I think it's excellent! Maybe all the neighsayers lowered my expectations for this one, but I think it's better than FFWD (which took me a while to get used to). Anybody know if the difference in time listings for different versions is from differences in mastering (ie. mixing tracks together to get them to fit on cd). Nice album a cross between Ultraworld and Pomme Fritz. I didn't buy it though, because the wanted $50 AUS for the bloody thing. It was the limited edition map pack, which looks real nice, but isn't very practical, ie, would rip and not protect the cd very well. Past news blurbs in the magazine have often turned out to be premature or just wrong, so I'd be willing to bet that the tour will actually begin later than June or July.... There is also a review of _Orbvs Terrarvm_ in the magazine that is quite favorable, and a photo of Alex and Kris that is rather amusing: Alex sports some expertly-applied face makeup that makes him look like a disfigured ogre or something, and Kris's body is visually morphed into ridiculous contortions so that his arms and legs wrap impossibly around his torso as fingers and toes tweak knobs on a large mixing desk in front of the duo.... Finally, some words of my own on the new Orb & System 7 ("777" here in the U.S.) albums, since they're only recently out here. I'd encourage anyone who may have been put off by less-than-stellar reviews of the new music to hear the stuff for themselves. _Orbvs Terrarvm_ really is spectacular, and like nothing else out there. The brilliant production of _Pomme Fritz_ and _FFWD_ is back, but the decidedly more percussive sound of the new work gives is a more "accessible" feel. The production on System 7's _Fire + Water_ isn't as dynamic as on the new Orb, but then *nobody* really has mixes comparable to Kris' and Alex's. What Hillage and the other people involved in the new System 7 craft with _Fire + Water_ is subtly intricate trance that alternately grooves and washes around Steve's trademark gliss guitar work. I suspect hearing it in a Church didn't help matters. I've been at concerts too where the pain threshold was held continuously for 9 hours. This time around I brought earplugs and I even issued them out to my more meek girlfriend and friends. But not a single one of us used them. You see I think you missed the point about Orb Live (at least the way I've always seen it). The loud music, the nauseating lights and the crazy wierd noises and samples are probably intended to saturate the audience. A sort of sensory overload, a psychedelic trip if you like. If you'll excuse the corny expression ...perhaps if you had "given yourself up to it" you might have enjoyed it as a sort of escapist journey. It gives me a rush to be surrounded by such wierdness so far from normality and then have the volume pumped up on a classic ambient melody. > umm interesting .. i suspect that the doctor is desperate to pick up the > more dance orientated crowd as only a couple of week ago on TV he was > insisting that live its far more beat driven .. afterall he has to fill > rather large venues this time ... After a long song with so much energy (=noise?) "flowing" around you, a deep bassline puts the polish on it all. Its just one more way of tranceing (numbing?) yourself out of reality...(is all this making sense?) > all i can say is that i agree with your `resentment' for the voice samples > .. i too find that they can often get in the way of the best parts, but > i caught the live act a couple of years ago and it was gorgeous to the > ears .. no pain just warmth and pure beauty .. maybe k.weston/thrash was > more inspring than has been credited for ?? As a matter of fact the samples are what do it for me. This was a major reason why I enjoyed this latest tour so much more. There were fewer long swooshy silences and more interesting and _engaging_ moments. > ...perhaps I > was the only one "to see the Emperor's nakedness" (everyone else > seemed in awe !).... Well I don't pretend to speak for any other Orb fan, but I would have been one of those people in awe. I have seen the occasional person (perhaps middle aged, looking awkward and staring through the cacophany trying to understand it all?) and you can tell they're just not getting it. Just when you thought it was safe to sit down and skin up another colossal wave of bass would send you skanking manically across the dance-floor.Everyone there seemed to be "into it" from the tripped-out love bunnies at the front,to the foot-tappers at the back who could barely be seen through a haze of skunk smoke.Even though illicit substances and the orb seem to go together like Ren and Stimpy this was a concert which provided it's own high, still that's just what I think.... love'n hugs Gabe "the music was fantastic....." I thought it was interesting so here it is: ORB GOOD BLOKES _______________ "Happy Happy Joy Joy." The Orb attract a kind of person. Who wants to - you know - sort of bounce, gasp and grin when they go out. Alright, so people take drugs at Orb gigs. Safe and happy in the ever-loving warmth and cosmic vibes of old father Patterson, they get leathered. And then they bounce up and down. Certainly from what I could tell of the crowd at the Liverpool leg of March's tour, I was one of the few in full control of my mind. People all around me were bouncing, gasping at the light show and grinning from ear to ear. Everybody loves The Orb - or rather everybody feels safe and comfy with The Orb. Perhaps this is the problem. "Records, CDs, cassettes" says drummer and percussionist Nick Burton, who also designs The Orbs record sleeves, "what's the odd one out?" "Errr...cassettes?" I mumble. "why", he asks me. "Because they're not round?" I reply hopefully. "Exactly!" he says triumphantly, leaning back in his chair, "And what else is round?" "Footballs?" I query. "No, The Orb is round!" he says as if its the most obvious thing in the world, "and thats why the Orb's chosen music formats are round!" The Orb sem to have this meandering logic about everything that you ask them about. Nothing is worth getting too worked up about. But I try anyway... "Why do you think your chosen formats are so expensive in Britain?" Bass player Simon Phillips takes this on: "Over in America they're dirt cheap, but then look at the shit music they've got over there." He sees the smile on my face, "no seriously that's why its shit, they won't put money into bands like us because we're not going to make them a load of money. We can sell maybe 40, 50, 60 thousand records at a decent price and make a living. Thats the truth. You look at America, you pay less for your c.d., but it's shit" He grins and adds, "and you're likely to get shot as well!" There's certainly no fame trip going on here. But then The Orb have been going on for nearly six years now. In that time head surgeon Alex has only given a handful of interviews. "How many interviews do you want to give?" says Nick, "this one's pretty good" interupts Simon "but normally they're so boring you wouldn't believe. It's like 'errr...did you write Fluffy Clouds, and what about the KLF blah, blah, blah'. It drives you mad. That's why we come along and talk about Noel Edmonds and rubbish like that." Nick agrees, "They're all retro-headed wankers. They're just historians who want to know about the past, but we want to talk about the future." Its easy to forget you're interviewing major pop-stars, talking to Nick and Simon. In fact they just chat about anything. Just good blokes who happen to play in a band. They don't care much if they're not on The Word this month. They're not on some ego-trip to Hollywood. They're here for the duration. If you ever see them in the street stop and have a chat. Just don't ask them if they wrote Fluffy Clouds! _________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Kell Dockham Subject: ORB CDs/KLF CDs Date: 25 Apr 1995 13:00:04 -0700 (PDT) The following CDs i have for AUCTION: the JAMs - "1987: What the Fuck Is Going On?)" I'm sorry to say this, but they've been such flakes when it comes to concerts in the U.S. After last summer's cancellation, someone posted a note saying that they had cancelled the previous two times they were scehduled to play Chicago. ...anyway sorry to ramble on. But should I get my hopes up again only to have them dashed away? I know the dates have just been anounceed and all, but what do you all think will happen? ||====|| //\\ ||\\ || Ran Mano || || // \\ || \\ || 325 Baxter Road ||===\\ // \\ || \\ || Ballwin MO, 63011-3876 || \\ //======\\ || \\ || ramano@artsci.wustl.edu || \\ // \\ || \\|| http://www.artsci.wustl.edu/~ramano/ On Sat, 29 Apr 1995, Kathleen Vrshek wrote: > Guess what me found today?
