From: "Stewart Nolan" Subject: (orb) A Huge Evergrowing Staircase? Date: 01 May 2000 12:46:47 GMT Hi, the subject is the name of something I found on napster over the weekend. It's quite a hard house interpretation of Loving You, only using the synthy bit as a refrain, and some muddy/unintelligble vocal snatches, which don't seem to appear in any of the other versions. The ID 3 tag states it's from 2000, and it sounds as if it has been mastered from vinyl. Is anyone aware of this, or is it most likely to be a fan remix? Date: 09 May 2000 14:04:01 -0500 (CDT) Hello orb people, one of my friends just emailed me a site which has a database of samples and their sources. it is very well arranged. obviously I typed in orb to see what samples had been listed. and there were only about 20 some odd samples listed. I thought to myself that in an average few orb digests more sample sources are talked about than are listed on the site. there is a form which you can add samples. i suggest we do so. the site is: http://www.ee.pdx.edu/~alf/samples/samples.html this site also ranks bands in relation to how many samples are listed. right now orb is ranked 22 out of 500 or so. i somehow suspect that we could get the orb up to the 1st spot rather quickly ... and that would be cool. so instead of just sitting around and waiting for cydonia, go enter in a few samples for the glory fo the orb. merrick ps. you should probably look through the syntax section first so you don't mess up the database. ________________________________________________________________ The main thing to understand is that we are imprisoned in some kind of work of art. - Terrence McKenna phone address (312)492-7461 800 S. Hey--these things happen! heh as a postman on Iceland (actually, these days I deliver packages for customs, but that's the same building :) I can really emphasise that point. if the other countries are only 1/10th of the way to being as messy as things are over here, then I wouldn't be surprised if packages get lost etc... incindentally, JC is from Paris, France, and certain few french friends of mine are of the simple opinion that the french postal service is the utter complete pits. they've lost so many packages they were sending each other, one of them had gotten to the point of 1) having less than 0% trust of the postal service 2) if he had known from the start that I was a postman (even if I was working as one in a different country), he'd have automatically put me on /ignore on irc ;) can't blame him, he never got the package (3 cds) I tried to send him as a surprise bday gift :( (and I forgot to send it in registered mail :/ *** golden rule of thumb #1: send your valuables in registered mail. *** (I've broken that one myself a few times ;) at worst, you can turn in your receipt and bitch around and ask them to try to track it down. it will take time, but the sending should be tracked down to the last known "check" point. all registered mails have a tracking number. and at each "stop" they are checked to make sure they are where they belong. I'm only speaking from what I know about the Icelandic postal service (it sucks! it sucks!) but: as a rule, when sending a registered mail to somebody, *only* the recipient may sign for the delivery, and should preferably show IDs too, and the person must sign full name & social security number. the only possible exceptions are when the recipient is a baby (too young to sign etc) and when the mail is addressed to a company (in which case the person who accepts the sending must sign with full name & social security number, and show IDs too (well, a lot of us are kinda slack about that, but... ;) it's only a few $s extra for that extra safety _and_ some minimal insurance ($50 over here). hmm I guess I'll stop here and not tell you some of the stupid behindthescenes horror stories about fubars over here ;) Agust "Nemesis1" - aaj@centrum.is - ICQ: 1290264 - http://nemesis1.cjb.net w00p! :P # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Agust 'Nemesis1' Arni Jonsson" Subject: Re: (orb) ATT: *MoonDogg* and the rest of you! However, I did not have a good experience with him. Just a data point, not a personal attack. Others' mileage clearly varies, but that doesn't make my experience any less valid or pertinent. Also, as a side note, if you live in a country with a worse-than-average mail system, please have the courtesy to warn your trading partners, so they know what they are getting into, and can take appropriate steps. Now for the off-topic bit: I still have LiquidW killfiled, so I missed his original post, but I really can't let his revisionism (as quoted by others) slide by. So, perhaps a short historical recap is in order: A year or so ago, I received a couple of unprovoked, abusive, profanity-laced private emails from him after we disagreed during a discussion onlist. I told him to sod off, killfiled him, and reported him to abuse@aol.com. He and a couple of friends then proceeded to mailbomb me, subscribe me to porno mailing lists, etc. ...the usual unimaginative sorts of things. A while later, he posted that he was