In the "alternative" part of the catalog they have Aphex Twin's "I Care Because You Do" and the Orb's "Orbus Terrarum" right next too each other. YES - for sale through BMG. As far as I'm concerned, Matt's question may have been a little naive, but it was a perfectly reasonable for this list, especially given his explanation of what sparked it. Not everyone know that Alex spins as "DJ LX" from time to time, and it's hardly obvious that "LX" is Alex Paterson when Alex is credited under his real name elsewhere on the same record. If you're out to impress people with how much Orb trivia you're hauling around in your melon, you'll get better results by actually *answering* people's questions than you will by berating them for how stupid you think they are for asking them. The coldness of 'Pomme Fritz' and 'Orbus Terrarum' was making me think they were no good anymore. Saturday, I just saw them in a live performance in a small club and boy... it was great. No more coldness there, just their best dub collage with heavy bass pumping the whole club... I'm reconverted. Therefore, I wanted to ask to you if anyone had an advice on some EP that might contain ORB work in the vein of "solid bass line soundtrack" not available on the regular albums ( like _THAT_ fanstastic "Blue Room" EP ). Has anyone heard anything about either an offical live recording from the latest Orb tour, or a ROIO recording(s)? I would love to have this tour on CD, and would enjoy it so much more than Live'93! The Orb did have a killer show this time around. I saw Alex and company perform here in New York City, and had just arrived in Paris the day they performed just outside the city in August. (damn damn only heard about it a few days after.) Is there anyway we can organize and petition Island to release someting (don't remember if they were recording in NYC or not)? I have already sent one or two e-mails to the e-mail address on the promo Orb web page (musiclink@hyperlink.com with the subject line of orb reply) but doubt that is going anyplace real. Any suggestions? Thanks! (and sorry for the low amount of new orb content) /Michael (OnNow: Patterns and Textures! the best live performance I have, only it's just a tape copy.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Hauben Teachers College Editor of Amateur Computerist Newsletter by day hauben@cs.columbia.edu by night Netizen's Cyberstop ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Random Access Subject: Re: PBS Date: 29 Sep 1995 06:40:55 -0500 (EST) <# Replies to this message will go to: <# Random Access <# To respond to the list, please mail your message to orb@xmission.com. <# For help unsubscribing, say "HELP" in a message to majordomo@xmission.com. I suspect that they might show it again for a fundraising efforts. Granted, the history of Rock & Roll does not have the fiscal potential of Playing Yanni 12 times in a row (followed by a John Tesh tailer). But the show was done well enough to warrent re-broadcasting. I'm not sure when PBS will do this again - and if they ever show the last eposide again I'll become a member. PBS has a long history of broadcasting popular music shows during funding drives, so stay tuned. For those who missed the series, the last few eposides were just amazing. The last show, "The Perfect Beat" covered an amazing amount of ground from Kraftwerk to Grandmaster Flash, New Order, De la Soul :), NWA, Detriot House, Public Enemy, and finally ending with the Orb. Unfortunetly, they threw in some Madonna videos in the middle for no apparent reason. Did anyone else find it *very* strange that a 10-hour show devoted to rock & roll did not end with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Grunge, or whatever - but with the Orb? I never even considered the Orb to be remotely "Rock & Roll." I guess the point was that Rock & Roll was evolving away from instruments-only, towards a looser musical definition. I thought it took a lot of vision and guts, not only to include the orb but also to cover rap and funk as well as this show did. Whoever did it, nice job! My dad, who has always considered my taste in music to be very strange was also floored by this. Also, I have told him for years that Rap grow out of, in part, for Kraftwerk. He never believed me until last night :-) Last things - this was the first time I had ever heard LX speak. I was suprised by how deep and throaty it was. And where the hell can I get one of those chairs? > All the shows I saw were top-notch...if anyone on the list knows anyone > who worked on it, give 'em a slap on the back for me. Madonna was as much a part of the club scene of the early '80s as New Order or Depeche Mode were, and "Vogue" *was* one of the tracks that broke house music in the mainstream (gotta give the folks watching the show something familiar to hold on to or you lose them). > Did anyone else find it *very* strange that a 10-hour show devoted to > rock & roll did not end with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Grunge, or whatever - > but with the Orb? I certainly wouldn't have bet money on it, even if someone warned me beforehand. When I think "rock and roll" images of Kiss and Bruuuuce pop up in my mind, not "Blue Room". But they had to call the series something, and "Rock And Roll" works better than "Popular Music Of The Mid-To-Late 20th Century, Except For Stuff Like Frank Sinatra". (Their short mention of "grunge" -- albiet not by name -- turned up at the end of the "Punk" episode, which struck me as entirely appropriate. Doesn't explain why I like punk and hate grunge, though.) > I really loved the interview with Aruther Baker (New Order's producer) > where he went through each step of creating the song "Confusion." Okay, hands up everyone who slapped down the original mix of "Confusion" the minute the show ended. :-) - -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo@swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Alan M.
