I might be able to answer your question, since yesterday I read a very good article on the current happenings of the Orb in Sound On Sound Magazine. The FFWD project according to Thomas Fehlmann (the 2nd F) was orginally one Orb song that just grew too big and become the FFWD project. Now the article talks about the split between Alex and Trash and while it presents it from both sides of the coin the split sounds very nasty and I don't think you'll find Thrash (Kris Weston) working with Alex ever again, so since Thrash had input into the FFWD project i'd say that, unfortunately, it'll probably be the only one. Not to mention their label Intermodo, which it was on, going bust. Regards, John /-------------------------------------------------------------------\ | JOHN BUS (aka. I've been scratching around Camden for Orb bootlegs and thought you might like to know what they're like. Sorry if this is a bit disjointed, but I'm writing it at work... Wish You Were Here Trance Remixes (CD) - I like this one. Nice mellow loops grabbed out of the tracks with a relaxing drum beat. The first track is the guitar solo of Shine On against Little Fluffy Clouds, which works reasonably well, although of course the solo gets out of time with the rhythm. Also of note is Wish You which is really just the Floyd version with more pads and ambience. Also, the CD's really good quality and longer than the original. The worst bit is about 5 mins of "machine" noise at the end of one of the tracks! Not very Orby (apart from track 1 of course) tho. Dark Side Of The Moon Trance Remixes (tape) - This seems totally different to Wish You Were Here. Admittedly I got the tape version so its AWFUL sound quality. (If you can afford the CD prices I suggest you get them!). However, I really didn't like this as much. Its much more upbeat and sort of home produced. Not at all mellow and trancey. And the sample loops are well dodgey. Probably the best track is Great Gig, and at some points you can find the looping quite annoying to listen to. But then, maybe its because I liked the Floyd album so much and am predudiced! Anyway, the memory of Time with a huge drum beat makes me cringe even now (Although I thought that FSOL did the same thing rather well in Accelerator). Loads of people seem to like this one more than Wish though. Again, Us and Them is relatively untouched. The whole album has very obvious Orb sounds in it. Orb Alternative Mixes. - Has various mixes of The Roof is On Fire, and ...Kiss...? (I forget) These both seemed to me at first to be very 80's scratch lots of weird sounds over a house drum beat, and totally unlike any official Orb stuff. I didn't like them at all, so hardened Orb fans should maybee steer clear of shelling out lots of cash for them. There was also the dance mix of LFC (which appeared on the CD single), and the rest of the tape was taken up with mixes of HugePulsatingBrain (Orbital mix, Aubrey Mix, Orbital Radio mix...) which is what I was really interested in. However, again it was a bad quality tape so detracted from the trippy ambience of it all. I still think that the best mix of Huge was on EvilBro, but if you want more then here it is. That's it for now. I also noticed a new CD in Virgin under Orb: Mike Oldfield meets the Orb - Sentinel. The cover had obvious Assassin/UFOrb influences. Not having heard Sentinel properly though (isn't that the one that sounds VERY like the original Tubular Bells main theme?), I didn't buy it. One hand rests comfortabley on the stereo's volume knob. In the background, a publicist chatters away on the phone. People bathe in paperwork as the Orb's new one, "Orbus Terrarum" [sic] sifts thrdough the office air. The whole space is blacketed in joyous surreality. It's as if the future has suddenly and irrevocably condensed on the present. I throw a curious glance at Paterson, The Orb's anarchic ring leader. His enormous, deep blue eyeballs swing in my direction. He slightly adjusts the volume of the music. "I'm listening to the silences," he says. (And just for a second, I'm left alone with the befuddling notion that I'm standing face to face with the human force driving this contruct known as The Orb.) Essentianlly, The Orb has redefined the idea of what music is. Working with a host of musical and technological contributors (The Orb seens more a community that has synthesisized something alluring, quixotic and ultimately organic from the thin air of technology.) To me, it's appaerant that Paterson has not only tapped into a burgeoning creative consciousness, one that will flag the atmosphere of the 90s, but he has helped guide that consciousness. As a cultural