I must say I'm quite pleased that someone brought this up! Mw/oH and SoM have
long been my two favorite bands. Those folks who cubbyhole by label can't
catch the similarities -- say the Men are "technopop" and the Sisters are
"gothic." But I played "Corrosion" for a friend from Antrim right after a
barrage of Men, and he was surprised when I told him it was a different band!
Thought it was just a "different phase" (I mean, is "Vision Thing" further
removed from ROY than "Sideways?")
What I like about them both is that neither throws a message at you -- just a
perfect blend of sound and poetry which somehow, in the end, just
incorporates itself right into the listener's philosophy. And hey -- I like
"Sideways" too. I'd hate to think any of us would ever begrudge an artist the
right to experiment!

I have both the local (upstate NY) and the time to go. I've been a fan for
over 5 years now. I'm 18 now so since I just turned a teenager, I've been

Does anyone else think that Heartbeat City by The Cars sounds very MWH'ish
Although Rik Okasek's voice doesn't sound like Ivans, he has a very similar
singing style (almost spoken, very few sustained notes). The Cars are
usually a bland middle-of-the-road guitar rock band, but this album is very
synth orientated and the riffs have a definite MWH ambience.
Particularly Hattish are I Refuse, You Might Think & Heartbeat City.
Does anyone else have this album and agree/disagree?

I've not been on this list for very long and so missed my opportunity to
vote on this song list that seems to have caused such a stir. I have
however been reading the postings about it with interest and would like to
make a few observations
1. It seems to me that the people who collated the results have put a lot
of time and effort into doing so and are justified in being offended when
their efforts are maligned by everyone just because it isn't identical to
their own personal list. How about a bit of gratitude! At the end of the
day, all they have done collate YOUR votes and reported the results. We
shouldn't shoot the messenger just because we don't like the message!
2. I agree with some of the postings that question our right to TELL Ivan
what songs he should play. Ivan has been in the business for a very long
time now and I am quite sure that he has a very good idea of what it is his
audience want to hear. The man is putting on a private show for us - isn't
that enough? Everyone seems to want to have their cake and eat it. I
would ideally like to see the concert be a retrospective of MWH through the
years, with Ivan playing HIS favorite songs from ALL the albums (including
The Spell), giving his reasons why each track was selected. I think the
insights as to why he chose various songs would be fascinating.
3. You guys all seem to be missing the point about live shows. Half the
thrill of a live show is NOT KNOWING what will be played. OK, your
favorite might not make the cut, but I have been to several shows by other
artists where an average album track has been transformed into an awesome
live one. I for one have never gone home unhappy from a live show just
because they didn't play such and such.
4. It's one thing to demand what you want played, but to also demand what
version - come on, give the guy some credit! Again, there'e nothing I like
more in a live show than when a band take one of their classics and perform
it in a completely new and different way - doing an acoustic version, or
turning a 3 minute song into a 10 minute opus. You all love Ivan for his
musical creativity - don't stifle it!
5. Another great treat for me at a live concert, is when a band you love
cover someone else's song in their own style. Ivan has already proved he
is good at this (SOS, I am the walrus) and I would love to hear him
surprise us with cover we've not heard him do before.
6. The track list published seems to me to be very similar to the bootleg
CD concerts already out there. Surely it would be nice to hear some
different stuff, if only for the CD afterwards.
7. Does Ivan ever read postings to this list? Has he ever posted one
himself? If he does, perhaps he should post his views and end this
bickering once and for all.
When push comes to shove, we're all on this list for the same reason -
because we love MWH, if Ivan came on and sang "Twinkle twinkle little star"
I'd still go home happy - 'cos he'd sung it for us - and ONLY US!
While I'm on the subject of the concert - where has this number of 100 or
so attendees come from? Is this the number of us on the list or is there an
attendees list somewhere - if there is, how do I go about getting my name
on it?
I am hoping to travel over to Montreal from the UK just for the concert.
It would be a once in a lifetime experience for me (but I hope not!)

Heartbeat City is reminiscent of MWH. I think the poppiness of many Cars

Ivan also sings, "Quit mowing your children down". As any teenager
would tell you (and we've all been there, if we aren't there now), no
child "belongs" to his parents, any more than a woman "belongs" to a
man; nevertheless, with both relationships comes a certain amount of
comittment, and we do come to rely on this comittent as a right owed to
us (Just watch Divorce Court, if you don't believe me :) ). Just the
opposite of these lines lines, then, would also be true: ". . .mowing
YOUR parents" or "pushing YOUR men", for example. . . .
Yours Sincerely,
Wasting Away

Hey Men (and Women),
1. I have noticed that when new members come on line, they almost all
notice that we do a lot of bickering on this site. I don't know if this is
a good or bad thing. I guess that it is bad, but then again we all kind-of
have this bond of loving the best band ever (in my opinion) and so what if
we bicker. I am glad that my favorite band is so obscure and not some
commercial 'success'.
2. I ordered 'Sideways' and 'The Spell' from A&B Online in Vancouver.
Thanks to whoever posted their address on the list. I looked around and
the prices were much less than anywhere else I found.

As an impartial viewer to the concert/survey happenings (as I won`t be
able to go), I find some of the recent opinions on what should be played
absolutely astounding.
I`m not even sure that the survey on the setlist was a great idea,
especially since there has been a lot of arguement as to the results.
Let`s take one step backwards and think about the concept of a private
show by a man whose music is idolised/well-liked by members of this
list. How many artists would even consider taking such step? We
should consider ourselves privileged that Ivan has actually agreed to
do this.
Now onto the setlist. It shouldn`t actually matter whether Ivan is playing
to 10 people or 1,000 - he should have the freedom to choose what he plays.
If he is not comfortable playing a particular song or feels that he really
wants to play another then that`s his choice. I know if I were him and
I was presented with a `set` setlist with no deviation allowed, then my
initial reaction would be to say `Sod it` and call the whole thing off.
How many of you are going to refuse see another person/group live if they
don`t play exactly what you want them to?
You should be treating this as a special event and not as your right to
hear certain material.

