My boss has just been to Canada and brought me back 4 Cds, The Spell, Pop Goes The World, and 21st Century! Xmas in June! What can I say?=20 Started with the Spell. Title track blew me away when Ivans vocals came in... unfortunately the rest of the LP didn't seem to live up to this promise. Two listens later and its starting to make more sense (but not sure of "Rockin with my man Ivan"!) Next up Pop Goes the World....Magic. Do I detect a bit if OMD in there. All in all I love this. The childrens voices just seem to make the album more fun... 21st Century seems more grown up, but tis very good. Should have read the sleeve as suddenly I thought I know this one, then noticed it was SOS! Now if I can just get my tape deck fixed I can get them in the car..... Oh yes. The 4th CD was Living In Clip by Ani Difranco which is also amazing.....Folk with attitude. They didn't enclose an invoice and the cd case was broken in the mail, but on my visa statement they charged me $24.99 Cn which converted to a mere $18 US. Simple!! Free phone call and a week later I had the cd for only a couple dollars more than anything else at Tower... If that doesn't work for you try emailing A&B Sound in Vancouver http://www.absound.ca/ They will send you this or any other MWH cd you want (except ROT/Fot80s of course). And what an incredible cd (The Spell)!!! (But that's another email...) My name is Frank Spinath, I'm 27 years old and live in Bielefeld, Germany. I work as a researcher for the Dept of Psychology at the local University and I live together with a girl who will hopefully marry me in October this year. In my spare-time I'm devoted to electronic music. Together with a friend of mine I run a project called 'Seabound' (main influences: Kraftwerk, Lassigue Bendthaus, Frontline Assembly) and we are currently sending out demos just for fun. I'm also a CD collector of electronic music. I love the music of the 80's and (apart from great contemporary artists like Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails, Momus or Tori Amos and Fiona Apple) I focus on this particular area. MWH, however, have always meant 'the little extra' to me. Together with some early releases of Visage, Propaganda or Thompson Twins this music perfectly captures the 'spirit' of the time, in my mind, although I guess this is partly so because this time is 'confounded' with first romance and discovering oneself in my case. Anyway, rummaging through the MWH archive yesterday inspired me to make so many words in the first place. I was amazed how much is going on in this mailing list and how kind most of you people involved are (like organizing CD mailings and stuff). Thanks to your information I was encouraged to order 'The Spell' directly from HMV Toronto. They were really nice and seemed to be quite accustomed to 'my case' already. I'm looking forward to hearing the new material and to get into closer contact with some of you. I admit that corporate rock is still very strong, and that I'm not particularly happy about the disco resurgence, but I think there is a lot more good music out there today than in the eighties. > That is why I think MWH was largely ignored/overlooked. > The way I remember it is quite different. After the success of SAFETY DANCE, Yvan and the MWH were heavily sollicitated by the industry. But Yvan made big decisions at that time that would put him and his band on some kind of "black-list". He refused to do the cover of ROLLING STONE, he refused to play on AMERICAN BANDSTAND (I think you get the picture). Integrity is, in my opinion, one of Yvan's strongest quality. He refused to trade it for huge popularity. I think, in the end, he made the best decision. > Which album is Antartica from?? It's from the E.P. FOLK OF THE 80'S (part I). > I remember as a child I saw at Eaton's department store the > Freeways ep--but who has money when you're a kid. I think one entire > side was a song? Yep! Side one was FREEWAYS and side two was the E.P. FOLK OF THE 80'S (part I). That E.P. was released in CD format (at least in Canada). Last question, you're asking our opinion on different artist covering MWH songs. I'm not sure I would like it. What I like in those songs is the particular sound (I know it can be easily reproduce, but why go for a copy?) and, mainly, Yvan's incredible voice! Can Bananarama mimic that voice? P.S. Denny, you can put more than one phrase in an e-mail. That way you don't end up sending 12 of them in one day! ;o) To those going to Yvan's concert in Toronto tonight: flood us with feed-backs! Excellente journee a tous! I saw it plenty of time on store shelves in the late eighties, even hold it in my hands several times, wandering if I should by it, but... I did'nt. And now it's