From: byoshida@zygote.hsc.usc.edu (Benton Yoshida) Subject: Scot Jenerik + Crawl Unit Date: 01 Oct 1996 05:35:41 -0800 Instagon, Noise Gate, Scot Jenerik, Crawl Unit @ Impala Cafe, 9/27/96 Unfortunately I missed Instagon and Noise Gate. Scot Jenerik set up a long piece of wood with wires stretched across it lengthwise and a large spring suspended under it. The whole thing was supported on sawhorses. He started out plucking the device but most of his performance consisted of beating on it and the floor with drumsticks. He actually created a beat that I hesitate to call tribal for fear of turning off people on this list; almost like a noisier Crash Worship. At the end of his set, he pulled a Pete Townsend and abruptly smashed his set-up with a 2x4. Really cool noises and highly recommended. Crawl Unit was joined by Geoff Brandin (Fin) and made dark ambient type of noises, primarily using metal bowls in which sometimes microphones were used as a pestle. A very nice effect was created by dropping objects in the bowl which yielded a clank followed by some feedback. A nice, relaxing but ominous set. The following is their tour schedule. Jenerik said that other performances that he will be doing this tour before he retires them include drumming on flaming sheets of metal and something else I can't recall. If your neighborhood venue has lax fire codes you may be in for a treat. This will be followed up shortly by a two disc set of older cassette-only material (I believe) also on Extreme entitled "Age of 369/Chant 2". Can anyone on the West coast who has managed to catch any of the first few Merzbow/Masonna shows enlighten the rest of us as to how things are proceeding? Is Masonna still on the bill? Date: 07 Oct 1996 19:58:09 -0700 (PDT) Well, since someone asked, here's a quick review of the fine M/M/M show at the Bottom of the Hill on Saturday, minus mention of the well-intentioned but snooze-inducing Man is the Bastard (as Bastard Noise): MX-80 did a snarling and entertaining set, their first in the Bay Area in 3 years. Show was derived in large part from their new "I've Seen Enough" CD with some old chestnuts from the Ralph records days ("Face of the Earth", "Theme from Halloween") and a real oldie, "Myonga Von Bontee" from 1976. The addition of 2nd guitarist Jim Hrabetin, long-time O-Type member and one-time Mutant, is a boon. They have finally re-attained the howling and dense live sound of their pre-layoff years and their songwriting is as sharp as ever. Not to mention Bruce Anderson's leads, of course... Masonna made full use of whatever the hell cosmic noise generating apparatus was attached to his belt, hair flying as he manically shook and vibrated the mic/pickup assemblage in his hand which fed into a couple of guitar amps. It almost seemed like a nod was made to the recent Eye/Chu 3"CD on Japan Overseas ("Destroy 2") which finds the duo doing something like 40 songs in 10 minutes - at least once he "counted off" before a one-second-long assault! The Merzbow set was by far the most exciting of the ones I've thus far seen. Not only was the mix clear and distinct (whatever the hell that means for a Merzbow performance), but Masami Akita and co. were all equally heard. Singer (name???), replete with (newly-acquired?) slits in his flesh above the nipples from having performed in a sun dance ritual hanging from his chest, was far more vocal and charismatic than at the Stork Club gig of last year, in which he lost control enough times that he collapsed into the monitors repeatedly. Not as much crotch-stroking, though. Has his technique merely become refined? In any case, his breathy vocalizings were an excellent rhythmic counterpart to the roar. The crowning moment, however, was when two confused SFPD boys came strolling in, hands on gunbelts, trying to locate the source of the noise which must have been very confusing from a passing patrol car (one audience member was heard to say, "they must have thought it was the biggest donut-making machine imagineable and just HAD to check it out"). Shaking their heads, they turned tail after only 30 or so ear protection-less seconds. One leaned over to me on the way out saying, "I've heard a lot of garbage, but THIS is the WORST!". I don't mind, just wish I could have gone.... ---------- Forwarded message ---------- The noise show Saturday Night was loud. But I had earplugs. The B.O.T.H. wasn't that close to being full - maybe 100 people. But those were some lucky bastards. After MX-80 finished a truly retro and boring set of Rick Wakeman covers, Massona bursted onstage without a guitar. Rather around his waist was some new controller device with a heart-shaped mouse-like piece he used to make really great noise. He'd shake it and swing it and also twist nobs on the belt unit to get the house rockin. And he'd yell. But the truly wild part was that he played for about 20 minutes! It was like a Dead Show. Plus, seriously now, he came out for an encore. OK, so the piece he played only lasted 8 seconds, but it was an encore. Merzbow was also great. They came out with even more electronics than last time, and the older guy, he was using a handmade "guitar" which was really an aluminum box with springs as strings. There were pickups too but I didn't get it, really. Very loud, sorta harmonic too. The girl in the corner twisting nobs was bored as ever. The crazy guy came out and took off his shirt, and unbraided his hair, and then started shrieking . He fancies himself