Perhaps someone can help me figure this one out... While looking through some strange CDs at a record store, I stumbled across an Orb CD that I didn't have. I would like to tell you the name of the album.........but that's my problem. Upon closer observation of the CD, I noticed it has 3 titles. On one side of the CD, it says "the ORB, the Visitor." On the other side it says "the ORB, New Music Night and Day." When I opened the case, the CD itself says "the ORB, Space Pills." For all I know it's a bootleg or something and I'll get busted for having it. Anyways...it's a killer CD, including my very favorite version of blue room, a few "unreleased" tracks, some live record mixing with Alex Paterson and somebody from a radio station KISS somewhere, and my favorite of all, Alex Paterson and the crew just messing around in the studio. Like I said...it is an incredible CD. I guess you could say I've been an 'Orb-head' for a long time, but this one threw me WAY off.....maybe some of you guys in Europe can help me out. Nonetheless...Perplexed am I. Hello, I am a new subsciber to this list. I am a thirty-year old, computer network administator. I have listened to the music of the Orb for about 2 years now. I have enjoyed ambient music for a long time. Brian Eno was doing the ground work for this music in the 1970's. I am also a fan of Robert Fripp, Kraftwerk, and Devo. The totally unrelanted artist I like include Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, and Return To Forever. So, let's see where that takes us. Hey all. Has anyone heard Dr Didg's "King Tut-Cardiff Casablanca Club Mix" remixed by Kris Weston and Lee Stapleford? It's a stellar track. I'd highly recommend it to Orb fans. It's sound resembles Pomme Fritz Orb, IMO. It's a long, dreamytune. The kind of music that might be a soundtrack to a dream, that is. It is also the type of track you'd hear in a "Twin Peaks" episode. The rest of the tracks on the disc aren't bad either, so it's a good buy. I assume its available even though I got the promo from a radio station. When I went looking for this CD a while back, I checked with over 100 shops in and out of the US and got the same answer from everyone, "It's out of print". I finally purchased it from someone who had it for $30US new. Has it very recently been re-released? Can you provide the source of your information as well as pointers to where it can be located? I'm sure a lot of people would like to get this if its true. Is the Ultraworld UK 2 CD pack something special? I heard something about a cardboard boxed version but don't know how/if it differs from the standard one available in jewel box for around $19-22US (not to be confused with the single CD US release). > >the orb - ultra rare trax (uk) $40 (P) > >the orb - morphology $30 (L) > > Shit hey I bought both of these for a combined total of $50 US dollars > (BRAND NEW) about a year ago and don't think their worth even the price I paid. Ultra Rare Trax and Morphology are widely available imports that go for $20-30US new. Ultra Rare Trax has a lot of duplicate stuff that can be found on other CD's, but Morphology is a gem (and worth every penny at that). I haven't seen this list updated on this newsgroup, and was curious as to how much the Orb Video: Patterns and Textures was up to? This is also a very hard to find video that I would expect people to pay $45-55US for (with the bonus CD). - -sean ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: abigail leigh cooke Subject: Re: New Frequent Update Nov. 11 (Coming Down to the Wire) Date: 12 Nov 1995 18:45:55 -0500 (EST) <# Replies to this message will go to: <# abigail leigh cooke <# To respond to the list, please mail your message to orb@xmission.com. <# For help unsubscribing, say "HELP" in a message to majordomo@xmission.com. about the aubrey mixes -- somebody else on the list was having the same trouble finding the double cd version of uforb too. i live in chicago and i know of about a hundred places where i've seen both of these cds. there is one store that always has at least one copy of the aubrey mixes for sale. i don't know if this has anything to do with it being re-released or what not, my point is that there are some out there and for less than 30 bucks. abby ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: David Potosky Subject: my auction Date: 12 Nov 1995 17:32:08 -0700 (MST) <# Replies to this message will go to: <# David Potosky <# To respond to the list, please mail your message to orb@xmission.com. <# For help unsubscribing, say "HELP" in a message to majordomo@xmission.com. I am not sure why John wanted to put this to the mailing list, but the reason I did not want to sell my Sun Electrics for $10 each was because it would cost me about $5.00 to ship them to Australia. I like them far too much to let them go for $5.00 each - especially when I paid like $20. As for The Adventures, I e-mailed the gentleman who bid that high, and I explained what John so thoughtfully pointed out. Perhaps