I was just sat in the bath contemplating the pit stop strategy for the next round of the Sony PlayStation F1 Grand Prix (whadjamean you ain't got a Sony? - ask Santa!) when I realised that my life was not complete without a copy of the MWH video! I'm sure you can understand... Well, can someone do me a UK version - or if someone in the UK has already got one can they lend it to me for a couple of days so I can duplicate it several times (just in case someone else wants a copy). Answer direct to me please... thanks awfully :-) Well done to JR for getting the CD bootleg out there. I'm annoyed that I just didn't have the time to get things done myself, so I'm glad that someone else picked up the baton and ran to the finish line - and wasn't disqualified for taking stimulants (or that was JR's story anyway!). For anyone who missed out on the first batch (I know only 50 sets were made) - I should have the CDs and a Mac copy of the artwork soon, courtesy of JR, so I'll probably be able to do some more copies for anyone who wants them. I'll post prices etc if anyone is interested. Anyway, must dash as everyone wants christmas presents this year, especially the young'n's (not mine thankfully) - their tastes in toys gets more expensive by the minute - have you noticed that? What a treat to be able to see and hear all this (unfortunately) rare stuff. "In the 21st Century" is just a stellar video, and "Sideways" only reaffirms my belief that MWH were ahead of their time. That video looks more like something from today than 1991 (while scraggly-haired, t-shirt-wearing, low-slung Les Paul-playing youth are common in videos today, that was not the case in '91!). The first concerned '80s new-wave act Men Without Hats; the second read as follows: "Warthog delivers a rough but listenable audience recording of Metallica's Motorhead tribute set at the birthday of Lemmy Kilmister on Live at Lemmy's Birthday Bash 1995 (Los Angeles 12/14/95). This disc is filled out with 10 demos and rehearsals from band's self-titled album recorded in the summer of 1990." It should be pointed out that this is not an "official" release, and therefore should not have been mentioned in the same breath as the Canadian Men Without Hats album; in fact, it was a leftover not from "Collector's Corner," but rather our "Going Underground" column. In other words, it is a "gray-area" recording - legal only in some parts of Europe. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Regardless of the reason, I think the bit about "...should not have been mentioned in the same breath..." is a classic! If you look at a CD-R thats been cut already, looking from the middle out you'll see a colour change. The inside bit is the actual data (if you look _really_ carefully you'll see the lumps where the 1's and 0's are actually cut - everything is stored in 16-bit digital remember!) whereas the outer area (usually darker) is the virgin section. This is all different to 'normal' CDs as these are stamped on a press (from a master copy) and the data spread over the whole disk - that's what I read somewhere anyway :-) Most LP sized disks can take up to 74 minutes of stereo sound, some even go to 78 minutes but the recommendation is not to put more than 630Mb of data on, which in my book of "10Mb = 1 minute stereo" doesn't really compute properly. I've actually cut an audio disk from my Mac that was 72 minutes so things are all wierd in this digital world of ours... Danny - I wouldn't try adding material if I were you! It might work but it really depends on the machine you're using. Disks are sometimes written in 'sessions' ie built up over several cuts of the disk - Macs can usually read these type of disks, maybe PCs can as well (inferior stuff those though ;-) but on the Toast software that I use to write disks it states that most normal CD players can't read multi-session disks so you would only be able to get access to the first session on the disk - the important MWH stuff though! I've got some aborted disks round here somewhere so I'll give it a go tomorrow and let you now... Henning and Kahlil - JR has sent me (posted last Saturday but still not received!) a copy of the 3 original disks, so as he's done the first 50 I may be in a position to duplicate another batch of CDs! I'm trying to get a price on a bulk order of blank disks but things here in the UK are still quite expensive. The latest price is 5.25UKSterling which is about 7.50USDollars each, and if you add the cover printing costs then it'd work out more expensive than JR's originals. I'll keep the list posted on that one as I know that several more people want a copy. As for the other tracks that weren't on the original 3 disks, well I suppose I might get around to releasing the follow-up before the end of '97... more live, a few different mixes etc Anyway, back to Wang Chung's CD Points On The Curve... First of all, put me down as another person who'd like a copy of the bootleg CD's if anyone is making more. I missed them last time. As I understand it, the CDs are green for the following reason (I could be wrong on the details): The data side of the CD is coated with some kind of organic polymer material, which is green. The label side is coated with gold. When the data is written to the CD, the laser burns through the organic polymer layer, so that the gold layer shows through. In this way the CD can have alternating spaces of reflection and absorption that translate to 0's and 1's when read with a conventional CD player. ROY Live: This one nearly made me weep! My favorite MWH tune, Things In My Life, finally on a CD...and what a beautiful rendition of it as well. I also found it novel that Ivan repeated the titles of the songs after (almost) each one. And the quality puts most of my retail CDs to shame!
