The pop woild is a fickle old place folks. And such a wide variety of influencial acts can lead to high feelings over choices made by the not so educated. In any case, why kraftwerk? I know it's the point of this list, but _they_ were influenced too. So the whole thing is meaningless. > The Beatles were the group to > influence the world and are behind...er, Radiohead. Eminem is new and > he seems to be in the list as well (?). That's always the way. I mean, Radiohead, great band, but don'tcha think the new album is a little too 'warp records' to be comfortable. It's all been done before. Yorke even admits it. As for Eminem, soem ppl like him, and they would vote for him, regardless of influentiality. It's fickle. > As for David Bowie, personally > I can't see who's been influenced by this idiot bisexual grandad who > refuses to give up for being too old, especially as since 1977 he was > also inspired by KW and his music up to the 80s was rather commercial > yucky pop which sounded in areas like a cheap KW rip off anyway. First thoughts: great cover design (better than the German one) but terribly conservative text design, I think innappropriate for a book about Kraftwerk. At least it's printed on good quality paper. I like the structure -- short chapters, like little snapshots. There seems to be about 25% or more new text than the German edition. A couple of new photos, but a number of photos in the German edition have been removed in this new version, including many of the early KW ones. Pity the shot of the Mata Hari is gone, too; I thought that gave a real flavour of early 70s Dussldorf and the early Kraftwerk world. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web. It's been a while since I've had this CD out, and had forgotten a lot of the text that was on the jewel case. Firstly, who spoke Russian in The Robots? I have to assume it was either Joschko Rudas (a Russian sounding name?) or Leanard Jackson (a Russian sounding first name?). Secondly, who were these two? On the CD liner it says Leanard Jackson courtesy Whitfield Records, and yet I can't find any discography by this person online. Thirdly, and I have this on fairly good authority from someone who speaks the tongue, the Russian text on the back of the CD liner (and on the back cover) is indeed what is spoken in The Robots, but not pronounced properly. This appears to be a documentary of some sort. The only information I know about it comes from the teletext on Film Four. It reads as follows: "Brazilian film maker Tara Lee assembled this fascinating documentary film about the rich history of electronic music. Cutting back and forth between archive footage of avant garde composers such as John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen and more recent development Lee's film contends that electronic music is one of the most artistic developments of the 20th Century. Synth pioneers Kraftwerk, the Afrika Bambaataa and modern day chart toppers the Prodigy all feature." So... when's this on? Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock," an "old school" electro-funk classic which combined the TEE melodie with the "Numbers" beat is used to illustrate the Kraftwerk influence. Holger Czukay, from the group Can, however, does appear in interviews. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? I personally think it's worth it just to get the A-side of the single ("One Fine Day"). Camouflage has been one of very favorite bands since the late 1980's. It might also interest you to know that their 1991 re-mix single of "Handsome - The Remix" contains a cover version of "Computerliebe", recorded live at the Theaterfabrik Munich, in November 1989. Their music often features Kraftwerkian elements in it, but they certainly have their own unique sound as well, as they regularly incorporate guitars into the synth mix. For those interested, I'd highly recommend checking out their 1989 "Methods of Silence" album. That's what initially got me hooked. :-) Scott _____________________________________________________________ Get email for your site ---> http://mail.cosmo.com # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? It's the same 6 tracks, but it comes in a regular slim CD single case, and has the white-on-black "four figures" graphic on the front, rather then the Expo logo like the German release (in other words, it kind of matches the original UK Expo 2000 release from earlier this year. I guess the Christmas post situation and railway-related delays in England played their part in the prolonged journey, but at last/least it is here; thanks, whoever runs KKKP. BTW, the T-Shirt material is quite reasonable quality and is 'loose fit' -- quite baggy even in size M, so perhaps size differences are moe a matter of length. The mousemat is the thinnest I've ever seen (about 2 mm) and will need pressing underneath a couple of heavy books -- you know, those things made of paper -- before use as it's been rather squashed in the little packet after being wrapped around the shirt. Yes. I saw the video twice at VIVA ZWEI yet. Unfortunately I couldn't record it. I'm still waiting and hoping that it will be shown in "Berlin House" once ;-) It seems to me that kraftwerk.de is now available as flash-version only. Anyone heard of Takako Minekawa? One of her albums, "Cloudy Cloud Calculator", has