Is this part of the = > interview on the Flying Cowboys disc? Yes, this section is also present. Given what's been said on the list lately, I'm more inclined to accept that this interview _is_ from Reading Rainbow. To my ears, it really doesn't sound like Levar, except in brief passages, but it _could_ be him. And the list-member who said she _definately_ recalls showing this episode to a class seems to confirm that a Reading Rainbow interview= _does_ exist. It could be that the record label got permission to use the audio from the interview in a Promo package that was only intended to have limited distribution. The interview is fairly broad-ranging, but does manage to spend about half it's length on questions directly appropos the album, so this seemed to suggest to me that it was specially made for the Promo. But, as it was the first album she had recorded in many years, perhaps this is also consistant with a Reading Rainbow interview. Some of the questions (particularly the Sky and Horse questions) are a little bit out in left field for a record label interviewer, but quite consistent with Reading Rainbow. Since it was me who declared Geordi dead (at least as far as being the interviewer), I guess I should recant, since I'm no longer so certain. grant.. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: neptune@slip.net Subject: Re: (orb) modulations Date: 04 Mar 1999 10:06:26 -0800 Hey Kids! However, in its defense, I don't think the film was trying to be *THE* definitive history, or complete, or whatever, but just part of the greater whole. I'm inclined to assume that they interviewed whomever they could get ahold of (and they did have quite the range of folks, too!) Perhaps its an open invitation to pick up where they left off? IMHO, the coolest part about that film was finally having faces (and glimpses into people's personalities) to connect to the music I have become so familiar with... (please note, these were kindly contributed by Stephan Hesse and RJ Bijlveld (might have screwed up that spelling, sorry)) so now we have over a dozen complete live shows available (including an LX dj gig from LA '97). also we'd like to announce the official opening (if there is such a thing) of the Orb Remix Audio Archive which was suggested a few weeks ago from the list. basically this is a place for listmembers to contribute their remixes of orb's material, or other unreleased orb remixes. we're starting off pretty slow, just one remix of Assassin available, but it's really cool. it was created by an anonymous listmember and entered in the absOrb contest from '93 and placed pretty well, so comments are welcome on it. the ORAA can be found under the directory ORAA in the archive. i had kind of wanted to get webpages up before i made this update, but doesn't look like that's going to happen. they'll eventually be at http://orb.mocker.org but not quite yet. we're still serving it up ftp-style... so what's the address? ftp.mocker.org/pub/orb/ anonymous login...the live shows can be found under the /live/ directory, and the new Orb Remix Audio Archive can be found under /ORAA/ if you'd like to contribute to the ORAA or you have rare/live stuff for the OAA please contact me. also, there are a few remixes by orb of other bands that i can't identify (under /live/remixes/ if you know that they're still available, please email me and i'll get rid of 'em). in any case, thank you and have a good night. the OAA has left the building. sergio. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Get Your Own Free Pop or Web Based Email and a 10MB Web Site for FREE at: http://www.nettaxi.com! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Chris Johnson Subject: (orb) U.F.Orb Bits on CD Date: 05 Mar 1999 14:09:28 -0800 Two questions: 1) Does anyone on the list have the ability/equipment to convert an audio cassette to an audio CD-R (not an MP3)? Well, today I found a CD-R copy of Dipping into the Cyberworld (the Woodstock set, I think) by the Orb in Strictly Discs in Madison, WI. Is it me, or is the version of Towers of Dub one of the damn best you've ever heard??? I found it incredible -- awesome sampling job on this version. If you haven't heard it yet, it's definitely a must-have. I also enjoyed the version of A huge evergrowing... that is included. Would someone mind sending me a track-time list for this CD so I can compare a REAL CD's track times to those on the CD-R? I want to see how much I got shortchanged on the track times.... Does anyone have any idea why the hell every bootleg is coming on CD-R now instead of the better-quality glass-cut CDs? They always seem to omit some of the tracks. Is someone cracking down on