I don't sit around and listen to it very much, but as I recall a lot of the "Don Ho" side was radio promos for Beatle Concerts and interviews with some of the more obscure members of the fab-entorage (such as the guy who sat in for Ringo when illness caused him to miss a couple of shows.) Overall my point is that this record seemed to have nothing to do with Don H. at all and would only be of interest to the most extreame sort of Beatle fan. Dear all - It's been a while since my last posting but I'm still out here happily reading away! To make up for my quietude, this is admittedly a bit of an over-long post! FIRST: Thank you thank you thank you to KRIS@MOM.SPIE.ORG for the pointer to Joe Meek (and others for their subsequent discussions). I was in Glasgow (Scotland that is!) on Friday for a charity shop raid. Details of that soon but I also decided to go for the Triumph CD "The Joe Meek Story: Vol 1" as it has all four tracks from his "I Hear a New World" EP (though I've since found out (through this list) that the whole "I Hear.." LP is available on CD) - what a space cadet! I picked up quite a few other goodies on that trip, highlights being: Robert Edwin - "Keep the Rumor Going" on Avant Garde Records (no date) [has a truly groovy version of the Lord's Prayer and other biblical hits!] Rigonda - "How Stereo Works" [a Russian-made demo disk with an explanation of stereo in English but with heavy Russian accent!] 2-3 7" EPs on the Spanish "Belter" label from '64, including a very kooky one by "Los 3 Sudamericanos"! Anyone know about Belter? Dean Martin - Dino Latino (!) Carribean! - Harry Belafonte/The Islanders [has a beautful sleeve - naked women hiding behind a conga!] But, excuse me, I must have a wee rant at this point - I wandered into CASA Records (on Glasgow's main Sauchiehall Street) on the off chance and was astonished. They have RACKS AND RACKS of really nice "Light Orchestral" and "International" stuff (including Ferrante & Teicher, Roberto Delgado, Pepe Jaramillo, Chaquito and squillions more) - nothing phenomenally rare but still almost exotica/cheasy listening heaven. The only thing is they're charging 7-8-9 pounds (10-15 dollars) per item! And many of the things I've been picking up recently for 50p-1 pound from charity shops were sitting in these racks. This was quite demoralising as I realised that most of the charity shops I was about to spend the day searching through would have been mopped up by this shop so they could slap on anything from a 700-1600% markup! OUTRAGEOUS! I gather this phenomenon is quite rife (and a lot worse!) in the States but this is my first experience of this worrying trend over here! I don't understand this policy - if they charged 3-4 pounds (still a sizeable markup) for this stuff, I know _I'd_ be a lot more likely to spend oodles of cash there! So, on one hand, I heartily recommend CASA as an emporium to check out if any of you ever happen to be in Glasgow - but ONLY if you've got lots of money you don't mind feeding to greedy dealers! [BTW: If anyone wants information on charity/record shops in Edinburgh/Glasgow, let me know.] Yours fumingly... Hello All! The October 13th issue of Goldmine Record Collector's magazine contains a large article on Esquivel. It is written by a Hans Morgenstern. There are also 2 other feature articles, the Jackson 5 (cover photo) and Rolf Harris. Joseph Lanza's book on Elevator Music has just been released in trade paperback here in Canada and probably elsewhere. It is half the price of the hardback copy. CBC's new exotica radio show, Radio Shangri-La, is *very* well done. They are even including some great vocal performances from 50's/60's lounge singers like Sammy Davis. Not exotica, but interesting none the less is the book by Ian Macdonald called "Revolution in the Head". He does an exceptional job of analyzing each Beatle recording in chronological order. He has also written an interesting chapter placing the Beatles and 60's pop music in the context of the day, and how it may be viewed in hindsight. Yep! here's the song list: Side One: Where Shall I Go Pretty As A Moonbeam I Love You Too Much Havannah Negila Raisins and Almonds Mazeltov Merengue David's Dance (Reb Duvidel) Side Two: Joseph! Joseph! Little Shawl (Dus Talesel) Belz Miami Merengue (Rabbi Elle Melech) My Yiddische Momme Cha Cha No. 29 Bei Mir Bist Du Schon Here's the liner notes (by Saul M. Sagel): A "bagel," friends, is an edible object shaped like a donut, considerably harder, and usually happily consumed buttered or embellished with cream cheese and "lox" (smoked