My sentiments (and sympathies) to the guys pretty exactly, I have big questions about whether we'll get to enjoy at long last a brand new, chock-full-of-fresh-material (of course even if it's been hammered out first on stage live, as they enjoy doing) album sometime, but I'm still so grateful for the Expo 2000 disc, and I've been in the mood to simply enjoy all already that they've offered. To me Kraftwerk is sacred, and it's a miracle that they have been able, however they've managed to have been, to be around for this long. They always sound so Fresh, in every recording! - by the way, didn't 'The Model' only make it as big as it did in the UK? Ehh, I doubt it charted really in the US. This EMI (maybe) scandal you speak of sounds bizarre. Wouldn't put it past anyone though. If the gents still feel shit on despite their own control they posess over their hard work, owning the copyrights themselves, that's only how backwards the world (CRITICS) is keeping itself. Not Kraftwerk's fault. They shouldn't ever have to bend or change mindsets for any snobby cliqueish guitar-oriented popular sect. I need Kraftwerk. I listened to it in the shop and when I heard it, I stormed out of there! Secondly, I agree that the German Computerwelt is miles better and has much more effort than Computer World, but somehoe I like Mini Calculateur better than Taschenrechner; its last minute of instrumental is more flowing and 'lekker' in comparison to TR and reminds me a bit of It's More Fun To Compute. Or maybe I'm having too much weed here in NL... Thirdly, KW has some pieces which in my opinion are very warm indeed. Ohm Sweet Ohm is beautiful, nobody argue or I'll be angry. Then there's Kohoutek Kometenmelodie 2, which is almost romantic... Fourthly, there's a KW sample on the Chemical Brothers' Exit Planet Dust; the intro of Ohm Sweet Ohm (the word Ohm gets looped) on The Brother's Gonna Work It Out. Anything else...nah. Sorry. Komputer have succumbed in the easiest, cheesiest and commercial resources; the behaved shamelessly plagiarism and the repetition of the formulas which led Kraftwerk to success. No winks sent with inventiveness or intelligence to hide the evidence of insipid and insignificant resources. They waste a great gear. And it only entices to yawn. The world of music is too huge to linger in imitations so little (or nothing) rewarding. Despite the theatricalities it does not stop being a copy that uses identical ideas and the same instruments, but disguised by their nerve. Before resorting to the plagiarism, there are other equally interesting ideas to satisfy to an audience who is eagered for new tracks from Kraftwerk. The obsession to sound just as the German Quartet roams every minute and become to cause boredom. Perhaps to brand their music as plagiarism is for them a praise. I disagree with this. The english version is overall more smooth. The german is mixed rougher. This might be accountable because it would have been remixed for the language anyway. The first time I heard 'computerwelt', I didn't know what to make of it.. it's so very different. 'valentina', 'looking down on london', 'perfect pop band' are all well written and sung. They are quite capable of completing one of the more original tributes through a literal copy rather than simply imitate. To this end, they took the classic man machine era concepts and composed new material. 'synthesizer' is absolutely intended to sound like a shadow of 'neon lights' and is executed elegantly. The elements are so easily played together by this group. They definately have enormous talent. I wonder what a non-tribute album would have sounded like? Kevin Lux has a similar sound, and we all enjoy his re-creations. There is no difference here. Komputer simply completed an albums worth of tribute. I especially enjoy driving to 'world of tomorrow' so I KNOW that it has merit. :) .b Quoting Der Automat : > I disagree with you. I overstepped.. It's all in how you interpret the concept of tribute perhaps. Personally, I determined this by the reflection that I see.. "our clothes are immaterial, our songs are quite minimal" from 'perfect pop band', the stark, monotone singing, obvious elements. Then there are REALLY obvious elements 'oh, synthesiser', 'bill gates', the neo-futurist expressionism in the visual art as well as the lifting of common themes from 'spacelab', 'metropolis', hell, the whole man machine album. I suppose it really comes down to the appriciation of the work put into the work. Art immitating art immitating life. I say, "they are purposfully making a statement, and kraftwerk is in the sentence." If not, can I still keep the album in good conscience, Soleil? ;) .b btw - I would never confuse the two - 'electric dimension' is one of my favorite cds. I discover new things each listening still.. I take it then that this bootleg has the recording at the right speed? Some bootlegs were made from the BBC Radio 1 