From: Hugh James Sharpe Subject: Tong Poo Date: 10 Apr 1994 17:45:42 EDT Can anyone name the source for the sample used on the long Orb Rmix of "Tong Poo" on the YMO-Reconstructed album. This sample always gets my attention with the bit:"My grandfather lived on the southern edge of Baxter County (blurbs out)." And the country singer that closes the song is so cool. Date: 11 Apr 1994 22:50:16 -0600 (MDT) I finally received a wonderful package from Herr Bartholdsen in Sweden. Yes folks, its 90 minutes of Euro MTV and other hep-cat channels that us American hoodlums will never have the pleasure of seeing. The quality is terrific and the Panasonic deck does a great job of conversion. I believe that even PAL videos look better on American TVs than NTSC videos (as if PAL television wasn't enough). Things are nice and sharp with no ghosting or major artifacts. The sound quality varies, but hell, you can always overdub it. None of the videos are really time synced. A few that are included (from memory, I didn't take notes): Some Dead Can Dance piece with footage from Baraka, letterboxed and VERY COOL! An interview with a very shy and reserved Geir Jennsen, along with a FANTASTIC video of "The Shield". This one was my favorite on the tape. The entire "flea market" video for Lush 3. The original Perpetual Dawn, similar to the "Patterns and Textures" version, but different. Sven Vath's "L' Esperanca" and ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMEN I'VE EVER SEEN (hubba hubba). A short Richard James interview and videos for "On" and "Ageopolis" "Oin Doing"?? And a very nice spectacular Baraka like epic video (about 15 minutes) A bit of "Chime" which looks like it was done by San Francisco's Hyperdelic?!? Kraftwerk's "Telefone" TANTALIZING bits of "Mountain Goat" and "Cascade". I WANT THESE, ARRRGHGH! Cosmic Baby on the piano A few cool bits and pieces from MTV promos. Four minutes of bad Japanese drama. Something that looks like Christian and his friends shooting home videos in the dark, and a good five minutes of channel flipping at the end. PLUS MUCH MUCH MORE. This is by no means a professional tape, but it is a fun tape, and hell, what can you expect? Its free. What I'm probably going to do is a tape chain. I'll dupe it onto two tapes. A regular VHS and an SVHS. If you can handle the latter, let me know and I'll put you on that list instead. Respond to this mail with the subject "MTV Tape" with your full snail address, phone, and email. Keep in mind that you need to dupe the tape within a few days of arrival and send it to the next person. Er, the entire original song is based on the "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" riff. Not a Paterson idea at all. I think they should have left the vocals completely out of that mix. Talk about your peripheral threads! You should be able to pick them up at your local Tower. I just got _The_Grand_Delusion_ there last weekend. I'm guessing, with all of Death Of Vinyl's troubles, that the _Music_With_Sound_Volume_2_ CD might be out of print. I'm not sure how I like _TGD_ yet, it's not quite as dense or have as much of a sense of humor as _MWS2_ did. It seems more dry and cynical. But it's put together well, and there's a great track based entirely on "Also Sprach Zarathustra" (or "The _2001_ Theme Song" for those of you who know it that way :-). These are the only two Tape-beatles CDs I know of. They have many more tapes, which I keep meaning to write them about but never do. ObOrb: I'm seeing ads for "Pommes Fritz" in Goldmine already. Hardly. Seems that half of anything the Orb has been coming out with lately has been composed of Tape-Beatles samples, not to mention they begin every live show with _Beautiful State_, from _Music With Sound_... the Tape-Beatles are a MAJOR source of Orb samples... Me, I'm just mad 'cuz they used the "We don't need no education" sample on Live 93 which I had already used on one of my tracks. It's Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and it's in Dayton Ohio (about 20 minutes from me.) It's a rather large base too. They don't keep 'all' of the UFO related artifacts there. I've heard of other places in New Mexico, Utah, the Dakotas, etc etc. > Allegations include: Alien artifacts, Alien corpses, Alien Spaceships > (working and crashed) and even Live Aliens - check out the free Pic with > the LP and you'll see what I mean. I think the story about the live aliens is that when their ship crashed, they were alive, but they expired soon afterward. Kinda wrong. :) It's called "Beauty O'Locco" and is a vast reworking of the original. About the only similarities are the vocal samples used. I don't like it nearly as much as the original, but "Beauty O'Locco" is nice. I recommend both the single for "O'Locco" (esp for that killer Kuma Sutra mix) and the album _Kitchen_. Date: 27 Apr 1994 13:47:16 +0100 Taken from this weeks NME: "Orb chip in with new album" The Orb release their new album 'Pomme Fritz' through Island Inter Modo