R&S 96105 Three track 12" 1) Hangar 84 (Carl Cox's W.W.Ultimatum mix) / 6.13 min 2) Hangar 84 (The Gods Must Be Crazy mix by System 7)/9.02 min 3) Hangar 84 (Live Mix- at The End London 7/2/96) / 7.17 min It's a regular techno release. The three mixes are made for the dancefloor. Heavy beats, the Cox mix got some distorted sounds on it and find it's way to the floor. The System 7 mix starts with an ambient touch to it, but after one minute the fast beats come in to it and made this also a very floor friendly mix. Fast beats, hi-hats and a simple synth. Their is not many of Hillage's guitar on both mixes. The live mix is recorded at The End, one of London's finest clubs at the moment. You can imagine this also hasn't anything ambient on it. My guess is that what's up on the Ticketmaster page as far as the ENIT festival goes is *all* that there's going to be, considering that there's only a couple of months before the season for outdoor concerts ends. I'm not aware of any legit CD release of the MixMag tape Alex and Morris did. There may be a bootleg, but Auntie Aubrey only exists because Alex got sick of seeing their remixes bootlegged to hell and gone, so it shouldn't come as any surprise that he doesn't consider a CD bootleg of his MixMag session to be his "first mix CD". > Is there anyone who had ever seen Mission 92 on CD or vinyl? But a couple of years ago when The Orb are having there real problems with Big Life Alex told me in an interview that they had a couple of albums waiting. At that moment he talked about Pomme Fritz, Orbus and FFWD, and that was a couple of years back. Also a couple of months ago Andy told us on this list that the new album already was completed. In may he told us that they were mixing it and that the album should arrive in september. People asked him why it took so long and he answered something like the label deciding when it will be released. My point is that the new album (Orblivion?) already is waiting for us. IMO it's the decision of Island to release it in 1997. Liking any of the original tracks here is not necessary, with one or two possible exceptions (read below). If you are new to The Orb, then liking Banco De Gaia, Leftfield, Pink Floyd or FSOL may be a good sign for liking this album. Then again, it may not. (This is all IMHO by the way) TITLE: AUNTIE AUBREY'S EXCURSIONS BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY - THE ORB REMIX PROJECT RELEASED BY: DEVIANT RECORDS (e-mail deviant@volume.demon.co.uk) CAT NO: DVNT12CD (for the CD) TRACK LIST: CD1 Material - Praying Mantra 17.05 Killing Zoe - Democracy (The Russian Tundra Mix) 17.52 Keiichi Suzuki - Satellite Serenade (Trans Asian Express Mix) 13.10 Zodiac Youth - Fast Forward The Future (Bucket and Bong Mix) 7.18 Primal Scream - Higher Than the Sun (Higher Than the Kite Mix) 8.46 Ready Made - Ambient State 0.49 Wir - So And Slow It Grows (The Orb in Atlas Mix) 6.57 Yasuaki Shimizu - Secret Squirrel 7.47 CD2 Yello - You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess (Orb Extended Remix) 12.58 Innersphere - Out of Body (Logical Mix) 4.25 Depeche Mode - Happiest Girl (Orbital Mix) 7.38 Erasure - Ship of Fools (Orbital Southsea Isles of Holy Beats Mix) 8.52 Sun Electric - O'Locco (Orbital Therapy Part 1) 6.05 Maurizio - Ploy (Battersea Was An Island Of Mud Mix) 12.38 Time Unlimited - Men Of Wadodem (Orbital Mix) 4.20 Paradise X - 2 Much (Start And Depart From Paradise Mix) 6.35 Pop Will Eat Itself - Home (Home Sweet Home Orb Remix) 11.13 Love Kittens - What Goes On (Orbient Mix) 5.15 With this album comes a small booklet. Within, this booklet is a glossy layout. There are the usual logos, quotes, discography and promo article. Reading through it, I find a rather cynical feeling on the `chill out' scene. But it is very thoughtful and interesting. The discography is very descriptive. The quotes are amusing. And the article is informative. Normally I'm put off by little booklets and other silly novelties coming with albums. The Trance Europe Express compilations had one or two good books about the artists, but by Volume 4 they degraded into fashionable teenage bollox. The X-Mix compilations had a set of DJ cards for Volume 5, and a techno quiz for part 6. Bubble gum and stickers next, I'm sure. The little Orb book is nice. Don't be put off by it. The tracks are mixed together with a little extra production by the Orb. This makes it a good solid piece of work, so, although it is a compilation, it retains a certain homogeneity. The first CD offers a great deal of pleasure. The Material track is quite lively; it's very FSOL towards the beginning. Many smooth samples and whispy sounds. It progresses nicely becoming a little tribal (Air 2 style). Democracy is very spacey and quirky, a bit like Daniel Pemberton meets Orbus Terrarum. By the time