a strong Kraftwerkian influence, especially on songs like 'Kraftpark', 'Kangaroo Pocket Calculator', and 'Cloud Chips'. I guess the best way to describe most of the album is to imagine the sounds that Ralf and Florian would produce if they were Japanese females instead of German males. Minekawa is often criticized as being "too cute", but I'm sure there are some Kraftwerk fans out there that would really appreciate her stuff, because she borrows the Kraftwerk sound and adds an Asian-pop twist to it. (BTW, Minekawa is also the spokesperson for the "Playstation" - that's her voice at the end of every "PS" ad.) =^_^= Kling Klang! -Sarah :-) ____________________________________________________________________________ + IF YOU MISS ME YOU SHOULD TAKE SOME MEDICINE + ____________________________________________________________________________ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? Read the FAQ: http://web.bham.ac.uk/busbykg/kraftwerk/FAQ/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Andrew Dieffenbach Subject: (kw) The Hall of Mirrors analysis... Date: 29 Dec 2000 02:29:07 -0600 Greetings! I know there is often many petty discussions about the meanings of various things Kraftwerk on the mailing list. Here I contribute my own (hoping it makes some reasonable sense): I was listening to "The Hall of Mirrors" a little while ago. I pondered how out of place it is on Trans-Europe Express... even "Showroom Dummies" makes some sense to support the album's theme. I then started getting ideas about perhaps a different meaning or perception of the song: What might have first tipped it off is the fact that Emil Schult wrote the lyrics. Everyone knows about the "looking glass" from the adventures of Alice in Wonderland. Although many claim author Lewis Carrol did not experiment with drugs, aspects of this story question this idea (come one, eating mushrooms; hooka smoking caterpillars; potions and cakes that make you larger and smaller; etc.). I would not be surprised if sixties artist Schult has ingested psychedelic mushrooms or LSD. From all the Organisation work, I would not be surprised if most of Kraftwerk had either. Furthermore, mirrors are often associated with LSD trips, due to their extraordinary effect on users while viewing and tripping. At one point the song states "sometimes he saw his real face and sometimes a stranger at his place." Many times LSD users report the sense that the person behind the mirror is actually another living; thinking person. Frequent to LSD trips, people under the influence discover great beauty or interest in their own appearence. Other times, if not the same time, trippers will hallucinate horrible happenings to their appearance or exaggerate features. This is expressed when the lyrics state "he fell in love with the image of himself and suddenly the image was distorted" and "even the greatest stars dislike themselves in the looking glass." "He made up the person he wanted to be and changed into a new personality. Even the greatest stars change themselves in the looking glass." It is a common fact that the experience a person who has taken LSD can very often leave a drastic impression on him or her. Some users go mad, others turn into quiet kittens, and most live life differently in some way or another afterwards. Thus, this impression changes the person into an image developed from a "trip;" perhaps "discovers himself in the looking glass." Although I deem this artifact lightly, perhaps "even the greatest stars live their lives in the looking glass" illustrates the fact that many LSD users often relive certain key points in their life. Also, this could support the next idea. I believe the line about artists living the mirror is a way of saying that the images and ideas often percieved during LSD trips or any kind of trip including dreams or meditive states or one's imaginative "third eye" are often expressed through art or an artist's work (work being his living and often times... his life). The song very much seemed out of place... it was very "trippy" in that the sounds seemed to echo or reflect as beams of light would in a "hall of mirrors." Sounds seem to almost randomly pop in and out... very psychedelic in many respects. Most popularly, the idea of seeing sounds and hearing images. I realise the more accepted meaning of the song. However, this meaning did not sit with me well in that Kraftwerk was at a fairly high time during this album. They would not be reflecting on how crappy their lives are after being great stars or whatever, for they were at the point of stardum. I believe this song was adapted to fit this second meaning. Thus, the idea of "greatest stars." I do not know any other way to interpret "stars." Of course the song might have been changed by Kraftwerk because the lyrics are credited as being co-written by Emil Schult. Anyway... Please throw any suggestions about this topic. I am sure not many Kraftwerk songs can be analyzed in such a way. However, it is noted that this is not only a Kraftwerk song... it wasn't until Schult's intervention during Man-Machine did one start asking "are WE the robots... mindless workers"? I am sure it was not Kraftwerk only intention to create the interesting idea of performing robots (red soviet clothes and Russian lyrics)... I don't know... feel free to criticize.
