Before anyone gets "reply" button happy, I ask that you read my entire post before "letting me have it", please! :) Let me start off by saying that I read the first post regarding abortion and I have deleted, without reading, every one since. This is a sickening subject to me...I am not saying that those of you who are discussing it are wrong to do so, I am just saying that "I" can't stand it. Bear in mind that I haven't read the other posts, please forgive me if someone has already addressed this. As a parent I would be "furious" if my daughter came home and told me that her YW lesson discussed abortion!!!!! I realize that their are yw out there who don't have parents that will handle an "issue" like this, but that doesn't mean that my toes should be stepped on because of it. The main idea of the abortion string may have been "teach them that it isn't a way out". This is just such a touchy subject, my advice (for those of you who haven't already deleted this) is to have some faith in the parent's!!! As a stake leader I KNOW there are YW out there who do not have parent's that "talk" to them. I can think of 15-20 girls just off the top of my head who I know don't have parent's that are comfortable "talking" to their girls about teenage subjects...let alone abortion. I don't know what the answer is. I can't see sending out a permission slip to the parents for a yw to attend a class discussion on abortion. But I also can't see having my own daughter come home and tell me that "Sister Whoever talked to me about abortion." I can see mentioning in a passing sentence that abortion is not acceptable and is a sin in the eyes of the Lord. However, I don't think that this string would have gotten so long if that were the question. I have so much love for the sisters (and the few brethren :)) on this list and for the YW. I am not sure if I wrote this as a YW leader or as a mother, but these are my feelings. I have read and re-read this post five times now. I can't see how anyone can be offended by it, I can see people not agreeing with me...and this is the beauty of the list...you can still do whatever you think is right for your girls. I just couldn't keep deleting this gross topic from my "subject" list anymore without saying something. For those of you who wish to e-mail your supporting words, please send it privately so that it doesn't take up space on the list. For those sister's who would rather toast me, please have the courage to send it for EVERYONE to read (if you don't, I will). I have received some very hurtful and ugly replies to some of my posts, granted I expected them, but if you have words to say to me (or anyone) that can't be said in front of everyone, maybe you should think twice before saying them at all. (I am not sure where that tangent came from, but for what it's worth, there it is). We had a great lesson today. We had a guest speaker from the adjoining ward. Good friend who VOLUNTEERED to teach. Best kind of friend! She had me hide a pair of scissors in my pocket prior to the lesson.... Had we had our Bishop there... That would be best to have him hide the scissors. As she spoke she talked about her daughter (you could substitute younger sibling, day care kids, friends kids ect..) Who was at that age where they insist on doing EVERYTHING themselves. Sound familiar? Well, she was doing a lot of buttoning and couldn't get one of the buttons through the hole. Finally, she asked her mother to help. At this point she brought out a HUGE button made of Styrofoam. And a piece of felt.. . She called up one of the girls and asked them to put the button through the hole. Impossible. The hole was to small. Who can help you with this problem? Who could she turn to for help? Who has been set apart and sustained to help you? Who has the tools. She walked over to me and I gave her the "tool" to help her through her problem. She related this to Our Savior ... we have problems and we try to deal with them ourselves. I can do this on my own! As she related this she was trying to again force the button through the hole... But no matter how we try with some problems.... We are not able to work through them without the help of our leaders, bishop, The Savior. You can take this object lesson in many directions. Just thought I would share. Each Ward has = chosen a Value and corresponding Value Color for their Kingdom (ie, = Knowledge are the Know-a-lots, Individual Worth are Worth-a-Lots, etc.) = We are incorporating the family theme in several ways. Each Kingdom is = referred to as "The Family of the Green Kingdom" etc. Stake Camp is The = Royal Court and they camp at Our Royal Home. We have designated all = areas of camp with Renaissance type names: Flag is in the Royal = Courtyard, Sports is in the Jousting Arena, Fires are taught at The = Spit, Personal Progress Class is named "Princess Power 101," even the = bathrooms are The Throne Rooms, etc. We hope to impress upon our young = women just how special they are and the royal birthright that is = there--in a fun way. We plan to touch on our eternal family that = started in the pre-existance, our present earthly families, and = preparation for our future families. Have some cute skits in the works = for all that. My hubby is the one with the dark hair and me with the long blondish hair. It was a great experience. My hubby works in the film industry and happened to also be working for the church on the video in lighting. When it was our turn he changed into a suit, and they asked us spontaneous questions about how we felt about our birth mother and being adoptive parents. He was sad because all of his responses apparently hit the editing room floor (haha). After our filming was over we came outside and he went back to work, and the whole crew was crying! After several years of trying hard not to even = think such words, I finally felt like I was making progress. I dropped = a can of tomatoes on my toes last winter, and let me tell you I wanted = to say something horrible! It hurt! I stood there and said Uh, Uh, Uh, = UHHHH! I was so frustrated and I could not think of a single bad word = to say! They just were not in my head. Afterward, I was so proud of = myself! Two days later I was driving in a car and saw a car that was = really dusty and someone had written some very unpleasant words in the = dust. I quickly looked away but I saw them briefly. When I was teaching in YW 13 years ago the lesson manual suggested a video for the lesson. The lesson wasn't necessarily on abortion, but the video was, you could check the library to see if they still have some of those old videos in there...sorry I don't remember the name of it. BTW, I didn't preview the video before I showed it....had no idea what it was about....got in trouble by one of the moms (who had had an abortion) but the bishop backed me up because the manual said it should be shown.