Except that you are not Ivan. Ivan has a different outlook than this.
He sees this concert as an opportunity to be with and entertain the
people who have supported him. He is grateful to have fans at all and
doesn't carry that Rock ego that you're expecting. All his songs
include messages that are important to Ivan and if a group of people
request a few then he will play them with honor and pride (and possibly
hope).
How do I know this? Because of the last 16 years I've spent listening
to his music, talking to Ivan directly and doing research on him and his
band. Simply put, I know Ivan's personality. Ivan wants us all to get
along and understand and respect each other.
btw, I accept the set list released a few days ago. It's not identical
to mine but I will enjoy hearing it. In my opinion, it's a good one.
After all, they're all written by a genius!

Somebody mentioned that we are "bickering". I disagree. I think when you
have people that are passionate about something (Mw/oH) you are going to have
disagreements about many issues and such is the essence of life. Sure
sometimes it will get "heated" as far as that can happen on A COMPUTER LIST,
but so what? As long as there are no personal attacks of the "you are stupid"
variety, the "your OPINION is stupid" is fine. In my opinion, anyone who
takes seriously an attack from an anonymous bunch of words on a computer
screen has a whole lot of things that they should be spending time on (mental
stability comes to mind). I for one am extremely grateful to have this
opportunity with Ivan, however, as I said earlier, I have no intention of
driving from Chicago to Montreal to hear Ivan's experimental acid-jazz set
which he thought his closest fans might enjoy in an intimate setting. I agree
with Senz, regardless of YOUR personal feelings, we are NEGOTIATING A
CONTRACT, there is give and take, and it happens every day. IVAN even
negotiates contracts (I know, shocker to all you "arteeest" types out there)
but without a contract there would be no Spell. And rest assured Tox spent
little time worrying about Ivan's integrity, the made sure, first and
foremost, that they could make money. Sorry about the elementary econ lesson,
but oh well.
Cordially,

apologies.
Also, I believe 1997 - 1983 = 14 and not 16. (I'm building a robot

I think that all the bickering I have been reading lately defeats the
whole
purpose of this concert we are trying to arrange. I thought this show
would be
a good way for the "Hats list" to get a sense of unity and purpose
previously
unfelt by us. I thought getting to know one another face-to-face and on
a personal level would help "bridge the gap" between real people and
computer
interface. But with all the arguing and debating going on among members
of
the group, it will be a wonder if we ever really feel that sense of
unity.
Not only that, but all this inner fighting is defeating another purpose
as well -
making new members to the list feel "at home" and welcomed. When I
first
subscribed, the first week I was on, I had to endure a continuing and
lengthy
battle between 2 of the list members, and I must admit it turned me off
a little
bit. Think of those who are just joining us, people who, like us, have
loved
MWH for years. Finally they hook up with us and not only do they find
all
the information and discussion they have been looking for forever, they
also
find evidence of hostility and disrespect. This kind of behavior does
us all a
disservice.
I believe strongly in freedom of speech, but even more strongly I
believe in tact
and respect. Remember the famous words: "A house divided against itself
cannot stand." Think about it in relation to this organization. Think
about it
in terms of trying to organize this concert.
Let's not blow it all with constant bickering.

I agree totally with Wolfgang
Who is this shithead ? Legal issues !!!! Holding the checkbook!!!!. If
I was Ivan and read this I'd cancel the concert straight away, I can't
believe a fan could write anything like that. It's making him out as a
performing monkey. Do you propose we withold payment until after the
show and then reduce his fee by the amount of songs requested he didn't
perform ?
I'm totally against a proposed set list, by all means suggest to Ivan a
few songs we'd like to hear, but under no circumstances should you
impose conditions that he must play certain songs. I really can't see
how you can ask someone to do you a favour, and then start imposing
conditions on him. Its not as though its actually all that much money
once Theatre rental, managers cut, lighting and sound engineers and any
other musicians, etc. have been paid off. And how long will it take to
rehearse songs he's not play'd in over ten years ? Two weeks ? more ? I
think some of you are asking a bit much.
This attitude of 'I've paid my 30 dollars therefore he must play my
favourite song(s)' seems totally wrong to me, espicially as you are
supposed to be his fans.

Ok, regarding the show, I will propose to Ivan to play the 15 most wanted
songs. Those 15 songs are not specialy my choice, but I will recommend Ivan
to play them because the majority of the people want them.
So, I will not FORCE HIM to play thos songs, but to pick may be 10 songs on
15 and play them.
The show is gonna have a "nostalgy" concept. So, I will try to have Stefan

