Yep, got it yesterday. It's pretty good, but it helps that I have pitch control on my CD player (+3% is about right). I'm VERY dissapointed in the DJ Lewis track. I expected it to rocket, but it just kind of lays there like...(searching for something witty)...roadkill? It's not that bad, but it should have been slapped on the Water CD. > The pricing is only a dollar or two more than a U.S. domestic single CD. > (For example, it is $13.29 at deep discount). Dop! I must say I like the Water disc best. It has enough beats to satisfy me, and it seems more interesting musically, but they are both pretty good. "There are a lot of things that are more important than music. It's just an escape, anyway. That's what I'm using the Orb as - an escape." "It's just a certain je ne sais quoi. You're slightly high and you're listening to the Orb and you have a little giggle..." and a bit on the early days of Paterson: From an early age, Alex wanted to be an artist. "I knew I could draw," he says. "When I was nine or ten years old, I used to win stupid art competitions. They said, 'He's got a flair.'" At 16, he attended art school, but after a year and a half of not receiving a grant and being forced to work at night, he quit. "Now I don't do any of that," he says. "I rebelled against it - what I learned in art school - again being told what was good and what wasn't. I said,'Fuck you, I'm not going to do any of this. I'm going to be a roadie.'" What followed was a typical English rock'n'roll scenario with a punk- rock flair - squatting with a band, playing a couple of gigs, putting out a record, the record getting picked up by John Peel, gigs selling out. The band he was involved with was Killing Joke, a post-punk or proto-industrial outfit, depending on your point of view, whose members included Youth and Jaz Coleman. Paterson was their drum tech and roadie. It was with Killing Joke that Paterson made his performance debut. "We used to do cover versions of Sex Pistols numbers as an encore, because they never used to have enough material of their own," he recalls. "'No Fun.' 'Bodies.' and 'God Saves the Queen.' For the first year of the Joke's existence, I would go on and do some vocals for the encore. We even did a punk version of Grandmaster Flash."... - ---interview by David J. JAMIL ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Steve Shah Subject: Petition against censorship Date: 23 Feb 1995 13:28:42 -0800 (PST) Greetings Peoples, I just got this and can't verify how "bad" it is, but following up on it never hurts. Esp. when they are threatening our freedom of speech. (This is Congress on censoring the Internet) Please forward it on to others on the net. - -Steveoid Forwarded message: Hello everyone... I know it been a while since I've been seen on the net, but I've been a little bit busy. However, a matter has come to my attention that is of the utmost importance to all of us online. Simply put, a couple of senators have proposed a particularly heinous piece of legislation titled the "Communications Decency Act of 1995" (Senate Bill S. 314). Basically, the bill would subject all forms of electronic communication -- from public Internet postings to your most private email -- to government censorship. The effects of the bill onto the online industry would be devastating -- most colleges and private companies (AOL, Compuserve, etc.) would probably have to shut down or greatly restrict access, since they would be held criminally liable for the postings and email of private users. Obviously, this bill is designed to win votes for these senators among those who are fearful of the internet and aren't big fans of freedom of speech -- ie., those who are always trying to censor "pornography" and dirty books and such. Given the political climate in this country, this bill might just pass unless the computer community demonstrates its strength as a committed political force to be reckoned with. This, my friends, is why I have filled your mailbox with this very long message. A petition, to be sent to Congress, the President, and the media, has begun spreading through the Internet. It's easy to participate and be heard -- to sign it, you simply follow the instructions below -- which boil down to sending a quick email message to a certain address. That's all it takes to let your voice be heard. (You know, if the Internet makes democracy this accessible to the average citizen, is it any wonder Congress wants to censor it?) Finally, PLEASE forward this message to all your friends online. The more people sign the petition, the more the government will get the message to back off the online community. We've been doing fine without censorship until now -- let's show them we don't plan on allowing them to start now. If you value your freedoms -- from your right to publicly post a message on a worldwide forum to your right to receive private email without the government censoring it -- you need to take action NOW. It'll take fifteen minutes at the most, a small sacrifice considering the issues at hand. Remember, the age of fighting for liberty with muskets and shells is most likely over; the time has come where the keyboard and the phone line will prove mightier than the sword -- or the Senate, in this case. Yours in liberty, -don Here's what you have to do to sign the petition: send an e-mail message to: S314-petition@netcom.com the message (NOT the subject heading) should read as follows: SIGNED eg. SIGNED lsewell@leland.Stanford.EDU Laura Sewell YES If you are interested in signing the petition, I would highly suggest investigating the details of the situation. The new Orb session has just been broadcast, and just two tracks at that. Mong T'Dor (my spelling is probably wrong) starts by sounding all long and lazy Pink Floyd guitar and a few woaah-woahh electronic sounds as on LFC, before moving onto more beeps, sitars and some dubby snare drums. Makes me think of a summer's night - does that help? The other was Valley which you've probably already heard on Live 93, at Glastonbury or on the Woodstock 94 boot, the latter which it is closest to, but with a few more drum lines. Other Orb news mentioned is that the Orbus Terravum will be released on March 20; they will be doing an all-nighter at the Forum in London on April 08 with Bandula, DJs Lewis and Andy Weatherall and special guests. Also (and I've forget to tell you before) they will be playing at Sound City 95 in Bristol (that's a Radio 1 comes-to-town week for non-UK peeps) which will be broadcast live on April 18. oo -\/- Vince. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: tvigil@nyx.cs.du.edu (Tony Vigil) Subject: Wish You Were Here Date: 25 Feb 1995 10:21:42 MST I got cancelled from the list for a while there. I mean not albums or anything, just continously mixed rave tape type things, like you might find in Camden market (which I haven't). I still rate him as pretty much the best techno/ambient DJ I've heard (out of a fair few top DJ's), but you can't seem to find his stuff anywhere. Any pointers would be very helpful. Chords ring out from a rich sounding piano, with a dark gurgling sound present behind it. The piano's sound becomes bathed in reverb, and some flanged drums pick up the slack. Sound good? Not quite. The problem with Orbvs Terranvm isn't that it's ambitious, or because the melodies behind the songs are sub-par... it's because the Orb are showing their limits as musicians. One out of every four chords at the beginning of Oxbow lakes rings false: as if Dr. Alex's fingers had slipped briefly from the proper keys, creating a sour tone to the music. Reading this description, one might respond that it's probably an experiment in discordancy. But it certainly doesn't sound that way on the CD, and it makes you cringe every time you hear it. Ultimately, Orbvs Terranvs is a lot better than Pommes Fritz -- but the Orb still can't resist going into long stretches of boring, knob-twiddling effects. All of the sparkling, floating beauty of FFWD is missing, as is the crunching, bass-driven dub of the first two albums. Ultimately, I think this can be traced to the lack of two key collaborators: Youth, whose production skills carried many a fine Orb track, and Steve Hillage. Given the consistent quality of System 7 releases, I'd venture to say that a lot of what made tracks such as Blue Room and Back Side of the Moon so great was Hillage's work, both with synth and guitar. He's sorely missed on this one. Regardless, it's good to have a new Orb album. After two listens, it's growing on me -- but it's not grabbing me with the kind of catchy power that the first two albums (and countless remixes) have had on me. It's a decent try at something new, but it never takes off. Hesistantly recommended, at domestic prices. esch@fische.com (Eschatfische.) ---------------------------- http://execpc.com/~esch/home.html "That's what's pathetic about the way my mind works.