going to be traveling across America, and would like to meet and/or crash with fellow Orblisters on his way. I posted, pointing out that if someone behaves in the manner LiquidW does online, you might not want to meet them, or have them sleeping in your home. And yes, I characterized him as a thug. He took offense to this, for some reason. ;) (And another round of mailbombing, from different accounts, of course, took place.) YMMV in regard to LiquidW, but that doesn't change his actions towards me. That is hopefully my last post on the subject. I apologize for the necessity of making it. If anyone wants to continue this, please feel free to take it to private email (with one obvious exception). Well over a year ago (circa February, 1999), I made several mix tapes for him; in exchange, he was to make for me an Orb video compilation. After a LONG time, he responded that he was busy with school, and I said "that's fine, take your time." However, after another LONG time, I emailed him several times, to which NONE were responded. (And I KNOW his email account was still active, 'cause he was at that time still active on the Orb list....) I feel somewhat bad about badmouthing Nick--I'm *not* a vindictive person; in fact, some have called me TOO tolerant. However, I know now that this was not an isolated incident. What I sent him wasn't valuable--only a few "homemade" cassette compilations, which only set me back a couple bucks--so it's not the money that I'm worried about. Caveat emptor indeed! :-( Vince (who's grateful that it wasn't an original copy of the Aubrey Mixes that he sent!) ;-) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Howat, Simon" Subject: RE: (orb) U F Orb Triple LP for sale Date: 19 May 2000 13:44:11 +0100 One thing I always wondered about the sealed UFOrb, mine was sealed in blue plastic, whereas my friend's was sealed in black plastic. I reckon anybody who is stupid enough to deal with him >deserves all he or she gets. I'd have to say that I found this fellow pretty unpleasant as well, although he did pay on time + the check didn't bounce, which is really all one can ask. What was your experience with him? He said a record was damaged in the post; I got him to return it and found him another with the intention of claiming the damages off the post office - however it turned out to be fine apart from a slight bend on the cover which looked like he'd done himself and I wasn't really in any position the make a claim on the record. Having had to shell out for another record, transatlatic postage twice he then came back and complained to me again. He is threatening to sue me, report me for fraud to every place he can (UK and US post office, EBAY, customs, tax office etc), to watch all EBAY auctions I have and report even the slightest discrepancies, to post accusations against me to multiple lists and a whole bunch of other things... He has a serious problem it seems, and I can safely say that he is the most obnoxious individual I have ever dealt with over the internet. Here's what he says: "...I'm a member of enough mailing lists, and have enough friends on-line from the UK, that I should hear about it if you do. Then I can take further legal action against you! And please be stupid enough to add something to your website, End-Of-Auction emails, and/or auction descriptions. I'm only an asshole when provoked. But when I am, I excel at it." THIS is funny. At the same time I read this message from Chris Johnson, A thread exists on a completely separate mailing list about him. Read below, Names have been removed to protect the innocent.... I'm not making this stuff up, check the "IDM list" archives. Cora ______________________________________________________________________ >in regards to Chris Johnson > >I've just dealt with this guy via EBAY and he is the biggest asshole I've >ever dealt with. But when I am, I excel at it." One thing though, it does crack me up that someone like him can think he has friends! ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Robert Jan Bijleveld" Subject: RE: (orb) Up to date discography - where? As you know I received about 14 live soundboard Orb tapes about a year ago. This guy a got them from had a sort of inside connection so I informed if he had more tapes. Finally today a received a letter from him with the stuff he has. Unfortunately he doesn't want to trade anymore, he wants some hard cash for the tapes. All tapes are soundboard recordings. Considering the demo stuff, I suppose they are direct copies of the masters. For all demos he asks 15 UKP. For the live tapes 10 UKP. Here's the stuff (I filtered out the ones I already have): Demo's: 1) Loving You (60 minute original)(Quality not bad, levels to high in some places). 