That synth has a quality about it that make the songs sound so....synth poppy...And Men Without Hats wrote great synthpop on the first two albums. The next two albums used alot of digital stuff and sampled voices...then came the grunge on the last one. As someone who prefers the old analog sound over digital or even guitar, I feel that the first two albums are best just because of the instruments they used. The sound is so unique and brash and bubbly. But when you think about it, the songs really remained quite the same from album to album but the band used different instruments to songwrite with. But I agree with you...notice how quiet the list got once everyone received the video and 3CD set? Makes me wonder what will happen too once the 2-fer is out. That synth sound sure feels nice on the ears! But its more than just the fact that its synth. These albums feel like they were created by a playful and enthusiastic Ivan. (ie. they are very clever albums). You're right though, there are two kinds of synth but I think its not quite "analog vs sampler". For example, I easily created that cheezy synth on my Roland S-10 by looping single pulses of just about any sample. This created a square wave which is in fact the basis of those analog synths. The first 2 or 3 albums of MWH used these simpler waveforms while PGTW used more complex waveforms. Acoustic instruments have infinitely complex waveforms (which, of coarse, end up being sampled waveforms when on a CD). My heart has always been with that wonderful "cheezy" synth and if it came right down to a decision between the first 3 MWH albums and PGTW I'd have to go with the first 3 "cheezy" ones. But PGTW was more adventurous, had a great variety of sounds (that's an understatement!) and put together with meticulous attention to detail and the art of music. > ...notice how quiet the list got once everyone > received the video and 3CD set? Makes me wonder what will happen too once > the 2-fer is out. I noticed this too! I'll admit, when I got the video I had the sense of being content. (Like my long thirst for MWH and been quenched.) The only real talk thats gone on since is by those who were not able to get the 3CD set asking how they could now get it - my point being - there is a certain amount of hype about MWH on this list centered around the fact that most of their stuff is still unavailable to the masses on CD. Once everything is available, will there be the same volume of discussion? I kind of doubt it. There is little talk about their first two albums as is and they are readily available on vinyl/cassette. I don't think the release of those two albums is going to stir up too much talk. In fact, a lot of people may end up leaving the list shortly afterwards once they've gotten "all" of the MWH stuff ever available. That's kind of why the missing demos is good to have missing. There's always something more that you don't have... As much as I liked the MWH video collection, I had only seen one of the videos before (Safety Dance) and was very anxious to see the whole thing. There was a certain completeness after having watched the whole video but there was also a certain feeling of disappointment...a feeling of - man they were pretty cheesy weren't they - or, hmmm, they were great, but their videos were not "that" great...or, Is that it? Is this what I've been waiting for for all of these years? My bubble sort of burst I guess. Just my personal feelings - I still like the first two albums more than any other and they are two of my all-time-favorite synthpop albums so I'm sure once they are available I'll be here talking about them... The protagonist is definately not too confident in what he's saying. I wonder if the phrase "banging your head against a wall" has anything to do with this song? If this line of reasoning is correct then why does Ivan want us to think about this? Really?, Where Do the Boys Go? is my favourite of the whole bunch. I love everything about it, from the opening bit with the text printed on the screen and the blinking triangle cursor, to the giant orange ball, to the weird camera attachment to Ivan, to the guy running around in circles with his hand over his ear at the start, to the herd of bonhommes. I should say more about that last bit. It's actually a bit scary in a surreal way, all these bonhommes smiling and waving on the exterior, but slowly circling round the guy, closing in, closing in, so many of them, smiling and waving, seemingly with good intentions but surrounding the guy and bringing him down. Also it's great at the end after one of the "WDTBG"'s when Ivan gives this great big nodding smile. And yes great music on that one. Actually I had managed to overlook WDTBG somehow all that