My name is Michael Dangermond, I'm new to the list, but not new to Kraftwerk. My first experience with Kraftwerk was also my first experience with a Walkman. I heard Numbers and Computerworld on my friend Kevin's Sanyo personal stereo when I was a junior in high school. Right away Kraftwerk were my favorite group. It seemed like a rhythm of my life and what I would like to be. It sounds like it could be dance music, but it's not something you can really dance to, I find that Kraftwerk is something your brain dances to... Perhaps this perception is shaped by my first experience with it as something more or less beamed directly into your brain, a personal experience, you and the music. It's like software as well as music, a clean boot at a constant speed to blend in with the processing of your thoughts. I'm not one of those people who only listens to Kraftwerk or tech-music. I like listening to historic classical music recordings such as those conducted by Wilhelm Furtwangler, also various music from around the world, like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, old Arabic songs, also avant-garde composers like Penderecki, Stockhausen, Ligeti, Steve Reich, whatever is interesting. For me, Kraftwerk stands out not only because of their sound, which is clean but yet expressive of the human element contained within a single tone, but also because of their form. The reason Kraftwerk to me stands out as one of the best Tech/electro/whatever pop is that their music is introduced and developed in a form that makes one able to listen to it over and over again. I was wondering if anyone else had noticed this. I would like to know if people are getting together after the concert in SF, and where, I'd like to meet you all, you're a good group of wonderful people, I'm glad I joined the list. (Also glad it all goes into a different mailbox, everyone here writes a lot...) :) Thanks Michael Dangermond # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? Jeez- only 1 week to go! I'm STOKED! The Warfield show is SOLD OUT. Can we try to meet in line early before the Konzert? General admission- first come, first served. For reserved seats in the balcony you wont have to be too early, but, it would be nice to get to know each other while we're waiting to get in and pass the time. I'll try to be there by 4pm or 5pm. Doors open around 6:30, show starts about 8. 'Probably ends at 10pm. I'm easy to find. Look for a short fat chick with LONG red hair & glasses doing a bit of ROBOT mime. I'll be wearing a shiny silver headband -(tucked under my hair, so, it's only visible on my forehead)- and a big chrome musical note on my lapel or shirt- 'not sure which outfit. I'm looking for a basic black and/or silver/grey "secretary suit". If you find ME, you'll find each OTHER, too. :] If a local person can recommend a place to meet after the show, right close by the Warfield, that would be nice. Or we could just walk to the nearest decent bar/restaurant. -(bad neighborhood, though.)- Christoph Marquardt and I will be staying Sat and Sun night at the Union Square Plaza Hotel, 432 Geary, [415 776-7585] just 3 blocks away from the Konzert! So far it's $89 a night + tax for 2 adults, 2 queen beds. We can handle it ourselves, no problem, but, there's room for 2 more just in case someone needs to sleep over. -(I think I have 1 or 2 people interested.)- I gotta get up early Monday morning the 8th and find a ride to the airport to catch the LA show. I'll be departing SFO at 11:35am, arriving in Burbank at 12:42pm. Then I'll be staying with a friend in LA for a couple of days before returning home to Eureka. NOTE: For those of you also going to the Hollywood Palladium; same drill about meeting in line. Also, there will be a party after the Konzert at Kontrol Faktory, 839 N.Highland. BE there! I hope we can all meet each other! Who knows, Ralf and Florian just might accept the Klub owner's invitation and show up to wind down after the gig. However, after smashing their way out of various store windows the Autons don't, unfortunately, go into a club and start to dance, instead they roam the streets of west London slaying passers-by. Great stuff! :) incidently the Autons returned a year later in 'Terror Of The Autons', the story that saw the first apperence of 'The Master', so catch that one too if you can. jon alsbury i want to die in my sleep like my grandfather ... not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? My wife recently went on a bussiness trip to Japan. It was her first time there, and I told her if it wasn't any trouble, she could go to the record store and buy me "the most Japanese looking" Kraftwerk CD she could find. She brought me back "The Best of Kraftwerk" on Capitol, number TOCP-50115 (TOCP-7913). On the disc itself if says Mfd. by Toshiba-EMI Ltd in Japan 1993. It has an obi (sash) on it that's about 1cm wide, wraps around the CD to cover about 5mm of the back, and is mostly in Japanese. The cover of the booklet has a sort of landscape grid with a blue beginning sunrise. The inside of the booklet has the lyrics to the songs in Japanese, and POORLY translated English (worth the price of the CD!). The last page of the booklet has a discography which even covers the first three pre-Autobahn albums and up to and including The Mix. The back cover of the booklet has some sort of electronic graphic design in orange/black/red. The back cover of the CD has the infamous four member B&W portrait from the US TransEuropeExpress album and the song titles over the colored design on the back cover of the booklet. My wife said this was the only Japanese Kraftwerk CD she found, the rest were all German, although she only had time to shop in one store (Tower in Tokyo). [For those interested, she also bought me a double CD of Japanese (!) techno with more than 30 artists on it, the only one I ever heard of was CD Krush.] Songs (all pre-The Mix Versions) 1. Geiger Counter 2. Radioactivity 3. Antenna 4. Europe