impossible to find. BTW, I have the vinyl format of this E.P. (complete with a nice 8"X 10" black & white picture of Yvan and full credits for the Freeways and Folk of the eighties recording sessions). Only played once (when I put it on tape). Since I will soon owned the bootleg collection, and I'm more interested in the songs than the object, if someone is interested in buying, make an offer. I have been searching for these cds for YEARS, even ordered them myself (with the catalog numbers!!) continually while I was the import buyer for Tower Records L.A. No luck. The Oglio 2fer cd that I got was made in L.A. (Redondo Beach), imported to Germany and then shipped back. How ridiculous (and expensive). But worth it!! The day I got "Collection", I put it on and listened to it over and over. My girlfriend's sister happened to be in town as well (shudder), and she was there at our place cooking dinner. I started up "Safety Dance", 'cause I wanted to hear it again, and the sister piped up, "Is that that crappy Men Without Hats? One of the worst things about the 80s!" And I was about to retort, when my GIRLFRIEND took up with her sister, blurting out, "Yeah, he listens to all sorts of crappy 80s music! It's all trash! Hahahahaha!" And then for the rest of the night, all they did was rag on my music, even going so far as to go through my CD collection and enthusiastically rate (and BErate) the bands they didn't like. It wasn't so much what they said, it was the fact that I saw JOY in my girlfriend's eyes, as if she were thinking, "Wow! I can do something cool with my big sister!" That really hurt me. Date: 16 Jun 1997 18:52:22 +0200 e99406@hrz.uni-paderborn.de Hi! I'm a member of this list for a couple of weeks now and have e-mailed with several list members meanwhile, but I haven't introduced myself to the list yet. My name is Thomas, I come from Germany and like many other list members I have to e-mail at University. I'm a fan of MEN WITHOUT HATS since the SAFETY DANCE was released in Germany in the early 80ies. Like most of You I don't like most of the music of the 90ies. I especially like the old Synthie Pop and High Energy Classics of the early 80ies (Bobby 'O', Dead Or Alive, Divine, Fancy, Flirts, Lime, Real Life, Trans-X, Visage, etc.) MEN WITHOUT HATS is one of my favourite groups. I especially like ROY and FOLK 3. Like most of You I was a bit disappointed by the SIDEWAYS album that didn't sound like the earlier stuff at all. But this change of style showed that Ivan & Co. were not interested in making quick money by putting out one album after another in the same sound, like so many bands of the 90ies do. Unfortunately the University Computers have no sound card, so I couldn't listen to this Internet Sound sample until now: http://www.toxrecords.com/audio/open.au But now a friend (Norbert) has copied this sound sample on tape for me. So I was able to hear a short part of IVAN's 'OPEN YOUR EYES' on Saturday (I haven't got the CD's yet - record dealer couldn't import them; will order them at HMV Toronto now, I guess.): The track sounds absolutely fantastic! Like MEN WITHOUT HATS in the 'good old days'! The classic combination of IVAN's powerful voice and Synthie Dance Sounds is back! Time to dance again! Even Norbert, who isn't 'stuck in the 80ies' like me, was absolutely impressed by this sound sample. He couldn't believe that this great song is only available in Canada: "With the right promotion this could be a Top Ten hit in Germany! No wonder all the German kids buy these bad records if the really good stuff is only released in foreign countries...)" O.K. that's it for now. Ah, yes: I won't tell You where I place my HATS CD's as I think this discussion is absolutely boring. But one last thing: > Hey Carl! How about it? And the first Trans-X CD too...great ideas for > rereleases! This CD was already released by the Canadian Record label UNIDISC. The CD includes both versions of the LIVING ON VIDEO Album and several different Versions of the Title Track. That's all for now, folks! The show was AWESOME!!!.= For those of you there, I was the big guy in the jean jacket to the right= of centre up against the rail at the front. Yes, I know it looked like I= was having seizures standing up....that's just the way I dance! A few observations from the front: -lots of eye contact and some smiles from Ivan and the backup singer Lind= a, they both seemed happy to see people up front singing the new songs -Ivan looked so cool and collected, he seemed to be having a great time -does anyone know what Ivan's tattoos are? I saw two for sure but couldn= 't tell what the were (both on his arms), he also had the numbers 0 and 13 o= n one of his forearms but I couldn't tell if they were written or tattoos -= anyone out there know anything about this? After the show I spoke to Linda (backup singer) for about 5 minutes. She= said it was great to see people singing the new songs. They appreciate t= he moral support. I'm pretty sure Linda said she has worked with Mitsou before and that's how she got linked up with Ivan. She had lots of fun a= t the show. No word on any tour, but she's hopeful that there will be one.