronto...best show I've ever seen!), The Smiths, Morrissey, the Clash, New Order, Joy Division, Tears for Fears, the Cult, INXS, David Bowie, U2, Bush, Veruca Salt, Nina Gordon (one of the artists most devoted to her fans that I've ever known!), Matchbox Twenty, Our Lady Peace, Chantal Kreviazuk, Sarah McLachlan, No Doubt, Coldplay, Yo La Tengo, My Bloody Valentine, and even a little Debbie Gibson and Tiffany (I'm not embarassed to admit this...I was born in 1980 and they were my first albums...I was just too young for the Cure back then!) I've realized lately that every season I become totally obsessed with a different band. I don't know what it is...maybe boredom or something. Last spring/summer it was the Cure, fall/winter was Yo La Tengo, and this spring/summer it's Depeche Mode. I just can't stop myself from falling for new bands...it's an expensive addiction! The guitarist in my band is a 50-something Zep fanatic and it goes without saying that the Cure are my biggest influence (I'm 24). So there's definitely a thread running through this... Some complimentary vibe... Hmm... Can You Tell The Difference Between Real Life and Reel-Life??? www.polymath.uk.com - -----Original Message----- From: c [mailto:skinny@jps.net] Sent: Thursday, June 21, 2001 08:23 To: descent@lists.xmission.com Subject: Re: (descent) Other Musical Interests This is pure poetry. I laughed for awhile. It is perfect, thank you blucadet3 do you connect?, "Just kidding ya!! Please dont flame me. Its a joke. HAHAHAHa" For a long time, Led Zep was my all-time favorite band. But then, I met a girl... To me, LZ can be similar to The Cure. They both have otherworldly, long instrumental sections in much of their music. I think that's why I like them so much. They both have (had) the ability to create emotive music for the listener. They can tell a story and set a mood for a song without singing a word. And when the Roberts do finally sing, it often only adds to the songs and not detracts. Professor Vast mentioned, "Here's a bit of trivia... Porl and some of the others used to play Zep covers back in the old days of The Cure (before he left way in the beginning)." It would seem to me that, at least when Porl was in The Cure, that there was a bit of a Led Zepplin influence running through the band. If I remember correctly, Porl left in the early days siting musical differences, and if I also remember correctly, one of Porl's all time favorite albums is (was) Led Zepplin II. Not to say that the instrumental portions of The Cure can be solely attributed to Led Zep, Robert Smith can be a great songwriter on his own tuition. But there does seem to be some correlation, at least, musically. - --chris One of the neatest things (my girl-friend thought it was somewhat blasphemous) was when Robert Plant sang 'Lullaby' with Porl Thompson on the No Quarter tour! - - To unsubscribe to descent, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe descent" in the body of the message. I would like to pose a little question to you all. This mostly effects Digest subscribers. I have had a few people complain that html based emails are allowed on this list. Reasons for complaints that I've been given are: a) If you're subscribed to the digest then all the html tags show up, making the emails hard to read. b) Some people use large fonts or annoying color schemes on their emails. I've had people unsubscribe from the list because of it and I've been trying to find a way to take the html out of the emails so that they come through as text only. I have, unfortunately been unsuccessful. (If you're a computer geek and have an easy solution, please write me seperately.) The question I have for you all, is first of all, does the html on some people's emails annoy you? For those of you who don't know what html is, it's the emails that come through with colors and different fonts. Also, if it does annoy you, would you like me to start blocking any html based mails? The only ones I wouldn't block are those coming from aol, since they don't have any way around it. Please reply PRIVATELY... I don't want to bog the list down with something this trivial. Thanks! "best of's" might contain something different... Look at the Blur "best of" that came out last year... a complete mixture of singles, album tracks and live recordings. It depends on who decides what is considered the BEST. It could well be that Fiction have the right to release compilations without necessarily NEEDING Robert's permission. - -----Original Message----- From: EireGirl [mailto:eiregirl@usinternet.com] Sent: Monday, June 25, 2001 20:13 To: descent@lists.xmission.com Subject: RE: (descent) petition against greatest hits! i don't agree that it is useless, it may be commercial, but i know many a person that got introduced to The Cure through their greatest hits collections. i think it is a good idea. i like best of collections. ~~eiregirl - -----Original Message----- From: owner-descent@lists.xmission.com [mailto:owner-descent@lists.xmission.com]On Behalf Of Mauro Lombardo Sent: Monday, June 25, 2001 1:04 PM To: descent Subject: (descent) petition against greatest hits!