Satellite Serenade begins, the listener(s) is well chilled. This track is just beautiful. Suddenly, one is reminded of the days of Ultraworld. I'm also reminded of FSOL's track Ill-Flower on Lifeforms. Yes, yes, the Orb are still number one! A lovely beat kicks in later on. Very Ultraworld. Fast Forward The Future is even better. Fuck me, how I've missed this stuff. This one is like Magestic on UFOrb. Higher Than The Sun is very effective. Very Leftfield. The Orb do a magnificant job remixing this one. Lovely track, lovely track. So psycadelic. So help me, the vocals are even good (they play a small part, anyway). The synth and rhythm work is juicy. Ambient State is a short and sweet interlude - a smooth 808-State (Pacific State) type synth, complete with Dolphins and birds. The Wir track is very nice. This is another rock/indie track that is completely Ultraworld-ized. Secret Squirrel is a complete wind down, just the thing to cap off the tracks before. Very chilled and smooth. What a great disc CD1 is. From Satellite Serenade onwards is the best part of the album. The second CD start off with a Yello remix. Bits and pieces of conversation, coupled with animal sounds and other whispy noises, open this track. This is a typical interlude - waiting to build to something. Slowly but surely it does form into a rhythmic trip. Fairly slick and energetic. A bit varied from the previous disc. Out Of Body is weird and abstract, like Pomme Fritz, and smooth, like Obus Terrarum. Happiest Girl is quite fruity at first, but liking Depeche Mode vocals may be an advantage. Yet another rock/pop track is orbified. It has a nice Orb-techno feel. Ship Of Fools starts off with a slick techno sound. The Erasure vocals crop up later on. Nice tribal-ish, Ultraworld rhythm. O'Locco is very clubby. A slow trancey track, with a dubby feel. Ploy is chillier. Nice feel to this track. This is reminisent of Plateau or Valley on Orbus Terrarum. There are fast soft beats later on, though. Men Of Wadodem is another orbified rock outing. Not very spacey, more bassy. 2 Much is chilled out. Birds and seashore sounds. A jazzy piano jams away. Vocals from the original track are messed with. Nice rhythm accompanies the piano. Good track! Home is a reggae track - like a toned down off-beat version of Perpetual Dawn. What Goes On is rock/guitar type of crap - the Orb do enough to signal their presence. It's a little spacey in parts. Not great though. That ends the album off. The album is varied; it has Orb techno, astract musaks, smooth ambience. Only in the second disc does the listener feel less spaced out, and more down to Earth. The whole album is very nice, and is just brilliant in places - i.e. the first disc. Once or twice, though, a track may not be interesting enough. This is only due to the original input of the tracks. Having said that, this is very much an Orb creation. It should be in your Orb collection right beside their original stuff. These guys can take a track, suck it right into their little world, chew it up, and spit it back out at you. In the little booklet, one gets the impression that Dr. Alex is bemused by the `ultraworld' chill out scene that he feels has come and gone. He feels it's time to come back down to Earth (cue Orbus Terrarum) and explore new avenues. In that respect, this album is a taste of paradise lost. djdan "Marijuana is Mother Natures way of saying 'High!'." ;-)---~ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Darius Telycenas Subject: Re: Spanish Castles in Space Date: 08 Aug 1996 21:56:13 +0300 >> Huge Debate here right now - what language is that?????? > >According to some texts on 'ultraworld', it's from a russian radio >program regarding fishes. I don't think it's all the great, not their best but also not their worst... it's kinda dubby & hiphoppy, somewhere between the Erasure rmx & the Lisa Stansfield remixes...I think the vocals ruin it for me...Wendy &Lisa aren't the world's greatest singers, & much of the singing/rap is left in the mix. Date: 15 Aug 1996 17:21:53 -0400 The videotape of the show where that particular fraudulent healing took place was very much edited down. A friend was taping the same show to try to get his own samples out of it, but consequently he didn't hear any ..... The editing is most evident at the "Hallelujah" exclamation toward the end of the sample, where the slice at the h sound occurs. The original broadcast focussed about 20 minutes on this guy, and he was pretty pathetic looking in the sense that his acting was about as good as Tim Allen's .... The bit that I myself find most amusing is where it's explained that "the man can control pain right to where he needs it" as though someone actually needs the sort of pain you would have if you needed a morphine drip. Does anyone actually know where the Marijuana