From: Tony Reed Subject: (hats) Tribute Album- Safety Dance Date: 01 Jun 2000 00:06:29 -0700 I have put a very rough version of the Safety Dance on my site for those curious about the progress of any of the songs. It is in Realaudio format, but my provider doesn't support streaming media yet so you'll have to wait for it to download. I have a lot of plans for this song. Right now it is similar to the original, but I intend to mess with it a lot more. I intend to revamp the drums and change a few of the other parts. For now, however, enjoy the song as it is. As I said before, I've got a few changes in store for the song. I'll keep you posted. If anyone else wants to post their cover on my site, let me know and we'll arrange it. I'm very excited about this and, while I don't necessarily want to take charge of this project, I would be happy to help anyone who needs it in getting their song finished. If I can get a couple more songs, I'll dedicate a page to the tribute album. Maybe Claude or a member from Flat Stanley could aquire me an MP3 or Realaudio file, or send me a CDR of the song and I'll put it on my site in Realaudio form. Maybe we can really get the ball rolling if everyone can see the progress. If someone needs to aquire software to do their recording, I have an older copy of Cakewalk that I don't need since I've upgraded. I have other software as well. Email me privately If you are interested in anything. Once again, thanks everyone for the kind words. I'll keep working on it. It is only to be used by members of this mailing list. the username and password is mwhcovers You can log on there now and download the only song we have on there now. It is Flat Stanley doing his wonderful version of "Where do the boys go". I am not in charge of this project and do not want to be in charge. I am just providing a place we can all use. I was thinking about even adding a forum so people can leave feedback about the songs but I figured we can just use this mailing list to give feedback. If the forum sounds like a good idea, please let me know. I sent an e-mail to Stefan telling him I was going to do this and he seemed ok with the idea as long as its only along members of this mailing list. Please do not go posting this information on other parts of the internet. This web site is only to be used by members of this MWH mailing list. Stefan said this to me "if it's good enough to commercialize, you'll need proper authorization from our publishers as well as ourselves, but if it's just for fun, it could be ok." I figure we can just post the files to the web site for now because it is "just for fun" and later if we get enough songs we can look at the possibility of creating a "Real CD" and going through the "proper authorization" to create such a cd, until then I say we just have fun and let each other share our versions of Men without Hats songs. The cool thing about doing it this way is you can upload your song even if its not done or change it at any time you wish. Its time we finally got this MWH mailing list going again :) If I am out of line with this whole thing somebody tell me and I can take this web page down. -Richard # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info hats" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email hats@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Men Without Hats discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?hats ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Tony Reed Subject: (hats) New Streaming Safety Dance Date: 12 Jun 2000 20:39:59 -0700 The realaudio files of "The Safety Dance are now in Streaming Realaudio for those of you who didn't feel like waiting for the download process (who could blame you). Well, I guess I never shared this before, with anyone, so I never really examined the reasons until now. This is gonna be a long one because the reasons are many, but here goes... I was nine or ten when the Safety Dance became popular, I liked it immediately. My family was poor so we couldn't afford to buy music very often. When we did, we usually bought a compilation album by K-Tel since they were significantly cheaper and contained only hits. I can't tell you how many times I held the cassette of ROY in my hands just wishing I could take it home (I had to get the cassette. The album had fewer songs and CDs hadn't even entered my consciousness). I saved up half of my allowance when ever It was possible (My allowance was 50 cents a week). It was almost a year before I was able to buy the album. In that time I never got tired of the Safety Dance ( I actually had gotten a copy of the song on a K-Tel album called "Street Beat", but I wanted the Extended Dance version). When I first bought the album I was so afraid that I had wasted money on an album that only had one good song on it that I only listened to The Extended Safety Dance for the first week. As time progressed I heard the rest of the album and I remember how happy I was that it was better than I expected. I remember thinking how fortunate it was that there were songs on the album that were better than the Safety Dance. It was then I discovered something else. MWH mentioned my name in their songs. Well you can imagine how profoundly this would endear a ten-year-old to a band. So I listened to the tape over and over and over.... I don't know how commonplace MWH was in Canada, but FOTE3 was never even promoted in CA, so I never knew it was around, but then, one night in 84-85 I was up late watching HBO when a movie called "Blue Line" came on. A party scene began with the sound of three kick drums and then a song began with a female voice speaking in french. I liked the sound of the song so much I wasn't even paying attention to the movie (Which was particularly bad). Then I heard a very familiar voice singing about walking around in circles. At that point I had to check the record stores for a new MWH album. It was almost two years before I finally found it, but this time I was able to buy it immediately. When I got it home, once again I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the entire album was good. And yes, they mention my name again. Another year passed... I had