Collins" Subject: New AO Records Stuff Date: 05 Jan 1995 19:24:10 -0600 (CST) Hi everyone. I just received a postcard from AO Records (posted from Tokyo). The front has an American Typewriter font with the words "...MEDIUM FRUIT..." There is a green apple floating in space above a cratered moon. The apple has a slice out of it, revealing a watermelon interior. There are stars in the background with another small moon in the top left and a swirly black hole towards the bottom right. On the back are stamps and my address. There is a sticker attached with a "Merry Christmas & Happy New Year !" greeting. Under the greeting is; New Release 95' "Medium Fruit" - ORB, Thrash, Greg, OBI (very classic ambient) "Avemaria 2" - Slava (future classic music) "Frozen Ants" - Subsurfing (dub ambient) Suzuki K1+ 7.5cc (Suzuki Keiichi solo album) The Saxophonettes (Shimizu yasuaki) From AO Records This last part has been copied letter for letter. This postcard obviously has NOTHING to do with Designers Republic (although I don't know for 100% sure) Does anyone else know anything more about these releases? This is being posted to ORB and IDM lists. Feel free to forward this to the various other lists around. c-ya chris clarke ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: ghicken@direct.ca (Guy R Hicken) Subject: a few questions Date: 06 Jan 1995 18:38:24 -0800 Hello everyone. I've got a few questions for you. Sorry if the first one is old news but i've been off line for a while. First, last summer there was talk of Satellite serenade being reissued by Ao ambient. Did this ever happen? Second, i'm thinking of taking a trip over to the UK this summer and was wondering whether the orb had any dates set yet. They do not have to be only in the UK, anywhere in Europe would be fine. I've missed their shows the last three times I have been in London and i'll be damned if I'll do it again. Were you looking at the Orb discog? I don't think that the Orb or KLF discogs have any significant gaps in them, and I don't recall any other remixes. In fact the KLF discog doesn't even consider this one to be an Orb mix! (not to say that it isn't) However bear in mind: 1. Jimi was part of the Orb on early releases. Check the writing credits on "Adventures..." to see Paterson/Cauty/etc... 2. "Space" was also a Paterson/Cauty collaboration, and was supposedly going to be released as an Orb LP on the KLF label, but wranglings between the KLF and WAU labels resulted in it being credited to Jimi alone. 3. Alex compiled the "What Time is Love Story" LP of WTIL? cover versions. It has two of the coldcut mixes I was asking about eariler this year. But I think the true winners on this disk are the Cumulonimbus mix and Outlands (fountain of elisha mix). Not really spacy like I like it, but kinda house/moog like, or, dare I say it: easy-listining style (I love it, ha ha). The coldcut mixes are very chunky- I'm not sure of my stand on them, they seem kinda in-between, not house/rave and not ambient (I didn't think it was much like dub either, but I'm kinda picky). The intro to Inner Master Mix is most excelent- totaly clear and startling, also the keyboard voice sample is lots of fun. The reamaining two "dance mixes" seemed pretty "normal" for da orb. A great buy for $5.00. On an unrelated note, can anyone e-mail me with info on Lucia Pamela? The US Little Fluffy Clouds CD5 has on its cover, in the lower right hand corner, the marking "12" cd". It's a play on the fact that many people (including myself) still call remix singles "12 inches" despite the fact that they're on a 5" CD. Here's an excerpt: - -- "The Orb is, in essence, a collaboration of people I would have liked to work with on an A&R level anyway. It's a completely different way of working in a band structure and how it works, and that's the Orb." One person who may or may not like the way it works is former Orb collaborator Kris Weston, also known as Thrash. "Thrash, Crash," says Paterson with a devious smile. "But he likes to be known as Kris Weston, and he gets a bit uppity if you call him Trash." A 22-year-old studio whiz who joined Paterson during the recording of _Adventures_, Weston soon became a permanent fixture in the band. Now, however, Paterson says Weston is no longer a member of the Orb, although he was a full partner on _Orbus Terranum_, and the two plan to continue working together on other projects. "It's not a problem, it's a progression," he says. "Basically, he found that his control is not total with me being in charge of the Orb. He had to answer to me and I think he wants to answer to himself. So let him work on his own projects and let him see how life really is. That's what you call experience." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Burkhard Jaerisch Subject: new boots Date: 17 Jan 1995 16:33:02 MEZ hi, i went to a record convention on saturday and they had some orb boots i didn't have yet, Orb, Icons of The Orb and two new ones that i will describe below. I discovered that one of them (Europe 92) is the same as Close Encounters of the Ultraworld which i already have, so if anyone is interested in either Close Encounters... or Europe 92, i will gladly sell it for the price i bought it for (20$ plus postage). contact me at bj3@physik.uni-stuttgart.de so here's the additions to the discography: *The Orb - europe 1992 CD LIVE STORM lscd 51548 (1994) tracks: - -departure (4.17) - -spanish castles in space (13.18) - -little fluffy clouds (8.03) - -blue room (11.25) - -towers of dub (8.51) - -star 6 & 7 8 9 (4.11) - -earth (gaia) (14.00) - -close encounters (10.48) Same tracks & same recording as Close Encounters of the Ultraworld, except for slightly different track timing. I don't know if Mudslickers is the correct title, but I haven't heard this anywhere else yet. The other tracks are marked "from radio FM England 1994", don't know where these were recorded; sound has more "live feel", some audience is audible, some feedback etc., still the sound quality is very good. i can really recommend the dipping... cd, get it if you can!! flex ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Doug Hill" Subject: Orb promo Date: 17 Jan 1995 10:30:09 -0800 I have an Orb promo 12" from the Pomme Fritz album for sale. How's this for _sad_: I haven't listened to them for a long while, but as i recall: BLR270T is shorter than MWS017T. The church bells at the end of one side are cut, I imagine to qualify it as a single or whatever. Jimmy Cauty's washing machine makes a guest appearance in MWS017T. There is a click (although not very audible) as the track fades. This is because at Trancentral (a London bedsit i think) most of the electronics were fed into one plug point. When JC's washing machine turned off automatically, the blip was recorded on the master. The answer to (why is six scared of seven?) is scratched on the inside of MWS017T. It is, as lazlo points out, "because 7 8 9". I heard once that the vocals to Minny Ripperton's "Loving You" are the original ones on MWS017T and were re-recorded for BLR270T. They sounded the same to me though, so i don't believe this. That's all I remember. Peace and Light, Brad Sarno Sorry Brad-- I must disagree with your take on the quality of material on the Axiom Ambient release. (Please bear in mind, I have been absolutely blown away by much of Laswell's stuff released over the past five or six years-- his ambient dub releases on the Subharmonic label pretty much changed the way I listen to music nowadays...) Much of what turns me off about many artists who find their musical calling involves their regurgitating "fantasia" suites or stylistic medleys of familiar and comfortable materials. This generally is not a problem with Laswell, who has been astonishingly experimentative as of late... BUT: Axiom Ambient is, IMO, a pointless, medley-like mish-mash of neat ideas that he has already accomplished more cohesively on the source recordings. In other words, if you want the Master Musicians of Jajouka, Sonny Sharrock, Sola, Nicky Skopelitis, Praxis, etc--buy em. The original recordings say it better than just about anything on the expensive double CD. Date: 20 Jan 1995 14:31:59 -0800 Hi, folks, Here's a copy of a message I just got from a friend on another list. Make of it what you will. Slothar/Gurney/Steve - ------- Forwarded Message Follows ------- Two years ago the FCC tried and (with your help and letters of protest) failed to institute regulations that would impose additional costs on modem users for data communications. Now, they are at it again. A new regulation that the FCC is quietly working on will directly affect you as the user of a computer and modem. The FCC proposes that users of modems should pay extra charges for use of the public telephone network which carry their data. In addition, computer network services such as CompuServ, Tymnet, & Telenet would also be charged as much as $6.00 per hour per user for use of the public telephone network. These charges would very likely be passed on to the subscribers. The money is to be collected and given to the telephone company in an effort to raise funds lost to deregulation. Jim Eason of KGO newstalk radio (San Francisco, CA) commented on the proposal during his afternoon radio program during which, he said he learned of the new regulation in an article in the New York Times. Jim took the time to gather addresses which are given below. Here's what you should do (NOW!): 1-Pass this information on. Capture the information which contains the text you are reading now. Find other BBS's that are not carrying this information. Upload the ASCII text into public message on the BBS, and also upload the file itself so others can easily get a copy to pass along. 