broadcast, which was played on air far too slow (it sounds like a 48 kHz DAT recording played back at 44.1 kHz). christine on '15 Minutes of Fame': > Curious: > -So then do you like it, or are you irritated? > At first (the operative phrase being At First), I thought, oh boy, > this sucks. By contrast, my initial reaction was pleasant surprise (bearing in mind the criticism the track has attracted from some on this list), since the chorus makes for quite a bouncy pop track. But it is certainly backwards-looking (stylistically and indeed thematically - wasn't 'Showbusiness' enough?), and, far more importantly, the lyrics are more suited to a school rock band than a professional musician of Karl's standing. IMAO someone in the record company should have had the integrity to mention this before the single was released - or perhaps the lyrics really do sound OK to a German audience? Karl's vocal styling is also far too - how shall I put it - "Europop" ;-) for my taste on this particular release, but that is a matter of personal taste or outlook of course... If you like that one, your next purchase should be the one which came immediately after, 'Equinoxe'. (Both of these were _very_ important early electronic music experiences for me!). Ob. Kraftwerk: for the first time in quite a while, this evening I had a listen to my favourite Kraftwerk album, 'Radio-Activity'. It's now about 25 years old but the kraftsmanship still astonishes me. The transitions from ethereal electronic tones to synthetic pop are still unsurpassed by anyone, I think. On this listen for some reason the Beech Boys influence on Kraftwerk was clearer to me than usual, particularly on 'Airwaves', which is surely their answer to 'Good Vibrations'. The influences for 'Ohm Sweet Ohm' still escape me though... The Beatles? German drinking songs? Easy listening? Great stuff, anyway. Is this honest? I don't think so. Furthermore, in an interview with Komputer published in the Debug magazine they said: "Why is Komputer spelled with a K? A homage to Kraftwerk? The subject quickly turns a rondezvous into a less than sexy tone, thus removing the sex from the human. Well, maybe not.. Humans in space is always a cool topic. 'komputer pop' seems to originate from other sources to me. Why would anyone ever lie in a press report? has kraftwerk? komputer might be manipulating the media, similar to other artists.. It's obvious that they are reconstructing a form of the melodies and sounds of 'man machine' and 'neon lights'. However I look at it, they really like kraftwerk. Far be it for me to tell anyone to do otherwise and tribute them however they see fit. This appears to be a subject which we will not agree on and that's almost the most overstated topic argued yet. .b Quoting Der Automat : > > I'm pretty sure this discussion has already been argued in here for a long > time. > > fecalfunhole wrote: > > > And I have to add that although known primarily for their kraftwerkian > > stylings, they have also developed their own in the > > process. Is this honest? I don't think so. It would be honest if they listed Kraftwerk as an influence. To defend Komputer though, I have to point out that everything you list is just a superficial similarity, and can't really be counted as copying. - The vocoder in "Bill Gates" sounds nothing like the one on "The Man Machine". It's used differently as well. The TMM lyric is melodic, whereas the BG one is monotone. - The Wot theme doesn't remind me of The Model. - Valentina does not sound much like The Model either, and is a pretty good song that stands on its own. - I do agree that Komputer Pop is a bit lame, but it doesn't tell the same story as Computer Love. - Again, LDoL doesn't remind me of TdF. To say they're bad for copying a riff is ludicrous. All that is is sampling - and it's one I didn't even notice in this case. > http://www.mutelibtech.com/mute/komputer/komputer.htm, there they don't > count Kraftwerk as one of their influences. It is possible that they arrived nearby from a different origin, but it is much more believable that KW got stuck in their heads at some point and they won't acknowledge it. > There's no offence meant, but I do not see any merit in a song which makes > one enjoys driving. Firstly, I got a CD-R of Jean Michel Jarre; a bootleg called Rarities. I really think that anyone who hasn't got his early stuff and are fans must really have this. It has the albums Deserted Palace (1972), Les Granges Brulees (1975) and 4 singles 1969/75. As advanced and as influential KW are/were, listening to Deserted Palace made me see the advanced bit in a new light; there's early templates of Oxygene and on the singles Erosmachine there's a part you'll recognise in Chronologie 2. Yahoo! Back to KW. Apparently there's also a sample of The Robots on Fatboy Slim's 'Give The Po' Man A Break' but I never bothered listening to it. Also, can someone tell me more about Will Smith starting out by