I liked this one..... not dancy or electronic or anything, but I would call it a remix.... the strings were playing music that appeared in Oxbow. Anyway this was a nice relaxing one... > anyway, i guess the other 12" will be more interesting > with the gerald remix etc... I didn't like the gerald remix. I could barely hear any of Oxbow in it (and didn't really like the track on its own either). This one seemed more like a song than a remix. Not even a bit of Oxbow at the end like the Carl Craig mix had.... Which leaves only one more mix. The Sabres of Paradise mix. This mix, however, I did like. Some good stuff mixed in with recognisable Oxbow elements. All in all I didn't think the single was too impressive however..... What I want to know is: what is the point of some of these remixes? They elements of the songs they use (if any at all) are so obscure that none of them are recognisable, and can barely be called Oxbow remixes. To me, the point of a remix is to mix elements of a song in a new way that are at least a little recognisable to someone who's heard the original song. Some of these obscure mixes lose the point completely, IMO Chris _ \ __| | | __| | _) | | / _ ( | _| _| -_) _| \ _` | | ( \ | | _` | | ) \ / ___|\__\___|_| _| _\__,_|_| \___|_| _|_|_\__,_| \ / __ __| Chris Azure galliard@asiaonline.net |__ __ | "I've not lived forever yet" - Chris Azure | _| "I just want to live until I die" - Jah Wobble, Forever |_ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Mike Battaglia Subject: Re: new orb single (Oxbow Lakes) Date: 23 May 1995 14:05:15 -0700 (PDT) why does a 'remix' *have* to contain bits (and recognizable bits at that) of the original for you to enjoy it? what's wrong with simply enjoying the piece for what it's worth? I found the same keyboard riff from the original 'oxbow' which was used in the three 'dancey' mixes to be tedious, and wondered why it was thrown in obligingly - all three tracks stand up *well* on their own, especially the Craig mix... let's take a look at the 'remix', shall we? mid-late eighties, 'remixes' are done to songs to club-ify them, giving them bigger beats, 'extended versions', mainly for play in clubs - a marketing ploy. House music comes around and remixes begin to get big - bigger names mixing bigger songs into huge dance masterpieces, most of the time adding new music into the original....then around the early nineties (and probably/possibly earlier) some people were taking songs and doing completely different 'remixes', basically making their own track and tacking another name on it (see Aphex Twin)...Today this is often the norm... my point is - you bought an Orb single and instead of just an Orb single you got tracks by Carl Craig, the Sabres of Paradise, A Guy Called Gerald, and Instrumental, a *string ensemble*! You should be happy with the value you recieved for your money! > They elements of the songs they use (if any at all) are so obscure that > none of them are recognisable, and can barely be called Oxbow remixes. > To me, the point of a remix is to mix elements of a song in a new way > that are at least a little recognisable to someone who's heard the > original song. Some of these obscure mixes lose the point completely, IMO 'remixes', shmemixes. why should artists bother sticking to those rules? i think your definition of 'remix' is an old one. don't limit! Renew your remix paradigm (hee!) and consider the 'point' of remixes. *my* definition of 'remix' is to give another artist a chance to interpret particular track in their own way. Aphex twin is often asked to do mixes for artists he considers to be complete crap, and ends up just doing his own thing. is this making sense? :) my point is: there should be no rules for remixing. I LOVE getting a completely new track (how about the Autechre remix of St Etienne's 'Like a Motorway', which reduced singer Sarah Cracknell's voice to a mere electronic stutter)...dont look a gift horse in the mouth, and all that crap...;) mikebee ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: lazlo@rt66.com (Lazlo Nibble) Subject: Re: new orb single (Oxbow Lakes) Date: 23 May 1995 16:16:17 -0600 (MDT) > my point is - you bought an Orb single and instead of just an Orb > single you got tracks by Carl Craig, the Sabres of Paradise, A Guy > Called Gerald, and Instrumental, a *string ensemble*! I'm quite fond of KLF's Pet Shop Boys mixes, but that's only because I like KLF and therefore don't mind the fact that the mixes bear little if any resemblance to the original tracks. I certainly don't blame the average PSB fan if they dislike them. The UFO Mix of "It Must Be Obvious" only has a few seconds of the original faded in and out; the rest of the mix sounds like -- and probably is -- an outtake from the Space album . . . hardly what you expect from a PSB single. > my point is: there should be no rules for remixing. If I buy a single, I'd like to get at least *one* remix that is recognizably based on the original song. That's my "rule". If I want an Aphex Twin album, the shop down the street has plenty of them. As for this comment by the original writer, the Orb has done this to other people's music so many times it's not funny. Yet all the Orb fans I know LOVE it when they do that. I think it's only fair that the shoe goes on the other foot. I haven't heard the single myself to judge whether I like it or not, but I figure it's probably likely to bear as much resemblance to the Orb's originals as the Depeche Mode and Erasure songs the Orb has remixed in the bast resemble *their* originals. I.E. not at all. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: david306@clubhouse.email.net Subject: Remix Date: 23 May 1995 19:35:49 CDT It seems to me that re-mixing grew in reverse out of the limited air time that used to be given to songs. There was the "long version" of songs like Light My Fire or even Crimson and Clover and then the one that was two minutes or less that could be played on the radio. Groups like the Rolling Stones, with Satisfaction, helped chip away at that (and half of the length of Satisfaction is Mick singing "No, no, no") - by the time Hey Jude came around, album rock was just being born and "short" versions of songs were not in as much demand. In another decade or so, after the death of disco, the BEAT demanded some release!!! This is connected to The Orb somehow; I would like to see the show in Dallas. In your opinion, that is. I wasn't so thrilled with two of them.... I just don't see the point in calling them remixes of Oxbow Lakes if they're gonna be so far removed. Why not just release them as seperate songs on seperate albums/singles and let everyone take them on their own? (didn't Orbital do that with one of their songs on the brown album?) I've got nothing against people remixing songs as much as they want, coming up with their own new sounds. But there's a point where it ceases to be a remix (IMO) and becomes its own song. While those songs might often be good and worth listening to, they're not why I bought the Oxbow Lakes single. Drop me a line if you are. ian livingston ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: abtech@gate.net Subject: orb tampa comments Date: 29 May 1995 16:04:23 -0400 (EDT) I was at the orb show in Tampa at the Masquerade on the 27th. I have a really bad memory & was wondering if any of you could write down your comments on the show, your feelings, etc, & all the songs you remember hearing. Once I get them I'm going to put them together & make a file on the whole experience for myself (right now all I can pretty much remember is that it was one very NIIIICE time). If anyone can pick up an extra tshirt for me at one of the shows I'll pay for it & shipping & whatever extra. I also took a few pictures, during the concert, don't know how they came out yet, but I'll be wlling to send people some for like $1 or whatever it'd cost. I would have thought this was obvious to anyone who listened to it. I'd managed to figure this out by listening to it and I don't speak a word of Russian. Yuri Gagarin and wostok (or Vostok as it was called in the west) sound exactly the same when said by someone speaking Russian. I suppose it might take a Russian speaker to figure out that 1961 was mentioned by anyone could have done that themselves by looking in a history book. Sorry for the rant. Bit of a shitty day. She didn't get very far (as she was kinda out of practice, but when she returns from studying in Moscow I'll have her listen to it again). Though she was a little more specifice than the article some where in the Orb page archivies (the unoffical one that is) something about studying on a sea ship, I just can't remeber the specifics. While the voice fits the music very well- she had a hard time figuring out its meaning based on the context. Also, I just got the For All Mankind CD-ROM from Voyager and if you want to know what all the astronaut sampes are really saying (When I "sang" along the closest I could come up with didn't make any sense- "transfer injection burn" is really "transLUNAR injection burn"- maybe I'm just a dope though ;-) ). A beautiful film by Al Reinhart, the CD has the transcrips and the Brian Eno sound track is to die for (that floating in space kinda music that turned me on to the Orb- i.e. Super Nova at the End of the Universe). While Adventures and UFOrb are very stellar, I felt like Pommies Fritz and Orbvs were very terrsteral (also very evident on the song titles) maybe thats why I find them more "difficult" though I really like Orbvs. I haven't listened to the YMO style stuff in a long time- its growing on me the more I listen to them, weird in a different way. Just some thoughts. (p.s. why did I have to plan my trip to Mexico when the Orb are playing next door in AZ and TX, ugh!) __________________ G- Colanut@triton.unm.edu http://www.unm.edu/~colanut/alpha.html 68 inches above sea-level, 93 million miles above these devils - Digable Planets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Steve Shah Subject: Re: U.F.Orb (and other sample insights) Date: 30 May 1995 09:41:49 -0700 (PDT) I had my mom try and decode the Hindi samples in Spanish Castles in Space (Aubrey Mixes) but the fiddling they did with the sample made it hard for her to understand.
