Hi all, I used to be subscribed to this list but then something terrible happened and I was accidently removed. But finally, I'm back on the list and happy to be here. To introduce myself again, my name is Kathy Russell I am an ambient Dj /activist in Austin, TX. I also work on a few television shows at KVR9/Texas Student Television at UT. There's homepages for all the shows and the addresses are included in my signiture. To be to the point, I realized last night that I would honestly throw my body in front of a flying bullet for the Orb. I kinda knew this already, but I guess I really realized it last night. I hope I haven't missed any good stuff while I've been gone, and below are a few questions I'd like to ask. - - will somebody post the tour dates again? Along with any new additions, if possible? - - do any of the orb's members ever post to this list? If not, I think we should find a way to get them to post regularly so that their fans can help them in their crusade. - -how rigid are LX and thrash on the no interview policy? Lastly, I just wanted to say that I love all you beautiful little fluffy people and I wish the world was Orbland. Both my parents can tolerate and sometimes even like the Orb. My dad is real fond of the Orb's humor (espically, Towers of Dub). My mom responds more to the bass and beats, UFOrb is a favorite. My dad seems to actually like Orbus Terrarum - espically Oxbow Lakes and Plateau. For reference, my dad likes mostly classical but also reagea. My mom likes pop-stuff, espically New Order. My dad is from Greece, my mom is from Israel. And my sister lives off my CD collection. >I know the orb scares my friends dog and that my parents don't like the >orb at all!! This time, I had my act together, and brought my copy of the "Blue Room" single with the Mad Professor Remix of "Towers of Dub" (recommended, by the way, unless you don't like the noise of pitch shifted dog-barking..), in order to get it autographed. He was very afable, and commented that "Those guys never sent me a copy of this". Surprising but true. The show, by the way, was disappointing, since the local 18-year-old Danish sound guy never got the right speaker stack to play. It seems like he's jumping every train! About Black Dog: They're one of my favourites but I would definitively not describe them as being "dark ambient"! They were (before their split) on a record company called Warp Records which is about the only company I'm interested in right now. There's two shops that I can think of right away. Street Dance Records which is on Vestergade and Baden Baden which is in the basement on the corner of StudieStraede and Kattesundet )or is it StudieStraede and Colbjornses Gade??) anyway that dosen't really matter here's some info on how to get there. When you walk down the main pedestrian street (Stroget) comming from the city hall you go down the first street on left hand (this is either Kattesundet or Colbjornsens Gade). The first parellel street to Stroget is VesterGade on your right hand you will find Street Dance. If you want to go to Baden Baden you do exactly the same thing over again except for StudieStraede is the second parellel street to Stroget, you will find Baden Baden on the corner of the street you come from and StudieStaede. On StudieStraede you will also find another Record Store called Sex Beat Records which is right next to The Black Universe if you fancy whips, chains and leather underwear. ;) If you need a map I can fax one to you. Street Dance Records is, I think, run by DJs for DJs which makes the guys behind the counter pretty f****** arrogant. If they haven't heard about what you're asking for they are pretty good at making you look stupid this is also a trick they like using if what you ask for is just a couple of months old. I once asked for an album by The Mighty Bop (extremely cool French hip hop) and they more or less laughed at me in my face because THEY hadn't heard about it and therefor it had to be either shit or non-existent (oh! the ignorant bastards). In April I had heard the song "Sideways on My Mind (Tales from the Wood Shed III)" by The Woodshed on the radio. In June I went back home to Denmark and dropped by at Street Dance and asked for it, at first he didn't know what I was talking about then he remembered something and then slagged me off saying that it was impossible to get hold of because it was over a year old. A month ago I read the May '95 issue of some DJs magazine and found a review of the newly released "Sideways on My Mind" by The WoodShed. Bastards. It dosen't hurt going by there though, sometimes they've got what you need but still, am I the only one having experienced this DJ arrogance?? The guys at Baden Baden are much nicer, they actually do something to help you. One final thing. I'm still looking for that The WoodShed single, I think they're on Cloak and Dagger but I'm not sure. Does anybody know where I can get this? It dosen't matter if it's on a comp. or second hand (I prefer CD) I just want it. There's a remix of it called "Radio WoodShed" but I'm not interested in that one. [Tale of Extreme Attitude and General Bad-Mannered Sales Staff elided..] > It dosen't hurt going by there though, sometimes they've got what you need > but still, am I the only one having experienced this DJ arrogance?? I'm afraid not. I've more or less given up on going into Street Dance for that very reason. The place is usually full of snotty-nosed kids playing video game catridges, and _they_ are one step up the evolutionary ladder from the guys behind the counter. But, in general, I find Copenhagen to be a Really Bad Place to buy hard to find music due to the above mentioned attitude that, "If I haven't heard of it, it's no good anyways, so why are you looking for it". I also encounter this attitude for everything from bicycle parts to plumbing supplies. I'm amazed that people put up with it, but then, when it's the status quo, you may not have much choice. I second the recomendation for Baden Baden (and the attached Ambient Annex right next store) and Sex Beat records. There are several other good record stores on Lars Bjornestraede (the same street as Baden Baden). There's also a couple of good places near the Planetarium. Sorry about the vague directions, but I'm street-name dyslexic. In general though, I prefer to trade over the 'net, or better yet, hit the stores in Toronto. The only thing Cophenhagen record stores are good for is disgorging occasional copies of long out-of-print Durutti Column singles. grant.