The release is an issue of "send me your material and I'll mix it, and I'll send you my material and you mix it" type of arrangement. It's occasionally very interesting, but at other times I can't stay focused on the higher pitched forks that swing in and out of the 2 long tracks. Rich collaboration of the same name, "Solaris," and "Sacrifice"), some of his soundtracks are finally being released on disc. The discs are being put out by Toei Music Publishing Co., Ltd (the date on mine is 1995). It's a Japanese label. My disc is catalog number TMP 2004, and it has "The Mirror" (Zerkalo) and "Stalker" on it. Another disc had only "Andrei Rublev," and another, if I remember correctly, had "Ivan's Childhood" (Ivanovo Detstvo). These three were the only discs at the store. And for us Americans, they were $35 a piece. There is little info in the Cd notes. There is some Russian on it, which looks like it could be notes from the movie (like the cast or the principal people in making the film). None of the songs have titles, and no composer is listed (unless Tarkovsky himself did the music). The only people listed are those who mastered the CD and designed the liner. For my disc, The Mirror takes up 14 tracks while Stalker takes up 7. And the disc is short, too. Thirty-nine minutes. However, and this is the most important part, the disc is very beautiful. The music draws from different styles -- The Mirror starts off with some noisy ambient, which is then broken by traditional folk and some classical voice pieces; Stalker combines space drones in the beginning (reminiscent of early Tangerine Dream), moves into flute and environmental sounds from the movie, and then back out to the drones -- but the overall feeling of the entire disc is slow and subdued. And the all of these different styles work together fabulously instead of feeling discontinuous. If you have some extra cash after the holidays, hunting down this material might be worthwhile. my two cents, Mike ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: coredump@slip.net (Tim Walters) Subject: OPUS 415 #2: Bay Area New Music Marathon Date: 11 Nov 1996 22:43:18 -0800 Common Sense Composers' Collective Presents OPUS415 No. 2 Bay Area New Music Marathon Sunday, November 17, 1996 3 PM - 10:30 PM at The ODC Performance Gallery 3153 Seventeenth St. San Francisco, CA All Day Pass $10.00 The Common Sense Composers' Collective presents OPUS415 No.2, the 2nd Annual Bay Area New Music Marathon. OPUS415 No.2 features over 25 Bay Area composers, including Belinda Reynolds, Pauline Oliveros, David Jaffe, Randy Porter, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, Alvin Curran, Victoria Jordanova, and Brenda Hutchinson, in a diverse mix of works that bridge the gap between the streets and the university. The marathon's seven hours of music ranges from unconstrained improvisation to elaborately notated scores, and represents both emerging and established artists. Come hear such dynamic performers as Pamela Z, Sarah Cahill, American Baroque, Tom Nunn, Tom Heasley, Pacific Sticks, Dave Slusser, Dan Plonsey, The City Winds, and Circular Firing Squad, performing on instruments ranging from solo Mandolin to multiple computers. The casual environment of the ODC Performance Gallery makes it possible for listeners to mingle with performers and composers. BACKGROUND INFORMATION Last Year's premiere event received the following praise: "Common Sense managed to pull together a festival comparable to New York's "Bang on a Can" Marathon, and managed to do it gracefully...The Marathon was a success from virtually every standpoint." Leigh Vanhandel, 20th Century Music "I came away from the concert marveling at the logistics of the event... The programming was excellent, the stylistic range impressive." David Meckler, Paris New Music Review Common Sense is a SF/NYC based collective of eight emerging composers. Now in our fourth year, the main objective of the group has been to explore alternative ways of conceiving and completing new works. The fruits of our first project will be released by CRI on their Emergency Music Series in January, 1997. With last year's premiere marathon OPUS415, we extended our philosophy of collaboration and bridge-building to the creation of an event that showcased the diverse voices of Bay Area Composers. Common Sense was able to bring listeners and composers from different schools and backgrounds together in a casual yet intense environment of music making. We present OPUS415 No.2 with the continued hope of fostering new ideas, generating new connections, and building new bridges. Tom about Stephen Scott +++++++++++++++++++ Few composers achieve true originality in their palette. The twentieth century is filled with a flood of novelties and experimentations that include extended instrumental techniques, electronic glosses, modification and processing. It seem we are awash in 'original' sounds which all sound the same. Occasionally a composer comes along who finds his territory and explores every nook and cranny within it, luxuriating in its richness. Stephen Scott's brillaint forays into the interior of the piano must be included with the prepared piano work of John Cage in the forties and fifties, as well as the player piano machinations of Conlon Nancarrow, in the sixties and seventies as examples of startlingly unique artistic vision. For well over 20 years he has been exploring the insides of the piano with nylon filament and rosinated sticks and an array of other 'exciters' so that without actually striking the keys, the instrument speaks in a new but strangely familiar voice, as harps, mandolins and orchestral strings seem to emerge. Scott has found his own orchestra in there. - from the liner notes by Ingram Marshall "It's hypnotic like light on rolling water, and it leaves you filled not so much with wonder as with peace." - LA Weekly review of "Vikings of the Sunrise" New Albion Records 584 Castro #525 San Francisco, CA 94114 USA t: 415.621.5757 f: 415.621.4711 e: tom@newalbion.com http://newalbion.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: rich path Subject: Something I'm looking for...