I could be wrong, but as I remember it, this concert idea was started a
while ago based upon this thread:
- how can we pay for the 2fers and bootlegs when Ivan
isn't getting any residuals from them
- didn't he already make money off them in their
original release?
- no, Ivan made virtually no money off of the albums
("not enough to buy a bicycle", as someone put it)
- maybe we could take up a collection for him, or give
him a certain amount per CD?
- no, that's charity, let's instead ask him to do a
concert for us, his closest and biggest fans
I know that we're all itching to see him live; I'm considering flying up
from LA. But this concert was originally to do one thing: support Ivan
as an artist. Please don't be overcome by your greed for "the perfect
Ivan concert bootleg", to the point where you'll put down other list
members who just want to get the show off the ground.
Direct insults or muffled sarcasm, it's easy to take criticism
seriously, and while I realize that intelligent objections are perfectly
at home on a mailing list, could we please try and stifle it for this
thread?
The show was originally to benefit Ivan. Wouldn't it be enough to just
show him the survey, or all the surveys if there are several, and ask
him if he could keep them in mind when he makes up his set list? Col
and Neen's (it was you, wasn't it?) comment on Ivan singing "Twinkle
Twinkle" was right on; he could sing anything for me live and I'd
probably go directly to heaven.
It would be a dream to enjoy a show by Ivan, with the most devoted Mw/oH
fans anywhere. For many of us, this is our first chance to see him
ever. Let's not screw it up with anger or overdeveloped expectations.
Frankly, $30 a ticket isn't that bad. I'd consider $300.
Oh, and one more thing: to the poster earlier who called the "legal
issue" poster a s**thead -- I agree with what you're saying 100%, but
try not to use profanity to say it. I mean, I curse like a sailor too,
offline; but on lists let's try to keep it clean, shall we?

On a lighter note about the concert...
I was wonderig where it was going to take place. I keep reading Montreal,
but I can never be too sure. Also, if it is in Montreal, can someone
please tell me how much airfare to Canada from Las Vegas, NV, USA is?
Also, do I need a passport? These may sound like ridiculous questions,
but, I am only 15 and ca only find so much out on my own. Thank you all

Hmmmmm............... Yes, I suppose there is SOME "bickering" going on
around here. Years ago, Ivan told us "you can act real rude and totally
removed and I can act like an imbecile". It's okay sometimes, but not
when it goes on and on, like with this playlist thing. Like Angie said,
one of the main reasons behind this private show is so that list members
can meet in person for a change. Sure, it would be great if we could
formulate a playlist that everyone positively agreed on, but that's
simply not going to happen. We all have our personal favorites
and there's just too much MWH material to choose from.
Let's not look at this concert from a purely musical standpoint. Ivan's
not actually going to be playing anything we haven't already heard,
right? Now, I know that some of us live far, some VERY far, from where
the concert is to be held, and that the financial investment will be
considerable in order to go. Still, let's not make such a big deal
about not getting to hear every single song we want. Whatever get's
played, it'll be good because Ivan is the one playing it. Although I
won't be able to attend the concert myself, I'd hate to see it get
messed up for anyone just because of a few differences of opinion.
And yes, let's strive to make new list members feel welcome. Back when
I first signed on, there was a particularly nasty series of exchanges.
I decided to wait for things to settle out. They did, and I'm glad I
stayed on, because this list has proven so informative and useful!
Several members have provided me with recordings I'd have had no chance
of getting elsewhere. There's going to be complaining and such once in
a while, no doubt about it, but let's not get TOO hostile. It's
reflects badly on us.

I, for one, am very disturbed by the suggestion that Ivan's not playing
the songs selected by us could become a "legal issue". Francis, please
let the man know that, first and foremost, I am interested in a private
show from him, as oppsed to having a live Wirlitzer to play what I want
to hear. I think the suggestions from the past couple of days are the
most level-headed I've heard: Ivan should use the list as a general
guideline and, based on it, play what he wants to play. Frankly, I am
very excited about the show and I want nothing to jeopardize our plans
-- and threats of legal action, no matter how they were intended, might
do just that! Please, let's calm down and forget about the @@!!##
favotites list, already! I'm sure that Ivan will be as interested to
see the results as we obviously were. I am also sure that he will
realize that we were simply voicing our opinions, not re-writing the
Bible!

It's Saturday night, and the dedication lines at your local radio

this radio station (since during the rest of the week it plays cool
stuff like ABBA, Roxy Music, and T Rex ;-) ), and you think, "Wow,

What song (can be ANYTHING) would you dedicate to Ivan?

here goes:
Fu Man Chu (by Robert Charlebois)
Rock'n Roll Suicide (by David Bowie)
Le Desert (by Raoul Duguay)
Lumieres (by Gerard Manset)

The difference is that the purpose of this show is not to promote his
latest disc.
The difference is that this show is not playing to
10,000 screaming fans.
The difference is that this is a private show that we are organizing.

This is absolutely a special event. Most of us never had a chance to
see Men Without Hats when the songs were new. Most of us will never
have this opportunity again.
What is wrong with telling Ivan that we appreciate his music by
giving him a list of our favorite songs? The fans are putting effort
into compiling a list that represents the songs that mean the most to
us. Are our feelings irrelevant? Wouldn't Ivan WANT to know this
information? When Ingrid Bergman asked Sam to play "As Time Goes
By", did Sam feel injured as an artist?

Actually, I wouldn't say there was anything wrong at all with showing
Ivan the survey list; I would imagine he'd love to see what legacy his
music is creating. However, mandating the music he must play? I
suppose there's nothing totally morally wrong with it, but it just seems
so unnecessary. Are we actually worried that he's going to do nothing
but 18 different renditions of 21st Century Safety Dance :)?
I would think that the show, which is just as much for Ivan's sake as
for ours, should be one which he'll enjoy as well, and I would guess
(although I could be completely wrong) that he'd like the freedom to
develop his own set list. Isn't it likely he'll play the majority of
the audience's favorite songs anyway (seeing as they were so
conveniently listed for him in advance)?
Have faith in Ivan, comrade. He works in mysterious ways, but not THAT
mysterious. :)

So, I would like to know whether there are another videomusics about the
"The Spell". Or better: Is there the "The Spell" video? If it exists,
PLEASE contact with me. I live in a country where there are a few
stuffs about MWH. For example, I never heard musics like "Freeways" or
"Heaven" and I never watch any MWH video (Recently I ordered 2 videotapes
and the copies of the 3CD bootleg).
Here in BRASIL, land of the football and the carnival, MWH is call a
SURF MUSIC BAND because a few people knows the New Wave debut CD's of
this band, only knows the "Adventures of...without hate" and the Sideways.
What the far away countries from Canada that has MWH fans in
the world? Japan? China? :):)
So, Everybody needs to comunicate with everybody.