Bomb sample (at the beginning of "Spanish Castles" from Live 93) is from? That one is also quite amusing .... Now ... about the ENIT festival .... Welcome to this list Michele, A lot of really crazy Orb freaks (including me) are discussing everything from live shows to samples to t.v. doctors at the moment. Everything in relation to Dr. Paterson and friends. I should say friend because I understand it's only Alex and Andy at the moment. After the discussions about the peel session II and Auntie Aubreys mixes we're looking for the new stuff to arrive (next to the remixes). According to Lazlo, the running man behind this list and the "unoffical Orb page", it's januari 1997 for the single and februari 1997 for the new album to arrive. So we have to be patient. > >my best wishes to everybody, > Thanks and talk later Nico BTW I'm also very interested in Aphex and FSOL, for discussions mail me privatly. > Michele > >michedi@ba.dada.it > > ># Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? ># Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. > > # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: orbico@GlobalXS.nl (Nico Baars) Subject: Amnesty Orb picture discs Date: 17 Aug 1996 10:20:14 +0200 Hi Orbies, Does anybody know about the so called Amnesty picture disc 7" with pictures from The Orb on it? I've got three of this picture discs on 7" There's no music on it. It contains pieces of pressconferences from people from Amnesty International about fundraising and all the problem with human rights in the world. It's about artists like U2 and Peter Gabriel making money for Amnesty. On one Tracy Chapman (!?!?) is talking about human rights. It's very strange. I bought the three of them at a record fair because I thought it contains music. Both sides play the same stuff and all three contains the same parts of pressconferences from Amnesty. Nice for the collection but I rather have some rare Orb stuff on it. Discs 1) Picture of Alex Paterson with Jim Cauty (KLF) 2) Picture of Alex and Thrash in the kitchen making pancakes 3) Picture of Alex, Nick Burton, Thomas Fehlmann and another one from the live shows (sorry, don't remember his name). It's a picture from UK mag Select. Does anybody know if there's a legal link with Amnesty about these singles? Alex was angered at the ENIT organizers for listing "The Orb" as a live act because he was only planning on djing for the entire tour. He, supposedly, joins Meat Beat Manifesto on stage and djs during their set. 2. After ENIT ends, Septemberish, Alex & MBM are takig their collabor- ative group on a separate tour. Alex Paterson was a roadie for Killing Joke and their bassist Youth's spinn-of dance act Brilliant, who eventually featured Jimmy Cauty on guitar. When Brilliant broke up around 1986 Cauty teamed up with Bill Drummond to form the highly succesfull JAMS/KLF empire. Alex Paterson was also keen to work with Cauty and the pair joined forces as the Orb in 1988. They worked in Cauty's studio Trancentral and it was there that all early KLF and Orb recordings were created. The first evidence of their working was Eternity Project One on Wau! Mr Modo. Then The Orb's Kiss EP arrived and the pair started to remix other peoples work. Paterson and Cauty created A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That rules from the centre of the Ultraworld and came succesful with their remixes of KLF's 3AM Eternal and more like Fischerman Friend (Sun Electric) But was it Orb or KLF?? Classic album Space arrived. Orb or KLF? Alex and Jim worked on it but the team split. Jim and Bill go on as the KLF and Alex go on with Thrash as The Orb. The original press release says that Space was official intended as the debut from The Orb, but was no Jim Cauty's own creation as he removed all of Alex's contributions. But it's told that Space is still a collaboration of Alex and Jim. So, this is the link between KLF/Orb ( I know it's a short explanation but I think it's enought to see how thing went) Nico On now A Huge Growing.... (claps abound throughout the room). The intro message said to introduce myself, so I am. I first got into the orb in Indiana, USA. I was at an underground record store (I think it was called underground records), and they were playing Current '93. I inquired about it, as I had never heard such sounds before, and he explained it to me, but alas it was already sold-out, and it wasn't even released yet. He steered me towards the orb section. He said I might like it. me: "What's the orb like?" guy: "well it's ambient techno mostly." me: "what?" guy: "ambient." me: "what's ambient?" the story picked up from there. I bought the vinyl Live '93 and that same week found a 12" perpetual Dawn single. I believe I even saw the perpetual dawn 12" picture disc at a store, but I decided to pass it by. (stupid