= Linda also told me that the re-worked version of PGTW was the keyboardist= 's work. I have both the CD and the > lp and the CD is pathetic! > > Rod > Michigan e99406@hrz.uni-paderborn.de Hi Rod, Hi folks! There are existing 2 different versions of the album 'LIVING ON VIDEO'. Both versions include the Hits '3-D DANCE', 'MESSAGE ON THE RADIO' and of course 'LIVING ON VIDEO'. The '86 version of 'LIVING ON VIDEO' is different from the version of the '83 album though. I also prefer the older version. The other songs of the 2 albums are completely different: The original '83 album includes: * Nitelife * Digital Wrold * 21st century * Josee The '86 album includes: * Through the Eyes of the 90ies * Ich liebe Dich * Something's in the air * Monkey Dance * Eyes of Desire I also think that the original album was better than the '86 release, but I like 'Through the Eyes of the 90ies' very much though. Besides the '86 release was recorded without the 'sexy voice' of the girl who left TRANS-X before the release of their third hit '3-D DANCE' to become a model. Of course her voice can be heard on all the tracks of the '83 album, but for the promotion of '3-D DANCE' Pascal had to 'pick up' another girl (playback). The CD includes BOTH album releases. The only track missing is the original version of the '3-D DANCE' (only a Remix Version is included). The CD includes 3 versions of LIVING ON VIDEO (Original, '86 Remake and French Original). So in my opinion this CD is nearly complete. You can check the details on internet page http://www.unidisc.com/search/ when You search for catalog number SPLK-7085. But another TRANS-X album is really hard to get on CD or vinyl: It's called 'ON MY OWN'. Anybody who has this album: Send me an e-mail! Is anybody on the list complaining what this has got to do with MEN WITHOUT HATS? Both Bands made great Synthie Pop and both bands come from Canada. And, as I have just found out: TRANS-X seem to have done a cover version of the 'SAFETY DANCE': Just search for this song title in the above mentioned data base! Has anybody heard this version? That's all, folk of the 80ies! I have both the 1986 lp and the 1993 CD but I do not have the 1983 lp (so I can't comment on that one). The 1986 album is the one I would like to see rereleased as 6 of the albums 9 songs do not appear on the CD. Therefore the CD is far from complete. I just compared them both by ear for verification and this is what I heard: The 6 songs: Living on Video, Eyes of Desire, Through the Eyes of the 90's, Ghost, Ich Liebe Dich, and Something's in the Air, that are on the 1986 album "ARE NOT" on the Unidisc CD in the same form. There are significant differences (i.e. listen to the beginning of Eyes of Desire and you hear a robotic DESIRE-IRE on the album but not the CD). The songs may be the same but they have different instruments, speeds, times, and even vocals at times. Check the times below for verification and you will at least see that the times are off if you can't hear the difference yourself. Maybe herein lies the confusion. Those that have bought the CD are definitely in for a treat if they buy the 1986 lp because the songs are phenomenally better on the lp. Here are the 1986 album tracks with track times and year produced: *Living on video (5:30) - 1984 (this version not on CD) *Eyes of desire (3:30) - 1986 (this version not on CD) 3-d dance (5:42) - 1983 Monkey dance (5:42) - 1986 *Through the eyes of the 90's (3:50) - 1986 (this version not on CD) *Ghost (3:55) - 1986 (this song not on CD) *Ich liebe dich (i love you) (4:07) - 1986 (this version not on CD) *Something's in the air (3:32) - 1986 (this song not on CD) Message on the radio (5:22) - 1983 (this song slightly longer on the lp) Here are the 1993 CD tracks: Living on video (5:54) - 1983 Message on the radio (5:10) - 1983 Nitelife (7:10) - 1983 21st century (5:24) - 1983 Josee (5:42) - 1983 Digital world (3:30) - 1983 Eyes of desire (3:32) - 1986 3d-dance (5:41) - 1983 Monkey dance - (5:45) - 1986 Through the eyes of the 90's (5:05) - 1986 Ich liebe dich (i love you) (5:25) - 1986 Living on video (re-recorded) (7:04) - 1986 Message on the radio (remix) (5:27) - 1986 Vivre sur video (6:12) - 1983 I hope this clears things up a bit about Trans-X releases. (Just compare the texts of both groups!) I think