he knows something I do not, but as far as I know there is no difference between the UK version and the US version. As for greed, etc. Hmm. I spent a lot of time collecting what I did, so screw off. No one here would sell their S.E. albums for $5. I didn't want to sell my collection, it was a monetary thing. I am sorry if some people feel that I 'milked' the list, but I was explicit - saying that I would reject any bids that I felt were inadequate, and gave a solid ending date, which I did not change. The _Aubrey Mixes_ CD was re-released early last year in the UK on Big Life, but was not released again in the U.S. Dave Steinhart at Ear/Rational Music (email ear@xmission.com with querries) was able to get them for like $19 I believe, but he recently deleted them from his mail order catalog, so maybe it's just gone back out of print. Copies should still be available, though. ob the old UK cardboard-box version of _Adventures_: A friend of mine had this at one point, and it was musically identical to the new U.S. 2CD version on Island. The box was basically a digi-pak, but with a booklet inside, rather like the original pressing of Sting's _The Soul Cages_. Nothing too special.... Pretty much every track on it is beautiful. I think most people agree on this. Adventures beyond the ultraworld, I think, is a bit more minimal, less interesting, but still an excellent album. In listening to it you can really see where The orb are coming from and how they evolved into what they are now. Next I'd recommend Orbvs terrarvm, which IMO is actually the best Orb so far (but that's just me). If you like that, maybe Pomme fritz (very strange stuff). Oh, Live 93's pretty good too. On a totally different subject: What is actually on the Blue room EP? Is that the one with the 40 min mix of blue room? I've been looking for that for years now and I've _never_ seen it, so I get the impression it must be pretty elusive. Is assassin on it too? Or was that a seperate single? All this was a bit before I was into the orb, so I'm not quite sure about it. Maybe that's why I prefer OT...? Anyway, any clarification appreciated. See ya later. Well, I've got the double cd of both the blue room and Assasin, it goes without saying that I am very happy about this situation but there are extra tracks, I cant remember exactly but roughly speaking both cd's have the radio version and the longer mixes such as the 39 min one also there is a "Mad professor" mix of one or the other and a "chocolate hills of Bohol" mix not to mention a car sticker which comes in its very own sleeve it reads: " The orb-don't leave earth without one" ......I couldnt agree more! I do not however have a car! BTW can we speak about the "Sons of Arqua" on this list? Hi, I am new on this list so a little introduction. My name is Nico Baars, 28 years old and huge Orbfan for several years. I am a journalist for a monthly Dutch dancemagazine, called "Bassic Groove". Everything about modern dance music such as techno, triphop, ambient. Also about fashion, film, video and culture. For this magazine I write reviews about, so called, ambient. And do interviews with artists like Alex Paterson (2x), Future Sound of London, Locust and Tournesol. Also I write articles about the Dutch government and drugspolicy. I think I got everything from The Orb. All testpressings, whitelabels, promos and original pressings on 7", 12", LP and CD. In UK, US and Japanese pressings. I got most of their remixes for other artist (about 50 remixes). I got two questions 1) I got a mispressing of a copy of The Aubrey Mixes on vinyl that plays a hip hop record on one side (I dont know the artist). Does anybody know anything about this mispressing and the value of it. 2) In the melody maker (UK) I read in an article that The Orb are demoing new material at The Fallout Shelter, Islands own basement studio. In the New Musical Express from a couple of weeks ago I read about their collaboration with Opus III singer Kristy Does anybody know about the new material and when it will come. Fehlmann has worked with them in the past, but he's no more a core member of the group than Alex and Thrash are. Well, this is the way I see it (I may be wrong): System 7 is Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy (both of whom have worked with The orb, on older stuff like Blue room). Thomas Fehlman also started working with The orb a long time ago, but he's credited as co-writing every track on OT, so I reckon he's become like a "permanent" member of The orb (if such a thing is possible, except Alex of course). As far as I know Thomas Fehlman has never been involved with System 7. Actually, Pomme fritz was co-written with Sun electric. Ah, yeah that's where Thomas Fehlman comes into it, he's in Sun electric, who are a German techno group. Er, right, I think that's sorted (?). Actually it's probably only confused matters, but that's the way it goes. :) See ya later. Fehlmann was a collaborator on "Outlands" from _Adventures_, he remixed