Also Underworld which was a bit of a gamble ( i only heard a bit of it at a mates flat) but htis is also fucking good... And Finally the peel sessions which is no bad...I listened to it last night with the light s off and headphones on to experience the 3D sound more clearly and it was headfuck material........really good mixes from all 3 songs and 'no fun' is good for novelty material.....well worth buying. Dolby Surround: A scheme by Dolby Labs, utilizing matrix technology to encode three channels of sound in only two recorded channels. Dolby Pro Logic: A refined surround scheme, enabling the encoding of five channels (left, right, center, surround left, surround right) in only two recorded channels. surround sound: any number of schemes to decode or emulate Dolby Surround, without actually using Dolby's patented technology. These schemes are usually grossly inferior to Dolby's scheme, mainly consisting of a timed echo and accentuation of certain groups of frequencies into the second set of speakers. Matrix technology: a way of hiding additional channels in a two channel recording. The old Dolby surround method is to encode the mono third channel into stereo so that the two identical channels are 180 degrees out of phase in relation to one another. This signal is then added to the regular stereo sound. Then, when the signal is played back, (ignoring the regular stereo sound) the left front speaker is pushing out, and the right is pulling in, thus the two speakers are cancelling each other out, and no sound is heard (except the regular stereo sound). To hear these out of phase sounds, a special processor is used which compares the two channels and fixes (syncs) the out of phase sounds and sends them to the back channel. The Pro Logic technology uses 90 degree phase shift for the two additional channels, which doesn't completely hide these two channels, but does add a slight echo to them. This is why Pro Logic sound sounds more 'spacious', even on non Pro Logic equipment. Now, DJs use phase too. If you've ever heard your favorite dance tune sound spacey and 'swirly' at the discotheque, it's the DJ playing two copies of the same song slightly out of time, or out of phase, to each other. This is a fairly old trick, and I'm sure the state of the art of phase manipulation on the dance floor is way beyond this. So, it's entirely possible that LX uses phase manipulation in his recordings, without using Dolby Labs encoding. The Dolby decoder would find these phased sounds and redirect them to the other channels, oblivious to the original intention of the artist. It's also possible that LX is using Dolby's technology, and not labeling his records as such because of Dolbys high licensing fees for their trademarks. One way to tell is to find a Dolby decoder that shows when it is decoding. If it is decoding constantly, you can probably assume that the recording is indeed in Dolby Surround. If it only occasionally decodes, then it is being fooled by phase tricks. The only sure way to find out is to search LXs stacks of electronics, looking for the Dolby Labs Pro Logic Surround encoding chip. Good luck! As far as multiple speakers at Orb concerts, have you seen the mixing board they use? It has quite a few channels to it. They can hook it up so that the samples of people talking pan not from left to right, but from left front to left back, then over to the right, and back again, without encoding them with any surround technology. In fact, as I have explained, surround is a technique for encoding/decoding of recorded sound. It would be silly to use surround for live sound; creating a kind of bottleneck for the sound. Imagine it, five channels from the stage encoded into two at the mixing board, then immediately decoded back to five and sent to the speakers. With four speaker car systems, what is happening is that the larger back speakers are accentuating different frequencies than the smaller front speakers. LX likes to play with his sounds while repeating them, so a sound that is rich in highs one repetition will seem to come out the front speaker. The next repetition, it may be bassy, and will seem to come out of the back speaker. When he really gets going, the sound will seem to fly around your head, making you think you have a real Dolby Pro Logic Surround System in your car. -- Hugh Finney (junk@cruzio.com) You know, I hate to ask. The scheme (as implemented on laser discs) crams all six channels into one channel (left analog) by using "psycho-acoustical modeling" to remove sounds that you supposibly can't hear anyway. Of course, if you happen to have a set up that differs from Dolby Labs, YMMV and you may hear 'holes' in your music or movies. That's why they want you to buy all new equipment. They play with the sound even more by using 'dynamic sizing' of the channels. That is, if the left front channel is quiet, less information is sent to it, and the extra space (or bandwidth) is used by the other louder channels. This means quiet sounds will always have less resolution (sound worse) than loud sounds. Not a very good scheme for the Orb, methinks. -- Hugh Finney (junk@cruzio.com) You know, I hate to ask. But, are friends electric? -GN ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Hugh Finney Subject: Surround Corrections (no Orb content) Date: 17 May 1996 15:13:53 -1100 This is a retraction of sorts. It would seem that the information I provided concerning Dolby's various technologies was incorrect in some respects. Having re-read the surround FAQ (ftp.csn.org/Laserdisc/ld03) and re-visited Dolby's web site (www.dolby.com) I offer the following corrections: From the fertile mind of Hugh Finney sprang: >Dolby Pro Logic: A refined surround scheme, enabling the encoding of five >channels (left, right, center, surround left, surround right) in only two >recorded channels. Pro Logic is only four channels. L,R, center, and surround. AC-3 (or Dolby Digital) is the only Dolby scheme which offers stereo surround. >The Pro Logic technology uses 90 degree phase shift for the two additional Dolby doesn't use 90 degree phase shift, AFAIK. The center channel is composed of sounds that are in phase (exactly the same in both left and right channels), and the surround channel is driven by sounds 180 degrees out of phase. In addition, my comments concerning AC-3 using dynamic channel resizing MAY be wrong. In the FAQ, it states that the channels are all the same size, with no resizing at all. However, on their web site, Dolby describes AC-3 as a technology with flexible parameters. One of these parameters is the usage (or non-usage) of channel resizing as I described it. Dolby is somewhat unclear as to whether or not the consumer implementation of AC-3 (named Dolby Digital) does or does not use this particular aspect of the technology. However, one thing is sure. AC-3 uses compression and psycho-acoustic modeled bit reductions to achieve 16:1 compression. You cannot accurately reproduce a complex signal using such a large compression ratio. The closest parallel I can come up with is watching your favorite movie in Quicktime. Ugh. Sorry for the non-Orb content, but information needs to be more than free.