time I had Folk..III on vinyl.. it wasn't until the Collection CD that I got hooked on it. It is pretty catchy, you have to admit. I made an arrangement (well, more like.. transcription? :) ) of it for the a capella group I sing with here at the university, and they all love it. I realize now that I should have done "I Know Their Name" instead - that song has always meant a lot more to me, but it's too similar to WDTBG to do both now. I also love the Pop Goes the World video - it has an almost Japanese cheesiness to it. With all of Ivan's silly grins and facial expressions, and the gratuitous words appearing on the screen to indicate the actions going on ('pop!', 'skrang', and my favourite.. when Ivan looks puzzled by the bubbles floating around at the beginning and a little ? appears next to his head).. and have you ever actually looked at the "baby's" hands? What a riot! And of course "Jenny" with the bass, just rocking it back and forth and looking pretty. We always joke that when near the end she gets put up on the pedestal by Ivan, that it was really the case that Ivan was showing the model where to go ("ok now come stand over here for a while"), because all she knew how to do was rock the bass back and forth.. I guess Moonbeam is good too, for many of the same reasons as PGTW (I think it's a little unnecessary that the moonbeam illuminates his groin in a couple of those shots though, and the zoom-ins on "Jenny"'s crotch), but it gets big-time points taken off for the annoying remix that accompanies it. I like when he jumps onto the moonbeam and starts climbing, but in the next shot he's back at the same place. Another "person of estrogen" checking in. There are a couple of us, but just like in school, it's mostly guys that pipe up. Welcome aboard! Hi Everyone!! Ohmigosh! I have a spare 20 seconds! What a concept. I better type fast. CDs: Great, love them!! Am making several people at work jealous by listening to them on my computer - the 90s version of whistle while you work, I guess. I *LOVE* Freeways - perfectly captures the mood of driving alone at night (particularly when Cocoa and I drove to a dog show in a tornado!). Video: Cheezy? Of course - that's why we love 'em. It was great to see the videos I'd never seen before - I only had SD and IL on video before. Moonbeam is hysterical! *Sigh* Was Ivan really that young? Then how young was I? The live show was great, too. I had seen them live (live live, not live on video) waaaaay back on the ROY tour (boy, do I feel old! who was it that was 7 when PGTW came out? Thanks, kiddo!), and they really put on a super show. Maybe this will stir things up: What song, by any group or artist, would you like to hear Ivan et al. cover? MWH did a bang-up job with SOS, I think, but I wasn't that crazy about I am the Walrus (I didn't like it when the Beatles did it, either, though). My fantasy album would have Ivan covering ... I'm a Believer by the Monkees. But Peggy Sue by Buddy Holly would be fun, too. That would give Ivan a better chance to do his yip-thing. ;-) CUL8R! ;-) Laura PS to MB and SW - saw Shopping with you-know-who. My, what a potty-mouth! More later... And the only male fan I knew - my brother - ditched the entire techno scene soon after he bought "Rhythm Of Youth" because someone told him it was all too "gay". (When I questioned him about buying the album and what that meant about his sexuality, he just told me to "SHUT UP!". Touché.) I've pretty much been a lone wolf for the last 14 years when it came to liking MWH. Throughout my long and tortured life, my choice in music has been the biggest target exploited by people looking to rag on me. Please tell me if anything like this has ever happened to you. Right when I got the Oglio Records "Collection", the woman I was living with at the time (note that I said "at the time") had invited her sister to stay with us for a few days. I was listening to the CD while they were cooking, and the sister called out, "What is THAT?" And my girlfriend replied, "It's MEN WITHOUT HATS. Isn't it CRAP? HAHAHAHA!" And so they both proceeded to berate me and the Hats for a good fifteen minutes. Let me tell you, I was really hurt. From her obnoxious egotistical trendy sister, I expected it... but from someone I was in love with?!?!? POW. Caught me right in the gut. So, to come back to my point before I have people all over the world crying and wiping their eyes, I think MWH is a very special band, one of those rare groups that couldn't and wouldn't be categorized and nailed down into a general musical "style". What they were trying to do went over the general music publics' collective heads... but there were some that actually got it, that felt the call and got hooked. I'm one, Hillary's one, Tom is one, J.R. is one... everyone reading these words is a member of a very exclusive club. This mailing list has proven to me that I'm not *completely* alone in the world. Apart from my friends and my cats, the music that moves me is the most important thing in my life. It keeps me going when there doesn't seem to be any hope, or any point in continuing. Knowing that somewhere out there Hillary is listening to "Walk On Water" and feeling that same sense of... of whatever it is Ivan put into his music (I don't know what it is, but it sure as hell feels good!)