bootlegging? Or is someone making a killing on someone else's music? It's really pissing me off since I'm still required to pay something like $25 US to get copies of these things, which I could make on my home computer. :-( Anyone have any ideas? I disagree for this very reason. I think sampling the most popular song, or any Orb song is too easy. Also, if you listen to some of the others, they are very redundant, sometimes unchanging for 2-3 minutes (Animals comes to mind). I think if LX did do them, he might reuse Orb samples here or there, but definately would have done a MUCH better job. I have yet to hear 1 LX remix that didn't impress me, whereas some of the Floyd mixes are downright bland. Record stores are now trying to eliminaate the middleman so they can pass the savings outo themselves. Most bootleg discs cost a record store between $8-$12 per disc, and mark them up anywhere from $20 to $35 each! (Anyone shop at Evil Clown? RIPOFF!) Now that the owners either have their own means of burning cdrs or have a "discount" cdr dealer, they earn more return off of them. The time difference is simple: pressed cd can hold upto 79:58, whereas cdr can hold a max of 74:10. 80 minute cdrs are not yet commercially available, and are very expensive, so the choice for the disc burners is simple... Another factor is alot of the old distributors have been shut down, so the sources are fewer now than before. Since 1996, Italy, once a haven for bootleg lables, no longer allows bootleg manufacturers in their country, which eliminated some of the biggest companies around (KTS, Primadonna, Great Dane, Alley Kat, Hawk, Mind The Magic, Live Storm...) The Canadian government is now taxing recordable media and making a recompense for recording artists that "are victims" of cdr piracy, but we all know the difference between "Piracy" And "Bootlegs" right? Only true fans buy bootlegs, and typically they own all the liscensed recordings by such artists, and if the record lable is unwilling to cater to the fans... But $25.00 is no bargin for cdrs Gavin (who thinks the Orb shoud rerelease all bootlegs as their own on a fanclub basis) _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Frick" Subject: (orb) Strictly Discs, my comments, and more. Date: 10 Mar 1999 18:23:03 -0600 Fellow orbsters, I just wanted to make it perfectly clear that today I went to the store which had sold me the CD-R of Dipping into the Cyberworld. They gave me an in-store credit, after a bit of a discussion regarding the selling of CD-Rs. I feel that they were very helpful and honest in the return of the CD, even though I know that they really didn't want to do the return. The resolution of the issue was to my satisfaction. I want to rescind every negative comment I made about the store, and recommend them as a great source for rare music. Just be careful when you buy something to make sure that it is NOT a CD-R, if you are the kind of person who cares as much as I do. I personally am a bit embarrassed by my comments, and think that I may have over-reacted in my initial mail regarding the store. I really do like the store, and patronize it as often as I can. They have provided me with many good albums. Furthermore, they do have a copy of Ultra Rare Trax (real CD) for sale if anyone is interested. I already have two copies, so I thought I'd leave it for someone else. Thanks!! OR Would anyone be willing to trade a copy of Brian Eno's Music for Airports for it? (Yeah, I know, it's still in print...but so is Live 93....) This cd is taking up valuable space on my cd tower.... In the meantime, something which may or may not be of interest to pass along: I was listening to the Kris & Dave's You Are Evil (But I Like You) mix of Asylum the other day (I'm getting it to you soon, Nick!), and my wife and baby daughter were in the room. I look at my wife (who's holding the baby), and then I look at my daughter, who is not quite 3 months old. Well, she (my daughter) is bobbing her head up and down to the rhythm, in perfect sync. I thought that was pretty neat, so I mentioned it to my wife. My wife claims that she does that all the time to the Orb (and other similar music). A future "raver," do you think? ;-) Later! In todays age of the digital medium reigning supreme, the term _7" mix_ often simply means _radio edit_ It's a shorter version of the original song (usually) that is a little radio friendly. The 12" mix would be almost the same as the 7" mix but at least 1 or 2 minutes longer (often times more). I was talking about this pinball game with another list member, and thought I'd bring it to the attention to everybody. In 1981, Bally made a game called Centaur. At that