From: "thuggy666" Subject: (klf) Run-out groove Date: 01 Dec 2001 16:20:24 -0000 Me again, Just did a quick look at the run-out grooves on a few other LPs I'd picked up in recent months and noticed that it has " ROCK 23 " on the front and "" on the back of Brilliant's "Kiss the Lips of Life" LP. Don't know why the stars are different on the front and back, but Jimmy is wearing a five pointed star medallion in the photo on the back of the album too. Just mindless trivia... I know... With the number of bootleg copies no doubt being sold on eBay (I don't look that closely at many of them) I figure people need as many quick pointers as they can get. The cover is a better bootleg than with the Shag Times release. The big logos are good photographic copies. However, the writing on the edge of the sleeve is bolder on the bootleg, and uses a slightly funny font. (The question mark in particular has a weird 'hook' to it.) The writing along the bottom of the front and back has also been retypeset and is bolder on the bootleg. Font differences means that it says "The Sound of Mu(sic)" on the original, and "The Sound of Mu[sic]" on the bootleg. On the back (the mostly black '1987' side), where it says "A KLF Communications Company", the KLF in a diamond logo has almost disappeared on the original because the white lines are so fine. The bootleg is actually a lot clearer. The small 3D pyramid blaster logos on the front and back have lightning bolts over the pyramid on the original. These are missing on the bootleg. The LPs themselves are the real giveaway though. The bootleg has been totally retypset in the same more bold font with squarer parentheses. Also, the bootleg has a typo, "ALL SOUND O9N THIS RECORDING.." and says "331/3 RPM", instead of using a 'proper' one-third symbol. Original has "MPO JAMS LP 1 A" and "MPO JAMS LP 1 B" written by hand on the run-out grove. Bootleg is stamped "JAMSLP 1 A" and "JAMSLP 1 B" by a machine. And suprise suprise, just as I thought about the fact there might be The KLF, the presenter said "We'll be hearing from...and The KLF a little later on". So I got the VCR ready and waited to tape it. The only bad thing was they destroyed the video by running information about world events that happened in 1991 along the bottom of the video so bits out of The White Room on the video are cut off and can only be seen sometimes, and they didn't even play the full video :(. "3:am Eternal", "Last Train To Trancentral", "Grim Up North", "Justified and Ancient" and "The White Room" all appeared in '91. All were top 10 in the appropriate charts. > In the second part he played The KLF & Tammy Wynette - Justified & > Ancient (mentioning that this got to No. 2 (I thought this got to No. > 1?) J&A was a Christmas #2, never got to #1- held off the top spot by the re-release of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody". I was reading on another list that EMI raised a few eyebrows by releasing Queen's "Greatest Hits" a few weeks before Freddie Mercury died, because they knew his health was failing and they figured if they released it in advance it wouldn't seem to be in bad taste (whereas releasing it straight after his death would look worse), and would just be on sale in time for the Christmas boom. They were also planning to rerelease "Bohemian Rhapsody" before he died. This was mentioned because apparently (I haven't checked this) EMI put out a George Harrison 'greatest hits' compilation a few weeks ago, probably knowing that it was only a matter of time... they're also planning a George Harrison Christmas single... sound familiar? > and that earlier in the year they had done 3AM Eternal and got to No. > 1 with it). That's true. From the above list, only "3:am Eternal" actually reached the top spot. "LTTT" and "J&A" were both number twos, in the chart sense of the phrase. > The only bad thing was they destroyed the video by running information > about world events that happened in 1991 along the bottom of the video > so bits out of The White Room on the video are cut off and can only be > seen sometimes, and they didn't even play the full video :(. This is not correct. While there are indeed two Best of compilations, the first was released in 76, the other came out early 90s. The last album released under Harrison's name was a remastered All Things Must Pass in Jan, tho I believed it was reissued as a standard edition in Oct. He did, however, record a much publicized track with Jools Holland which came out a couple weeks ago on Hollands "Small World Big Band" cd. The song dealt with Harrison's battle with cancer and was published under RIP2001 Ltd. Only a matter of time.... > they're also planning a George Harrison Christmas single... sound familiar? This is true. I've just read that they plan on reissuing My Sweet Lord as a charity single. Harrison had been working on a new album for the last two years (so where this idea that he was doing it 'secretly' came about I have no idea) and was compiling an Anthology of unreleased stuff as well. Date: 17 Dec 2001 15:12:53 +0100 Hi! Yesterday evening I accidently listened to some techno-dance show on a local radio station. The DJ played some more or less (more less) good songs and then suddenly I heard the first bits of Whitney Houston telling that she wanted to dance with somebody (not me, obviously)... It was a kind of jungle breakbeat mix with the original vocal samples. But no chords, no melody - nothing! Simply boring as hell. And then I thought of the Jams' interpretation of that track back from 1987. What a great sound and this 'remix' still would have fit into this dance show from 2001! I was in a Virgin Megastore yesterday and on the in-store radio they played a version of "Frontier Psychiatrist". Now I might just be going mad or imagining this, but I've heard "Frontier Psychiatrist" quite a lot and this version was ever so slightly different- it sounded like about half of the vocal samples had been re-performed, by actors attempting to sound like the original samples, who sounded similar but not identical. Or maybe what I heard was the 'original', and the version on the CD and video is the rerecorded one with new actors? Or maybe I was just imagining that it sounded different because