we have some kink of agreement here. But it's not enough. You see, for me, Men Without Hats are not a Synthie Pop Bands. Men Without Hats was a vehicle for a great artist. What is an artist? It is somebody with a great sensibility, able to apprehend the world we live in, and the power to express it in an artistic format. That has nothing to do with synthetizers or disco or all those 80's gadgets. The voice of Yvan and an accoustic piano is all what I need. I'll admit that I love that sound (that's why I bought those Trans-X deal). But this is not why I listen to Men Without Hats, or Kraftwerk, or Ultravox. It's for the spirit behind it, what puts life in those songs. Trans-X was a commercial entreprise. Pascal Languirand is a brilliant man, and he knew how to make those machines work. But mechanical know-how and a nice hairdoe wont make it for me (just to reassure you, I'd say the same thing about Gary Numan). > > But if You read IVAN'S new promo material on the TOX RECORDS Internet page and what list members write > about his live performance, You must realize that also IVAN is (at least now) clearly dance music > orientated. Yeah but, so what? He could be botanic oriented! The way I see it Ivan is not very pertinent when he tries to justify himself (read: sell himself). But I don't mind, I like the artist, I don't have to buy the add. Thrue, on the first level. The Spell is disco oriented. But look more deeply. Even musicaly speaking, there's a lot more than meet the eye. For example, have you heard the song 7 SECONDS by Youssou N'dour? Listen to it, then come back to THE SPELL (the song). > And TRANS-X made first class dance music. Of what should this band be a clone? Date: 20 Jun 1997 15:13:11 +0200 e99406@hrz.uni-paderborn.de Hi! This list seems to be turning into a TRANS-X list! No, don't worry, 'Hatters', most of the TRANS-X mails have just a wrong subject statement. But THIS IS about TRANS-X again (I'll keep it short): > Here are the 1993 CD tracks: > > Living on video (5:54) - 1983 > Message on the radio (5:10) - 1983 > Nitelife (7:10) - 1983 > 21st century (5:24) - 1983 > Josee (5:42) - 1983 > Digital world (3:30) - 1983 > Eyes of desire (3:32) - 1986 > 3d-dance (5:41) - 1983 > Monkey dance - (5:45) - 1986 > Through the eyes of the 90's (5:05) - 1986 > Ich liebe dich (i love you) (5:25) - 1986 > Living on video (re-recorded) (7:04) - 1986 > Message on the radio (remix) (5:27) - 1986 > Vivre sur video (6:12) - 1983 > > I hope this clears things up a bit about Trans-X releases. > > Rod Thanks, Rod! I have to admit that I have forgotten some tracks of the '86 album which are really missing on the CD. But all the 7 tracks of the '83 album are included. That's what I wanted to say. So You get the '86 songs as a kind of 'bonus tracks'. And now: Back to You, Claude: > the power to express it in an artistic format. That has nothing to do > with synthetizers or disco or all those 80's gadgets. The voice of Yvan > and an accoustic piano is all what I need. Yes, sure, IVAN has an incredible voice and of course he is a great artist. But be honest: Would You be a IVAN fan now if MWH had released the SAFETY DANCE as a accoustic piano version? I guess, You wouldn't even have noticed them. The sound of a band depends very much on the instruments they use. The people on this list for sure ARE all IVAN fans and so they are of course all interested in accoustic material of IVAN: > He also spoke about an album he recorded prior to THE SPELL that was not > release. It's a jazz album in french. He said that he didn't released it > because he felt the stuff in it was to personal (being the first album > he wrote in french, and having been raised in french). > Should we try to make this album available for fans? He he he! Sure, I want this album, too. But to be honest, I'm not a jazz fan at all. So the point is: When You are really interested in an artist, You want to hear anything he produces. But first You have to BECOME interested. And becoming interested in an artist is mainly determined by the sound of his music, and therefore by the instruments he uses. It's that 'first impression' that counts. > I'll admit that I love that > sound (that's why I bought those Trans-X deal). But this is not why I > listen to Men Without Hats, or Kraftwerk, or Ultravox. I like ULTRAVOX very much, too (at least the songs sung by MIDGE URE). > Trans-X was a > commercial entreprise. Pascal Languirand is a brilliant man, and he knew > how to make those machines work. But mechanical know-how and a nice > hairdoe wont make it for me (just to reassure you, I'd say the same > thing about Gary Numan). I never called the TRANS-X releases 'high art' or something like that. But You can't explain Pascals