Wow! Where did you find that out? When I hear about something like this I cant help but wonder; "Whats it gonna be like?". Do any among us dare to speculate aloud? "I" sayeth me! And so here go I... Let us analyse the situation. Rumors have abounded about academia in the art of film. Five years beyond Sideways is certainly enough for our hero to have obtained that piece of paper. If so, why a new album but not a new film? I think the answer lies in his last work of art more than anything. Most of us realize that Sideways was an attempt at breaking out of a pigeon hole. There may have been a little something to prove to his critics as well, no? My personal belief is that the "art" took a bit of a back seat to these intentions. Now with new ideas gleaned and fostered by his scholastic experience he returns. Finding himself free of those "Synth" shackles and having nothing to prove, (ie "I can play guitar too, see!") Ivan discovers he has more to say... My prediction, then, is for an alternative sort of thing. Perhaps with elements of Smashing Pumpkins and They Might Be Giants. Guitar? Most definately! But at a more controlled level. Synth? perhaps a little, but not not noticably. Traditional instruments, violins, piano? Sure! Not so traditional ones like an accordian, a gazoo and a soccer whistle? Why not! But most important, IT WILL INCLUDE ART!!! On the other hand maybe he's just trying to drum up cash to fund a film project! Oh well, c'est la vie. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info hats" in the message. # Postings must go to hats@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Kevin Gamble Subject: (hats) www.cdnow.com -Reply Date: 04 Nov 1996 09:15:47 -0600 >>I browsed the online record store, CDNOW, and saw that they are selling "Rhythm of Youth"! Funny about the track listing, though--I have a tape copy I bought a year or so ago, and the track listing is normal, so I wonder if the CDNow listing is a mistake. Taking today's popular music charts (that is Europe's), I'm gonna contradict myself here and say maybe he'll be a cross between "RoY" meets Celine Dion, Roch Voisine, and a few guitar riffs. An excerpt from http://web.consulan.com/swing/article1.htm: Forming a Django Reinhard tribute band might appear like an odd career choice for a musician. ... Mike King ...says the decision to found a group dedicated to the music of the late, great Paris-based Bypsy jazz guitarist was the result of a vision he had five years ago at a fruitstand in rural British Columbia. ... There are also plans to record a live album, which will be released on Mainstream Records, the brand-new label founded by Men Without Hats singer Ivan Doroschuk. The head Hat has also just signed on as Swing Dynamique's manager. ... About 95 per cent of the Swing Dynamique material is Reinhardt originals, though they currently do one tango tune and end the sets with a swing-flavoured medley of the Jimi Hendrix classics, Third Stone from the Sun and Purple Haze. Cool! Yes, its true. My birthday is November 12. I've been so busy, I even forgot about it a couple of days ago. I'm still spending about 2 1/2 hours a day (or every other day) making videos. By the way, Carl's your videos are finished. I've already started #20-#30 last week. I'm actually on about #25 now. I should have ALL of these mailed by next weekend. Go ahead and send me $10 if you are #20-#30. Oh yeah, the master tapes are still "as I received them". I will let you all know if I see any wear on them. I do realize that this is slow, slow, slow. I am basically working from midnight to 9 am every night at my company, and then I work for the hats fans another couple of hours every morning until I hit my bed. Don't get me wrong, I love doing this! I just want to explain why I can't do 3 tapes a day or something like that. My boss has been hassling me over why I've got the lowest overtime ranking in the department. Little does he know, I'm looking for another job (this takes more time still). I have some good news! I have some more hats footage to tape for everyone. I have been slowly accumulating more stuff during the process of making these videos. All the better for all of you! Now I can make some audio cassettes as well. I will tell everyone 1/2 of what I have in mind. The other half, you will find out in time. Because Mike is in between jobs at the moment, I may be able to record some cassettes for some people, later. I won't agree to this until I've finished everyone's video, everyone. Here it is: 1. I've got a near CD quality DAT copy of Freeways (euromix) and Antarctica 1980. This is off of a sealed Freeways LP I picked up in Canada around 1991. Thinking ahead, I put it on digital tape on the very first play, therefore- CD quality, much better than the Gre. HAt. CD. I also have the Rhythm of Youth CD, w/ other freeways tracks + freeways casstte w/ other versions. >-I am in a position to make a Freeways cassette for people who want one<- This is side 1 or the cassette. 2. Someone has sent me a near perfect copy of Rhythm of Youth concert from a CFNY radio show. He sent me his original cassette and I put it directly to digital tape as well. Safety Dance, I Like, WDTBG, Ideas for Walls, The Great Ones Remember, Messiahs Die Young, Freeways, Security, I Got the Message, Moderne Dancing, Things in my Life. This is Side 2 of the cassette. This is most of Mike's rare and live CDs anyway. Although I don't have a CD writer, I can make some killer metal cassettes copies to hold us all until Mikey comes through. I was going to offer to tape ROY and FOLK CDs, but thanks to Carl, these are soon available! Yeah! (Hey Carl, any chance of a Freeways mini CD release?) The coolest thing just happened. A friend from high school whom I haven't spoken to in years called me up on the phone. He asked me if I knew why he was calling. When I replied that I didn't, he reminded me that today is Men Without Hats Day. I couldn't help but laugh out loud. Tom and I were big MWH fans back in the days of Rhythm Of Youth, and we decided (along with another friend and fan, Dave) that November 14th should be MWH Day, in honor of the cute lyric from "Things In My Life". The only custom for MWH Day was to listen to the first album, of course. To this day (what, a dozen years later?) I think I have only forgotten once. Until this year, when it completely slipped my mind. Big