From: BeyerTh@t-online.de (Thomas Beyer) Subject: (fractint) Re: old magnetic1j Date: 01 Aug 1999 17:20:47 +0200 Obviously the "look for final attractor"-algorithm (which is ALWAYS used with magnetic fractals) has been altered between Version 15 and 16. There are even more differences: (tested with V15.13 and 19.2) 1) V15 adapts the "bailout-value" to the magnification factor. If you zoom into an attractor, the picture remains nearly the same. V19.2 uses a fixed (but unknown) threshold-value. 2) With V15 the final-attractor-display fails, if magnification exceeds 20000. 3) V15 doesn't detect cycles as finite attractors (only fixed points). Try the Julia-set -1 + 0i! I think the squares displayed in V15 are caused by an incorrect calculation of the distance. Circle: sqr(dx) + sqr(dy) < sqr(delta) Square: abs(dx) < delta AND abs(dy) < delta I'll try to verify this by analysing the source code. I'd appreciate some help! Lindsay There is a way via, I think, editing your sstools.ini, but I do not recall what it is. A work around which I use is to simply save the image (hit "s" after the image is generated); the image is saved as a .gif image in your fractint directory. Then open the image and either print it directly from the associated program, e.g. LViewPro, PSP, etc., or copy the image and paste it into a word processing program such as WP. You don't have to know DOS to run DOS either, but it helps. Actually just try to get it going and then experiment with it. The arrow keys come in pretty handy. Page up is for zooming. hit C twice for color-cycling And the DOS ver. is more powerful (AAR. AAR!) I'd appreciate some help! I recommend printing with some other software. Fractint does have some good prinbter drivers, but printer support is spotty, and the current authors know knothing about them. GIF is a universal format, so it is a simple matter to save the image as a GIF and print with any of hundreds of programs that do a good job. This is a beautiful method. A similar algorithm is used for creating 'fern', 'castle', etc. You can really observe the changing location of points every time you run the program yet the figure remains exactly the same. I have a ATI All-In-Wonder Pro AGP 8mb Vid/mem(Econo-version = not upgradable) and can't run above 800x600x256. My old computer which had a generic video card (Phoenix 32/64 with S3 Virge version chip set) could run FRACTINT @ 1024x768x256. This came into the discussion[s] of the list about the time I had to quit due to the previously mentioned ISP screw-ups which were over a year ago. Can anyone tell me where the driver is and/or who/whom wrote it and how do I contact them or will they contact me on how to get it? Whew! That was a mouth full! also DAMIEN, is the other list still running? PLEASE If so put me on it. BTW, What ever came of the registering of the FRACTINT name as an INTERNET domain? And it probably wouldn't take much effort. (Ever heard that one before?) I'd like it if I could store maps, formulas, IFS systems AND parameters in ".PAR" files. Actually, I already can. I can use a parameter entry which just contains a "color=" entry, and this works as a map. I can include "frm:" entries, which function as formulas... But FractInt doesn't look here when loading pictures. If we could have dedicated features to do these thing, I'd be very happy. I like using parameter sets for my formulas; it makes it possible to set the initial values of the paramiters (p1, etc). It also allows you to pick the best default colours (something that not even the built in fractal types do!). Finally, if there were some special syntax that allowed you to enter "help" style comments into formulas, and a button to view them, it might look a bit nicer (although I shouldn't bother with hyperlinks...) ------------ Having dumped all of that, I wonder what the "escher julia" type would look like if the julia it maps onto used some value other than C=0. Mmm... Perhaps I could write a little program to load a picture and then transform it using the Julia mapping function... I'll bet it would look... interesting... if not actually pretty! Yeah, I was on the list "THAT" far back. The problem is (a) finding someone to pay for it, and (b) finding someone to host it. If you solve (a) by having a bunch of people "chip in", then you run into more problems of how to deal with the ownership. (b) is seldom free, and costs more (usually) than paying for the domain name in the first place. Damien M. I believe the 4.669... one is the alpha constant. It's been calculated to many (20+) places, and I don't believe it's rational (although I haven't seen a proof). A direct (but not terribly efficient) way to calculate it is to use the structure of the Mandelbrot set. The main cardioid is centered on 0, that is, 0 is the "c" point such that c=0 (obviously). The large disk just left of the cardioid is centered on -1. That is, c=-1 satisfies c^2 + c = 0. To the left of that disk is another, smaller, centered somewhere about -1.28. That point satisfies (c^2 +c)^2 + c = 0. The sequence of disks getting smaller off to the left have centers that satisfy the appropriate iteration of z^2 + c = 0, where z is the result of the previous iteration. For any group of 3 adjacent centers, form the ratio: (c_current - c_previous)/(c_next - c_current). As the disks get smaller and smaller and you converge on the Feigenbaum point (-1.4something), this ratio will converge on alpha. Another way of deriving the number is to use the bifurcation fractal. If you start fractint, hit 't' and choose bifurcation, a picture appears. It consists of a single line coming in from the left, which soon splits into two, and then four, and so on. The ratio of the distances between sucsessive splits (bifurcations) is Feigenbaum's number. I got the number and description out of "The Beauty of Fractals" by Peitgen and Richter. I met Mitch Feigenbaum at the Nobel Conference in Minnesota in 1991. He was an animated, interesting man, who told hilarious stories at dinner. Mitch, if you read this newsgroup, I really enjoyed our conversation! The dynamics of the bifurcation fractal are *exactly* the dynamics of the Mandelbrot set on the real line. A friend of mine once wrote a nice fractal demo program that plotted the bifurcation fractal dynamics over the M-set image and it was blatantly obvious. Every place where the bifurcation fractal coalesces into a collection of points vertically stacke on top of each other is *exactly* the spot on the M-set images where the buds pinch out to a single point. Its quite cool to see both properly superimposed because it elevates your understanding of both those fractal types. -- Legalize Adulthood! ``Ain't it funny that they all fire the pistol, at the wrong end of the race?''