From: "Chain Reaction" Subject: (orb) New System7 album! Date: 01 Oct 2001 10:05:55 +0100 Dear Music Friends! Yes, yes, it's called Seventh Wave, and it's the long-awaited successor to the Power of Seven album. I know, Golden Section was the follow-up to PoS, but I rather not talk about that album... Of course there's also a collaboration with the good Dr. ('Soft Rain')! Musically, it continues where PoS ended, which can only be a good thing. They've minimized the collaborations this time, which resulted in a more consistent sound. Glad to see Steve and Miquette are back with a solid album...long time no see fellaz! Just low-key, I guess. > Why is everyone so concerned with its rareness? So > they can make big $$ on Ebay someday? Speaking for myself (and a handful of fellow fans and people with whom I've discussed this), I just thought it was a great "internet era" (shudder) concept, a great way to run a new, "modern" label. They put a streaming sample up on the web site. You (the fan) go and listen to the sample(s). If you like it/them, you order the record. On a certain date they count up however many orders they've gotten and then press that many. And that's *supposed* to be it (the web site says "pressed and deleted"). Great concept. Sure, part of it may be collectibility/trainspottery (the quantities cited for the first three were all under 500), but part of my (only *slightly* negative) reaction to the re-press of 1-3 is that it dilutes somewhat what I thought was a great idea for a label, if that makes any sense. I, too, have friends who, like you, "missed out" on BOBs 1-3 and I'm glad for them that they'll have a chance to get copies. I guess I still hope the repress is a one-time thing, though, something they're doing because so many interested people missed out on the launch. I still hope that from now on they stick to their guns re: "pressed and deleted." If that makes me "elitist," then so be it. I guess that would make the whole concept for the label "elitist," no? Even before they announced this repress, I was thinking that it'd be a cool idea to wait six months or a year, and then issue a compilation CD of that period's BOBs (including b-sides), but to stick to the limited initial quantities for the vinyl singles. I'm all for the music being "out there" and available to all, especially since it's been so damn good. > is it just my noncapitalist radical roots showing? Radical, schmadical. We are talking about collecting records here, after all. If you truly want to "beat the system" and strike a blow against capitalism, find someone who bought the MP3 subscription and get them to copy the tracks for you. Not that I condone such action: I'd rather see you support the label. This whole discussion illustrates my original impetus for posting the "what do you think about the repress?" question in the first place: because I had mixed emotions about it and was wondering if anyone else felt the same. And I'll be the first to admit that had I missed out, I'd be thrilled with the repress and probably having similar reactions to what you perceive as "elitism." During the pre-Cydonia days, I was one of many who was calling for those lucky few with v1 and v2 CDRs to share them with the rest of us. And I feel right sheepish about having typed such a long post about this issue; I'm sure I don't need to remind anyone that there are bigger problems in the world than whether there are 500 or 5000 copies of the SE Berlin 12" in circulation. But I'll send it anyway, I guess... flame away... There are people who buy them for the rarity. They should at least change the packaging, or offer a CD. They aren't doing anything new. Most records on small lables in general are very limited, but they just don't make it known with exact numbers. So unless you consider all record sales bullshit I don't understand why it's elitist. I never got the sense that anyone is bragging either. It was more excitment about the records they got, or displeasure with the services of Badorb. I think that it's nice to have some Orb type releases that can be talked about on a regular basis. It helps keep things on topic. That's a good thing I guess. I'm not too clear as to what "chuffed" means; is that a colloquialism? I think it more has to do with, say, one's economic status. If one can't afford something he wants, it becomes elitist?! Didn't we all wait months for the site to actually take orders? I think any "orb completist" would have found themselves in such a line... Hi, This whole elitist "Bobs" thread is just too wierd. This whole limited pressing thing is bullshit. Who and why is it being promoted? I find it selfish and elitist. Why is everyone so concerned with its rareness? So they can make big $$ on Ebay someday? So they could be the ONLY ones who have these releases and then tease everyone else who don't have it? Sounds like a bunch of spoiled kids with their baseball cards. I am also an