salmon). "Bongos" are a pair of small drums primarily associated with Latin American rythyms. Although you will hear the bongos played to perfection in this album, no one, not even the vers- atile and inventive Irving Fields, has devised a way to play a bagel. Its in the title is purely symbolic. In this unusual album, Mr. Fields and his trio (Fields at the piano; Henry Sargent, bass; and Michael Bruno on drums) present a collection of exciting dance-tempo arrangements for piano and instrumental accompaniment. Set to the rythyms of the cha-cah, merengue, bolero and rumba, the melodies include several long-popular Yiddish favorites: Bei Mir Bist Du Schon, Where Shall I Go, and Joseph! Joseph!, among others. Through the magic of Field's arrangements, the trio delivers a sound that is comletely distinctive, and which remarkably appoaches the quality of a full orchestra. Presently featured at New York's well-known Astor Hotel, they are in constant demand at top hotels and night clubs throughout the country. They have performed in innumerable leading TV variety shows, at concerts and in theaters. Fields and the boys, who teamed up when they were quite young, havve been together for over 16 years. Irving Fields, the versatile leader of the famous trio, is a pianist without peer, a highly imaginative arranger, and the composer of well-known hits such as "Miami Beach Rumba," "Managua, Nicuragua," "Chantez Chantez," and his latest "Teazin'." Adept at writing anything from a noevty tune to a symphony, his "An American Forest" was performed at Carnegie Hall. Mr. Fields, who feels that melody is "the predominant feature of all good music" combines this factor with unique and intersting rythyms, resulting in delightful interpretations of all types of music. His eminent mastery of Latin American music--his favorite kind-- is derived from extensive travel and study in South America and the West Indies. The authenticity of the "Yiddish flavor" so ingenuosly woven inot the arrangements in this collec- tion comes from his early experience in the Jewish theater. Listen now as the Irving Fields Trio melodically blend Bagels and Bongos. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: bcleve@tiac.net (Brother Cleve) Subject: Esquivel article Date: 04 Oct 1995 18:37:10 -0400 <# Replies to this message will go to: <# bcleve@tiac.net (Brother Cleve) <# To respond to the list, please mail your message to exotica@xmission.com. <# For help unsubscribing, say "HELP" in a message to majordomo@xmission.com. Howdy- I just got "The Lost Episode of Les Baxter" from Dionysus. It's about 18 minutes long and has 6 tunes from an old Les Baxter T.V. special, so the sound is very lo-fi. Not really noisy, but the dynamic range is pretty limited. With that in mind, there are some pretty amazing performances, including an great version of "Ruby" with Beverly Ford doing the soprano-as-theremin thang. They never mention what T.V. special it's from, but it might be "Les Baxter- Sounds of the 60's", which should be available for viewing at the Museum of Broadcasting in NYC. Hello exotica fans. My name is Jeff, I live in Boston and have been collecting ezee listening/exotica records since moving here in 1988. Boston has a great used record store scene and you used to be able to get all kinds of weird stuff for a dollar or less. Now it's totally different. Stores like Looney Tunes and Mystery Train (the best in Boston for this genre) have jacked up the prices as expected. At least I got my hands on some stuff before the recent popularity. I heard about this list on a web site of musical mailing lists. My fave exotica artist is Enoch Light. I look forward to learning more about the genre as this list grows. So, does anyone know anything about the CDs being released on October 24 by both Martin Denny and Esquivel? jeff. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: mbconkli@rs6000.cmp.ilstu.edu (Mark Conklin) Subject: Esquivel Boots Date: 06 Oct 1995 09:56:40 -0500 (CDT) <# Replies to this message will go to: <# mbconkli@rs6000.cmp.ilstu.edu (Mark Conklin) <# To respond to the list, please mail your message to exotica@xmission.com. <# For help unsubscribing, say "HELP" in a message to majordomo@xmission.com. > Hey- > > I just saw an Esquivel boot of Esquivel '68 and the Genius of Esquivel on one > CD at Venus Records, here in NYC. I recently acquired a number of Enoch Light/Command recordings on open-reel tape, and have been busily archiving these onto CD. In the process of doing so I ran off an extra copy of a CD containing "Stereo 35/MM" and "Stereo 35/MM Vol. 2". Both titles on one CD (one track is dropped because it would push it over the 74-minute limit). The sound is great; since it's from open-reel tapes there is no LP record noise, turntable rumble, etc. Anyhow, if anyone is interested in this, please Email me. It'll be yours for $25, including US shipping. I also have a CD I made earlier with highlights from 5 or 6 Enoch Light open-reel issues, including the two 35/MMs, a couple of movie themes recordings, and a few more. About 70 minutes of music and also from open-reel tapes. I don't need it any more since I've redone the same selections on other CDs. $20 takes this one. Just wanted to let everyone here know that I am putting together an Exotica Tribute record, It is going to come out in late spring 96 on my label Ultra Modern(part of the TRG (Twin Tone Records Group) the music is going to be more less evenly divided between Les Baxter and Martin Denny but there may be a tune or two by others from that camp. I can't really tell you whose on it , or what songs we are doing(yet) but if you have suggestions please let me know The money for it will be going to charity(as yet undecided), I actually got to speak to Martin Denny himself, I asked him what charity he thought money should go to, I am still hoping to speak with Les Baxter( not a lot of leads on how to get a hold of him though) If you have Suggestions please Mail me Thanks - -Chris PS. anyone know about this Tiki convention in LA..? - -----/:::\/::::::\-------------------------------------------------------------- /:::::::::::::\ * /:::::::::::::::\ * ********************* I have nothing clever to say \ "" "" / \ (@) (@) / \ J / \ --- / \________/ - ---------/ \------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "C" Subject: Some things that I recently acquired. I bought the "More Moondog/The story of" CD by Moondog from WFMU's fabulous catalog of curiosities (this is only 1 of the many exotic & strange & wonderfull artists I discovered thanx to WFMU). Because I thought it would be fun to play his strange percussion sounds at different speeds, I looked around for an LP, and I found one: "Moondog", on Columbia (MS 7335). To my surprise, this LP contains symphonic music; and even greater was my surprise to hear his "Theme" and "Symphonique" which resemble very much to Phil Glass' Koyaanisqatsi! Off course, Glass came later, but I would like to know: 1) when this "Moondog" LP was recorded (not mentioned anywhere) 2) does the other Moondog CD from WFMU's catalog,(his second album from 1954) contain the same kind of percussion-only music as "More Moondog/The story of"? Exoticites: If anyone has a complete track list for all the Esquivel releases, I'd love to add it to the information on Space Age Bachelor Pad Music on the World Wide Web. In fact, I'd like to add more articles. Anyone who cares to pen an essay, or who would like me to reprint an existing one, drop me a line. In related news, the site may be extra busy this week. Someone from Entertainment Weekly dropped me a line saying the site is mentioned in this week's cover story. I haven't yet seen it. Because my provider throttles my site, excluding all visitors, everytime more than 2MB of data passes through per hour, I've turned off the sound downloads for two weeks. My apologies. I live in New York City, probably the most difficult place to collect this stuff. Any resources that are not ridiculously overpriced are so well picked over by the rest of you that it's hardly worth trying... However, I'm _obsessive_ about peeking into the same thrift shops on a regular basis, poring over collections, and I manage to find plenty. I particularly enjoy the percussion/stereo stuff, and I'm starting a good collection of Jewish-themed material (recent acquisition: "Jewish Aerobics.") Hi there, Here's some recent buys from "Trash and Treasure". I love the "3 for a dollar" box! Space Experience - John Keating: SQ Quad featuring the EMS Synthi VCS3 Music Synthesiser. A mix of covers and originals with typical VCS3 noises and whooshes over a fairly bland drum/orchestara combo. great cover shots of SpaceLab (I think). Keating:Sounds Unlimited - John Keating: A compilation including a couple of great tracks by The Electronic Philharmonic Orchestra. Nice cover photos of an astronaut spacewalking. Switched On Rock - The Moog Machine: Fabulous moog covers sounding a lot like Devo's muzak stuff and including lengthy cover notes on the difficulties of keeping the beast in tune and the trials of recording one note at a time. Command Stereo