Ten Little Negros is also the title of Agatha Christie's novel. There's another CD bootleg called "Tour De Trance", again a mixture of previous publications of mixes of disc-jockeys, and some tracks, even more desperate, are not by Kraftwerk, they include only samples of "Die Mensch-Maschine", and even there is a song supposedly by Wolfgang Fluer, "Robocop 2". If you want a decription of these and other more KW bootlegs ask me for a copy of "The Complete Kraftwerkers Guide To Bootleg CD's (So far!)" published by the Aktivität fanzine team. ;-) Mail me if you are interesed. I can sell or swap for any KW produkt. I would like to carry out a poll in order to know which song and album are the best Kraftwerk works, according to the list members. I created two e-mail accounts on my linux box: they are: song@t232b.chem.umn.edu and album@t232b.chem.umn.edu I guess you guessed that the first one is to vote for the best song and the second one to vote for the best album. I made up a couple of rules to make easier for me to count the votes and avoid problems with the server (which is my poor and old linux box). 1. The name of the song/album will be in the "subject" line. This is the only thing you will write there. For example, if you want to vote "The robots" you will have to send an email to song@t232b.chem.umn.edu with the subject line "the robots"; that's it. Don't put anything on the body of the message; that would help me not to overload the inbox file. 2. You can only vote one song/album per email, but you can send as much emails as you want. Be honest; i.e., if you really LOVE "Electric Cafe" don't sent one hundred emails voting to "EC", so that it will win the poll. As I said, the email server is an old Mac running Linux, and I am the closest thing to a "system manager". That means that the computer crashes every now and then. If you experience some problems, let me know it at corchado@comp.chem.umn.edu For those concerned with security issues, spam email and stuff, I won't use any information I get. Even if I get an email from hutter@klingklang.de, nobody will know it, just me, and I won't use that address. At this moment now I plan to keep the accounts up to Oct. 18 (next sunday), but it will depend on the flux of incoming mail, suggestions, and so on. I will post the results to the list as soon as I can process them. I would like you to suggest the way I should count the votes. For example; should I consider the german and english versions of an album/song as the same or different albums/songs? What about remixes? I am specially thinking of the versions in "The Mix". If someone votes for "Radioactivity, The Mix version" should I count it as a vote to "Radioactivity"? Thanks for your cooperation, and start sending your votes. It's pretty damn good. I've never seen it before and being it was made in the UK, carried a hefty $30 price tag. But the remixes are all fantastic. Here's the playlist in case anyone's interested: Computer World (Klick Mix) Pocket Calc. (East Meets West Mix) Music Non Stop (Cut Up Mix) TEE (T.E.E. Hi everyone! When I saw Kraftwerk play in San Francisco earlier this year, I couldn't help but wonder exactly what they are doing behind all of those consoles. The show didn't seem to be completely sequenced... it did seem like they were doing something, but it generally didn't seem to resemble the actions normally associated with playing a musical instrument. Now, Ralf (who was on the left side of the stage) did seem to have an actual musical keyboard in his console, although it didn't always seem as if he was playing it. He also seemed to have at least one expression pedal for it. Also, I think the new fellow next to him (Henning Schmitz) had a keyboard as well. I gather Ralf was responsible for melody parts and the fellow next to him with bass parts? I'm not so sure. Moving to the right, the third player (Fritz Hilpert) seemed to be very busy, with a large aresnal of foot pedals which were in constant use. I am guessing that he was working with some sort of live sequencer, perhaps something like the Regelwerk or Schaltwerk from Doepfer? ( http://www.doepfer.de/rw_e.htm and http://www.doepfer.de/sw_e.htm respectively.) Anyway, he really seemed to be working! (werking?) And at the end was Florian... who seemed to be doing next to nothing! He barely ever moved, and mostly seemed to be reading from a small 3-ring binder on top of his console. The only things I could come up with that he might be doing were mixing the audio or controlling the light/video show. He seemed to be very bored. Based on what I have seen and read (concert notes from http://members.xoom.com/kraftworld/concerts/1998Tour.html were very enlightening...), I am guessing that Kraftwerk's performance system is based at least partly on live triggering (or live editing of sequences) of pre-sequenced musical phrases, which control changes and system clocks sent via MIDI, which is synchronized to a SMPTE output from the video show. Expression, reverb and other continuous parameters are changed via foot pedals, whose functionality varies from song to song. There are probably also mixers in the consoles which allow fine tuning of the output of each sound module. The consoles in the front are merely "control consoles"... the gear which makes the sound all resides in the consoles in the back... Now, that all sounds very good, but it's all just my theories. Also, I am still not sure who is doing what during the performance. Does anybody else have any ideas (corrections)? Take care. - -- Timon -- # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info kraftwerk" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email kraftwerk@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Other questions? For example, annotate the ranked list like this: The Robots, all versions: ___ votes The Robots, CW version: ___ votes The Robots, Mix version: ___ votes Where the first one would be the sum of all votes for all versions of the song. Just a thought.