success just with his computer experience! As I already told You: With 'LIVING ON VIDEO' he invented an absolutely new dance sound. Sure, his melodies are very simple, but they get in Your brain and will never leave it again: "Ear-Worms!" > Many European bands have tried to imitate this > > sound meanwhile, but none of them has ever even come near to this classic dance track! > > Heee... Who you mind giving some examples? Sure! The first imitation I noticed was from a German DJ called MIKE MAREEN. At the end of the 80ies he released a song called LOVE SPY which exactly sounded like 'LIVING ON VIDEO'. He copied the famous base line, the song structure and even Pascals strange way of singing. (I have to admit: I like this song, though I know, it's a rip off.) But since the beginning of the nineties we unfortunately have this 'Techno Wave' here in Germany. The big disadvantage of today's computer technology is that now EVERYBODY can make musik. And when I say EVERYBODY, I mean it! The hit lists are made by kids, you know! So You buy Yourself a computer, make a nice colorful video and You're a star in these days. And if You have no ideas: Just copy those creative acts of the good old days. The famous base line of 'LIVING ON VIDEOS' was copied by many, many Techno acts. And there have even been many coverversions of 'LIVING ON VIDEO' here in Germany. One of these bands who covered the song even called themselves TRANCE-X. I ask myself why the record company of TRANS-X (Matra/Unidisc, or Polydor here in Germany) has permitted this... One last Question to all of You concerning TRANS-X: Has anybody one of Pascal Languirand's solo albums he released in Canada before he formed TRANS-X? Beam me up, Scotty... I remember when I was younger (13?) I only bought albums by band with long hairs and electric guitars (plugged in a fuzz preferably). Those where the years of Deep Purple, Grand Funk, Black Sabbath, Uria Heep and Led Zep. A couple of years later, I was seeking band who played "non-traditionnal" rock instruments like flute, recorder, violin, krumhorn, bassoon (you get the point). That's how I discovered bands like Gryphon, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Kraftwerk. But during all that time I was deep into Frank Zappa (can you put a tag on that guy?) and Shawn Phillips, and Cat Stevens. Are you confused yet? Nowadays I'm just looking for great (and fun) music. Be sure I would have noticed MWH even if they had been an "a capella" band. Just to convince you, try to grab something by Nick Drake ( http://www.algonet.se/~iguana/DRAKE/DRAKE.html ) or Gerard Manset ( http://milou.via.ecp.fr/~spy/presente.html ), two of my all time favorite artists, and you will understand what I mean. > becoming interested in an artist is mainly determined by the sound of h= is > music, and therefore by the instruments he uses. It's not that extreme, but I have to admit that most of my records are synths dominated. There are many rock tracks I like, too, of course! Another example of the importance of the sound: Do You know 'Ich liebe Dich' by (yes, of course) TRANS-X? The song starts very nice. But as so= on as the refrain starts the sound of the song changes completely: It gets really very bad. This ruins the whole song, though the melody of the refrain is still O.K.. =20 > Here, I couldn't agree more. Midge Ure was an essential part of > Ultravox. Here's a summary of the messages I've kept concerning the 3CD bootlegs. Some of these were sent only to the list of people who requested the CD's, others were to the whole list. The last message is from Rod (Jupiter8) who loaned Todd his copies of the bootlegs. (If you aren't interested in the details, delete this now as its kind of long). Rod... did you ever hear back from Todd about your CD's? Jeff ---- Good news everybody. Jupiter Eight (Rod) has been kind enough to offer to loan me his CDs to copy, so that problem has been solved. I'm going to get prices on the blank discs tomorrow. I'm guessing they'll be between $5.50 and $6.00 each. Shipping in the US should be $3, I'll check on international shipping. I'll be out of town for a about a week starting on Wednesday (a much deserved vacation). When I get back we'll get things going. When I get final pricing I'll send out another email. If anyone has changed their mind and doesn't want the discs please let me know. If I've got your address here by mistake, I'm sorry - please let me know. If anyone wants more than one set please let me know (Demetrius, I've got you marked down for four). best, todd ---- Ok, here are the final details for the CDs: Each CD set (3 discs) will cost $20. This will cover the cost of blank CDs, printing the inserts and the padded envelope to ship them