Orb related question to all (sorry if I missed it the first time)? I recently purchased an old orb cd on e-bay and am sure the quality must have been better when it was pressed. In years to come I hope to still be listening to my orb collection in the old peoples home. Apart from the obvious, does anyone have any suggestions for cd data preservation? Should the complete set be reburn't every 10 or 20(?) years onto (silver) discs, or kept on hard disc? I just joined the list and as you, I'm wondering who's here and if there's any activity out here. Anyway, if there's anyone out there, I'm 17, my real name is Leca Radu, male. Let me explain why I like Orb: in 2000 I became a fan of Jean-Michel Jarre, and now I'm a huge fan, and without bragging maybe the most active JMJ fan in Romania. However, after a while I became interested in other electronic acts as well, and so I began to listen to Underworld, FSOL, Orbital, Leftfield, Apollo 440, Chemical Bros, Fatboy Slim etc. But in Romania, this kinda music is extremely hard to find, and so I had heard of The Orb before, but couldn't listen to any of their music. That is, until I made a trip to Turkey and found there a single with Toxygene. I absolutely loved everything on that single! WoW! PLus I discovered some live album from 93 on MP3, and I loved it aswell, and so I want to hear more and to know more 'bout them! So, if anyone can help me, where could I find albums to download, and, in general, info 'bout this band, or some other mailing lists I can subscribe to? I'm a real beginner, but willing to learn, so help me! I can tell you about Jarre, if you want :0) If anyone of you is Romanian or has heard of Romanian Orb fans, please let me know (although the chances are very low :0) Another question: I found an album called "2001: A Space Orbyssey" on a FTP site. Is this an Orb album? Anyway, the music is great. Bye for now! Been an Orb fan since 1993, when I bought UF Orb on a whim from Echoes in PA. I just about died when I got it, because I thought it was SO weird. It was nothing like anything I'd heard before. I listened to it, left it on the shelf, and didn't open it for another 6 months. During the summer of 93, I flew to visit my cousin, and took that CD on the plane. First time I'd heard it in headphones. Anyway, I listened to it carefully, loved every minute of it, and bought every damned Orb CD I could find. I now have all their official albums, all of their singles, and most of their remixes on other artists' singles. I've got damn near 75 Orb or Orb-related CDs now. Great stuff; keep it coming, Alex!! :) Also I have all the Bobs from the Badorb. Great stuff. :) -=brian=- # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Meredith, Justin" Subject: (orb) auntie aubrey 2 Date: 05 Sep 2001 12:13:02 -0400 i am really digging this album. i noticed Alex is still using the Electribes to mix. We are all grieving for those lives that were lost because of this senseless act. I felt compelled to write because of the recent acts of discrimination towards Arab Americans, and hoped that if we all band together, we can bring justice to those who TRULY deserve it. Please, remember that justice is not served by striking blindly out to those of the same ethnicity as the suspected terrorists. Remember that many members of the Muslim community were present at the time of this heinous act, and are most certainly enduring the same loss and sadness as the rest of us. I write this because I am saddened by reports of Arab American people being attacked, and I hope that all of you out there are more open minded than those who committed these terrible crimes against people who did not deserve such hatred. Please, spread the word. I am sending all my love and strength to those who have been affected by these terrible acts of violence on New York, and pray that you and your families are safe. What we are doing is NOT enough. A pilot got through the metal detectors without proper identification. A fellow co-worker GOT THROUGH WITH A POCKET KNIFE!!! This is a VERY severe problem, especially in light of Tuesday's events. It is too easy to get through security with a weapon. I have created a potential scenario: You take a razor and tape it to the inside of your belt, near where the belt buckle is. It could also be taped to the bottom of your shoe. On your carry-on, you bring a toothbrush that has been cut down the middle on one of the ends. You also bring some kind of tape in your carry-on, so once you board the aircraft, you can go inside the bathroom and securely tape the razor inside the toothbrush - creating a makeshift knife (sharper than most conventional knives!). You are then capable of a hijacking. WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE We NEED armed federal agents to administer airport security at the security check points. Airport security, from what I understand, is administered by independent companies that pay minimum wages to their employees. We NEED to make it mandatory to place federal agents (armed with taser guns) on ALL commercial flights - international and domestic. This means that the federal government may have to set up a new a new agency for terrorism and air travel. THEIR IS NO WAY TO PREVENT WEAPONS FROM GETTING ON PLANES!!!! The sooner we Americans realize this, the safer we ALL will be. On the off chance it would be good, I drove 2 hours to Atlanta to see LX and DJ Lewis spin all night long after seeing their names next to the Orb on a flyer. A friend drove 2 hours from another direction, and we met up and went inside. What followed was some of the best music I've ever heard. It's the only time I've stayed at a club until the 'real' lights were turned on. We were the last people out of there. It turns out it was just le petite Orb, but I'm glad I got to see it because I've never heard of LX and DJ Lewis spinning together anytime after that.... I know there's a recording of this show. I had a really bad copy once. If anybody has this, please get in touch. (I also finally have the ReadyMade Uro-Breaks CD on its way to me; can't wait to hear it...) Also, there is an OceanClub compilation CD out there that has Shuttle from SE Berlin, Fehlmann's Fishy song, and a couple other goodies, including the "Don't Touch Me Tomato" song that LX has been dropping into his DJ sets here and there. Well worth picking up, if you can find it (my copy is promo-only, I don't know if there was a commericial release). Date: 20 Sep 2001 22:30:59 -0700 I have been a huge fan since I first heard them in '93 at a rave..... But I would have to say my major Orb moment came in August of '99. I was in Regina, Saskatchewan and one of my best friends had just gotten married that afternoon. There was a GIANT party going on at her parents farm. I was feeling a little overwhelmed by the big sky (being from a mountainous region and all) so I wandered out to the wheat fields, lay down and stared at the stars for awhile. Then I got back up and went to my tent to sleep. I put on U. F. Orb and slipped on the headphones. As I was listening I decided to see the stars again so I poked my head out the tent. I feel asleep that way. It was wicked. (Real Networks sued and then bought Streambox, to kill Ripper and VCR.) RA2WAV, which is also out there, is an earlier incarnation of Ripper; Ripper is much better.