Orb completist but sure didn't find myself in the line to get those Bobs. I guess I will be the begging for it later ;) This sure isn't why I'm into the Orb. Why is this even happening? Does this whole elite Bob collector thing bother anyone else or is it just my noncapitalist radical roots showing? Why is this sort of thing promoted anyway? But I did make it to Atlanta to the Orb show back in April. At that time, Simon (the very nice bassist) said they were planning to come back to TX this fall...and that they really enjoyed Austin. Also, another friend of mine at the show also talked to one of the sound guys and confirmed that was the plan. However, with everything that has happened so far this fall, I am guessing plans may have changed. But keep the hope alive!!!! I have a subscription for BOBs and TOGs 1-10. My TOGs 1-3 FINALLY arrived yesterday, and while my subscription was for size medium, I got size XL. Had XL been the only option at the time I placed my order, I would have skipped the TOGs. I've asked Garphoo to replace them immediately. If I don't hear back from him soon, I'm considering doing a chargeback on the whole subscription mess with my credit card company. I also haven't received BOB 4 or 4.5 yet. Unhappy subscriber. Again. Ah well. Date: 26 Oct 2001 18:49:07 +0800 Alright, so he's visiting Hobart of all places to DJ and skipping Perth, Adelaide and Sydney completely. Alright. That's one of about two reasons to be jealous of Tasmanians, the other being something that Tasmanians keep to themselves because i'll be stuffed if i know what it is. 'Scuse me, i'm just going to have a bloody good sulk about this - Virgin Blue's not offering budget flights from Western Australia until later in December, and about the only good thing about this tour itinerary is the evil feeling i get knowing that Sydney also misses out. (Heehee.) Not that it's very much trouble to get to Melbourne from Sydney, but i suppose Melbourne is the music capital of the country.. Ah well, i probably couldn't afford to go to the gig even if he were playing in Perth anyway. I'll just console myself by listening to that boffo mix of Assassin from the 1998 BBC Radio 1 session - it's a gem, for those of you who haven't heard it: quite aggressive stuff, but awesome in execution and the demented SubGenius ranting in the background works the mood of the song brilliantly. Actually, those who aren't aware of the SubGenius and who'd like to hear some of the most demented shit it's ever been my own personal (mis)fortune to perceive could do much worse that mosey over to http://www.ibiblio.org/subgenius/ts/hos.html and check out the Hours of Slack. I'm thinking this list would hafta be limited to about 10-15 albums... i'm a college student so my coffers aren't plentiful! when i say dub, i guess i'd like to see all forms of dub - form the early 70s to entirely electronic dub and beyond... i know there's a lot of dub out there - i'm mainly a scratch fan, though i finally purchased king tubby's roots of dub, and have fell in love with twilight circus since i discovered "them" 2 years ago... and of course there's smatterings of dub al over the electronic realm... so i guess if everyone makes his own master list, then a real master-master list could be edited from that...what an amazing list this could be! so my contribution, given my relatively small exposure would include: Twilight Circus Dub Soundsystem: Dub Plate Selection vol. 1 happy dubbing! -andrew # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Andrew Sturgess Subject: (orb) test Date: 27 Oct 2001 14:58:06 -0400 this is a test... i seem to not be receiving messages.. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Brett Wagner Subject: (orb) bob7 Date: 27 Oct 2001 13:51:15 -0700 (PDT) just got the mp3 subscription letter in the mail. I seem to remember though that someone posted a "recommended list" some months back. You could find it in the ultraworld list archives if you had a couple of days to spare! Anyway, I wanted to recommend 4 contemporary dub (?) CD's that I'm playing at the moment; 1) Dub Squad - Dub in Ambient, 2) Hicksville - Celtic Cross, 3) Interior Horizons, & 4) Liquid dub 7. The last 3 are available online (ie, cheap) from "www.Liquidsounddesign.com". Not your tradional dub, but wonderful spacey music. Makes me realise what crap my own mixing efforts are: "Ohh, my god are we ever in Hicksville"! (It shows up on A Brief History of Ambient I and LX's Voyage Into Paradise CD too.) The first track's an FFWD one, the second track which mixes through the FFWD one is an Eno piece from 'On Land', the name of which escapes me; the one after the Killing Joke remix is Eno's 'Ascent (an ending)' also from ABHoA1 and originally from 'Apollo', don't know the last track (the downbeat one). Hope that helps. At 08:40 PM 10-28-2001 -0600, you wrote: >Does anyone know the group and the name to the track 2 on the 2001 Orbyssey >album?