using Musique Non Stop for one of his remixes? Another question. What German CD ordering site's best for ordering the new KW single? I want to have it ASAP and in contrast to the previous 2 singles and 2 of my German albums, I don't want to travel to Germany just for a single again... Final note: On Friday I marginally updated my homepage; mostly my index.html but hey. If you click on http://www.mattwerk.com then you'll see I added a download MP3. It's The Model (Tokyo 98). Sorry Oh Jay but I felt that everyone going to my site must have it. When I have time I'll add something that either nobody has, or that is very rare anyway. Hey, maybe YOU the KW fans can determine what you want! So send me some requests and the most popular one will be on Mattwerk in MP3 for download... Take care out there, wherever you are. Perhaps Der Automat forgot to mention that "Oh Synthesizer" by Komputer is actually "Neon Lights" only with different lyrics. The EP's art cover on which that song was released ("Komputer EP") has also striking similarities to the "Computer World" sleeve. If you can't get a hold of that CD, open Napster and download that mp3, you'll be amazed on how hypocrite a band can be. I have to agree that one doesn't deserve defense. All they did was change the lyrics and samples and make minor changes to the beat and melodies. It's a good remix of Neon Lights ignoring the new lyrics. Now if only they would admit it. DE ;-) I did mention it last month: The countless German references reflect the group's fascination with the classic Kraftwerk sound. After "Sterilization" (Dataphysix, 1997) was included on several mix albums, DJ Hell contacted Dopplereffekt and released the "Gesamtkunstwerk" compilation through his International Deejay Gigolo label in 1999. Their few maxis, a kind of chipped softcore version of Kraftwerk, is not only a brilliant moment in the evolution of the Detroit electro (the techno bass), but also they suit as a glove to the sleazy philosophy of IDG. "Cellular Phone", critical view of the technology. "Plasiphilia 2", cult to the fetishism and its historic lyric "I wanna make love to a mannequin". The lo-fi materilization of some electro pieces that are drum, bass and robotic melody, the bargain science-fiction sound ("Voice Activated"). fecalfunhole wrote: > http://www.idrive.com/idrivegamma > I have posted a taste of Dopplereffekt for anyone who is interested. > Perhaps try the Joy Electric if you have time. idrive is hosting - you > might have to do some trickery. Unfortunately the only version of this song I've been able to find is the Fatboy Slim remix, which isn't the one I want. Well, nothing really interesting in this program about KW, they simply talked about the band History and they also put some extracts of KW music from Kraftwerk 2 to Man-machine. If you understand french and still want to hear this program, it's archived in RealAudio format until next Thirsday. Click here: http://www.radio-france.fr/chaines/france-inter/lenoir/audio.php And on the page , click on the program "Jeudi 9 Novembre" to hear it. Again, there's nothing new / special, but it's so rare to hear KW stuff on the radio, particularly some sound clips from early KW. I discovered something fascinating. I'm not sure how to explain it. Go here: http://www.aquariusrecordssf.com/cat/foundsoundsfieldrecordingsandtruelifeodditi es.html And read the description of the CD entitlted "The Conet Project". It's a boxset of recordings of various "numbers stations" from Europe, which are shortwave radio stations that broadcast nothing but synthetic voices speaking sequences of numbers all day. Listen to the realaudio clips at the end of the paragraph. Eerie, isn't it? The sampled voices quickly take on an inhuman quality. Is this for real? Have any of the European werkers on the list ever encountered a numbers station on the radio? I bought the 4-disc set and it's the strangest thing. It reminds me of "Numbers" by Kraftwerk, and I have to wonder if they didn't get some ideas from stumbling across a numbers station on the shortwave band one day. Different stations broadcast the voices in different languages, genders, inflections. The overall effect of extended listening is a sort of "paranoid ambience". Sure, there aren't so many of them broadcasting these days, but they were abundant during the Cold War, and could be heard all over the short wave bands. > I bought the 4-disc set and > it's the strangest thing. That's an interesting idea; I think you may be right! 