Even if you suck, if you love to play video games then I'd call that a true player. A few more things. I initally bought my N64 'Shark to play The Rock track in SF Rush and to use as a converter to play Puyo Puyo Sun 64. Some of the things the GameShark can do are great like giving you all the cheats in GoldenEye not to mention some that can't be accessed without the 'Shark. Whereas some other codes leave a lot to be desired such as the "no clipping" GoldenEye codes; they're about as useless as the old "play as the Bosses from Street Fighter 2 with the SNES Game Genie". Anybody besides me remember that? The old fashioned way part 1: enter random numbers & letters and hope to god that it does something. 2. The old fashioned way part 2: alter a few numbers or letters to known codes and hope you get something good. 3. Get a device that hooks your GameShark (and I presume your N64) to a PC, I think it's called a comms link but I'm not sure, and that device somehow finds codes by itself, with some prodding from the user of course. As for regular codes like the Konami Code (Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start) for example they usually come from the publishers a few months after a release or from those loons who spend their waking hours pushing random button sequences hoping to score big. I for one always try the Konami Code on every Konami game. Although I really don't care for either if I had to choose it would be Turok. You get used to the fog in Turok but the jumping is a bitch. Besides that the graphics are beautiful, the guns rock, the jungle music is pretty darn cool. Duke Nukem 64 on the other hand is a poor version of a PC shooter that relied on Duke's potty mouth and the game's NC-17 rated theme. Those two aspects are completely gone from the N64 version and the music in DN64 isn't even there. To top it off the control setup in both Duke Nukem 64 & Turok Dinosaur Hunter really suck compared to GoldenEye's, but Duke Nukem 64's is the worse of two evils. Doom 64 is a fun game but I could never get over the poor animation. Those big pink demons look like they're trying to hug you. If you're in the market to get another 1st person shooter for the N64 I'd honestly have to tell you to hold off until Perfect Dark or Turok 2. The other options; Duke Nukem 64, Doom 64, Hexen, and Turok Dinosaur Hunter just really aren't all that great. I don't know about Quake 64 'cos I haven't played it yet. The publisher will either release the code when the game just comes out. For example, Turok came out and the next day, there were codes. The same thing with NFL QBclub. Akklaim (sorry if I misspelled it) has a tendency to do this. A majority of companies do it this way. Other companies release their codes a few months later after the release to add just a bit of replay value to the game. An example of this is GE007, 64 player code. A game, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, still is waiting until the right time to release another code. U know, those Ultimate Combat Code to permanantly keep the hidden players unhidden. And last but not least is, publishers who just don't believe in codes. ie. Shiguer Miyamoto. There is No luigi code, seriously. How the companies tell the public, well one thing for sure, a company might have a webpage like www.nintendo.com where they tell that main company the codes to put it up. Another is they just tell all companies like IGN the codes or IGN asks for the codes. Guess why IGN64.com gets the codes right away when the game comes out. Gameshark codes a little different. There is a manual, not sure cause I don't have GS, that tells some codes. A useful way people find codes is like what is said on the bottom, but in anything and see what happens. This will usually work, believe it or not, but will usually have a big effect or a little effect. You just have to search for the result. Sometimes, it isn't so obvious, like the limbo Mario 64 code. The getting original codes and altering them abit is very effective and with practice and patients, you will soon know what those numbers mean. The number might have a great effect like infinite coins in Mario 64 while if you change one digit, it might only give you 100 coins. Usually the first or last digit will make the effect. Thats all I know about GS.