I heard it in a record store rather than at home, but I was fairly sure it was different. Meanwhile I picked up the new Avalanches "Electricity EP", more of the same sample-heavy light beatfest. Nice. The original CD pressing of the album in Australia (the first 10,000 copies) is substantially different from subsequent pressings (including the double vinyl) and all foreign releases. Most of the differences are in Frontier Psychiatrist -with members of the band re-voicing or re-playing what were originally samples- but there was a fair degree of sample replacement elsewhere on the album, too. One track -Tonight May Have To Last Me All My Life- was actually retitled (to the first word only) as a mark of the reconstruction done on it. My guess is that you were hearing the original version for the first time, rather than the modified one. > Meanwhile I picked up the new Avalanches "Electricity EP", more of the > same sample-heavy light beatfest. Programme Date: 22 Dec 2001 22:40:01 -0000 Hi! I would first like to say a big thanks to everyone on this list, for lots and lots of things, really. Been on the list for quite a while now, (I joined in the middle of a FTP password flame war thing, forgot what it was all about). Anyway, found this in a copy of "Broadcast" trade magazine on page 8, 21/12/01 issue: "Play UK has commissioned a 10-part music series called 'They Came From'. The series looks at the different regions of the UK and the bands that emerged from them, such as The KLF, Echo and the Bunnymen and The Farm from Merseyside. ...and features archive material with each episode culminating in a live performance....the 10x60-minute series was produced by BBC Entertainment. It is due to air on 5 January." and that's all I can find at the moment, Broadcast's site at www.produxions.com doesn't mention it, and www.playuk.tv seems not to be available. Evidence that samples were taken from this film can be heard at the end of WTIL (Live Verson) where portions of Brian Eno's soundtrack for the film can be heard under the dialog. Another source is rumoured to be the hard-to-find vinyl LP 'Journey To The Moon' released by Pickwick International (cat no MOON 1) in the UK in 1969. This LP covers the Mercury and Gemini missions as well as Apollo 11. I`m sure that quite a lot of audio/video footage is also available on space related CD ROMS or included as clips on multimedia encyclopaedias as well as being available for download via the net. I've got to help some students knock up a multimedia CD ROM based on the concept of Space in the next fortnight and will be hunting high and low myself from various stuff that I've got laying about to try and cobble something together and might try and include a few KLF/Cauty space samples on it somewhere as part of the eclectic contents. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info klf" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email klf@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # KLF discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?klf ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: guysmiley@breathe.com Subject: (klf) osymyso Date: 28 Dec 2001 11:49:15 BST Not sure if anyone has heard of this guy, or mentioned him before here, but if you get the opportunity, take a listen to his track "intro-inspection" it really is amazing... http://www1.icrunch.com/features/leftfield/osymyso/ he mentions the klf as an influence ! laters neil # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info klf" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email klf@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # KLF discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?klf ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Dark Eyed Kid" Subject: Re: (klf) osymyso Date: 28 Dec 2001 18:11:03 -0000 His BBC Breezeblock is also worth a listen. In a 22-minute programme that lists at least 7 different bands, you're averaging less than 3 minutes per band once intros and titles are out of the way. I will of course be watching it, but I'll be surprised if it's anything other than a selection of old archive clips gelled together by somebody who talks too much. What I'd *really* like to see- but which I very much doubt will be included- would be a new interview with Bill or Jimmy (or both of them together) looking back on the KLF from today's perspective. Absolute climax this sunday was the soundmixshow of KLF who erm, played their hit What Time Is Love quasi semi live. For this opportunity it is better to change WTIL into "What Time Is The End Of The Show?" because during the show one of the KLF-ers thought it was reasonable to clean up the mess and leave... But ofcourse that´s rather easy when there is a tape running... Don´t know if the audience likes these kind of shows for a knock-down price but the KLF sure liked it... During one of their public appearances, as headline act at the DMC Convention, the notorious pranksters decided to 'liberate' the organiser's equipment and re-distribute it to the audience. Reports say they were coming to the end of a 23 minute version of their hit 'What Time is Love?' when Bill Drummond decided to give the Technics decks, mixers and other sound gear away to fans in the crowd. Organisers were forced to step in to try and retrieve the equipment as security staff clashed with Drummond himself. I ended up getting #1 somehow, so I feel a bit lucky. First of all I must say that this is a very worth while addition to any KLF collection. Hats off to C-row and Kuta! There wasn't one mix I didn't like. In particular I liked LTTT, 3AM, Madrugada Eterna, and White Room. I really liked the cover artwork too. It reminded me of the Australian WTIL wickerman cover. There's a small down side. The print quality of the insert could have been better, "Remodeled" is misspelled, and the tray card measurements are a bit off. I don't have the CD with me but I think the lettering on the spine is upside down too. I'm very picky about that sort of thing so I doubt many people will even notice. It still looks very natural setting alongside any legit KLF release. If anyone is interested, I have a pdf file containing all the proper measurements for CD, insert, and tray card sizes.