... knowing that I'm not the only one that feels that way about MWH is comforting. It's reassuring, in its own way. I thank everyone who is on this list, and others we have yet to meet, for helping keep MWH from disappearing forever. With the 2-on-1 about to be released, and rumors of a brand-new album from Ivan floating around, I'd say our wearing out of tapes and LPs, and hopes for a return haven't been in vain. Through the list, I've got some new "friends". And we actually have a common interest... one that matters a great deal to me. Thus endeth the sermon. Sorry to get so wordy, but I'm completely and utterly depressed at the moment for various reasons, and I just felt like doing some explaining. "...We'll laugh at all the silly things That we've both said and done And step into forever On the bright side of the sun..." What I actually meant by all this is that, yes, they were good videos compared to other 80's videos...but not quite up to "great" status...So I'm a perfectionist and expect alot from bands...that's just me. That's what drives me in my own musical endeavors (endeavours). There's always a certain sense of mystique about a band until you actually see what they look like...then you go...man, isn't that Elvis guy just really....cheesy? What were they thinking? I know people that didn't like MWH based on the fact that they looked kind of stupid in their videos. Many of these people think that MWH are a cheesy sounding band...I don't. I like the kind of simple pop songs that MWH, AFOS (A Flock of Seagulls), Trans-X, and others created during the 80's...I love synth-pop. But I had "great" expectations before I got the videos and I was on a Moonbeam until the whole video was over...then I came sliding down. It was over! I'd seen what I'd been waiting to see and thought I'd never see for the past 10 years or so....all in one night. My 'is that it?' was more of a letdown in the sense of "the search is over and I've seen it all" instead of "that was pretty boring". Many of the videos were hilarious and the 21st Century video was 'Great' with a capital G. A great big H for the Hall... Up to now, 31 people have shown their interest in getting the ROY/FOT80's 2for1 CD from me, even though I made you quite anxiuos about what it might cost. (You'll see that I was wrong ;-) In particulary, there will be no necessity to undergo any trouble about 'shipment points' in the US. I found a way to ship to you directly from Germany at very reasonable prices. Everybody who has stated his interest for this CD should have received a confirmation from me a few days ago. If someone hasn't, please contact me. Here are the expected costs in detail, according to the current standings - Hope it's not too complicated (but I'm afraid it is...) ($ means USD): 1.) Disc price - Negotiations with Carl Oglio are still going on. The disc is expected to sell for $15.98, just like other 2for1's from Oglio Records. Yet, Carl has offered to grant a discount for us hatters, but cannot give any details because his calculations are not yet finished. Did I hit the point, Carl? - I found some record shops that basically offered to grant a discount if I buy a bunch of discs at once. On the other hand, I didn't see much point in contacting any wholesale dealers yet, because the release details of the disc are still unknown. Though, for obvious reasons, from the point of logic, one would expect that Carl's offer should be the best anyway. (hint, hint :-) Unfortunately, currency conversion will cost another 7% of disc price. It's simply because one dollar that I send to Carl will cost me more DM than I will get for one dollar you hatters will send to me. As I'm not making any profit by this whole transaction, I don't want to make losses as well. Things might change, though, depending of the method of payment used. Also, I'd be glad about any other suggestions at this point. I don't like it myself. 