el diablo I think. He rolled his eyes back a lot. And he was singing (?) through a pitch shifter which made him sound even eviler. It worked well. There weren't any totally trancendental moments, but overall the set was solid. It was recorded by several interested parties. I may have a line on getting a copy. I also saw Elden (?) and he recognized me too. No Myra however. I had a pretty great time. Oh, and there was a table full of new CD's and even vinyl. One of the vinyl records was 8". I don't know why however. ::j ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: nmorris0@sas.upenn.edu (plasticity) Subject: merzbow schedule? Mama Kin is also owned by Aerosmith and in the past has been known (as are all the Lansdowne clubs) for being a hair-rock type place where the waitresses will ask you over and over if you're sure you don't need another beer and the bouncers will toss you out (I mean really throw you, like in the movies) if they even think you smell like reefer. They do, however, get a couple of coolness points for booking Merzbow on what is traditionally their "no-cover blues Monday" or whatever they called it.... See you there (as long as I recover from my hangover in time) -Sleazy D ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: mason@netcom.com (Mason Jones) Subject: Mini reviews Date: 16 Oct 1996 13:10:40 -0700 Got a bunch of 7" singles recently so here are some very brief reviews of 'em: His Name is Alive/Little Princess "Melody Farm" (Shaolin Temple) Funny little item with HNIA doing something like a collage of a dozen different styles, from pleasant guitar to weird textures. LP's side is a noisier thing, but sort of flowing, not harsh at all. Masonna "Dispersa"/"Susie's Gone" (Self Abuse) Beautiful psychedelic picture-disc (designed by Aube's Akifumi Nakajima). Side A is intensely cut-up noise, while the B-side flows in some weird synth stuff for a change of pace. Great. Iugula-Thor+Sshe Retina Stimulants "Performance Ranges" (Self Abuse) One side by each of these Italian noisemakers. Both are pretty raunchy, raucous noise. Electronic and artificial-sounding, as is their usual. Pretty good stuff; comes with the usual barely-coherent manifesto. Tabata "Children of Woods"/"Meiro" (Fourth Dimension) Great solo single from this member of Zeni Geva and former member of Leningrad Blues Machine, Boredoms, and others. About time someone got him to release something of his own. Side A combines a nicely-picked guitar melody with some harsh noisiness, while the flip is more consistently dirty-sounding. Very nice. Flux Cored Wire (Vinyl Japan) Three tracks of hardcore punk rock in an old-fashioned mold from this Japanese group. If you like Genbaku Onanies, you'll like this. Nothing too special, but it's well-done and fun. Final "Urge"/"Fail" (Fever Pitch) The best release yet from Final as far as I'm concerned. Interesting, flowing textures of sound, something like Organum at times but with a more recognizable guitar presence. It's all blended together into a buzzing, atmospheric whole. The Ass Baboons of Venus (Stingy Banana Records) Difficult to describe this yellow-vinyl offering. The Ass Baboons, on tour soon, are an insane duo doing performance noise shit music. It's fun, it's nonsense, and it's weird stuff. If you like Torture Chorus, Gerogerigegege, Dum Dum TV, and that sort of thing, check this out. Aube "Re-Chant"/"De-Coda" (Drone) Gorgeous package with marbled paper wrapped by two obis holding the single which is on purple vinyl. This time Nakajima uses only a woman's voice as the sound source, and goes for it. The textures are amazing, droning, layered sound. Maybe his best release yet. Truth Decay "White Bunnies"/"St. Vitus" (Anomie) Scott Ayers from the Pain Teens is now in this group, putting his guitar to use in a more rockin' format. This stuff is definitely a harder rock sound than the Pain Teens, but Scott's distinctive guitar sound is still there making it warped enough to stand out. Addresses: Anomie Records, P.O. I've got those releases as well, but we'll have to continue to listen to them alone as supposedly Mr Monde Bruits decided to start doing "house music" or some such of the club-type scene, and is way far away from the Noise tangent. We've only got a sample so far. I would guess the complete shipment would get here sometime in the next month. The title is "Infinitely Orbit," and there's "linner" notes by Takuya Sakaguchi and Jojo, but unfortunately they're all in Japanese. It appears that Ohno did the artwork, which is a bit of a surprise. There's also a selected discography in the folder. If there's any clue in here to the sound source, it's sure not in English (I'm assuming that the Roland SH-2 was used to modify the original sound, not produce it), and I can't compare it to the "Re-Chant" 7" since I haven't heard that one. Lots of ringing, high end oscillations, metallic sounding clashes, and so forth as you move down the audio spectrum on the first track, much simpler mid-range type harshness on the second track, while the 3rd is softer, dark, creepy and complex oscillations, and the 4th continues in a similar vein but minus the creepyness and adding some spacey, echoing sounds that verge on what you'd hear in alot of formal electronic music. Total time: 62 minutes. I'd be curious to hear what other folks have to say about it. Fave noise of the week (so far) goes to the Totemplow CD on Manifold, who ride that low end bucking python for all it's worth.