on May 31st. Described as a 'little' album - as opposed to a mini album - a culinary theme runs through it. The tracks are 'Pomme Fritz Meat and Veg', 'More Gills Less Fishcakes', 'We're Pastie To Grill You', 'Bang 'Er 'N' Chips', 'Aller Ist Schoen' and 'His Immortal Logness'. Legal problems with The Orb's former label Big Life have prevented them releasing a new album since 'UFOrb' nearly two years ago, although Alex Paterson and Thrash are rumored to have recorded a substantial body of work in that time. Legal problems of a different nature prevented Paterson from DJ-ing recently in Moscow. Paterson accompanied by NME, was playing at the Pilot Club in Moscow with Autechre and The Aphex Twin. Apparently the local militia objected to The Aphex Twin's set and removed him from the decks. When Paterson tried to take his turn DJ-ing they started pushing and jostling him. Paterson sat down on his record box and refused to budge, repeating "F--- off!" over and over, adding, "That's the only language you people understand." (Full story next week.) Meanwhile, The Orb play a show at Dublin The Point on May21st. Tickets are available at 17.50 UKP from HMV, 65 Grafton Street, Dublin 2. There is a 2.25 UKP booking fee for postage to the UK. The credit card booking hotline is 0103 531 679 5364. From this weeks Melody Maker (edited to remove anything stated in above article): "The Orb Crack A Joke" The Orb have recruited original Killing Joke drummer Big Paul Ferguson for the live gigs they're planning later this year. They've already comfirmed the first, which takes place at Dublin Point on Mat 21st.It's a late-night event going on until 2am. Alex Paterson met Big Paul when he roadied for the Joke in the Eighties. It's thought that Ferguson's decision to join The Orb was instrumental in his turning down an offer to join Youth in the recently reformed Killing Joke line-up. ...Many of the tracks on the LP [Pommes Fritz] have been co-written with Sun Electric Berliner, Thomas Fheldman. Date: 27 Apr 1994 14:19:51 BST Hi all, Just received this week's NME, and they printed details of the new Orb album: Pommes Fritz (Island Inter Modo - Release Date May 31 1994) Pommes Fritz Meat And Veg More Gills Less Fishcakes We're Pastie To Grill You Bang 'Er 'N' Chips Aller 1st Schoen His Immortal Logness Described as a 'little' album, a culinary theme runs through it. There's no mention of 'Pommes Fritz' - the single (in either the NME or Melody Maker). One Orb date (with new ex-Killing Joke drummer - can't remember his name), has been confirmed at Dublin The Point on May 21. Finally, Paterson deejayed together with Autechre and The Aphex Twin at The Pilot Club in Moscow recently, but was prevented by the local militia who objected to The Aphex Twin's set and removed him from the decks. When Paterson tried to take his turn dj-ing, they started pushing and jostling him. Paterson sat down on his record box and refused to budge, repeating "Fuck Off!" over and over, adding "That's the only language you people understand." The full story of this, will appear in next week's exciting issue of the NME (can't wait!). Anyways, it had a review of Orb Live '93, so I thought I'd post it: Orb Orb Live 93 Island Red Label Can a keyboard based ambient band play live? As the sprawling two-disc set indicates, British neo-slackers the Orb have peddled their technical hijinks to devoted fans from Tokyo to Copenhagen. Alex Patterson, former A&R rep for Brian Eno's EG REcors, and engineer wunderkind Kristian Weston (aka Thrash), are the Orb. In July of 1990, after the Orb's original duo of Patterson and Jimmy Cauty had split, Alex enlisted the aid of 18-year old Weston to remix his third single "Little Fluffy Clouds". The two joined forces as the Orbg in 1991. From their debut LP Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld, the epic 40-minute single "Blue Room" [sic] and the follow up album UFOrb (which topped he UK charts), the Orb have turned a melange of musical styles into their own signature art form. Patterson adn Weston and an ever changin roster of friends/collaborators mix television, radio, film, animal noises, and natural surroundings into complex soundscapes. The are masters of the modern collage. Dappled with hilarious samples, aural experimentation, and a smattering of laid-back beats, Orb Live 93 is a subtle and cerebral experience. "Star 6 & 7 8 9", the high point of the gorgeous Disc A, combines roars of obnoxious engines with arias of angelic voices. Disc B has its moments (notably the eerie beauty of "Spanish Castles in Space"), but does not measure up to the fist disc. Despite the inclusion of two new tracks ("Plateau" and "Valley"), Live 93 is mainly a collection of previously released material; no matter-it's an essential Orb purchase anyway. Yes they can play live. -- Stephen Reese So there you have it. This review is reprinted without the permission of Wired, so sue me (just kidding, don't I'm only trying to help %) ) Cheers, all...