in. Shipping in the U.S. will be $3.00 for one set. Canada will be $3.25. Japan will be $8.25. Europe will be $6.50. See below for shipping of multiple sets. I will be out of town for about a week starting on Wednesday. If you need to reach me please use this address. Copying will commence when I return. Copies will be made as fast as I can - I only have one burner so it may take me a little time to work my way through them. The discs will be delivered in the order I received the requests for them. If it is at all possible, payments sent to me ASAP will help cover the cost of the blank CD order I'm about to place. My address is below. A separate order form message will follow this one - please use it to place your orders. When I receive your email order I will send a response to confirm it. As soon as I get back from my trip I'll email everyone who has sent payments to confirm that I received them. Payments from the U.S. can be a check or money order. Payments from outside the U.S. should be money orders in U.S. funds. I will also set up a web page when I return so you can check on your discs' status. [rest of message not included] ---- Hi everyone. Just wanted to let you know that I'm back from my trip so things can start moving again for the Men Without Hats Bootlegs. Things are progressing well. I'm still waiting for the blanks to arrive, but I expect them sometime this week. If you've sent a payment already I'll be sending you a confirmation email sometime in the next day or so. More info to follow later this week. todd ---- This email is to acknowledge that payment has been received for the Men Without Hats bootlegs CDs that you ordered. todd ---- Ok, this is the last call for sign ups for copies of the 3 bootlegs. At least for now. Email me for information. todd ---- Cc: hats@xmission.com Has anyone heard from Todd about the CD's he was going to burn? I leant him my CD's which he was going to return right away and I haven't heard anything back from him in about a week or more...I even sent him an email but have not gotten a response back - although it might be a work address. Maybe he's having net troubles? If anyone knows anything please let me know.... Thanks... Laura, I am definately going to be in Montreal the 19th-20th. I need a place to stay as well. I have a good idea. Why don't all of us go to the same motel, and then we could go to the show as a group (and see Montreal too). Francis, Do you think we should stay in a motel near you or downtown???? As a "local" myself (hum) I can give you advice! First, I will be going to Ivan's concert with Francis, so join the club. Second you should definitely choose a Motel downtown (Francis is very fare from the action, me on the other hand live near downtown ;o). I could arrange for some reservation, I know some nice places. Claude, maybe you could post a recommended hotel's phone number to the list and we could all make our own reservations. Also, please tell us how to arrange for tickets. Maybe you could take ticket orders, get a block of seats so we could all be together, and then we pay you back when we get there? If you can do this, put me down for 2 tickets. I am going with a friend from work (also a female). If there are any other femmes sans chapeaux going, we could split a room 3 or 4 ways. WB to me, not the list, if you're interested in room-sharing. I should be picking up my new car this weekend - a Mazda MPV that seats 7. If there is anyone else from the area (NC, SC, GA, VA, TN) who wants a ride, we could probably work something out. There's room for 5 more in the MPV. Atlanta folks: It's about 6 hours for you to make it to my house, where there is plenty of parking. We could then all pile in the MPV and drive up to Montreal. Again, if you want to car-pool, WB to me, not the list. I think a sightseeing excursion around Montreal would be *wonderful*. I have seen pictures, and the city looks beautiful. I'm about to call AAA to get maps, etc. I AM SOOOOOOO EXCITED!!! If you want a feeling of the city, go take a look at http://www.fyinet.com/ . For an idea of the geographical situation go take a peek at http://www.fyinet.com:/fyinet/clients/selpages/travtour/index.htm . That's Montreal Metro Map! To find out where I live, look for the Lionel-Groulx station (one of the 4 big black dots). Directly south of that, there's an island. That's where I live; Nun's Island. For Francis, look for Henri-Bourassa station (up north). Just go farther north, you'll find Francis (on Laval Island, almost as big as Montreal Island). Now the concert. It will be held near Pie-IX station (7th station from the right, on the green line). That's close to the olympic stadium. All the hotels that I will post to the list are located near