Hi all, this message is addressed to Myke Carter
I first sent you this message september 11th! I resent it at least 10
times. It always bounce back! So here's a shorter version of my
message...
About your MWH page, you should do something about the text (red on red
is just impossible to read). There is also a small typo in your list of
songs; "Valese d'Eug=E9nie" should read "Valse d'Eug=E9nie".
Bye all,
Claude

Whoah -- wait a minute.
I just checked six different copies of PGTW, and only one of them has
the song listed as "La VALSE D'Eugenie" (I'm omitting the accent because
Hotmail hates them), and that's the American domestic CD release. The
other five (Canadian domestic release cassette, Canadian export release
cassette, American domestic release cassette, American domestic release
vinyl, Canadian domestic release vinyl) all say "La VALESE D'Eugenie".
However, seeing as "valse" means waltz in French, and "valese" means
absolutely nothing, it looks like a typo of longstanding was finally
corrected on the transfer to CD. Either way, if I hadn't looked it up
right now, I would have made the same typo Myke did.
Of course, there is always the possibility that the song really is named
"La Valese D'Eugenie". Perhaps it was intentional...?

No way. It's Valse, not Valese...

Helllllo! (anybody watch Senfield yesterday?)
First a message about the Who's Who list. If you find your name in the
list below, it means I have remove you from the who's who list because I
didn't have confirmation from you that you wanted to stay in. If you
change your mind, or if you just wake up, or if you don't know what the
heck I'm talking about go to:
http://www.total.net/~gigarpus/whoswho_mwh.html and read the easy
instructions.
The "removed" fans are Anthonetta Nel (meaning we don't have a
representant from Africa anymore), Mike Best, Thomas Bieler, Mark
Causer, Chris Handshaw, Jonas Lantz, Fran=E7ois Blawat, Charlie Garbowski=
,
Paul Go, Russ Kemsley, David King, Rod MacQuarrie, Marty McKolskey,
Andrew Pepoy, Ray Peterson, David Richards, Gino Rodeghier, Donald
Stroud, Jim Sustacek, Michael Ward, Adam Webber and Adam J. Weitzman.
Now about the FAQ page. Those of you who visited the page noticed that
there was a litle banner on top of each page to allow fast navigation
between the different sections. You may have noticed that two of the
icons (yellow stripe on pink background and MWH logo) lead to the main
page. I decide to use the MWH logo icon for a different purpose. It will
now lead to a "special feature" (known only to the members of the list
and to the very investigative). I already install one of these features
on the who's who section. Go check it out, it should put a smile on your
face...
Now a little request. The links section of the FAQ page is getting huge.
I would like to add a page (special feature) listing the ten best MWH
site or ressource on the web. Since this thing is highly subjective, I
would like to put it to a vote (oh no, not again!). So send me your vote
directly (not more than 10 URL, sorted from most favorite to least
favorite) with a comment justifying each of your choices. For obvious
reasons, the FAQ page is not eligible! There is no deadline for this
vote. As soon as I have enough results, I'll publish a list (with links
giving access to comments from the voters). The list will after that be
updated with each new vote received.
Thank you for your attention, have a nice week-end
Claude

I think everybody on the list would be more than interested to hear
those songs! (and have a copy on CD). I think Tom Norman spoke with
Colin Doroschuk about a possible release of those tracks. Comments Tom?

I haven't heard anything about this yet. What Colin told me is, He and Ivan WILL
get this out to the fans somehow. If he doesn't get back to us about CD-R bootlegs,
it is becasue they plan to release it "limited edition" on their own label.
All I can verify is, I haven't heard anything yet. But I certainly want one as
much as you do!
Colin did say that the demo of Ban the Game, is exactly like the live "ban the game
II" on the Spectrum show videotape. His two favorites from the demos were Rhythm
of Youth and Treblinka. He was actually humming the beat to Rhythm of Youth. This
sounds like the best song on the demo, very fast beat.
Now I just wish I could actually hear the real thing.
Are you reading this IVAN, please please release this for us. :-O

Subject: (hats) 90s Synth Pop
Date: 04 Oct 1997 13:03:19 -0400 (EDT)
I've noticed a few great synth tunes have surfaced in recent years that
would have been great to hear in the 80s. In fact, when I hear them, they
can actually spark a feeling of 80s nostalgia in me even though the song
, I mean, songs are pure 90s tunes. Ace Of Base makes me think of the
late 80s when M/A/R/R/S, "Pump Up The Volume" and Salt & Pepa's "Push It"
were in the charts, along with The Cure's "Just Like Heaven" and Men
Without Hats, "Pop Goes The World".
Another great new artist that makes me recall the 80s is Donna Lewis.
Hell, I can remember hearing "Macarena" several months before it became
the stupid overhyped dance phenomenon that we all know it now to have been,
and I loved it! It was so kewl to hear great electronic pop on the radio
again!
Then when Savage Garden released their single last April or May, I immediately
had to have it! I just wish the rest of their album was as good.
I would suppose that the only thing wrong with the artists who're making
this kind of music in the 90s is their lack of "good fashion." Everybody's
still wearing shitty clothes and hairstyles. Probably because of the poor
state of music television these days. Today's artists really need a clue
about how to present themselves visually,

Add to that a sense of originality (and self-respect for their art, too I
suppose). I am so sick of hearing the EXACT same sample in a million songs.
For instance, George Michael's new song, I think "Fast Love" and all those
Ace of Base rip-offs.....and they call it their "new" song or "new album".
I personally like "Barbie Girl" (I ingore the lyrics) because it sounds a
little original (musically).

