From: The Winter Queen Subject: (hats) Intro Date: 13 Jun 2001 18:31:07 -0400 (EDT) Gretting to the list! I've just joined, and I thought I'd post my intro and get that out of the way! My name is Nancy, I'm 28, and I live in Brooklyn, NY with my husband Ron and 4 very spoiled cats. We are both computer geeks(Linux/Unix/coder geeks), and we've both been laid off recently. It looks like Ron may have found another job, but I'm still looking. Until I find one I'm working as a bartender at La Nouvelle Justine, a "fetish theme cafe" in the E.Village. It's a bit touristy, but a lot of fun! If anyone is in NYC on a tuesday night, feel free to drop in and say hello. :-) When not in front of the computer, we both sometimes DJ at clubs around the NYC area, play in a punk/industrial band called "Dorothy Does Drugs", obsess over Triumph motorcycles and go dancing as often as we can. I joined this list for a few reason, one I like Men W/O Hats (but I guess that goes w/o saying), and because I was watching some old videos last night while at work (Tuesday is 80s/new wave night) and a bunch of got to talking about some of the things in the videos, and we had a lot of questions that no one at the bar could answer about them. And seeing as how I have no day job at the moment, and since I'm stuck inside with a sinus infection, I thought I'd attempt to get some answers. Before I start pestering the list with a bunch of questions that you've heard a million times before I will be reading through the list archives and FAQs. If I can't find what I need there, I will be asking! ******************************************* "Computer games don't affect kids, I mean if Pacman affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive music." Welcome to the Men Without Hats discussion forum. (a.k.a. Hats Listing) :) It's kinda cool to see new enthusiastic MWH fans appear on our little group every once in a while. Although, these days things are kind of, well, DEAD around here! 3 years ago, it used to be a thriving and bustling metropolis with many varied opinions being expressed at a rate of up to 10 posts per day! But a few heated arguments (centred around a possible "private Ivan show") kind of increased the air pollution of our lovely town. People can take things too seriously sometimes. But that's ancient history! Lately, even though it's a bit of a ghost town (excuse me, tumble weed rolling by) there are a few interesting things going on... For example a new MWH album is expected within a couple months or so! (can't get more exciting than that really) Also, we have a cover project in the works where several of us here in the list have attempted to put new spins on some of the classics. Check out a few examples at: http://www.holdman.com/mwhcovers/archive/ As for myself, my name is Steve (aka Senz), I'm a 36 year old electronics engineer who wore green spiked hair in the 80's but prefers squeaky bald nowadays. I heard Safety Dance in 1982 or thereabouts, met Ivan in 1991, and find his best albums were Rhythm of Youth and Pop Goes The World. Oh, and I'm about to become a dad in about two weeks! :) Other than that, hope your stay here is an enjoyable one! Um, don't forget to mention the crass, rude manner in which Stefan "handled" the situation with Richard. That's what caused me to not care anymore. The fact that that happened at almost the exact same time that Private Ivan fell through was certainly a double-whammy. This list was *happening* prior to those non-events. Don't forget they were ripped off by a certain record company, spent years battling for the rights to there own songs, abandoned by that company etc. Then when they finally have control, the internet pops up and voila... napster! Then they find out there's a specific group of fans who are churning out up to 10 different bootlegs which were starting to pop up on ebay IIRC. Yeah, I think I'd have a bad hair day in there somewhere, myself! But your right, the resulting "debate" created a double whammy. As for not caring, I have a sense that once everyone on this list had all those bootlegs and videos, their thirst for MWH was quenched! Which leads me to wonder how many new fans have joined since that would kill (or at least maim) for copies of those. I just got Freur's "Doot Doot" from CDNow in the mail yesterday. I haven't listened to it all the way through, yet... I wouldn't classify it as synth-pop -- they use guitar and organ quite a bit -- but there are a few songs (so far) that are synth-ish. "Matters of the Heart" (track 6) reminded me of Erasure's "You Surround Me" from the "Wild!" CD. Other than that, the Freur CD isn't what I was expecting it to be. I was expecting it to be more synth-pop. I had heard someone either on this list or another band mailing list I'm on recommend it, so I thought I would try it. BTW, this CD is a reissue from none other than Carl Caprioglio (are you still here, Carl?). I don't know if this link will work for you, but CDNow has some samples on-line: http://www.cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=1087809667/pagename=/RP/CDN/FIND/album.html/artistid=FREUR/itemid=12385 Just wanted to pass this along... This explanation strikes me as one that avoids stepping on toes, and is well suited to an event surrounding a self proclaimed 'pacifist, feminist, and vegetarian'. (Though that description may or may not be dated by now...) Thank you Senz. I give your post 3 thumbs up. It strikes me as interesting that there's so much tragedy surrounding Ivan appearances in the past few