Checkout: One side featuring Charles Stark giving our system a "technically precise" yet "uncomplicated and understandable acoustical check out". The other side has him introducing 4 tracks from Enoch Light albums with a description of the instrumentation and their challenge to our system. Persuasive Percussion Volume 2. Pop Explosion Sitar Style from Sagram. This actually sounds like quite legitimate Indian music repackaged in a '60's San Francisco incense and cheescloth cover. Topo Gigio: everyones favourite singing rat. The Sky; The Sea; Home to the Sea: 3 of the 4 albums by Anita Kerr and Rod McKuen. "Bathtub Surfing" is a standout. A few assorted Ferrante and Teichers and Al Caiolas which I haven't listened to yet. If anyone can fill me in on John Keating, Sagram or The Moog Machine it would be much appreciated. Happy hunting. I have been buying these cha-cha records by Perez Prado, Xavier Cugat, Machito, and unknowns primarily for their covers which always show a man (often back in the shadows, suave, sophisticated), a cocktail (sometimes in the man's hand, sometimes on a table) and a woman (in the foreground, in an advanced state of Cha-Cha Fever). These women are always sexy, beautiful things (c. 1955 sexy, beautiful, that is). I was in my local record store yesterday and, to my utter astonishment, I found an Esquivel CD reissue on from Reprise. It is "More of Other Worlds, Other Sounds" and is Reprise 2-45844 (first released in 1962). Since New York is the worst place in the world to buy stuff cheap, you should go out of town. Most mid-sized university towns have lots of stores and if you want your dollar to go further try Toronto. Despite the high sales taxes the difference between the US$ and Canadian $ is such that you can save alot of money here. Some of the New York vendors buy up here and then resell down in New York. Some good stores are Driftwood Music, Penguin Music, Rotate This and Vortex. There are at least a dozen other smaller stores. As a long-time lurker here, it's interesting that it took Mr. Waring to draw me out ... I have been fascinated by Fred Waring's arrangements since listening to one of his Christmas albums throughout my childhood -- there is a sound, a feeling that he coaxes from his singers and arrangements that is unparallelled. I pick up his LPs whenever I find them (whether I already own them or not), and have quite a collection. Just got a Mint copy of Dem Bones on the old breakable Decca vinyl (was it even vinyl?), and it is truly remarkable. Is it Exotica? Well, what is exotica? If this newsgroup can't sustain discussion of anything that is even slightly off the beaten path, then it's missed the point (which, by the way, I don't think it has--I greatly enjoy the postings here). I just picked up "More Of Other Worlds, Other Sounds" today. Sounds great. Musically, I'd say it's a little less quirky than the RCA material, but there are some pretty neat touches. And Esquivel could play a mean piano as well. Questions: Is the CD cover art from the LP ? It looks pretty clean/modern for 1962. I realise the design style of the CD is definitely rooted in that era, but I'm just wondering if Esquivel's audience were redecorating *their* living rooms, too. I still don't understand the jabber about 120 cm/s mastering. Hello. I haven't seen any commerce on this list yet... feel free to flame if I'm out of line, but... I don't collect this stuff to sit on my shelves, I only keep what I listen to. As a relative neophyte, it's taking some time to discover what I like, and I've got some items I'd like to see gone. Currently gathering dust: a Promo-only pressing of "'round the World with Les Baxter." The label on the vinyl reads "Sample album for Radio-TV use" It's in absolutely perfect condition. It's probably only ever been played a few times. Also, I have a monaural copy of Mr. Baxter's "Skins" in excellent condition. I also want to get rid of my "Let's dance with the three Suns," and an extra copy of the Stereo Action demonstration disc (7") which I'd throw in with either of the above. Though it says more about unscrupulous record dealers than about the records, I've seen these in boutiques here for _big_ bucks. I'd like to trade for Stereo Action, latin titles or Percussion stuff... any takers? Recent Buy: I found an album this weekend called "Herb Bernstien's New Crusade." it's from the late 60's, (maybe 70's even.) For some reason, Mr. Bernstien has chosen the _Tuba_ as the lead instrument for interpreting such classics as "Land of 1000 dances" and originals like "Herb's Herbs." The Tuba