I see your point, although I liked Ace of Base's "It's A beautiful
Life". Whether it was an original idea or not, I'm not sure. (It's
pretty difficult to come up with a totally original idea at the best of
times.) My point about "Barbie Girl" is that it's not a 'cool' song.
No one wants to admit they like it (maybe because it's childish or
rather feminine) but somehow it's topping the charts. I even caught my
(decidedly macho) friend humming it!
It's been awhile since such a song made the charts. Pop Goes The Wold
perhaps? I'm just hoping that the synth friendly climate continues and
allows for some synth friendly bands like .... (do I dare say it?!)

IT's funny to see people who like MWH like also the same other songs.
You mentionned
Savage garden, very good
Donna Lewis, very attractive songs
Ace of base, very good
and more and more

Does this really constitute GOOD synth-pop? Heaven help us all! :)
Actually, a station called the edge started playing Aqua about two
months ago, billing the song as "The Edge Barbie Song." Since the
station believes itself to play an "alternative" mix, the song became an
instant joke with the listeners and D.J.s alike. A few weeks after its
introduction, one D.J. declared that she would "speed up the process" of
it becoming overplayed and proceeded to cue it up for thirty minutes!
Of course, she was nearly fired for this (after all, the powers that be
had deigned to call it THE EDGE Barbie song, so that meant it was cool,
even if no one thought so), but another D.J., in sympathy, did the same
thing the next day and saved his colleague from the axe! (They
couldn't, after all, get rid of the entire staff!) Don't ask me what
this has to do with Ivan, but it did make for an interesting couple of
days in Dallas!

German artist BLUMCHEN is much much better than that group. She is like the new

She is nearly #1 in Germany right now, all synth.

Hi everybody!
First of all, I received very interesting info about MWH pre-history
this week-end. I'll publish it very soon in the FAQ site.
Secondly, I want to remind you that Rational Youth (synthpop Montreal
band from the 80's) have reformed. There first album Cold War Night Life
has been reissued in CD format by EMI Canada (and soon by October
Records in Sweeden). THIS IS THE REAL THING. You can found more about
them in the family section of the FAQ site (Tracy Howe, co-founder of
Rational Youth, played guitar on Freeways) or at there very nice web
page at http://www.rationalyouth.com (their links section alone should
be bookmarked by every serious synthpop fans). If you have difficulties
getting your hands on that "must have" record, join Rational Youth
through their home page, they will be happy to help.
Our lucky friends in Europe will be happy to know that Rational Youth
will be performing live at the Stockholm Synth Festival on november 1st.
More details at http://www.strokemusic.se/festival.htm
More good news, They are working on new material in the classic analogue
technopop style, which will soon be released through Sweden's October
Records.
Now, about the FAQ site; We finally have our South-American
"representative" from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Welcome aboard Marco! Everybody
on the mailing list is invited to vote for the best MWH links on the
web. The actual Top 10 can be consulted at
http://www.total.net/~gigarpus/bestlinks_mwh.html or by clicking on the
MWH logo in the Links section of the FAQ site.
Finally, you may have noticed that there is an invitation on the main
page of the FAQ site to vote for the site as a starting point. By doing
so, you contribute to the remote possibility of the site winning several
thousands exposures of the MWH FAQ site's banner throughout the net.
That would be nice to lure one-time MWH fans back in our growing
"family"!
Take care
Claude

Hey all. I had a great thought! Why don't we all get to gether and write
an Ivan/MWH biography? Think about it, we have all the information we need
to write a novella as it is, if we all research a little bit harder we can
get some pretty neat stuff out there. It could do a great job of informing
others of Ivan & MWH. So, what do you say? Production costs would be
limited since ther are quite a few of us on this list. Also, most of us
have full time jobs, but with this many people, the workload could be
distributed so not everbody does a lot of work. There are also a few of
who are prolly really good writers. Well folks, gimme your input!

Hi Hatters!
I guess I won't be able to afford a trip from Germany to Canada for
IVAN's concert. That's why I haven't voted for any songs: That's the job
of those who will actually attend the concert. But I am very interested
in getting a copy of the video and CD of this concert:
> Colin did say that the demo of Ban the Game, is exactly like the live "ban the game
> II" on the Spectrum show videotape. His two favorites from the demos were Rhythm
> of Youth and Treblinka. He was actually humming the beat to Rhythm of Youth. This
> sounds like the best song on the demo, very fast beat.
> Now I just wish I could actually hear the real thing.
> Are you reading this IVAN, please please release this for us. :-O
... And I think these songs should be on the CD! Shouldn't you at least
ask IVAN to play 'RHYTHM OF YOUTH'? Srange that the title track of my
favourite Hats album was never released on this album! Don't you want to
hear it, folks?

My MWh top ten:
1- Here comes the 90's
2- Hey men
3- On thuesday
4- Lose my way
5- In the name of angels
6- Security
7- Folk of the 80's
8- O sole mio
9- The real world
10- In the 21st century
I think that "Pop goes the World" and "Adventures...without hate"
are the best MWH albuns because this is more elaborated and melodic
than the other albuns.