'Radio-Activity' showed that Kraftwerk had listened a lot to short wave radio, so they would have heard a lot of these number stations. Anyway, on the Mattwerk MP3 vote, you have only a couple of hours left to vote for this week's rare MP3 of your choice. I expect about 3 hours. The voting so far is better than last week with 2 votes, the leading song so far is Ruckzuck from the album. So please send me a vote or two and you can have that rare KW song you've wanted for ages! Alternatively maybe some early JM Jarre; I'm pretty infatuated by the pre-Oxygene albums I recently got copied. As far as MP3s go, I recently got TDF Original 12" which wasn't on the CD single; it's the extra long version of the 7" song and mighty fine. Just giving you some examples... So until voting's closed, MP3 for next week will be Ruckzuck. The MP3 of The Model Live 1998 will be removed as I have no more space on my site... Take care! Date: 18 Nov 2000 09:46:40 +0100 I have just received my new Kraftwerk Rucksack ordered from Klingklang.com. It's totally ace! The quality of the rucksack is really very good and the logo is nicely embroidered on the back. Sure to make the heads turn in the neighbourhood... You can also narrowly fit in a few 12" records and you mobile phone in the front. The company producing these rucksacks is called Nastrowije Potsdam and have a website at www.napo.de. Go directly to http://www.napo.de/ushop/prodthtm/napo_bags2.html where you can see some exactly similarly styled bags but with other embroidery. The price for a bag there is DEM 34.99, whereas the same KW Bag at Klingklang.com ist DEM 78/EUR 40, so there is no denying that our KW Jungs are generating a nice profit on these... (even though post and package seems to be included). But we knew that KW know how to make money before, at least since they received DEM 400.000 for their musical contribution to the Expo 2000.. Anyway go on and treat yourself for a great xmas gift! Hope you found this info helpful.. Date: 20 Nov 2000 10:24:52 CET Hi, yet another weekly piece from Mattwerk. Finally my E2K remix CD has been despatched, so I can't wait for that mutha. If only we had a new album in the pipeline...or is it? Just think, normally a band releases singles and then the album. Well, normal bands anyway. We've had a single in Germany, a slightly different one in UK and now a remix version. Would this mean we get the album promised to us? Anyway, strange life when you're a KW fan. Oh yeah, Kraftwerk got a mention on BBC Ceefax! On 'The vibe', a kind of forum on teletext, someone asked about getting into KW music, should he try it out or not as he heard it was good. I'm going to e-mail a reply, to get the name and reputation of KW mentioned to the Isle, if you want to as well then the guy's called himself LLL and the e-mail address of the page is: backbeat.ceefax@bbc.co.uk Otherwise, nothing up in the Mattwerk world other that life in Holland sucks more by the day and in 3 weeks time I'll be in South Africa for 4 1/2 blissful weeks... Take care KWers! Matt http://www.mattwerk.com ps. I have a complete copy of the rare JMJ cd-r Rarities, which has his officially unavailable 2 pre-Oxygene albums and 2 ancient singles. I missed 1 track but got it eventually so if anyone fancies it per trade...it's hot stuff! They had a feature on trains but obviously who gives a toss. Well I did, because suddenly Trans Europe Express started playing! I swear this is true. They only played the first few seconds but even that was done a few times. I couldn't believe my ears! For half an hour I sat there like a retard, mumbling and giggling to myself "Kraftwerk was on Blue Peter..." Also, I put a comment on BBC's The Vibe and promoted Kraftwerk by saying they're the electric Beatles and they ripped off TEE for Madonna. Just wait for the anti-Matthew comments to come in from all those Madonna lovers... And I'm sure Gay Ritchie will have something to say too :) Oh well, life never dull in the KW world... I also got the new Expo Remix CD; I like Orbital's version best, then Kevorkian's. As for the others, nothing special but all in all if you listen to the whole CD in one go then it's nice. A bit like Tone Float in that respect! Although I'm sure that wasn't the intention :) Anyway, take care... Together they have created a great elektropop single far away from Bartos' horrible last album by 'Elektric Music', back to electronic roots of first album 'Esperanto'. 4 different versions of the songs are included and re-launch the name Karl Bartos in true electronic music. In the new (Dec. 2000) issue, Ian Penman reviews Wolfgang Fluer's autobiography 'I Was a Robot'. The tone of the review is typical for 'The Wire' when they don't like something: Fluer is accused of "baroque narcissism", having a "supremely grating - prissy, preening, pseudo-philosophical - tone" (that's pretty rich coming from 'The Wire') and of being "an ass". While helping my 4 yr old son to decide what he would want you to bring him for Christmas I came across those small "kiss" "psycho-circus" figures in a toy shop, and also figures for the Beatles (in Yellow Submarine Style). If possible, would you mind putting Kraftwerk Robot figures in my socks placed by my window? (Since we live in an appartment and we don't have a chimney, I placed the sock by the window for your convenience, please, don't use