is backed by flamenco guitar, piccolos, a bit of Mendes-inspired scatting, "exotic" touches and a self-described "funky" trio of drummers. Better in theory than practice... but with a great, tasteless album cover that manages to incorporate both racism and bathroom humor! Regarding the use of the tuba as a lead instrument: I am reminded of a truly bizarre track that may fall outside the principal interests of exotica lovers, but is quite wonderful. In around 1974, Gil Evans recorded a big-band tribute album to the music of Jimi Hendrix. On it, the estimable tubist Howard Johnson plays lead on "Voodoo Child", but does it on the tuba mouthpiece only. Later in the track he takes a solo on "full tuba," but that leadoff is outstanding! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Aaron Oppenheimer Subject: Tuba (was Re: Herb Bernstien, also for trade?...) Whistling Records? Irritating? Bah! Try anything by Fred Lowery. The man could whistle the pants off a repulsively fat naked man. As far as musical saws go, I have a good saw record called "The Well Tempered Saw" by Bob Turner. It has too much classical material on it, but a couple of good things also. It was on a small folk label out of Boulder, Co. As far as Johan's question about WFMU's "They Came, They Played, They Blocked The Driveway," there's nothing strange or unusual about that one at all. It's made up of more or less normal bands that played live on the air at the station. You can get a full track listing of what's on it on our website (address below). best things on it are Hasil Adkins, The Cowboy Junkies and The Dentists. But exotic it aint. Both Moondog titles that we carry consist largely of that inimitable Moondog percussion. I'm busy getting ready the upcoming FMU catalog. New items that we'll be carrying that would be of interest to folks here: New Esquivel on RCA, Space Age Pop compilations, Les Baxter's Lost Sessions, Silver Apples CD, Fred Lane, Joe Meek's "I Hear A New World," Roger Roger, Pascal Comelade, Serge Gainsbourg w/ Brigitte Bardot, Speedy West, Wesley Willis, Ennio Morricone, new Charles Manson, and a mess 'o other catfish. The catalog will be out November 15th. We also scheduled another FMU record fair, speaking of record shopping in New York. It'll be December 2 & 3 at 440 East 12th Street in NYC. If there's stuff people are dying to get, I could alert our dealers to it, but you know how these dealers are. If they know you really want something, it aint gonna be cheap. Got here by doing searches on various engines to see what turned up under "Exotica". It worked like a charm. A little background: I'm a relatively new vinyl collector --been at it approximately 2 years. I got turned on to Martin Denny first, when I inherited copies of "Primitiva" and "Afro-Desia" from a nextdoor neighbor who was promoted to the Big Casino. Now I'm thoroughly addicted, and have assembled a modest but incomplete collection. Although I hardly qualify as a DJ, I do have the requisite equipment, and my dream is to find a venue where I can actively mix exotic lounge music for a cocktail crowd. It seems like the time should be right. I'm hoping those of you on this list with more experience at this game might be able to help me find new sources for locating burried treasure. There are still some must-have platters out there I would dearly like to find. I realize there is a want-list dedicated to this purpose, and various classified advertising services online too, but so far they haven't panned out for me. I am certainly willing pay collectors prices for rare titles, but lately the market has grown downright nasty (at least around San Francisco). An example: "Latin-Esque", by Mr. Esquivel. This is the only one of his left that I really need, but there just don't seem to be any around anywhere unless you're prepared to shell out a C-note. I'm simply not that strung out (yet). I am also actively hunting for a couple Prado titles, and at least 3 of the more rare Les Baxter albums. Any suggestions? Don't bother suggesting Saturn in Oakland. I can't stomach their pricing habits. Thanks for wading through all this babble. Hope to be reading a lot more. How does an LP with the title >of "New Crusade" evoke both racist and scatological imagery? I actually put this one on again last night, and his version of "My Girl" stands out as one of the oddest arrangements I've heard in a while. A harpsichord and sitar-y sounding thing play the rising bassline, while the tuba takes the vocal part, and flutes and scattin' fill in the rest. As for the cover: It features