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Alan M. As far of I know this is the only bootleg wich have The Orb=B4s peel session of The Stooges punk record No Fun on it. A Strange recording with Alex Paterson even on vocals. It is really a terrible record but for the fans........ There are also a few other difficult to get remixes on it. Like the YMO Nang Def mix, Fast Forward the Future (Zodiac Youth meet Alex Paterson) and the terrible Peace in the middle east (actually a joke by Alex and friends). I problably would not buy this only for the music but more for the special things on it. And that YMO remix is very very good. Try to find that original Japanese pressing of it. It contains five mixes and their are all great. Stay in touch Nico On now Jake Slagenzer - another weird jazzy techno record on that highly recommended UK label Clear. It is that strange guy U-zig. But this one is reaaly good. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: roddk@netmanage.com Subject: ffwd|>|> Date: 20 Dec 1995 13:28:45 PST <# Replies to this message will go to: <# roddk@netmanage.com <# To respond to the list, please mail your message to orb@xmission.com. <# For help unsubscribing, say "HELP" in a message to majordomo@xmission.com. Well, I got the FFWD cd down in San Fransisco recently. It's the import, simply called FFWD. It's got the Orb and Fripp on it. Here's a track listing... 1) Hidden 2) Lucky Saddle 3) Drone 4) Hempire 5) Collossus * 6) What time is clock 7) Can of bliss 8) Elevenses 9) Meteor Storm 10) Buckwheat & grits 11) Klangtest 12) Suess wie eine nuss I've listened to it all the way through once... it is very different than what I expected, having every orb album and system 7 with Fripp on it. The * by Collossus #5 means that percussion was done by Hasson Ramsey. It's basically the only drum beat you'll get on the whole album, basically. Written by r. fripp/t. fehlmann/k. weston/d.a.r. paterson (orb music, big life music, crimson music) produced by the orb & thomas fehlmann guitar & treatments, robert fripp electronics by kris weston & thomas fehlmann ambient treatments, d.a.r. paterson mixed at bj.g summer 1993 engineered by andy hughes original session engineered by david singleton agnabled by fil char gonidred (huh?) also says no thanks to tony arnold ... Last week I read the DJ The Dance Music and Clubscene Magazine, a monthly UK magazine. In this magazine I read a review about the new System 7 album Power of Seven. # In actual fact Miquette and Steve Hillage invite a busfull of famous and talented chums around to help them do it. And so it is that this, their fourth, and best album has the same collaborative collective feel as previous efforts, only this time around it sounds as if System 7 have moulded their sound to fit their collaborators, creating the most diverse and eclectic collection of tracks so fa, a kind of what is what and who is who of the dance world. Interstate kicks things off and it is pure System 7 with Steve Hillagegiutar nosing its way through the mists. If the percussion is a bit racier it is only because Poer of Seven is a less noodly, ambient voyage than we are used to. As if to prove the point Carl Craig steps into the frame with Civilisation and some trademark rhythm patterns, sparse and correct. Alex Paterson drops in for a cup of tea and lays down an awesome dubby juggernaut that is pure Orb. DJ Lewis and Youth are also on board with the latter doing his goa trance thing and the rest of the album shifts gear cleverly, blending laidback ambient with rasping breakbeats and coming together to somehowe, form a cohesive and rather magnificent whole 9/10 # Promising enough I think, Nico ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Regis C Phelan" Subject: Space II Date: 11 Dec 1995 14:24:23 -0500 (EST) <# Replies to this message will go to: <# "Regis C Phelan" <# To respond to the list, please mail your message to orb@xmission.com. <# For help unsubscribing, say "HELP" in a message to majordomo@xmission.com. Since I'm not on the Orb list, I figure this will go to the admin and some time later get forwarded on to the list. ** brag/namedrop mode on ** Steve Hillage was kind enough to send me a tape of the new System 7 album, which as someone mentioned before is due to be released in February (in the UK, at least). ** haha-i'm-cool mode off ** The album is called _Power of Seven_. The tracks are as follows. Interstate Civilization Davey Jones' Locker Big Sky City Good Morning Night Owl "The Osmosis Suite": To the Power of 7 Hangar 84 Chicago Indian Mektoub Europa I keep hoping they're going to completely blow away everything they've ever done with each new album, but _Power of Seven_ is yet another mild advance over the previous release. They're developing steadily, and this album in fact contains some of the best tracks (IMHO) they've ever done, on first listen. "Interstate", the first single, is definitely not the strongest track on the album, but is enjoyable nonetheless. It's a driving song! I'm interested to see how it is treated in the remixes. There were no credits in the tape case, so I can only speculate as to which tracks are collaborations with whom. I *think* "Davey Jones' Locker," which is an excellent, long, spacey floaty dub piece with lots of herbage reverbage, is the Orb collaboration. Mike