2.) Postage Lucky enough, I found out that the German mail service grants considerable discounts on overseas shipments under certain conditions. Shipping 31 packages via air mail would cost $6.70 each package. Due to extremely complicated details of postage rates here in Germany, with increasing number of packages the price per unit will then continously decrease down to $5.2 each unit at a quantity of 50 packages. For more than 50 packages the price per package will stay the same (unless I send 5000 packages ;-). Shipping via surface mail (which I can do individually if someone wishes) will save $2.40, as well as shipping to European locations. Postage may become less if the actual packages will be lighter than I assumed for the above calculation (they won't weight more). Before time for payment has come I will weight a sample and we'll see. 3.) Packaging To be shipped at the above prices, all packages have to be IDENTICAL. I would have made freebie boxes myself, but they just won't accept it. :-( I received a sample of the boxes I will use today; they will be about $0.50 each. 4.) Money transfer Sending the money to Carl will cost me fixed $21 (remember, I'll have to send $480 or even more). ***Summary*** 31 discs 50 discs discs: $17.10 - X $17.10 - X postage (air) $ 6.70 $ 5.20 packaging $ 0.50 $ 0.50 money transfer $ 0.67 $ 0.42 ---------- ---------- total $24.97 - X $23.22 - X (whereby X is Carl's generous discount multiplied with 1.07) This price may change depending on the final list price of the discs. The discs may become cheaper depending on: method of payment (maybe) weight of packages shipping via surface mail (saves $2.40, individual) cost of packaging This is all I can say at this point. I hope everybody feels 'well-informed'! I think the offer is o.k. Please consider that the initial list price of the discs is already $16 due to the fact that it's a twofer. Anyone who feels that (s)he'd also want a copy at this pice, feel free to contact me. Anyone of the 31 people who feels it's too expensive please do as well. The MWH "SOS" is great, and I would even say superior to the original. It is very well produced, retains the charm of the original, yet has many little added flourishes. (Hmm, kinda like the Star Wars re-release... :-) Also, "Hello Goodbye" would be a perfect Beatles song for MWH to do. I can see it done in that PGtW/21C style. I use the Neato system, which comes with a special applicator to get the sticky on the CD nice and central - that was about 60UKSterling. The stickers come in all colours - even see-through though you'll have to make sure that the blank CD-R disks that you buy don't have any pre-printed stuff on - like the TDK batch that I just bought! # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info hats" in the message. # Postings must go to hats@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: CartOOn Guy Subject: (hats) Ivan is here? I've been to almost every other place in Canada west of Quebec! I guess I never could quite work Quebec into my trips. But I sure would love to go some day and especially to an Ivan concert. Maybe to also meet my hero Mr J. Bonhomme! Which brings up a point; for me, MWH, has, more than any other source, stirred up my interest in French Canadian culture. Ivan has definately made me proud that Quebec is a part of Canada! I do know some French but definately not enough to speak it! I learned what I know from high school. Sorry I haven't been writing to any of you. Oh yeah, its Tom the video guy. Ive been busy busy busy! I am currently working on getting a transfer in my company that will mean a $6,000 raise, if I actually get it. I've had all my interviewing and its down to 3 people! Problem is , I am worried sick. If I get rejected my heart will be broken. I will find out next week. I will be pulling my hair out until then..... OK now for the business at hand. Here is my opinion on the video. Of course I am going to say I like it.... In my case, the video and CDs have increased my love of Men Without Hats and not dimished it. Here is why..... (well besides the fact that I love all the videos and think that MWH kicks butt live): I can now enjoy MWH for what they really are.... or what they should be - a megahit band, not a one hit wonder band. I have always had the theory that the only thing holding MWH back was lack of exposure. I feel that most people simply don't like a band becasue they THINK that no one else likes them, they are not COOL or whatever, so they don't give the band a chance. Now that I have this videotape - I tested my theory with my metalhead - rap - grunge friends, you won't beleive the results. I showed most of friends the video with the attitude like "of course they have 8 videos--- they are huge like depeche mode". -- just to see what would happen. All of my friends (except for one who truly despises MWH) watched the tape all the way through. After really getting to know the band, most of them