Berri-UQAM station (black dot in the center). If I know how much people are coming, when they're arriving, and for how long they're staying, I could arrange some nice activities! Keep me informed! Claude and Laura, you both have excellent ideas! Count me in for a room too, if there are any guys that need a roommate. If we plan this right, we can all do Montreal and the show together. Let's wait till Claude posts about the Motels (and we check the pages) and then we can take a vote, where we will be staying. I have been to Montreal, myself a couple of times before. Perhaps I can help us navigate around the city a bit. Of course, Claude and Francis will be like 100 times better as guides. Eye of Newt! Leg of Lamb! -Forwarded Date: 26 Jun 1997 16:24:20 -0500 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain Content-Disposition: inline Hey you guy-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-z-z-z! I've been laying low for a few weeks trying to get my thoughts together before I went spouting off about a song I didn't like - just in case it began to grow on me after a few listens. I ordered 'The Spell' directly from HMV Montreal about a month ago. It arrived in good condition (i.e. the case was not cracked or broken). I am right handed and store all of my 900+ CDs in an ever expanding collection of 100-disc-capacity Case Logic books. I do keep my Beatles and Men Without Hats CDs in their jewel cases though because they're extra special to me and look nicer that way. Overall, I consider 'The Spell' to be a successful release for Ivan. I enjoy telling others about it and playing it for them if they're willing to listen to it. I have never felt this way about 'In The 21st Century', so make what you will of that. If I find anything to be 'bad' about 'The Spell' it's its extreme patchiness, or, in other words, lack of stylistic continuity. It causes the CD to come off as a sort of various artists compilation instead of a cohesive, focused single-artist project. Some tracks on this CD are the first I've heard from Ivan that seem to indicate a willingness on his part to abandon his original artistic integrity in lieu of doing things others have done before. That impression disturbs me and, in my opinion, is not a road to continued success for any artist. But who knows? Maybe Ivan was just exorcising some demons. The Spell: I would very much like to have a 'clean' version of this song to listen to. I don't consider Ivan's use of profanity in this song to be taking the Lord's name in vain, because the Lord's name is not 'god', however, the presence of such profanity in the lyrics is quite distracting to me. It robs me of the ability to focus on the other awesome aspects of this song. It's a fly in the ointment; a spanner in the works, if you will. (I also think exactly the same about Eagles', 'Life In The Fast Lane' and have since the first time I heard it many full moons / asylums ago.) Superbadgirls: When I heard this I recognized it immediately as the song everybody in the list was saying sounded like Pretzle. That's OK with me though, 'cuz I like Pretzle. However, even though it's kinda fun to listen to, I have difficulty accepting this song from Ivan. It seems very out of place. Chain Reaction: I consider this song to be the point at which the album *really* begins. Everything about this song is great except for the trite expression, 'Can you dig it?' being asked several times throughout. I like the special effects added to Ivan's voice when he asks it, but the use of such a hackneyed phrase is quite distracting. Open Your Eyes: I'm very proud to be in the fancamp of an artist who can make a song like this! Absolutely brilliant! 1972 (Slippin' Away): This song to me is a sore thumb which robs 'The Spell' of all the momentum that the previous two songs worked so diligently to build. I could probably learn to like it as a good joke track if it were located somewhere else in the index but in the middle of the CD is not where it belongs. It might have made a good final, unnamed track after a long pause following 'Outro' or something, maybe, but no... Sorry, Ivan. I cannot accept this one. You: This one might grow on me with a hundred more listenings or so, but I generally listen to this album while driving in the car and something about it just sucks in that environment so I end up skipping past it. And whoever decided to stick such a slow song immediately after such a fast disco dance track like '1972...' must have been out of his mind. It only contributes to the patchiness of this CD which I alluded to earlier. Forever: This song is almost as good as 'Open Your Eyes' but I'll probably need to hear it several more times before I really, really learn to enjoy it as