If we are talking the best actor, I would think Kevin Spacey, with Tom Hanks impressing me as one of the best of his generation. And I have seen too many amazing roles to pick ONE movie (tho the ones suggested above were very impressive) > > > Best Performance By An Actress: Vivien Leigh > > > (Scarlet O'Hara, "Gone > > > With The Wind") >Susan Sarandon in DEAD MAN WALKING - 1995 perhaps ? ;-) Again, so many that I hate to play favourites. I think Frances McDormand has impressed me with her work the most, not to take anything away from the likes of Meryl Streep, Michelle Pfiffer, Ingred Bergman, or so many others > > > Best Visual Effects For A Motion Picture: Titanic > > > (1997) > > **** Great pick, I loved Titanic too, 5/5 ... Platoon affected me in that I completely lost myself in the movie. It was a shock to walk out of the theatre into a Midwestern winter, after feeling like I had been in the Vietnamese jungle for the previous two hours. However, I think Enemy at the Gates was also just stunning, and could pick either of these. I watched ENEMY OF THE STATE again yesterday, I was in the mood for a no brainer action film. Good material, my rating remains at 3/5 although this time I enjoyed it a lil' more probably ... It isn't a "charity" 3/5 like the first time around ... where I was going back and forth ... thumbs up - thumbs down - thumbs up ... ;-) Story of a young lawyer, Will Smith, who is in major trouble when someone he knew in college gives him a videotape showing the murder of a big time congressman (Jason Robards). Jon voight had him murdered because he wouldn't vote the way he wanted. The murder was filmed accidentally by a video camera further away ... (Great foot pursuit !!) It's then a cat and mouse game as the NSA agents are after Smith, ruining his family life and doing everything they can to get the tape back, getting rid of witnesses, etc. Gene Hackman plays an Ex-NSA agent who is helping Smith along the way ... Always a pleasure to see him, contrarely to Mr. Smith that I find annoying most of the times ... (Minor repellent !) It's good and intense material up until the last quarter of the film when it turns quite silly and I really dislike the ending as well ... You know the scene with Tom Sizemore ... how convenient !! Yeah, I would have hidden under the table too ... had I written that scene !! ;-) It's a Bruckheimer film so it's big, loud, noisy ... Fast and furious. Worth a look, it's a Friday night film. The one liners should all have been removed, it annoys me to see someone making jokes when he is in mortal danger of getting WHACKED by a machine gun or in a car pursuit. Making it more serious would improve the film actually. Bruckheimer films I have seen, chronological order : Thief - 1981 - 3/5 Beverly Hill's cop - 1984 - 3/5 Top gun - 1986 - 2.5/5 Beverly Hill's cop 2 - 1987 - 2/5 Days of thunder - 1990 - 2.5/5 Bad boys - 1995 - 1.5/5 Perfect example, Will and his DAMN ONE LINERS !! It's totally unamusing !! Enough already, Grrrrrrr !! ;-) Crimson tide - 1995 - 4/5 (Best Bruckheimer film !) Dangerous minds - 1995 - 2/5 The rock - 1996 - 2.5/5 Con air - 1997 - 3/5 (Hiding my face !) POP CORN flick !! Armageddon - 1998 - 1/5, Worst Bruckheimer film. They both seem to have similar issues though, i.e. Strong starts, then it gets so-so in the middle section, a couple of neat twists, slightly implausible ending ... In general I like those thrillers though so I had a good time watching "Along came a spider" ... ;-) As Dr. > Cross, Morgan > Freeman makes the film watchable at best, but the > ominous presence of > loopholes, twisted logic, and the overall way in > which the movie toys > with the audience, results in slight disappointment. ***** I agree in part I thought the film was a lil' "sloppy" but I had low expectations after hearing comments from several critics so I was actually pleasantly surprised, it wasn't such a bad film ! > > > The movie opens with a chase sequence that serves > little purpose > other than to set up a time of emotional turmoil in > Cross's life, > after the death of his partner as a result of this > pursuit. **** Agreeing, I was wondering why this whole set up was there ... plus that part was bad CGI, you could tell it was all "fake", really ... "Oh come on ...." lol ! It was just questionable ... I agree some of the plot elements could be better and the kidnapper seems awfully SLOPPY in part for someone who is supposed to be an expert and planned this kidnapping so precisely. > There are plot points that work, and those that > don't, and in the > end, the movie has toyed with us a little too much. > "Kiss the Girls" > toyed with our expectations, too, but allowed us > time to build our > own conclusion before throwing it back at us, all > the while keeping > our interest peaked. This was superior material from Mexico. In spanish with english subtitles. Final score : 4/5 and it is in my top 10 favorites for 2000 right now. The film begins in the middle really ... Around a PIVOTAL car chase/car crash ... Two young mexican men in a car are pursued by thugs in a pick up truck. Pretty exciting material right there actually, shaky images, loud noises ... This is what I call *an opening sequence* ... I was reminded of RESERVOIR DOGS except here it's a big black dog that is bleeding in the back seat instead of Tim Roth ! ;-) The boys' Rottweiler (sp. ?) has been shot and is bleeding profusely in the back seat ... To find out how and why it happened you must watch the rest of the film of course. The movie tells 3 different stories at once. They are all going on at the same time a-la PULP FICTION ... As soon as the car crashes we go into a series of flashbacks leading to that PIVOTAL moment for the 3 different stories when 2 cars collide at a busy intersection. (Wow, this is an amazing car crash, no CGI there, it's all REAL !!) The film is very bloody and people who don't want to see graphic scenes of violence should stay away from this one ... Plenty of dogs being killed and/or mistreated too, involved in dog fights, bloody wounds, corpses etc. (No dogs were hurt for REAL of course but it looks quite realistic on screen I must say !) (Lots of human BEINGS are also bloody at one point or another !!) One story deals with the two boys and their dog ... One of the boys is in love with his brother's pregnant wife and even has an affair with her ... He wants to make a lot of money fast, no matter how, and split with her before his big brother finds out ... He uses the dog to make the extra bread, getting the pet involved in some nasty dog fights and angering thugs along the way of course because that Rottweiler is unbeatable so he defeats any dog they put in the ring with him ... The 2nd story is the least interesting one for me, it deals with a supermodel who happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time ... She has an affair with a married man ... Then something happens and they both get in major trouble ... The last story involves a man who owns about 10 dogs and he is also a HIT MAN on the side, wasting people and getting a lot of money in return ... He used to be a soldier but then became a hired gun after getting into trouble in the army. Good work there, nasty twist !! We follow him as he is asked to whack someone. The whole film is NASTY as I said, except maybe for the 2nd story but even that one is not for the squimmish ... All 3 stories mix at one point or another and I always like that concept. This film deserves to be called a "mexican Pulp fiction" and I enjoyed it a lot ! (I gave 5/5 to Pulp fiction and this is similar in part.) I like to watch American films. My favorite American films are E.T., The Legend of 1900, Rome in holiday and Planet of apes. I like to watch films with subtitles rather than films, which are dubbed for I want to study English, too. I think that movies are often very sentimental. I think that "Rain man" is very sentimentalism film. I like both comedies and horror films and I always see horror films with my friend who likes horror films very much. I don't think that I like the same kind of films as Tim. Always I watch films to relax. If I was busy with my work I cannot watch any films. I like Japanese films because of I like Japanese Director "Hayao Miyazaki". My favorite European Film is"Grand Bleu". It is very beautiful movies of sea and dolphins .I like soundtrack of"Grand Bleu", too. I like SF and Adventure films. My favorite actor is Tim Ross. Favorite movies Planet of Apes Original Planet of the Apes begins with four astronauts traveling in space. They crash and land on a planet many centuries in the future and are uncertainly location. Taylor (astronaut) notices how similar this planet is to Earth. Taylor and other crews discover primitive humans eating from the trees while acting more like beast than man. Taylor looks up and sees a Gorilla on a horse. It appears that this Planet is ruled by Apes can speak and even walk upright… The Legend of 1900 This is based on Alessandro Baricco's monologue Novecento. It recounts the life of a gifted piano player. His name is. Nineteen Hundred and named for the year in which he was born. Nineteen Hundred is abandoned at birth on tartans-Atlantic ship and grows up in a charmed world of stormy gales, swaying decks, and rare beauty at the keyboard. Apparently it was made for less than 500,000$ and one of