years. I recall he cancelled the latter part of promoting his solo album 'The Spell', there's this private gig problem, and worst of all was when he played Lansdowne park in Ottawa in the summer of '97. A number of acts were playing, starting at 7:30 pm and going until midnight. I got there at 8, expecting Ivan to be one of the big headliners, only to be informed that his **20 MINUTE** set was already over. (20 minutes! What kind of crap lack of appreciation for a great musical talent is that!?!?) Even _worse_, I it was followed by a 1 hour set of C&C Music factory, who didn't even have instruments with them. Just a dat machine playing the songs. The show ranged from 1-4 people on stage singing and/or rapping and/or dancing to the music, generally in front of the curtain. It was like watching a high school air band show. :P Some of the dancing wasn't that bad, but it had all of the charm of watching Milli Vanilli. Okay, maybe that last part wasn't the greatest tragedy for the world at large, but I was so close to seeing Ivan and I missed it. And I had to pay to see these other crap acts. Except for this other band Blessed Union of Souls. They were pretty good, at least. Still, I'm looking forward to seeing some major MWH performances once the new album is out. I hope they haven't completely lost the guitar sounds of Sideways... it was a bold musical move, and I think it paid off artistically. THey are very influnced by all the 80's bands I love. http://www.jrocker.com/bucktick/ -Nancy ******************************************* "Computer games don't affect kids, I mean if Pacman affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive music." # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info hats" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email hats@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Men Without Hats discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?hats ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: M.J.Innes@open.ac.uk Subject: (hats) RE: "Good-But-Obscure" Synthpop Date: 28 Jun 2001 12:13:38 +0100 Just realised I should have mentioned a few things myself, which maybe people will go for. Hope this is not considered too off topic? mp3s available from all links... Freezepop http://www.freezepop.net/ - very squeaky, extremely catchy, early 80s-influenced kitschy synth-pop from Boston, all done on a tiny little hand-held sequencer. I Am Robot And Proud http://bloop.org/robot/ - wonderfully atmospheric-but-funky instrumental pop, by a one man band from Toronto. Can't think of anything this is similar to, but it's absolutely fantastic. The Tic Tok Men http://www.ampcast.com/search/band.php?id=4878 - I think they're from LA. If you're missing those old skool Kraftwerk beats, definitely worth a try. Komputer, without the sense of humour. Printed Circuit http://www.printed-circuit.net/ - one girl from Leeds using her computer to make funky loops and catchy electropop. Baxendale http://www.musicforgirls.co.uk/ - indiepop Pet Shop Boys is an obvious way to describe them. From London. Great songs, catchy as hell and funny too. Twitch and With Sympathy are examples of good and bad (respectively) synthpop. some other bands that should be noted are: Neuroactive (Finland -- on 'a different drum' records) The Nine (UK -- 'ADD' records) Cosmicity (UK? -- 'ADD' records) Iris (Utah -- 'ADD' records) Heck, you wouldn't be in a bad state to check out most of the stuff that comes out on 'a different drum' records if you are looking for really good modern synthpop. ae. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info hats" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email hats@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Men Without Hats discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?hats ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Steve Jackson" Subject: Re: (hats) Re: "Good-But-Obscure" Synthpop Date: 28 Jun 2001 09:58:46 -0400 ---- Alex wrote: > > > Ministry > please do note (however) that more recent ministry is not even _close_ > to synthpop. "The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste" is pretty good, too, but is more industrial than synth. Boytronic ("The Working Model", "The Continental", "Love For Sale"; avoid the more recent stuff, including the remix/best of album which is pure crap) Berlin ("Pleasure Victim"; the rest is rather non-MWH-ish) Alphaville (Obscure only nowadays: who knows that they are still putting out stuff on a _very_ regular basis? A few years ago I saw a new album (I think called something like Prostitute) but it was such a hefty price (no pun intended). # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info hats" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email hats@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Men Without Hats discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?hats ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Thomas Bieler Subject: Alphaville (was: Re: (hats) MWH cover) Date: 29 Jun 2001 12:53:31 +0200 (CEST) On Thu, 28 Jun 2001, Daniele Rossi wrote: > > Alphaville (Obscure only nowadays: who knows that they are still putting > > out stuff on a _very_ regular basis? I was asking "Who knows that ...?", not "Who knows if ...?". ;-) Just trying to justify calling them 'obscure'. After 'Prostitute', came 'Salvation', then an 8-CD Box with old and new and unreleased stuff, then a live CD. Now thy're putting out a new song each month for download. There is a continuos strem of new av music.