time, it was one of the cutting edge games that helped define pinball as an arcade staple. The reason I post this on the Orb list is because one of the game's features was the "Orb Feature". The multi-ball mode on the game was accheived by completing the O,R,B,S targets to enable a ball lock. Once all balls were locked, the game would announce (in a Speak And Spell-ish voice) "Release Power Orbs", thus starting multiball play. Now this game has long been out of circulation, but I did see it in a game room in the Wisconsin Dells last summer. I'm sure there's still quite a few out in pinball resale shops and basements across the U.S. Kind of a strech for an Orb tie-in, but I think this is just another interesting thread I can start (Oh how I love Pinball!) I guess I always thought > that "bootlegs" were always copied or pirated and put onto a CD-R format. I am > finding out that I am wrong - How wrong am I and what's up with stores selling > CD-R bootlegs? Okay, usually bootlegs are produced by some kind of record label that has access to real CD writting equipment and printers and whatnot and so forth. To my knowledge, most (if not all) orb bootlegs are no longer being made except in CD-R format. Whether or not CD-R copies of bootlegs are "legitimate" is a tough question. It depends on the way you define legitimate. The problem that most people have on this list (I believe) with CD-R copies of bootlegs is that 1) Record stores have an annoying tendancy to charge as much for a CD-R copy of a bootleg than for the original bootleg itself. This is problematic for several reasons: a) CD-R's are cheap, and anyone could simply download the artwork and the appropriate MP3's and make a CD-R themselves. b) Nobody wants to pay $20-30 for something that they could normally obtain for like 2 and c) Most places don't care enough to bother to get 80 min CD-R's and often portions of songs or entire tracks are missing from CD-R bootlegs. 2) The idea of buying something and getting a cheap reproduction bothers people. I personally have no problems being sold a CD-R as long as I know that that's what it is beforehand and have decided that I'm willing to pay for a reproduction. Bootleg - a recording that is unliscensed by an artist's record label or the artists themselves. Typical bootleg material is Live recordings made with personal recording equipment or copied from radio broadcast, out of print b-sides/remixes, demo recordings, or other related media related to an artist that is usually inferior to liscensed material. I think the bifggest problem with cdr bootlegs is 1) No way to tell how many have been produced (this can affect collectability.) 2) no resasle value. Good luck trying to sell one of these to Disc Go Round- if they give you $3 than you're doing pretty good. Gavin _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? It will be released in the not-too-distant future. I was in London about five or six years ago, and somebody said, "Have you heard [The Orb's] "Little Fluffy Clouds?" I said, "What's that?" and he gave me the CD, and I heard my Electric Counterpoint in there. I began to realize that in other instances groups have either taken pieces of mine or obviously listened to their procedures. I think that's great! I mean, I'm fourteen years old, I'm at Birdland, I'm listening to Kenny Clarke, and then I'm on-stage at Queen Elizabeth Hall and there's Eno, and later when I was in Berlin doing Music For 18 Musicians, there was David Bowie, and now there's these Techno guys. I mean, it's a two-way street. It's that back and forth. Bach was doing the dance suite during the Baroque period. What are dance suites? They came out of dances! They didn't fall from the Moon! And that was the way it was. Stravinsky used Folk Music! Bartok's music life was at one with collecting Folk songs. So, if you like, this is a restoration of normalcy after this weird period. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Brian M. Fire + Water. It's so much fun to remix, since there is two versions of almost every song on the 2 cd set. Jupiter is one of my favorite System 7 tracks! I have a kick ass remix of the track, that I did myself. If anyone is interested in knowing. The Assassin Absorb mix was done by me. I didn't want to gloat about it, since I won second place and all. I wanted the mix to stand on it's own, without personal judgement. It has some hiss, yes, but it's the equipment I had back in 94'. Why isn't there more people on this list, that have Orb remixes. Yea I know the double disk is great but the single has little sound bites and slight variations of the original UK version that can only be found on this disk. IF