thanks to Tom for reminding me. Note: The Tom mentioned is not the famous listmember, though when I told him I was on a MWH list, he laughed and thought about joining up (we'll see). He was also really pleased to see the MWH homepages, etc., on the web. (It had just never occurred to him to look.) Anyway, to all of you -- Happy Men Without Hats Day! --Swahili Steve n.p. Are you kidding me? What else? "Was it here, or yesterday...?" Date: 21 Nov 1996 13:33:08 -0400 Greetings, fellow Hatters! Apologies up front for the long post, but = I think you'll like it... I've been on this list for a year or so and have remained fairly = quiet with regards to all of the talk about the Men Without Hats = "bootleg" CDs that Mike Best was planning. As a fan myself, I had = contacted Mike just before he lost his job about doing some graphic = design work for the CDs. Well, recently I acquired a 4x CD burner for my home video business = and, with the help of Tom Norman, have compiled 3 CDs of rare = material. Basically, we have picked up where Mike left off. The best = news is that not only have we "compiled" this material, but I have = already mastered them and burned CDs for myself and Tom! Yes, the = wait is over...! Before I continue, I must stress to everyone that I am decidedly = ANTI-BOOTLEG in all regards. I am a low-budget film director and in = my business, bootlegging is rampant and costs myself and my peers = untold amounts of money each year. That said, I can happily announce = to you that I have not put the hard work and time into mastering = these CDs to make a profit. Like Tom with his video compilation, I = have done this out of my love for Men Without Hats and because no one = else is making this material available. The CDs I am about to offer = are NOT FOR SALE OR PROFIT. Please do not contact me about purchasing = these in any sort of quantity for resale, etc. In fairness to Carl from Oglio I have not collected or used any of = his material. While I have masters for a 2-on-1 RHYTHM/FOLK CD at my = disposal, I will NOT be offering this material since the forthcoming = release can easily be imported to the U.S. (I would rather have the = original in nice full-color packaging, myself...) So...what DO I have, you ask? 1. FREEWAYS This is basically a CD version of the Canadian FREEWAYS cassette with = some bonus material to pad out the 74 mins. Tom Norman compiled each = cut from the best sources available to him. For instance, "Modern(e) = Dancing," "Utter Space" and "Security (Everybody Feels Better With)" = are taken from his rare Statik RHYTHM OF YOUTH CD. The 1980 version = of "Antarctica" and "Freeways (Euromix)" are from virgin vinyl = (believe me, you can't tell). Three other mixes of "Freeways" are = from his original cassette. The other tracks are dance/extended mixes = of "Pop Goes The World" and "Moonbeam" (3 of each). 2. RHYTHM OF YOUTH LIVE 1983 11 tracks taken from MWH's 1983 tour... The Safety Dance I Like Where Do The Boys Go? Ideas For Walls The Great Ones Remember Messiahs Die Young Freeways Security (Everybody Feels Better With) I Got The Message Modern(e) Dancing Things In My Life 3. FREEWAYS LIVE 1985 14 tracks recorded live in 1985 at "Le Spectrum" Concert Montreal... Heaven I Know Their Name Antarctica Modern(e) Dancing I Sing Last/Not For Tears Jenny Wore Black Freeways Security (Everybody Feels Better With) Ban The Game I Like Editions Of You The Safety Dance I Got The Message Where Do The Boys Go? This material was all taken from DAT into my Power Mac, where the = heads and tails were trimmed and/or faded and the levels normalized = for maximum volume without peaking. I have gone to the liberty of = creating inserts/tray liners for the CDs, all color-coded and = containing complete track lists and times. (The FREEWAYS CD also = includes all of the liner notes from Tom's cassette.) So there you have it. I'm not sure how to go about offering these. I = had at first considered having all of you send me blank CD-Rs + = postage stamps so that no money exchanged hands, but the two people I = have chatted with via e-mail about this proposal find it inconvenient = and potentially costly. So, I will work it this way: Blank CD-Rs currently cost me $7.50 ea. With a label and colored = paper for the inserts, you've got approx. another 50=A2. So the CDs = will be $8 ea. plus a flat $3 for return Priority Mail to you. I = would prefer to do them in sets (all 3 CDs at one time), which works = out to be $27 per set with postage. I will be limiting them to 50 = sets a'la Tom's tape...so first come, first served. If you are interested in acquiring these CDs, e-mail privately and = we'll make the arrangements. Finally, if anyone knows how to get in touch with Ivan and Co., I = would happily and at my own expense send a set of CDs to them. It's = my hope that they will appreciate the work and the fact that their = fans are still keeping this music alive even if greedy corporate = types won't (no, I do not refer to Carl but whoever killed the U.S. = release of the 2-on-1 CD). We're up to 34 of the aforementioned 3-CD set as of this writing. I'm going to start burning CDs tomorrow morning...even with a quad-speed burner this is going to take awhile! But, fear not...I'll get to everyone as the orders come in. Please make sure to include your address when you send in your order... A second connection to Ivan has also surfaced, so there's a good chance that The Man Without A Hat will join us all in partaking of this "made by fans for fans" collection. Finally, I have it on good authority that some never-before-released MWH material will be coming my way soon. So, there may yet be another CD to add to this collection. Those of you in line, they're well worth the wait. Excellant sound quality (I am fairly easy to please, but these pass my full-volume headphones test without sign of cassette warble), great packaging! I was pleasantly surprised to see the labeling on the cd itself. Obviously a labor of love! And I finally got to hear a live version of one of my favorite songs: Ideas for Walls. I have only one (bizarre) request. For some strange reason ever since the days of Folk 3 I have had a desire to see the Hats logo on a purple background. If there are any more fan-generated releases forthcoming, please consider a purple cover. (The colors used were, of course, good choices. Especially Freeways.)