the track (as Ready Made) for _Aubrey Mixes_, and then collaborated on "O.O.B.E." and "Towers of Dub" for _U.F.Orb_, all before the oft-slagged _FFWD_, _Pomme Fritz_, and _Orbvs Terrarvm_ projects. Fehlmann has also worked closely with Tom Thiel and Max Loderbauer of Sun Electric since that band's debut in 1990, and the similarities between how Sun Electric and The Orb have evolved are striking. Check out the newest SE album, _30.7.94_. The live mixing is brilliant, and has more than a little in common with the Orb's sound. As far as I know, Fehlmann has yet to work with System 7, though I don't doubt they'd make an interesting combination.... In my humble opinion, these are two of the best ambient techno CDs ever made. I'm sure many of you will agree. By the way, which songs were released as singles off UfOrb? I thought only Blue Room and Assassin were, but I remember hearing about singles for Towers of Dub and (I think) Majestic (!). Does anyone know anything about these, or have I done one too many lines of Kool Aid? There's *kind* of a single for Towers Of Dub -- it first apepared on the second "Perpetual Dawn" single (Orb In Dub), which features it as the A-side. There's also a Mad Professor remix on some of the "Blue Room" CD5s. (Someone told me once there was a "Towers/Blue Room" white-label but I have no real info on it. There's nothing even remotely resembling a single for "Majestic" but there's a live version (the "millwall mix") on the first Trance Europe Express compilation. By an eerie coincidence I happen to be listening to this very track as I write this. - -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo@swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: mr@nit.be (Marc Resibois) Subject: Re: System 7/orb links Date: 28 Nov 1995 09:35:01 +0100 <# Replies to this message will go to: <# mr@nit.be (Marc Resibois) <# To respond to the list, please mail your message to orb@xmission.com. <# For help unsubscribing, say "HELP" in a message to majordomo@xmission.com. There is a whitelabel/testpressing of Towers of Dub one one side and the Blue Room on the other side. I picked it up at Music and Video Exchange at Notinghill Gate in London. It seems to be very rare. I payed 30 pounds for it. Its only the albumversions so nothing special really. > >There's nothing even remotely resembling a single for "Majestic" but >there's a live version (the "millwall mix") on the first Trance Europe >Express compilation. That is a really fine live recording. Recorded live at Aylesbury Civic Centre on june 4th 1992. With lovely Monthy Python samples it is one of the best live versions i got from The Orb. This live recording is also to be found on Volume 5. UK mgazine Vox gave a free CD nr.3 with their march 1994 issue. On it a live recording of Towers of Dub (Live Dog On the Mix). Recorded live at Brixton Acadamy at 28 november 1992. This is a fine one too.> For the MixMag (another UK magazine) live tape serie Alex Paterson mixed on nr. 9 on one side and Mixmaster Morris on the other side. In his mix Alex Paterson used an exclusive mix of O.O.B.E. (The Pool Mix) and The Blue Room (Ambient Demo At Marks Angelos). This mixes have never seen a proper release but sure are worth checking out. The Ambient Demo of the Blue Room sounds like excerpt 606 wich appears on the 12" The Blue Room remixed by Frank The Wulf. The mixes can also be found on the bootleg CD The Visitor. Sytem 7 and Alex Paterson. In januari System 7 release a new single "Interstate" through Butterfly/Big Life. Their fourth album Power of Seven follows on february 12. With contributions from The Orbs Alex Paterson, Carl Craig and Youth. In an interwiew I did with Alex Paterson a couple of months ago he told me he will work with Steve Hillage and Thomas Fehlman on a project. That project must see the dayligt within a couple of months. Does anybody more about this project. That is all. See ya. Because of the problems with Big Life Paterson did not collaborated on the System 7 Fire and Water albums. Instead he told me an album of the work between Hillage, Fehlman and Paterson will see the daylight under another name and on another label at the beginning of 1996. Since then I never read or hear anything about this project. Instead we all read the messages about the collaboration of Paterson on the new System 7 album The Fourth Power on Big Life !!! And that is something I find really strange. Because Paterson is still complaining about Big Life. And what to think about the collaboration with Kris Needs. The Godpiece Project on TEX 4 must be a taster for an album that will be released on Inter Modo records. But managementproblems on this label keeps The Orb from releasing it. On Orbus Terranum there is also a little taster of this collaboration but their must be a whole album of this stuff. Anybody know where his music stays. > PS Lazlo, I am not at home for a couple of days. After the weekend I let you know if their are any numbers on the Towers/Blue Room whitelabel.
