From: Chris Moore Subject: (orb) Plateau (Andy's Dub) / Orbscure Trax, still fecked on Date: 02 Apr 2000 01:42:12 +0100 To the Orb list, I recently checked the copy of Plateau (Andy's Dub) on MoonDoggs FTP, and it _still_ isn't fixed (pops and skips start at around 10:40, and get worse from there). PLEASE can someone upload a new copy, as there are just too many clicks to "fix" in a wave editor, and I am unable to find Orbscure anywhere else. Also do we know what's up with A. Bryans' FTP? I just can not access it. But this week end was also cool. Bought 10 copies of the Semisonic CD (for those who asked). Semisonic seems to be a nice rock/pop group. The Orb remix is one of the saddest they ever done. Feels like FFWD without the Robert Fripp touch. Remixed by LX and Simon Phillips (guest : Tom Green). It's not a complete massacre of the song (like the Cranberries remix or the NIN one), but like a follow-up of the original song (It's called The Morning After). Of course, LX uses samples and voice distortions, but what is surprising is the intro chords (electronic, not real). Well, you've got to hear the remix to know what I mean. Misses the Andy Hughes touch, though. Found the Youngones CD with the remix homage to the Orb. And a brand new copy of Chill Out on LP (in HMV), plus "Orb in Dub" in mint condition. Found also "Berlin Unwrapped", a 5 X 12" with tracks by Sun Electric and Thomas Fehlmann : Sun Electric : Flat and Endless 7.22 Time Unlimited : Men From Wadodem 6.34 Ocean Club : Die Sonne 4.20 Thomas Fehlmann : Hermosa Beach 4.23 Saw also a 12" promo of the Orb : Toxygene (Ganja Kru remix). Never saw it before... Didn't see the acetate of The Orb : Steam Power (Tom Middleton remix) mentioned in the last issue of Musik by Deep Dish. I don't think there was actually any element here still remaining from the original perhaps for the "Babylon" sample that appears mixed throughout the whole song. I'd also say I enjoyed the Orb's mix of "The Perfect Drug" after getting sick to death of the original, for it's total new Pomme Fritz styling and it's disjointed feeling. Wow ... everyone's been picking my least favorite Orb remixes! =) I'll have to go back and listen to those with new ears. Here's my standard picks: Suzuki "Satellite Serenade" (trans asian express) -- Just for the opening David Ambientborough bit alone ... incredibly spacious. Overall simple & effective. Mike Oldfield "Sentinel" (nobel prize mix) -- Some intricate layering and development going on here ... builds up to an edgy climax but maintains a deep, subliminal vibe. I would mention the Material "Mantra" remix, but I'm kind of burned out on it, actually. Runners-up are Front 242 "Rhythm of Time" (victor the cleaner) and Depeche Mode "Happiest Girl" (pulsating orbital vocal mix) Both are quite unusual-sounding for the Orb, and very chunky and, I daresay, spunky. And favorite Orb-related remixes: Miranda Sex Garden "Gush Forth My Tears" (interest at source mix) by Thrash -- Great goth-club dance track. ;) Fortran 5 "Love Baby" (carniverous marine mammal with short limbs) by Thrash -- Oof ... that groove ... Killing Joke "Requiem" (floating leaf always reaches the sea dub mix) by Thrash & Greg Hunter -- Greg Hunter's electro-dub magic is good in any context, but for some reason it's particularly interesting here with rock-n-roll. -=Seofon Ambient Temple of Imagination > http://www.a-toi.com > http://www.mp3.com/atoi double-disc anthology Y2KAOS now available! > http://www.a-toi.com/y2kaos # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: seofon@slip.net (Seofon) Subject: (orb) samplespotting fest 2000 Date: 22 Apr 2000 11:45:44 -0800 I've happened upon a great source of Orb samples, namely The Tape-beatles. Kid Koala is indeed a treat, especially live. Looking forward to this show as the first time I saw him was with DJ Food and Coldcut. Also caught him with Mixmaster Mike / Money Mark, but the Coldcut show was even better. Also worth noting is that Kid Koala's live band Bullfrog are on this tour. I recently picked up 5-song self-titled EP by Bullfrog and it's very, very cool. Amon Tobin's on some but not all dates, too.