much. www: I and my wife hate rap with a passion, yet when we listen to this in the car we can't help but let it play all the way through. It gives us some of the biggest ha-has we've gotten from any song in a long, long time. What a wonderful parody! Thanks Ivan for the voluminous grins, smiles, giggles, and laughs - we really appreciate them! Somethin: I wish more of 'The Spell' could have been like this. Fly: Aside from the disco rhythms and its anti-climactic nature, I wish more of 'The Spell' could have been like this too. Outro: I really like this. Did I read somewhere awhile back that somebody on this list doesn't? I think it's a great closer. Very fun and experimental. Myke mykec@delphi.com http://people.delphi.com/mykec Love me or hate me. I know that Claude is ready to do the guide, may be we can arrange something with two or three cars, what about Vince?????? I have a Toyota Corrola, I could bring with me 4 peoples. What do you think about that Claude? Ciao! Eye of Newt! Leg of Lamb! -Forwarded Date: 30 Jun 1997 10:10:09 +0200 My review of The Spell: I've been on a vacation for a week. At long last I've got my copy of Th= e spell, and these are my first impressions: First of all I think The Spell is something Ivan can be proud of. Somehow I come to think of Pet Shop Boys from time to time when I play = this CD. I don't consider that to be a negative resemblance though. The reas= ons why I compare them is perhaps the same upbeat tempo, catchy melodies an= d similar synth sounds. Anybody agree with me? Anyway The spell track for track: The spell: I like this one, especially when Ivan's dark voice appears a= fter his first "echo" voice. It's a good melody, and I don't mind his profan= ity. Superbadgirls: OK, I guess. I don't think of it as good as the first, perhaps I don't fancy Ivan's talking in the verses, it gets somewhat boring. Chain Reaction: This is a good melody, but this is a place I think Ivan= ' is close to Pet Shop Boys. The same comment on Ivan's talking goes to this= one. Open Your Eyes: Yes, this song is great! No doubt about that. This is something only Ivan could have made. I wish they would play it more on = the radio as well. Here in Norway I haven't heard it on the radio at all. 1972: I absolutely love this song! All from the cheering intro, arabic influence in the beginning of the catchy verse, the disco influence in = the chorus, and Ivans singing. I can't understand why so many don't underst= and this song?? You: Time to relax, a somewhat too slow melody. It has not grown on me = yet. Forever: Yes. Once again, Ivan is making a classic track. I like the en= ding as well, with the child singing. www: Like Myke I'm not into rap, but somehow Ivan comes around this fac= t and makes me like this song. Somethin: Ivan opens his eyes. I close mine. This song is relaxing, but= I think it lacks some kind of finishing touch in the chorus. Fly: The mood of this song reminds me of a upbeat version of "Captain o= f her heart" a song made popular by Double(?) in the middle of the 80's. = This track is however much better. Outro: Ivan doing experiments with jungle! That's what it is! Date: 27 Jun 1997 20:34:13 -0700 Hi all! I finally tracked down the T-shirt place that I wanted to find - they moved to Durham!! Anyway, just a quick nose count - who might want a T-shirt? White, with the red & balck MWH logo on front, and on back, in black "You can dance if you want to" and "hats@xmission.com." Does that sound OK? Definitely X-Large!!!!!! (if you wear a size small, I don't want to hear about it - I'll just be bitter) Of course we can't talk price until I know how many I would get, but I told the girl probably 50 to 100 shirts. I have an appointment on Thursday after work to place the order. She said we could probably have the T-shirts in time to wear to Ivan's concert in July!! ;-) Is anyone else going? Right now it looks like Trena and me from NC, and Tom from Ohio. C'mon, gang - let's get together!! I'm at home the rest of the day today, and possibly the rest of the week. Jim has been working on the roof, and today just had a small accident involving a crowbar, resulting in a root canal in about an hour. Hmmm. Anyway, please send your replies here (home address). PJ, Lars, and Henning - I think I'm going to try to go to a HMV in Montreal while I'm there to get you your Spell CDs - hang in there; I did get your messages... Anyone else want the Spell while I'm there? ;-) Hope to see lots of you soon!!!!! :-) Laura (not Jim) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info hats" in the message. # Postings must go to hats@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Men Without Hats discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?hats