Steven Spielberg's first and greatest movies. It is very intense and even if I have seen it 10 times at least I still enjoyed it once again just as much as the first time I saw it at least 15 years ago. Dennis Weaver is a man who has some "issues" in this one ... His wife thinks he is a "loser" because he didn't defend her as a rude guest was pestering her at a party and he still has to make a long road trip to go meet a client who is not too happy with his sales rep services. He must get there to talk to him or he may lose the account. Well, it only gets worse once he encounters a trucker who tries to kill him on the highway, then stalks him, driving him nuts and endangering his life for no apparent reason. (He's just crazy, that's the reason !) Several times during the film Weaver has a chance to turn back but he never does, he has to *finally* become a man and face his personal fears, not find excuses or ways of getting out of trouble as he is used to do. All is not well with him even before the chase begins but he feels he can succeed and defeat this trucker anyway despite his rather limited skills as an ACTION HERO ... Highly recommended for everyone ... Top notch thriller. Trivia : Apparently Spielberg liked this film so much he watches it once every 6 months. The Great Waltz is the semi accurate life of Johan Strauss. Great music, great soundtrack. The female singer only made two movies and was nominated for best supporting actress for this one. The following is from a review in IMDB: THE GREAT WALTZ is one of the all-time great musicals with memorable orchestrations of its magnificent music, beautiful, swirling cinematography, Luise Rainer at her heartbreaking best and Miliza Korjus outrageously divine in performance and voice. The plot adroitly mixes music, smaltz and sentiment with several scenes of heartbreaking, dramatic power. This movie is an absolute joy, a treasure to be seen and enjoyed year after year. - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- gene@ehrich.com gehrich@tampabay.rr.com P.O. That's right, the original film from 1977 ... 24 years old ! ;-) I had not seen it in 5 years approximately, but I have to agree that when you hear that music near the beginning it makes chills go down your spine (oui !) Certainly a classic ! I plan on seeing THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980 ?) tomorrow probably ... Can't wait to see YODA of course, tra-la-la !! ;-) RETURN OF THE JEDI in a week or two ... It's a lil' sad though watching these films because they are so superior to THE PHANTOM MENACE, especially episode 4 and 5 of course ... ;-( Lucas really FUMBLED THE FOOTBALL with episode 1, bummer ! Never caught on?? Teddy, where have you been, old bean?? It's so ironic seeing how important Lucas > thinks Jar Jar and Jake > Lloyd are to the film--he doesn't know he's driving > off a cliff. ****** Yes, you have to wonder about Lucas, does he know what is going on in the REAL world ?? In my opinion he sabotaged The Phantom Menace with the constant BARRAGE of special effects (Including the awful JAR JAR !) and that wee boy (Jake Lloyd) was making me cringe often as well ... Without those annoying elements the film would only have been "watchable" but adding them to the mix just ruined the entire film. Now we learn the title of the next film : "Attack of the Clones" and JAR JAR will be back, what gives ?? There's > the Anakin audition scene that got a lot of > discussion on the DVD newsgroup, > where Natalie Portman is doing line readings with > all the little potential > Anakins and it's quite clear and quite obvious that > Lloyd is the worst one. ***** hehe ! Well, I haven't seen that so I can't comment ... I'll take your word for it !! ;-) > But Lucas goes with him anyway and as the film > progresses, he gets more and > more reliant on special effects technology to try to > hobble a good > performance out of all his lousy takes. **** "Look higher Jake ... JAR JAR's head is gonna be right over *here* ..." (Pointing !) ... I think he shouldn't have waited 16 years to make a new one, it doesn't make any sense, Episode 1 is a prequel yet technically with all that FLUFF and the special effects it looks far more advanced technically, Those effects should be used in a sequel, not a prequel ... Episode 4-5-6 in 1977-1980-1983 Episode 1-2-3 in 1986-1989-1992 Episode 7-8-9 in 1995-1998-2001 ... That would have been more reasonable, no ?? Much better than re-releasing 4 different versions of the original films with lil' bits changed here and there for the FANATICS ... like it makes a big difference to see one of those Sand people on top of a moving beast instead of from far away, geeesh !