Herb Bernstien, a dark, chunky, 35-ish, semitic brunette with a bit of an overbite, front and center in a knight's costume. He is surrounded by his group dressed up as a multi-ethnic band of merry men . The tuba is prominently featured, being played by an "Arab" (In a Kaffya, kissing a belly-dancer's feet) while a "Jew" (carrying a box of matzo and a bottle of Manischewitz) and some other ethnic-looking fellow looks on. Meanwhile, a "gypsy" or "turkish" guy making a kind of Don Knotts face is in a little booth, smoking a hookah, and holding a roll of toilet paper, to make it seem as if we caught him "going potty." If I remember correctly, the first crusades weren't so nice! Why would we think a new one is charming and funny!? And as if that weren't strange enough... it says on the album cover that he arranged for Laura Nyro and the Cowsills (!?) Does anyone know anything about this guy? The album is from the 70's so I don't even know if it's really exotica... but it _is_ very strange. - -E ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Watterworth Jay Subject: Re: screamin' jay Date: 24 Oct 1995 09:22:41 -0600 (MDT) <# Replies to this message will go to: <# Watterworth Jay <# To respond to the list, please mail your message to exotica@xmission.com. <# For help unsubscribing, say "HELP" in a message to majordomo@xmission.com. No Moog stuff, but Nashville just as well: last week I bought Class of '66 by one Flloyd Cramer, RCA records 1966. Cramer is a pianist who covers numerous standards from that year, "Nasville Sound", as the sleeve notes. The wackiest track is a rendition of The Beatles' Paperback Writer. The recird is produced by none other then.....Chet Atkins! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: dx@netcom.com (dx) Subject: Electronic Vanguard Date: 26 Oct 1995 07:33:54 -0700 <# Replies to this message will go to: <# dx@netcom.com (dx) <# To respond to the list, please mail your message to exotica@xmission.com. <# For help unsubscribing, say "HELP" in a message to majordomo@xmission.com. Does anyone know for sure if the Electronic Vanguard CDs are licensed or bootlegs? On the one hand, the copy of their disc pairing Martin Denny's "Exotic Moog" and Les Baxter's "Moog Rock" seems to have been mastered from vinyl. And their lack of any sort of information about where they licensed the material from suggests that they didn't. On the other hand, the inclusion of their *address* makes me wonder. - -dx ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "bill wynne" Subject: Record Collecting = Dust Collecting Date: 26 Oct 1995 13:21:59 EDT <# Replies to this message will go to: <# "bill wynne" <# To respond to the list, please mail your message to exotica@xmission.com. <# For help unsubscribing, say "HELP" in a message to majordomo@xmission.com. I want to thank whoever started the thread on this list concerning record buying habits. I buy so much so quickly it is impossible to listen to it all. I have nearly 3,500 records (not a lot by collectors' standards) but I bet I have listened to less than half of them. I just can't pass up a collectible LP. Thing is, not only have I not listened to all of them, I have invested in some artists that I don't even LIKE just because I found a "rarity." Now, I have spent so much money that I have little left to continue supporting my "habit." The solution: Clean house! I'm gonna sell approx. 500 LPs to start, and no, they won't all be cheap. (For example, a 1957 Louis Armstrong still in the shrink wrap does not come cheap.) But most will be rare to semi-rare, in VG+ to Mint condition. Most are instrumental jazz or jazz vocals, but I do have 40 or 50 exotica items to sell, including Arthur Lyman, Martin Denny, and Les Baxter. I won't bother the exotica mailing list group with a complete list of 500 LPs, not only because of the space limitations, but also because it would insult many of us to see a record we found at the Salvation Army for 50 cents being sold for $15. (Hey! If you've been looking for a record for 10 years and STILL haven't found it, exactly how much would you be willing to pay?) If you're interested in receiving the list, send me your E-mail address and I will forward a copy of the list to you as it becomes available (about 50 records at a time). And, again, thank you to whoever convinced me that all of those records on my shelf are worthless unless I am getting some enjoyment out of them. Maybe it's time somebody else got some enjoyment out of them. And maybe I'll make enough money to buy one or two records I'll really listen to...