me) well, now I buy whatever I can find. well, I pass on the bootlegs usually, but if anyone knows where one could find a copy of the Cleveland, OH, USA show from the Happy Happy Joy Joy tour, I'd be much obliged. well, I've wasted enough bandwidth. may the forces surround you. I will now give you all a critique of sorts of the Enit Festival in Holmdel, N.J. at the Garden State Arts Center. I hope this can be a discussion starter, rather than everyone just reading it and saying.... " uhh....o.k." It's long and doesn't just talk about the Orb. The Beginning of "A Musically Strong Weekend": First of all I went to "Super Sting" Friday night at Buzz in DC. Carl Cox, Sasha, Laurent Garnier, LTJ Bukem, etc.... With the sound system from hell and a main dance floor the size of Price-Costco, trance was everywhere. Very good stuff. 35 sync'd Intellibeams and a 30 Watt Krypton/Argon Laser show. Carl Cox was the most skilled DJ I have ever witnessed. The only problem was the volume. It was so loud that at 4 AM I left the club and coudn't hear ANYTHING. A helicopter buzzed above us (SE DC is a pit) and it sounded like a slinky. I was worried that my ears would not recover in time for Enit. A grand show this was... Drove from DC to Northern NJ the next afternoon. Arrived at Enit too late for the "tree planting" Did it happen? I have no idea. Got my meal wrist band and went to find grub. The line was long, but the food was amazingly good. Cheers to the Krishnas for a really good meal. Very curry. Filling as hell. Sun Ra Arkestra was playing. By the way, they allowed us to bring everything in Except: 2 packs Nerds (food), 1 disposable Camera (I took the remaining pictures in front of the dude so that I wouldn't have to walk a mile back to my car), and 1 bottle of water (the other 3 still had the factory seal on them so they were O.K.) Blankets were allowed. Went and bought a silly smart drink. I was really thirsty and had more cash then usual so I bought a 3 buck "Quake" or something. They were handing out these papers that explained all the negative possible effects. If you read the paper you read alot of jargon to get the message that if there was anything wrong with you, don't drink this. Cheers to the folks for "know it before you take it". I don't care that most dont think "L-Arynine-KryptineGlotomase" does anything, if I'm drinking something that can inflame your damn hemmeriods I wanna know. (my hemmies are fine thanx). Went and put down our rain shells in a great place and then we all sat on them. They could double as rain coats too, but it was one B-ootifle night and it wasn't gonna pee on us. The festival was in good favor with "those that decide on the weather". The deal is that you cant get too close to the stage and stay sitting on your blanket/coat/tarp. As soon as a band starts playing, each successive row of people have to stand up to see over "that dork that stood up in front of me" and pretty quick it gets to you. So you stand up. Once you stand up poeple start walking on your coat/blanket/tarp and screw it up. So here was the solution: Each time a band plays put on your coat then your backpak and stand up. Big deal. Nothing for anyone to walk on or steal. During intermission just sit on down and spliff out. It sounds tedious but it's the best of all possible scenarios. O.K....so a sign said that Black Grape/Love n' Rockets/Flying Neutrinos wern't gonna be there. Move on. MBM started next at approx 8:30/9. As usual they kicked ass. Jack Dangers is just the percussion god. No two ways about it. No 4/4th's in this set. He 4/5thed and 7/9thed and so on. When alot of bands like MBM play, they use DATs or drum machines or whatever (see the Moby thread from hell). Everything was done in front of you for this set, and the AUDIO KICKED ASS. I have never/ever/ever heard sound that good at a concert of festival. I can honestly say it was much better than Super Sting the night before. There was NO distortion what so ever and it was loud enough for me. The bass was just so nice it tickled. Lady Miss Kier was next. I'll let someone else critique that. I just have no idea. Porno's For Pyros was next (about 12 midnight). I know they are not the Orb, but I have to say that Perry kicks the almighty ass. They had women on stage on a seperate high pedastool (sp?) on stilts in a giant wide poofy skirt, topless, juggling torches and spitting fire. One girl actually caught her dress on fire but this guy came out and was able to put it out. I don't even know if she noticed. That was insane. If you're heartily baked by this point you just stare and go "uhhhh...whoa.....uhhhhh...." anyways if you have read the text at the Enit site at www.teeth.net, you know that the guy is thinking on a slightly different wavelength than John Doe. So every once in a while the guy says