the little chimney, it is the gas heater's). If that is not available (for unknown reasons because I would gladly buy the whole collection complete with a mini Kling Klang studio as would mostly KW fans I know of), please consider bringing a new full Kraftwerk album I've been expecting since 1991. If possible with new songs (I've been eagerly waiting for one since 1986). If none of my wishes have chance of coming true, then please bring understanding and peace of mind to all people, which seems to be much more feasible. Thank You Santa. Eduardo. P.S. Dear Santa, it is now spring in the southern hemisphere, I wouldn't advise you to wear that heavy clothes we usually see your poor impersonators wearing on the streets in front of stores and in shopping malls, even when we are experiencing 28 degrees celsius (84.5F) at noon. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? Read the FAQ: http://web.bham.ac.uk/busbykg/kraftwerk/FAQ/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "richard marston" Date: 30 Nov 2000 19:29:34 -0000 Hi, I'm just back from a trip to Japan and while there I found a great record collectors' shop in Tokyo which has loads of Kraftwerk stuff on vinyl. The place is called Vinyl, Part 1 and is at: 1F Shinjuku Hamada Building, 4-7 Nishi-Shinjuku, 7 Chome, Shinjuk-ku, Tokyo 160. They have a huge quantity of stuff, from punk onwards. There I saw things like the red vinyl versions of the Man Machine album, many copies of the Autobahn album (they grade items by pressing edition as well as by quality) all the 12" singles from 1977 onwards, all the early albums and many bootlegs. There was an unusual compilation album (I forget the name) I had never seen before: it had Tanzmusik, Wellenlänge and Heimatklänge on side 1; and Klingklang on side 2 – a French album, it had the colour photo from the Ralf & Florian album as the front cover pic. There were also many copies of all their early singles -- most in picture sleeves (I saw the road cone design on a 7" French edition of Comet Melody, for example). I was looking for the Edition Espanol version of Electric Cafe, but alas, no luck, so instead I bought a couple bootlegs including the vinyl Tribal Gathering and that "Instore Sampler" thing -- not great, but it's good to have the 1983 Technopop on vinyl; it sounds much clearer than the CD versions, maybe vinyl hides the poor sound more than CD, but also the stereo seperation seems better IMO. :-) btw, I got my copy of the Remix 12" when I returned -- as expected the Orbital and Kervorkian ones are the most listenable. The rest seem like DJ fodder to me. They all suffer from a the usual remixers' problem in that they don't really go anywhere once they get started, just set up a groove and chug along. At least Orbital's has some energy; and Kervorkian's has a great first half -- I'd love to hear that version played live by KW as a gig-starter. :-) :-) _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web. No Coldcut or Skratch Picklez or operatic or country genre's.. Where's Nusrat fateh Ali Kahn or Barbara Streisand? If it's anything I've learned from the last "top artists by popular vote" it's that it's a very easily slanted and informal process with LOADS of kiddies voting.. No Burnadette Peters? What the hell.. ;) About the US election "process" - what if a impeachment trial begins right before Clinton escapes office? It's kinda funny.. we discover a new form of life - it's a worm that lives in methane ice pockets in very specialized regions off coastal shelves - and Clinton signs a bill to exploit the methane ice as fuel. Fuck geneome research - that was inevitable. This is a truely unexpected discovery to benifit in ways we have only begun to speculate. And like the whale.. we will sacrifice it's existance to fuel our lives for another ten years. .b FREE ANONYMOUS EMAIL! What the hell.. ;) And where in the heck are the Beach Boys, Brian Eno, Rolling Stones or even Elvis and James Brown? What are Radiohead, Chemical Brothers and Eminem doing on that list? The Kinks, The Jam, The Ramones, Nirvana or The New York Dolls influenced far more bands than those two ever will, hell, even Gino Soccio, JM Jarre, Cerrone and Giorgio Moroder made hundredths of people grab a musical instrument (well, maybe a deck) for their first time in their lives. OTOH, I'm very please to see that Kraftwerk, Bowie, Beatles, Pistols, Smiths, S. Wonder, Dylan, Velvet U, and Joy Division made the list. Miles D. was a good choice, but then again where are Thelonious Monk, K. Stockhausen and Philip Glass? Oh well... Yes, I've already placed my comments that site. Enrique a.k.a. gaucho_pop NP: Kraftwerk E2K the remixes (BTW, I'm in love with Orbital's and FK's beefy remixes! Where's that Rolando guy from? I love your take on E2K and if you ask me, your remix along with maybe a Sasha, BT and William Orbit remixes would have been excellent additions to the Orbital and FK's remixes.