--PDBT legalize@xmission.com Thanks for using Fractint, The Fractals and Fractint Discussion List Post Message: fractint@lists.xmission.com Get Commands: majordomo@lists.xmission.com "help" Administrator: twegner@phoenix.net Unsubscribe: majordomo@lists.xmission.com "unsubscribe fractint" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Jay Hill" Subject: Re: (fractint) Feigenbaum's Number Date: 06 Aug 1999 19:25:47 -0700 Feigenbaum's numbers have been computer to hundreds of digits by K. Jones" Subject: Re: (fractint) Fractal Art 1999 contest Date: 12 Aug 1999 15:47:38 -0500 Joe, - I am thinking about submitting one of my Fractint fractals to the - Fractal Art 1999 contest (see www.fractalus.com). Does anyone know - what they like in a fractal. I'm thinking about making a PHC or PTC - fractal for it. "They"? :-) Keep in mind that it is the visitors to the site that will vote, not a small group of hard-to-please judges. If you're not sure what kind of image to enter, take a look at what did well last year: http://www.fractalus.com/contest98/ A lot of different images proved popular, and the variety of things submitted this year is already fantastic. For entries, we're not picky at all. If you're going to do a PHC or PTC fractal, then I suggest you follow these steps for best image quality: 1. Explore and find an image you like. 2. Use one of the disk-render modes, I suggest 1600x1200 as a minimum. If your video card will do 1600x1200, you can just render to this resolution on your screen. Save the image at this size. 3. Open the image in a good Windows graphics program, like Paint Shop Pro or (if you've got it!) Photoshop. If you don't have a good graphics program, you can download a trial version of Paint Shop Pro from http://www.jasc.com/ 4. Convert the image to 24-bit color. 5. Resize the image to contest size, 640x480. 6. If the image seems very fuzzy, use a slight sharpen effect. Don't overdo this. 7. Save the image as a JPEG at high quality. I've done lots of pictures this way from FractInt, it really makes a difference in image quality, especially with PHC/PTC fractals. Damien M. The status display will replace the menu screen. When it completes, press 'Esc', then 's' to save the image as a gif file.=20 I don't know of a way to run it in the background, though. If you enter "xfractint -disk &", it doesn't start up in another window. A process id will appear on the screen, xfractint will be listed when you do 'ps', but you can't interact with it. If you are running Linux, you might want to take a look at my page about xfractint running in Linux/KDE at: http://www.fastlane.net/~sdboyd/xfractint.html . I have available a binary of xfractint, and I also have some info and some tips about running xfractint in Linux. Good luck, Scott -- Scott D. The two are equivalent, or at least related. Up until recently I had no trouble using Fractint on my Dell Pentium 200mhz machine running Windows95. My 17" monitor was just great for viewing the color cycles. A few months ago I downloaded and installed an updated device driver for my Number Nine Reality 332 Accelerator (Windows Driver Version: Hawkeye for S3d v1.33.05a) with 2 megabytes of DRAM and 64 Megs of RAM. Lately, when I load a GIF and hit "-" or "+" the screen goes crazy! It flips rapidly through a succession of horizontal stripes which makes the image impossible to view. Yet when I hit the space key and stop the cycling, I can see that each moment of the cycle is generating a new image color. My resolution is 1024 x 768 @ 75hz VESA and 65K colors. The only change I am aware of is the updated driver. Does anyone know if the new driver is to blame? Is there a work-around? Should I look elsewhere in my system for an answer? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. I took the liberty of quoting from those messages on my new website, Jacco's Fractal Kitchen. At this website I keep an archive of fractals that I have send to newsgroup alt.binaries.pictures.fractals as 'Fractals Of The Past' and I also add some pages with hints. The page about naming fractals has URL http://www2.crosswinds.net/~jacco/hint2.htm On this page I carefully removed or scrambled all email addresses and ICQ numbers. Yet if you have any objection against your message being quoted, please let me know. By the way, isn't the Fractint Mailing List having its second birthday of these days? Bye! What's going on is that your messages are being delivered through a server (mail.netpath.net) which is misconfigured as an open relay and which, if spammers discover it, can be used by any spammer anywhere to spam absolutely anyone on the net. For this reason, fractalus.com's mail server does not accept mail from open relays. Complain to NetPath's sysadmin and get them to fix their problems. (There is absolutely no excuse for an open relay in today's Internet, and the ORBS site, www.orbs.org, does have tips on securing one's server. In the case of NetPath, it looks like they have a modern mail server program but with an old buggy config file. Rebuilding their config file for the current version of sendmail and submitting their site to ORBS as fixed should permanently fix the problem.) This is not some personal vendetta directed against you, Tom--just against people setting up servers incorrectly or deliberately looking the other way and allowing spam to continue. As a *temporary* fix, I've lifted the block for mail.netpath.net for my server only. Anyone else using the ORBS database to block spam will still block your mail. Damien M.