half way like them, and two love them. These are people who listen to metalica etc. Of course we could all care less one way or the other if MWH is popular or not. We will love them no matter what. But to some sheep this is all that matters.... ha ha. In other words, The more rare MWH stuff I have -> the BETTER I like this band + the more I can show them off to the non believers. Now bring on the demos!!! I am hungry again. By the way, Francis - I am dead serious about going to Montreal to visit. Let me just find out whether or not I have this job or not. Try and keep your eyes on Musique Plus to see if Ivan is playing a concert in Montreal soon. I WILL definately visit then - somehow. If a concert doesn't happen soon, I will come and visit you anyway in a couple of months. I might lose my vacation days when I transfer... This is all I've got to see. But you have a great idea Francis! I am with you. Yup, we stayed in an apartment in Montreal proper (near the St. Henri Metro stop), and we visited a little diner where the waitress' answer to "Do you understand English?" was (spelling...) "com ce, com ca" which I've understood to be "so-so". Anyway, one of the guys with us was from Columbia, Tennessee (a little town whose main holiday is Mule Day... I kid you not). He tried to say "Merci" and butchered it REALLY badly to sound like "Mercy" with a southern drawl "Murrr-see". I have owned the "Where Do The Boys Go?" 12-inch vinyl single for years and was quite pleased to have another copy of it on CD. I have no idea where "Editions Of You" comes from. Having it on "Collection" is the first time I've ever seen or heard of it. (Can anybody here tell me more regarding its origin?) I personally think that the extended version of "Where Do The Boys Go?" is quite a remix - infinitely moreso than what passed as a remix for "Pop Goes The World"! And "Editions Of You" is quite funny because of the little cheezy synth notes in the beginning. I mean, it can get no cheesier than that - which is what makes it so *fun*!!! The inclusion of both of these tracks cause me to give "Collection" enough stars to recommend buying it for them alone - but of course one gets so much more to listen to in doing so as well. Second best would be an international money order made out in US Dollars. *** Credit Card (Visa/MC/Amex) *** e-mail to info@oglio.com fax at (310) 798-3728 Include card number, expiry date, billing address, shipping address, telephone number. *** Money order *** Oglio Records PO Box 404-MWH241 Redondo Beach CA 90277 Don't for get to include your shipping address. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info hats" in the message. # Postings must go to hats@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Kevin Gamble Subject: (hats) Roy / Folk CD Is Here -Reply Date: 17 Feb 1997 14:16:46 -0600 I've waited 14 years to see that statement! I just wanted to let you know that the distribution of the ROY/Folk CD is currenly being worked on. It will definitively happen. Date: 17 Feb 1997 20:21:19 UT Hi all, In celebration of my 7th sobriety birthday, my wife and I went up to Vancouver B.C. While there, I found another copy of 21st Century, used for $8.99 (CAD). I picked it up in case anyone out there doesn't have it and wants it. CAD 8.99 (plus those damn Canadian taxes) works out to be about $7.41 (USD). I am not interested in making any money so if someone wants it for $7.41 plus what it takes to ship it to you, it is yours. Anytime I hear "Get It On (Bang a Gong)" on the radio, I always imagine Ivan singing it, and it sounds wonderful. Well done big C :-) Anyway, just ordered the new CD writing software so with any luck I'll soon have _no_ excuse in making a new copy of the live CD again, this time with no gaps inbetween the tracks! I know that the software that JR had didn't allow him to do that - thats Toast Pro I'm afraid!! Tom: u got a DAT of the original recording? The only DAT I can do will be from the video - not quite up to the quality of the master... Please let me know. Bonehead - you still breathing? Still trying to get Blue Juice 4 u... Chris Handshaw - coming to London any time? Apart from that, was the message from Ivan real of fake - only Mulder and Scully can tell us and their series on the UK TV network has finished - booo - now we'll never know if the truth was out there... lol. If it was then it was a great honour for us all to hear from the 'Great One'. Just think, we may all have helped in giving him a nudge to get his finger out (or sequencer anyway!!) and get recording some new material. If the rumours are true, then he was only just down the road from me - hey Ivan... call in for a cup of tea next time!!! Keep on talking... we might stop a War!