you ever get the chance to experience it, if you haven already, you really should. Steve Hillage helped produce some of Orbs older stuff (like Blue Room on UFOrb) basically, I just recently started checking out the S7 stuff, and I'm digging it heavily :) I actually got my first S7 album today 'golden section' (a change from the 4 eps & remix album I had ;) and I like it a lot. found it in bargain bin today for $10 (compared to the usual $30 shop prices here :P so it was pretty cool :) also got HIA's Freefloater for $9 (which I like a LOT) and Spacetime Continuum 'Remit Recaps' for $7. hmm bargain bins can be handy, though the selection is usually pretty shitty :) I also spotted a few copies of 808 State's 'Don Solaris' for about $9 (as opposed to the usual $29 price) so that would be cool if I didn't have it already. oh, and I saw a copy of Orb's 2nd Peel Sessions cd in a 2nd hand store for about... $10-12 I think (didn't look too closely) Agust "Nemesis1" - aaj@centrum.is - ICQ: 1290264 - http://www.kosmic.org/~nemesis1 Free Your Mind - Remove the Brain :) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Brad Subject: (orb) just testing. He and Miquette Giraudy have been consistent collaborators with the orb, from abtu (back side of the moon, for instance) all the way to orblivion (they co-wrote 'ubiquity,' prolly my favorite track on the album.) they are also an impeccable live act in their own right. just for the record, as the ol' marillion song goes. ;) _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I just wanted to add my opinion of Steve Hillage -- Incredible guitarist. My favorite System 7 Album is actually 777 - '777' (I believe it's the US release of System 7 - 'System 7' which has some various differences). This album contains collaborations with Orb, Paterson, Thrash, Greg Hunter, and Andy Falconer among others so there's plenty of Orb-type influence to be had here, and I believe Hillage's guitar truly shines on this CD. I noticed there wasn't anyone replying as this being their favorite System 7 album, and I think that may be because of the mainstream radio sounding "middle" of the disc. Anyways, my point: if you like Hillage's guitar, there's plenty more to be had outside of System 7 as well. There's an old solo album he had called "For To Next And Not Or" that includes some odd tracks at the end that were included on a bonus disc (on my CD copy anyways) from the original release that are pretty good. Also, I was in my local music shop last night and saw a new Spacemen 3 release of about 6 live tracks. I'm not a big Spacemen 3 fan but I know there's fans on the list -- if this is a 'rare' item, I'll be happy to pick it up for someone. After talking with the shop owner for awhile about Spacemen 3, Spirtualized, etc; he threw on a CD by Spectrum, apparently the guy in Spectrum and the guy in Spacemen 3 were the basis for Spiritualized, right? Someone tell me if I'm making sense and if so, anyone have an opinion on Spectrum? The disc he put on for me was a bit thick but pretty trippy, and he said there was another album I should hear instead so I'll wait to form my own opinion. Later, Scott NP: Sudden Sway 'KO-Opera' -- and if anyone has anything by Sudden Sway, I would love to trade as this has to be one of the hardest bands to collect! # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Gavin Miller Subject: (orb) Spacemen 3 family tree Date: 30 Mar 1999 23:38:10 -0800 (PST) > Also, I was in my local music shop last night and saw > a new Spacemen 3 > release of about 6 live tracks. Spectrum is A band I like alot, the most recent stuff being very noisey, minimalistic and dark. Forever Alien is suggested for a listen, but is quit dissonant. As you can tell by the cover art of all the recernt Spectrum releases, Sonic is very fond of archaic synthesisers, modulators and mostly his Theramin. Spacemen 3 J Spaceman (Jason Pierce) ---> Spiritualized Sonic Boom (Richard Kember)---> Sonic Boom (solo), Spectrum, Experimental Audio Research Pete Bassman ---> Darkside, Experimental Audio Research and a few others from time to time: N. Brooker -Percussion, Rosco - Drums, John Mattock -Percussion, Mark Refoy - guitar, Will Carruthers - bass vibrations, Richard Formby - Guitar, Alex Green - Saxophone, Owen Johnson -violin And for those who don't know Spacemen 3 split around 1989 due to the fact Jason & Sonic hated each other. Their last studio album, Recurring was split in half, Sonic's work first, Jason's second, divided by "When Tomorrow Hits", their version of a Mudhoney song. If you like Early Spiritualized, this is right up your alley. Gavin _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