Hi, glad to know a MWH fan who knows the troubles we've got here in
Brazil. The dificulty to get albums and singles (singles, harder than
the hardest...). And knows our bands. In the middle 80's we had these
good rock / pop bands as RPM ( a kind of Brazilian Technopop in
portuguese, that has reached some sucess) who has only 3 albums ( one is
live). Another band is "Zero" which plays some with the vocalist of RPM,
only one album (something between Technopop and Gothic). And others that
hasn't got any sucess, but are the bests from Brazilian scene: as "Tek
Noir" - The best Brazilian Technopop Band - 2 albums , Alternative and
Destination, they sing in English. Another one is "Harry" (Something
between technopop and EBM), 3 albums and a colection (Harry, Fairy
Tales, Vessels Town and Chemical Archives, all these lyrics are
available at my Home Page) and the best techno-industrial Brazilian band
is "Loop B" - actually is not a band or if you rather a band of only
one. A performer that uses as instruments a wash machine, cars
equipaments, metalics, a car door, stove, and many other stuffs...
If you want lyrics for anyone of these last 3 bands you may download

Subject: (hats) This is soooo embarrassing!

Hi Fellow Hatters!
Sorry to be so lame of late, but been busy busy busy at work. I
have a non-Hats (but at least 80s-Music related), and really really
REALLY embarrassing request, but I figured, we're all friends,
right? You'll forgive me, right? Right??
My aunt, who has Down's Syndrome, occasionally asks for the ODDEST
things for birthday and Christmas presents. One year it was socks.
Another year, it was scented markers. This year, she wants (O, I
shudder) the video of Michael Jackson's "Beat It."
Question 1: Does anyone have this, and would you a) admit it and b)
be willing to either part with it or dub it onto another tape for me?
Question 2: If no one has this (or will admit it), does anyone have
any ideas for where I might find it?
In case you haven't guessed, I am the world's *least* fan of the
Glov=E8d One. ;-)
Thanks in advance for your help, Folk of the 80s!
PS to all in England - weird info request # 2: When is the Trooping
of the Colour? Is it always the 2nd Saturday in June, or a random
date, or how does that work? Mom and Dad are going back to England
and don't want to miss it...
PPS to Saul H - Still checking my mailbox daily - when did you send
it?
PPPS to Moose - THANK YOU!!! It's AWESOME!!!!!! You are my HERO!!!
L8R, T8Rs!!
:-) Laura

I would be very happy if replies to this message were posted to the list
(I think it's general interest and I could put the info on the MWH FAQ

I hate to say it, but I rather like M.J. (Yeah, so sue me!)
I think the "Beat It" video is on MICHAEL JACKSON'S THRILLER...you =
should be able to find it in older video stores (I think it's out of =
print now...I used to have it on Beta, of all things). It should also =
be on the last video compilation that M.J. put together...HIStory =
Part One or whatever it was...?

I went to my P.O. Box today and got my stickers from Francis along with
the cool pic...THANKS FRANCIS!!!! Also I got 'Sideways' and 'The Spell'
from A&B Online in Vancouver. I now have ALL of the Hats Cd's (except
ROY & FOTE3) which I will get soon on the 2fer. Has anyone else noticed
that the lettering on the spines of 'Sideways' and 'The Spell' run the
wrong way. I have over 500 CD's and these are the only 2 like that.
Weird how I got both of them the same day huh??? I understand why
'Sideways' would be like that (ie. sideways), but why 'The Spell'? OK

From: STERLING BARKER

Hi there!
I'd like to introduce myself.
My name is Sterling. I've been a MWH fan since 1983, but it's taken
until now to find any other fans!
You see, I live in Australia (you can stop laughing now), and
unfortunately, the music industry here has been blatently rock-based for
too many moons. Rock is what they know, so rock is what they play. Pretty
sad really. It means that I never here MWH on the radio, and it's next to
impossible to get anything into the country. God bless the internet!
Anyhow, I thought I'd drop a line to say Hi and to let you all know that
I'm here. I found an oasis in the cultural desert!!
Here's a list of what I've been able to grab from Australia and whilst
living in the U.K.: (everything is vinyl unless otherwise noted)
1979 LP Rhythm of Youth - U.S. promo-release.
1982 7" Safety Dance
1982 12" The Safety Dance
1982 7" I got the message - U.K. release
1982 LP Rhythm of Youth
1982 LP Rhythm of Youth - U.K. release picture disc
1983 7" I Like - released in Belgium (I think)
1983 7" Living in China
1983 12" Living in China - U.K. release
1983 cas Rhythm of Youth - U.S. release with different tracks
1984 7" Where do the Boys Go?
1984 12" Where do the Boys Go?
1984 LP Folk of the 80's (III)
1984 LP Folk of the 80's (III) - German release with different cover
1985 cas Freeways - Canadian release
1987 7" Pop goes the World - U.S. release
1987 12" Pop goes the World
1987 cd7" Pop goes the World - U.S. promo
1987 cd7" Moonbeam - U.S. release
1987 12" Moonbeam - U.S. release
1987 LP Pop goes the World - U.S. release
1989 LP 21st Century - U.S. release
1993 cd7" Safety Dance - German remix
1996 cd Collection - Oglio U.S. release
Well that's it. As you can see, I'm missing things. I can't order Sideways
or The Spell, as nobody here has any connections with Canadian exporting.
Can anyone recommend a reliable shop on the internet?
I'd really like a vinyl/cd copy of 'Freeways' (I've played it to death,
because it really works!), or a 7" single of 'Antarctica' (I think). I
believe there's a B-side called 'Inner Surface' on it? Also where can I
get a poster(etc) of MWH to grace the walls of my studio?
Well, it's been nice talking to you all.
I'm feeling really inspired now, so I think I going to put the
'Collection' on and pump it up...
Regards,
Sterling