discovered New Order and decided I wanted to write music in the vain of "Bizarre Love Triangle" and "Blue Monday". The discovery of New order lead to the discovery of other electronic bands like Depeche Mode and Erasure. One night, while on the bus to a wrestling meet, a teammate let me borrow his Walkman so I could hear this new song he had taped off of the radio. I heard the synthetic bells and thought, "Well, this is neat". The song kicked in and the vocals began. I didn't recognize the almost whispered vocals but I immediately fell in love with the song. I asked my friend, "Who does this song?" He told me he thought it was "Echo and the Bunnymen." I went to the store to buy the new Echo and the Bunnymen tape (Still couldn't get CDs yet). As I was in line to pay for the tape, I noticed in the M section that there was a new MWH tape. I immediately put the Echo tape back and got back in line to buy the MWH tape. When I got it home, I was completely surprised to find that the song I went to the store to buy in the first place wasn't even an Echo song. It was a MWH song. It was Pop Goes the World. I didn't like the album as much as FOTE3, but they did mention my name again. That's when I realized that Men Without Hats were an electronic band, too. I also began to realize that all my old favorite bands were electronic. From then on it was diligence that ensured that I got the new MWH CDs. I always checked the MWH section in the stores. I bought 21st Century the day it came out. By then I was importing music from everywhere and doing my own music so, while I liked the album, I thought it could have been done better with a good producer. Nobody around me seemed to share my love of the Hats so I just listened in my room and was happy all the same. I enjoyed Sideways, especially "I am the Walrus", but it was my least favorite of the albums. Before you think it, I didn't dislike it because of the guitars. I didn't mind that at all. What I disliked was the abuse of old blues riffs. As if it wasn't bad enough I had people criticizing my own music because it was electronic and then showing me their tired, overdone, blues-oriented rock and telling me that it was superior because it was an homage to the roots of rock. You have to take a lot of crap from other musicians when you do electronic music, but this strengthened my will and I continued, but I did learn to play guitar and occasionally add some to my songs (i.e.: As I Pray - on my music site) Four years ago, I discovered that the music of MWH is still resounding through the net. I finally got a copy of all the videos as well as the FOTE EP and the Freeways single. I was even able to get copies of old unreleased songs which I still enjoy today. The only song I don't have a copy of is "The Winnebago Song" To answer the question, finally, I am a MWH person because their music has been like another family member to me. Their music has echoed my life. I am proud to have the chance to pay homage. And that's what my version of the safety dance is. An honest tribute to the most influential band in my life. > On WinAmp the mp3 version of your cover was so much crisper than the > original way. My friend John and I spent about 25 minutes with it next to another favorite band of mine's logo, and discovered small discrepancies, but not too many. I am not an expert of copyright laws but if you do not get your logo registered or even have the trademark other people may have the right to use it. Also the story is that Ivan got the logo from a construction site that had a green circle around it and then just put the slash on it to created the MWH logo. Someone else created that logo in the first place and Ivan just modified it. There is also another copyright law that if you modify a picture or logo by a certian ammount its ok to use. Date: 27 Jun 2000 02:20:53 -0700 I would like to contribute to the cover CD as well. My problem is I am not very musically inclined. I can mimic fairly...but I'm not that great. Is there someone out there willing to team up with me on doing a cover of "Things in my Life"? Along this same line of reasoning, I want to start a new thread into the list. Your memory meets MWH song. e.g.... Things in My Life. It's my favorite Hats song. However, it also means a great deal to me. The lyrics seem to "fit" my life. Just about everyone has a song like this. Open up - explain why. In TiML, Ivan sings about how there are things he never remember, things he will never forget. This line is one of those "well, duh!" type lines, but it means something. There are always things about the love of my [short] life that I will remember...some good/bad times...but there are some things I never can conjure up and remember. And I regret that. I want to remember everything about her. There are things I will cherish forever (my time with her) And there are things I will alwyas regret (I cheated on her once...and still hate myself for it.). I will also always remember another girl I dated...and I regret putting the amount of trust I did in her. But I will always cherish my experience with that girl. I've never been to Scotland, but I wonder if I'll ever fall in love again. Usually when I am alone on those grizzly Sundays, I think abotu that. I have another girlfriend...but will I ever love a girl again liek I did the first one? Who knows. I remember a line in a Star Trek TNG episode "...you'll never love another quite the same again [like your first love]". Makes me wonder. And we can never remember the things we always forget...the good things when things go south. Ever notice that? Maybe it's just me. Whenever things went bad with that love of mine, I always saw ALL the bad things in her. Now I can barely see any of them. And no matter how many mementos I have, or how many things I hear about her, I can't get her out of my mind, and I can't stop loving her to the point of anguish. I dunno. I am a strong believer in the act of venting. We're not really big strangers to each other, but we're also not a part of some big clic. Open up - let lose. Show your Hats pride -=) Or maybe I'm just foolish...I tend to like bombs, even though sometimes they tend to scare me half to death.