figure, Paterson's significance may be as a champion of the eclecticism, that the technology/art front has handed us. Thanks to technology, an artist is no longer locked into a single format. He/She is not exclusively a musician, writer, painter, film maker, but rather all of these things simultaneously or in phases. In about five years, Paterson plans to walk away from music. He'd like to score films [fuck! he'd be like Vangelis only_totally_fuckin cooool at it...] or possibly paint. His belief that life is encoded with continous cycles of death, transformation and rebirth, drives his need to express himself. It's ironic that Paterson, a master of contemporary technology, has found his own equipment to be a suitalble vehicle for spiritual expression. "I'm a great believer in change. And I believe that we're losing something if we don't come up with something new." Paterson tells me that this world revolves in cycles. The anger and destruction driven punk movement of the late seventies preceded the love-driven house movement of subsequent years. The pendulum swings evenly both ways. "In 1998 or 1999, there will be a lot of hate in people's hearts probably. I can see it happening." And if England's new Criminal Justice Act (which outlaws people's right to gather, including attendance to raves) is any indication, maybe it already has. It was listed as Oldfield vs The Orb but in this case it was clearly the Orb by a knock-out - the remix is barely recognizable. Heavy repetitive backbeat with lots of spacey instrumental samples. Definitely one of their best remixes. Very recommended. Can someone help me on this one? This summer I saw a CD of the Orb called "Icons of the Orb" in a record store in in Holland. Two weeks ago I saw two other CD's called "Anthology I and II" also by the Orb. These CD's contain all kind of studio projects and not produced yet stuff. When I asked in other records stores no one knew about these CD's and they were in no computer file. Can someone tell about these CD's ,what they are and if they are any good? HI EVERYBODY... I'm struggling trying to find out the 39 min version of the Blue Rooom... I had it once but I discovered lately that it wasn't in its box anymore :-( I have pretty antagonistic informations coming from everywhere. At my local record store they say to me that it is impossible to find anymore. www.cdnow states it can be ordered as import under the catalog number BMG 10702-2 (confirmed by the Lazlo discog.) but BMG told to me that since the Orb is now on Island, they don't have anything from them anymore... So, can anyone give me a hint on what is true ? Is it really impossible to find out anymore ? Thanks for any info, Marc. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: strout@roch803.mc.xerox.com (Sean Strout) Subject: Re: THE BLUE ROOM EP Date: 16 Oct 1995 09:55:15 PDT <# Replies to this message will go to: <# strout@roch803.mc.xerox.com (Sean Strout) <# To respond to the list, please mail your message to orb@xmission.com. <# For help unsubscribing, say "HELP" in a message to majordomo@xmission.com. Hi Marc, the Blue Room EP is still widely available in the German format. It's also available on the double UFOrb which is a little rarer, but still locatable. If you are having trouble and want the German CD5, I can get and mail you one. It's a must have. ;-) sean ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Andy Hughes Subject: bootlegs Date: 13 Oct 1995 12:44:44 +0100 <# Replies to this message will go to: <# Andy Hughes <# To respond to the list, please mail your message to orb@xmission.com. <# For help unsubscribing, say "HELP" in a message to majordomo@xmission.com. >From: MarkT@bartley.demon.co.uk >Date: Mon, 2 Oct 1995 12:06:21 +0100 >Subject: Orb Boots >Wish You Were Here Trance Remixes (CD) *cut* >Dark Side Of The Moon Trance Remixes (tape) *cut* these mixes wern't done by the orb... andy (GQFM) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: David Potosky Subject: Selling My Soul Date: 27 Oct 1995 08:32:30 -0600 (MDT) <# Replies to this message will go to: <# David Potosky <# To respond to the list, please mail your message to orb@xmission.com. <# For help unsubscribing, say "HELP" in a message to majordomo@xmission.com. Well, where else would they go? Most shops that have "techno" sections seem to put the Orb there, but in stores that don't, there's certainly no "ambient/dance" bins or anything -- and if I saw them in the "new age" bins, I *would* puke, no doubt about it. - -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo@swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo) ::: On Now: Devo - Duty Now For The Future