I would also like to say that Francis and I intended to meet with one =

In a simple sentence, things look good!
Mainly, my purpose for this message is to tell you all that due to

Happily, I am moving to the Burlington, Vermont area to be near some

Just so you'll know, Francis and I are still dedicated to making the

can't keep you all up to date on developments, Francis will.
My departure from the list, you can be assured, is only temporary. I =

you will all remain well until I speak to you again.
Love to all,

First of all, on "Greatest Hats CD", has anyone else noticed a 'little
crackling noise' 9 seconds into Freeways? Is it my CD, or a CD
problem???? Secondly, it has been almost a week since I got "Sideways"
and "The Spell" and I have come to my conclusions. First the good news:
"The Spell" rules! This is a great album. Tracks 3 and 7 stick out.
Now for the bad news: to put it mildly, "Sideways" is not very good.
Now, before you get all worked up, I may warm up to it, but it is
unlikely. Well, I am outta here.

Where is there confusion? What did Angie say that bothered you?
What is the concern that you have to repeatedly announce that you are "in
charge" of the concert? Fine, you are organizing the concert (much
appreciated) with everyone's support and input - Angie is part of everyone
isn't she? If she is willing to devote time to help plan the event, great -
it helps us all.
Francis - I think there are several misunderstandings stemming from the
English to French translation some of us have to make. Let's just be
friends here.
I've really got to go back to the survey "discussion" because it still does
not seem right where we left off - that we require Ivan to play a number of
songs off the survey list. Let's give him the list though just no requests
or demands to play 5 or 10 or 12 of the songs.
I'm sure it's obvious to Ivan, that he'd disappoint and maybe lose some fans
who travel all that way for the concert only to hear songs from _The Spell_,
but that should be his choice. He recognizes that these are some of his
biggest fans from around the world who have made a tremendous effort to come
to the concert. There should be some mutual respect. I'm sure he respects
us, his Hats fans, enough to play those great Hats songs and we should
respect him enough to let him play what he wants to for us.
Although _several_ people have expressed this same sentiment, I believe the
"official" stance of the organizer is still as stated in these last two
messages on the subject -
9/30
---------
I will not tell to Ivan we want the 15 songs, but most of them. It means
that we are ready for surprise, but most of the songs has to be our choice.
10/2
---------
I guess my English is very bad because people make a scene with nothing.
Ok, regarding the show, I will propose to Ivan to play the 15 most wanted
songs. Those 15 songs are not specialy my choice, but I will recommend Ivan
to play them because the majority of the people want them.
So, I will not FORCE HIM to play thos songs, but to pick may be 10 songs
on15 and play them.

At 7:35pm EST tonight (Tuesday Oct 21) MuchMusic played the Superbadgirls
video.
Lots of lips, Ivan's dancers (getting pretty friendly), strobe effects, and
the entire video was like watching a poorly tracking movie. The frames
kept panning across the screen from right to left. I don't know if this
description makes any sense or not, all I can say is it makes it really
hard to watch and left me feeling like the room was spinning! (not unlike
how I feel after dancing!)
Still, with such a great tune it makes a great video.
Later, taters!

After reading so many posts about what I am now calling "The Concert of My
Life", I have revised my initial reaction to the survey results.
I love all of Ivan's work enough to be happy with whatever HE chooses to
play. Sure, some of the "greatest" would be fantastic and I'm sure they
will be played, but I'm no longer hung up on hearing my own favs. As such,
I will not be participating in the second round of voting (nothing personal
Dr. Laura, I just readjusted my philosophy!).
I am just looking forward to the opportunity to see my favourite artist
performing for a select group of his greatest fans. As so many others have
said, this is the type of opportunity that very few fans ever get to even
seriously CONSIDER, let alone actually DO!
So, Francis and anyone else who is working so hard on our behalf, keep up
the fantastic work! I can't wait to meet all of you in Montreal in '98!
Just my latest opinion.

SURE DOES!!!!
I think that friendly competition is a good thing. Now that all of the
fans on this list are trying to outdo one another, this means that we will
all get more stuff, and get to see more shows.
I say, Francis & Angie, keep on going!!!!
And while you are at it, why dont we do this?
The first one to get a copy of the outtakes and unreleased material to me
wins once and for all!!!!! :-)
Its not over between you two until someone talks to TOX or Ivan about
this,
then we will see who the #1 fan really is.
Is it Francis, Claude, Angie, ???? We shall see......
How exciting..... you have got to love this everyone!
Then I can make copies for all of us.
hehe. After all, we ALL have the same goals, don't we.
Montreal '98 or bust.

more information, and to download Ban the Game in 8bit 22kHz mono AIFF

Hi, everyone, it's Angie...I had to spend an extra day in Rhode Island and I
dropped by the library to see if they hade closed my e-mail account and...
apparently, they did not.
At any rate, although Francis is the "official organizer" of the '98 Montreal
Tour, I hope he or SOMEBODY keeps in touch with me to let me know how it is
going. I have given him my new phone number in Vermont. I am really excited to see how much progress we are making and will consider the whole thing a success
once the contracts are signed!!! I have told you before and I will tell you
again, I am devoted to seeing this whole thing come together and I will do
everything I can to make it a reality. I think Ivan deserves to have a look
at the huge worldwide fan base he has maintained, and I can't wait to meet
all of you myself!!!
Personally, I did not know there was any kind of "rivalry" between Francis and I
until I read his list posting about the black clouds. Not a pretty way too
describe what will hopefully be the concert of a lifetime in June 1998. H
However, although this imaginary black cloud has appeared over the heads of
Francis and I, I hope to continue to be able to count on him to get the job d
done. So far his efforts have made me very proud and I am really thankful
that he has been able to take it upon himself to do this for us all. Even
though he is busy with work & family, I am glad to see he is devoting some
spare time to making this dream a reality. I know he wants to see it come
together as badly as you and I do.
I will be back on line as soon as I can get a new account in Burlington. Mean-
while, I will stay in touch with my friends in Montreal and track the pro-
gress of this private show!!!
Au revoir!
Angie ;-)