2-Print out three copies of the letter which follows (or write yours down) and send a signed copy to each of the following: Chairman of the FCC 1919 M Street N.W. Washington, D.C. 20554 Chairman, Senate Communication Subcommittee SH-227 Hart Building Washington, D.C. 20510 Chairman, House Telecommunication Subcommittee B-331 Rayburn Building Washington, D.C. 20510 Here's the suggested text of the letter to send: Dear Sir: Please allow me to express my displeasure with the FCC proposal which would authorize a surcharge for the use of modems on the telephone network. This regulation is nothing less than an attempt to restrict the free exchange of information among the growing number of computer users. Calls placed using modems require no special telephone equipment, and users of modems pay the phone company for use of the network in the form of a monthly bill. In short, a modem call is the same as a voice call and therefore should not be subject to any additional regulation. Sincerely, *************** It is important that you act now. The bureaucrats already have it in their heads that modem users should subsidize the phone company and are now listening to public comment. Please stand up and make it clear that we will not stand for any government restriction on the free exchange of information. Please deal with this in a TIMELY manner. Andrew. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Pete Hartman Subject: Trance Remixes.... Date: 21 Jan 1995 17:30:28 -0600 I note that Lazlo's discography only has the Wish You Were Here trance remixes; someone recently auctioned off a copy of Dark Side of the Moon Trance Remixes, and after losing out on that, someone else I know said he knew a record dealer who claimed to have not only DSotM but _The Wall_ Trance remixes! I've got a copy of WYWH on order elsewhere and orders for this guy to get me a copy of the other two if possible. Does anyone have any further info about these? Sound Quality...packaging...anything? I recently got a copy of Morphology and was duly impressed. Now if we can just get someone to collect the REALLY RARE stuff instead of putting out bootlegs which I already have half the tracks from... :-) I've gone through and made a first pass at notating the discography with the stuff I have. It kind of inspired me to try and find a minimal-fit for the tracks I don't have from the many possible sources. For example, various Huge Evergrowing Remixes are collected on just about every one of the boots; I don't know of any that have the really hard to find versions though (though I confess to not having read the discography THAT closely). In any case, if anyone wants to help find a minimal fit discography for getting all the tracks, let me know directly. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Burkhard Jaerisch Subject: orb boots Date: 22 Jan 1995 2:07:30 MEZ i went to a record convention today again... huge ever growing amount of orb bootlegs... anyway, i finally saw that pulsating sound of orb bootleg, looked quite nice, but it seemed to have mostly live tracks, it had that diva intro and then the standard stuff of the 91 tour (?), little fluffy clouds, earth etc. plus two studio tracks: the huge ever growing... ambient mix (with a track timing of 16 minutes !!?) and the orbital dance mix. i didn't pick it up cuz that seemed too familiar. i picked up another copy of the trance remixes of pink floyd's wish you were here album, with the little fluffly clouds remix etc. that are supposed to be done by alex (i don't believe that, though). so if anybody out there wants it it's available for 17$ plus postage (what i paid for), also i still have the europe 92 bootleg for 18$. let me know. that's all for today.. oh yes, someone asked for a review of the falconer cd, well, it's not bad, it has some cool ambient "dreamscapes" that are pretty good, but there are also some tracks that are kind of cheap-sounding. still worth getting for orb fans, though. the 12"/cd5 of that album sucks, though. i forgot, there's another new boot, both klf's chill out lp and space lp on one cd, that's a great bargain, also the sound is very good (i didn't play it all yet, though). german pressing on "wix trax" records. cheers flex ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Peter W. I waited for the domestic US release of Fire+Water, but .do I need to seek out a third disk, or was this source truly unreliable? This almost certainly has to do with a reply card that came inside the UK release that asked whether people liked Fire, Water, or Steam best. There is no Steam album though. I waited for the domestic US release of Fire+Water, but > do I need to seek out a third disk, or was this source truly unreliable? The mail-in card included with the UK Fire and Water discs included a little questionnaire that read something like: "Which do you prefer, dance beats (Fire), trippy ambient (Water) or in between (Steam)?" Some folks read this to mean there actually *was* a "Steam" album. There are 2 discs, no more. Enclosed on the inlay card of the UK CDs is a questionnaire/reply service card. In the Questionnaire they ask which you preferred: Fire (beats...), Water (ambient) or Steam (a combination of the two). That is the origin of the "third disc" confusion. Yeah, I saw those and that's why I'm disappointed with the US artwork. =) It's a computer generated "fan" shape of mini-flames (kind of) in front of a blue "water" effect. Pretty nondescript. Everyone in the US should be able to see firsthand any time now anyhow. What matters to me is the actual music on the CDs, which I am enjoying. - - Bobby Tribble