Endless 5. Showroom Dummies 6. Trans-Europe Express 7. The Robots 8. The Model 9. The Man Machine I've heard through others that Japanese CDs were better sound quality than their US or European counterparts. I didn't really believe this. But in direct comparison to my other CDs I found this to be true! It's just a hair clearer and louder, no big deal, but I noticed it. Whatever happened to these tunes? Remember back when synthesizers were new, they were like exoticism from a newly created land. And the soundscapes were indeed created, unlike now when so many sounds that come prepackaged with the instrument. There are a few artists that still really get into the sound, like Bjork, for example. But being a Kraftwerk fan, doesn't it seem lazy to not create your own sounds? Maybe what has happened is that electronic music doesn't sound new anymore - isn't as naive as it was in the Age of Aquarius so it feels okay to duplicate... maybe the cultural sound libraries are full. I am trying to stay free of expectation for the upcoming concert. I'll enjoy the songs they made twenty years ago, but also eagerly anticipate new material, and going to a real environment that they will create, in itself it should be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I question the assertion that Kraftwerk are the innovators, at least in the sense that Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. I mean, they're innovators in the way that all artists are innovative. I think what makes Kraftwerk so special and the upcoming concert such a treat is the spiritual quality to their music. I think this is what they mean like "You're the antenna catching vibration" I've found it to be true that people who don't understand the beauty of radio waves vibrating particles through the universe can not understand the beauty of Kraftwerk. I have an extra ticket with me and if a certain theoretical physicist Mr. Hawking responds to me by email in time, the ticket is his for free. What if Kraftwerk showed up and there brought only acoustic instruments? Would there be a riot? Does anyone think that Kraftwerk has typecast themselves as the fathers of electronic music in a bad way, like Robert Reed typecast himself as the father of the Brady Bunch? Has anyone else also found that the German lyrics are better, I mean they have more poetic meaning. I have one hope for the concert, that they do most of what they do in German. Except maybe for the song Radioactivity, which maybe should have new parts in Hindi and Urdu. I mean, in upcoming years international phone calls will be almost free anyway, they will be doing us a favor. M. I was asking my friend in NY for a ticket because I assumed it was sold out. I guess they're not as popular as I thought. Either that or the show hasn't been advertised or something. Have you heard of Joey Beltram, Luke Slater, Underworld, Future Sound of London, Aphex Twin, to name a few. With the exception of keyboards you'd buy in a mall, all synths allow you to create your own sounds. <> Maybe your not opening your heart up to new music anymore. They influenced thousands of musicians, and created a whole new way of approach music. The same can be said of Kraftwerk (except for the part about the blues). tIMPURE # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? Or perhaps they just won't play any Kraftwerk at all and just do covers for the entire tour... That might make a few people upset, but those are just the hippies anyway. Yeah, I can almost make out the visuals: "The stage is dark except for the subtle red lights dimly casting a rosey glow onto the walking paths that lead to the terminals each of the Werkers will be situating themselves at. Crowd noise increases as the restless, overheated masses begin to swell with anticipation. "The automated intro sequence suddenly kicks in, no-one was aware of any change on stage and all eyes are glued to it. 'Numbers' begin counting down to the beat and the crowd goes frantic! All bodies press and bounce lightly to the angular, stiff q-tips and kick-bass, watching and grooving to the ambience. The numbers are slowly being drowned out with a strange, whiney sound and a wide organ chord is sweeping in. The lush phase and odd tin-like picks and pucks pop all around in sequence with 'numbers' - the echoes are extending longer and longer... A dark figure rising from the floor into a gigantic, mobile home-sized test tube can be seen from the rear center of the stage set. What appear to be giant pressure valves and porthole doors are strategically placed on either side of it's length, which is longer than the stage itself and continues out the rear of the curtains. The tube is facing the audience with phallic justice, silently reflecting in the inky blackness of the 1940's H.G.Wells industrial stage. A flash here and there can be seen from the huddled mass held within it like a lame' pickle in a mason jar. It seems to be a giant, glittery ball that shifts and swerves of it's own accord. The tube seems full of a gassy, amber fog that swirls thickly in smokey strands... "The chorus of noise has minimized to just a subtly phasing chord.=20 Small yellow lights bordering the tube flicker to life and the entire enclosure slides noiselessly towards the audience. The crowd quiets to a silence, in awe, definately startled. "A gasp escapes the audience when the bloated, sequined body of Nell Carter floats through the gas to the front of the glass. The melody of 'Subhuman' by Throbbing Gristle can be made out from the sonic structure, however the singing is whale-like and fantastic. Her mishapen head gazes out to the crowd with milky, drugged eyes as vaginal-shaped lips part and vast worlds begin unfolding onstage. The crowd is stunned with the bizzare display and Nell has never sounded better. Jarre has his JArKaos, Kraftwerk have a level three guild navigator to provide the greatest multimedia presentation of all." Arg! Gotta go back to work now. L8r...