Hey everybody
On Thuesday of this week I received by air mail the CD "the
Spell" and I think that Ivan in this album decreases musically. Really,
the songs "the spell" and "Open your eyes" are the best of this tittle
because they present more melodical variations instead of other musics
that are so trivial. The album "The Spell"(except these 2 songs) is very
weak..........so I expect the revolutionary Ivan again in the MWH!!!!!!
It was a something different work of Ivan but it doesn't mean that
was a good work!
Waiting your opinion about it...

Well, I have warmed up to 'Sideways' a little. I thought that I would.
Tracks 1,2, and KenBarbieLove are my favorites so far. Two questions
that I would like answered:
1-Why is KenBarbieLove listed as track 7, but is 8 in reality?
2-Anyone else notice the 'scratch' on 'Freeways' on 'Greatest Hats'?
(It's 9 sec. in on the CD).
Thats about it.

Eric,
The Freeways Bootleg CD actually sounds better for that track because of
this.
The bootleg Freeways (euromix) is from a sealed new LP, no scratches,
sounds like CD.
The Greatest Hats version is from an old Freeways LP, thus is sounds like
it came from a record.
Now my question is , "Who has the real studio master tapes, if the record
label doesn't? No one?"
Why are they copying records onto CDs???????
I want to see an official CD release of Freeways that sounds as good as the
2fer (good job Carl) or a Pop Goes the World CD.
Wouldn't this be great????

Performance: I love that word! How about something as simple as
"Montreal Performance 1998" or "Performance: Montreal 1998" ? But MWH
should be somewhere in the name...
I think that having a name for that event is something important. It
would be great to have some material made with the name we'll choose
(T-shirts, etc.).

Well Claudio, opinions are debatable. Here is mine. I think that Ivan's
musical evolution, as showned in his recorded work, has always been for
the better. I don't think the value of a pop song has to be measured
solely on its commercial success or on its ability to fullfill fan's
expectations. Ivan never stayed in a musical style long enough to have
an hat put on him (or a tag). He got us used to expect the unexpected
("Sideways" being the ultimate example of this). "The Spell" falls well
in Ivan's "continuity". It shows an artist still playing with the
different possibilities of the pop genre, with more than interesting
results! Musically, I think it's his most mature work (I'm only talking
about what is available on the market).
I don't enjoy MWH because they use synths; Just because they do plain
good music, with lyrics I can relate to. I also enjoy the fact that they
succeed in proposing me with lots of different things, while keeping
what makes them the Hats...
So Claudio, I'm not telling you that you have to like "The Spell". But
before saying that it is weak, pay more attention to it. You'll see it
is indeed very strong. Now you don't have to like it even if you admit
it is strong, but I do...

Hi!
A while back, someone was asking for stories about reactions to their
MWH T's - I have one now...
Short version: Somebody thought the shirt meant I was a lesbian.
Long version: My friend Diane and I went to the North Carolina State
Fair yesterday, and we were both wearing T-shirts (I was wearing the MWH
one, obviously), with plaid flannel shirts over them (I had a buffalo
plaid, Diane a tartan), jeans, and hiking boots. Dressed down for
slumming at the fair, obviously. We were having lunch, seated next to
each other at a long table, and a couple (man and woman) sat down across
from us. Diane and I had stickers on our shirts that we got from the
Ostrich farmers display, and so we and the couple talked about odd
things that we had eaten (bear, venison, alligator, etc.). The man was
looking at us a bit oddly (Diane told me later), and asked, "So are you
*both* from Florida?" (something that I had mentioned re: eating
alligator). I went on blithely while Diane nearly laughed so hard she
had lemonade coming out of her nose. She explained to poor naive me
later that the man thought that we were *together,* a conclusion which
was probably helped along by my "No Men" shirt!
Well, I thought it was funny!

I came in late to the news, so could someone explain the Ivan concert to

recognised as a 'true' fan to attend (I'd fly from Australia to see the
show if that qualifies me!). Also, you've all been tossing up names for
the show, so here's a few more ideas...
'Head for the Hats'
'The Hat Stand'
'Ivan unusually large Hat' (a terrible play-on-words there...sorry)
'Hats all Folks' (another bad joke)
'Man Without Hat'
Actually, after having anouther look at those ideas, they're all pretty
crap. Sorry.

First of all, I would like to apologize for my earlier comments
regarding 'Sideways'. The album is starting to grow on me. I never
like albums when I first listen to them, and this one was no different,
however I now like it and in a couple of more weeks it could become a
favorite.
Secondly, there was a lot of talk about the Aqua CD on this list a
couple of weeks ago. In my opinion the CD kicks butt. It is REALLY
GOOD! For those of you who don't have it I would rate it as a strong
reccomend.
Thirdly, I am in charge of the whole Montreal Show and all further
correspondence regarding this show should be addressed to ME ONLY. JUST
KIDDING!!!!
Fourthly(?), I have lost interest in my 'Men Without Hats' site index
and am probably going to 'pull
it' soon. If anyone wants to use the animated GIFS or links, take them
soon. The F.A.Q. site is MUCH better, and I don't really have the time