2) OOBE *Programmed mix *Live mix *Pool mix 3) Plateau *Main mix *No trash nurofen mix *Thrash solo post nurofen *Ambient Type mix LX solo *All hands on decks 2AM maternal 4) Orbert (50 minute one track demo of FFWD) 5) Godpiece *Original *Easter eggs a crackling shell *Moist cow vs. Towels of Rub *Kris Needs mix 6)Demo compilation (Quality not very good on some tracks) *System7/Sunburst music 2 funk 2 *LFC *Earth *Backside of the moon *Supernova at the end of the universe *Towers of Dub *Star 6&789 *Perpetual dawn 7)KLF Demo Dat *Brooklyn *Borrowed love *Justified and Ancient 8)KLF The White Room (full demo of album) LIVE TAPES 1) Cambridge 91 2) Brixton (Mission 92) 23/10/92 3) Manchester 14/4/93 4) New York 17/10/93 5) Cambridge Corn Exchange 19/11/93 6) Cardiff University 22/11/93 7) Exeter University 23/11/93 8) Birmingham 24/11/93 9) Leicester University 25/11/93 10) Brixton Academy (Allnighter 1st set) 27/11/93 11) Brixton Academy (Allnighter 2nd set with live dog on the mix) 28/11/93 12) Quart festival 23/7/94 So all together the total costs will be 240 UKP. My suggestion is that we'll combine the forces of the mailing list. If we all pay together and set up a tree we will all be able to have this stuff at all small price. My suggestion is that all interested people mail me so I can make a plan. The idea is to split the amount. All people send me their part. I buy the stuff, put it all unedited on CDR, mail it to a few people who also have a CD-Recorder, etc, etc. Off course we have to see how we deal with shipping and costs of the CDRs. Could all people with ideas, suggestions, interest and patience please mail me. Please mail privately, not to the list. Wow, that's the longest mail I ever sent to the list. In my opinion we need to skip the idea of burning CDRs of all the stuff because the total of CDRs would be something around 30. My new idea is to make high quality MP3s of all stuff. This will be a lot cheaper so more people would be interested. All stuff on MP3 format will fit on 3 or 4 CDRs. The price of 4 CDRs is about 3 pounds, so that won't be a problem to most of us. I had some questions about the idea and with this I try to answer them: Q) Will the US people also be able to get this? A) Yes, this will also be available in US, the idea is that I burn for example 3 copies, send one to the US, one to UK and one for Europe, the people who get the CD also burn some CDs etc, etc. Q) Is it possible to get a selection of the stuff? A) No we're going for the full package. Especially with the new idea to do it in MP3 format, I don't think the price will be low enough to get a copy. Q) What about payments? A) I'm still working on this so if any of you has suggestions don't hesitate. At the moment the best I can think of is that all interested people send me the amount to buy the stuff (240 UKP split by the number of people), the people I send out to will pay extra for the CDRs. All people in the next step will pay the money for the CDRs to their contact person (in this way we don't have much international posting). But this is my idea for the moment, like I said all suggestions are welcome. IMPORTANT. I'm starting a database to put all people in, could all interested people (also the ones that allready mailed me) send me a mail with the following details: *Name *e-mail address *address *Zip code *City *State (US only) *Country *CD Recorder (Yes or No) Please put ORB CDR TREE as subject. Burning is no problem, I counted quickly, but out of 38 people we have 23 CD recorders. Kind of sidestepping here, but I have 2 FM copies of the Glasgow Barrowlands 3/20/97 show, 1 from BBC UK FM, 1 from Belgium FM. THe anouncers both id the show as 3/20/97, but the Belgium Broadcast doesn't have this sample, and although the set's the same, the song's are not identical... The shows aren't the same, that's obvious. Does anyone know which one's the real 3/20/97 and which one's not (and what is it then?) One of the better ones I have found is Wire. it focuses on new music whether it be classical, jazz, electronic or whatever. Coil was on the cover last month. You should be able to find it at any large chain book store. oh and all of you orbsters should take some time away from what you are supposed to be doing and play with the flash sequencer on http://www.ninjatune.net/ninja/artists/amontobin/index2.html you can mix amon tobin's samples together and it is really fun. it is under the supermodifier link. all you need to do is download the flash 4 plug in if you don't have it. If you are not familiar with Amon's music it will give you a taste. His new albulm like his other ones is ausome. but that is just my opinion. merrick ________________________________________________________________ The main thing to understand is that we are imprisoned in some kind of work of art. - Terrence McKenna phone address (312)492-7461 800 S. Lessee, top five songs that might benefit from an Orb makeover.... Well, actually, I think these songs are fine--nay, perfect--as is, but an Orb remix might prove interesting: 1. Good Vibrations (The Beach Boys) 2. Moving in Stereo (The Cars) 3. Cars (Gary Numan) 4. When Doves Cry (Prince & the Revolution) 5. True Faith (New Order) Hey, speaking of Prince, did I hear correctly that he's got his sanity back somewhat and is going by his true name again? (Yes, "Prince" *is* his birthname....) And speaking of New Order, did I hear correctly that they are getting back together again? Later!