stuff between songs, and if you read the Details interview rather than paging strait to Anka, you realize this guy is way too smart for his own good. He is burning his candle at both ends. You have got to care for the guy because he really seems like he is taking all the worlds problems on his shoulders. Anyways, there set was fantastic, and together with the audio quality it made for some awesome music. Very awesome. they say that they cancelled the first two shows because they were having problems "doing it right, in time" and at first I didn't believe them. Low ticket sales or something. I don't care if all these bands are some of the best there are, most of america just isn't as smart as we are. But after being at this thing surrounded by 10 thousand and seeing the quality of it all, I believe what they said. You could't do this in a hurry. Now...to the ultimate...the Orb (about 2 am). The crowd was moving back for the intermission before the orb, so I pushed my way through the mud to the barrier, front row in the middle and just waited. I was beginning to get tired of the wait when the most beautiful girl (stunning) got in beside me. It's amazing how a beautiful girl can make time pass... ANYWAYS... I was it, man...front row the middle. (next to her) The set list was (as posted on andy's console): 1.Delta 2.Blue Room 3.Plateau 4.Secrets 5.Asylum 6.Fluffy Alex came on with Andy in typical form. No hoopla. Alex brought on a nice looking girl who say behind him and listened with her eyes closed. She's one of us! Andy, minus any girlfriend, but plus hair got behind his "console". What a giant comprehensive arangement. A helper changed 4 foot strips of paper that held listings of all the samples on his giant mixing board. Good old LX just had his turntables, disc players, mixer, and orange chelsea stocking cap. The first song ("Delta") was somewhat interesting. Someone on this list had said previously that the Orb was going a little Jungle/Drum'n'Bass on their next endeavor. They were correct. Not for amatuers, it was a nice meld between ambient (the best) and jungle (I don't like jungle much). Andy was taking care of the beats while LX was sampling in the bliss. I really think Andy is responsible for the new sound. He sure liked to move his hair to it. Blue Room was next (my god this song and huge evergrowing b.t.r.f.t.c.o.t.u.l.y are the meaning of life). Really nice funny sample from the Cranberries (in your heaaaad, in you heaaad...) Plateau was really different. It was as though the Chemical Brothers had gotten ahold of it. You can tell that LX likes this song. Alot of breakbeat that the sound system handled with glee. Secrets and Asylum got mixed up for me. I should have watched when the helper changed the sample list tape, but I wasn't thinking about it. More ambient then jungle then ambient then jungle with some fantasticly funny samples put everywhere. LX chooses the best samples. Then ambient some more then more Jungle with good'ole Andy hair flying... then the song that everyone in the place recognized (I should give them more credit, but I bet alot of people thought "oh....it's THIS group" when they heard little fluffy clouds.) A good mix. Very much like the mix on the "patterns and textures" CD I got with the video. I was very pleased to turn around and see that although they were avoiding the mud, there were alot of people getting down to Orbness. probably all the spliff that was being smoked that night. (EVERYONE.) It's kind of hard not to groove to the orb when you are under the influence, whether you liked it earlier or not. Although alot would consider it a sin, I didn't stay for Rabbit in the Moon. I had to drive back to Maryland, and nearly didn't stay awake for the 4 hours between 3:30am and 7:30am that it took. But the brother and the wife were both at work that day. Date: 25 Aug 1996 15:11:56 -0700 hello everybody, i'd like to introduce a discussion.Since the moment i bought "adventures.." and "u.f.orb" i realised that the orb was a typical "ambient-house" band. but since "pommes frites" was released i haven't been able anymore to consider alex patterson like a house or techno composer. i mean, what have become orb today? a sort of ambient band? how can we compare "ffwd", a boring cd in my opinion, to the beauty of "adventures.." or "u.f.orb"? i think "orbus terrarum" rapresents a sort of moment of transition, a mostly dub-oriented work.but what will happen in the future?is orb becoming a new brian eno's "ambient 4-on land" or "thursday afternoon"? is the ambient-techno gold era over? # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: zerozero@juno.com (Frank T Giarratani) Subject: Re: ambient or techno... 'Satellite Seranade' has the first 10-15 seconds of the mix missing from ths start. 2. The Zodiac Youth mix is NOT the 'Bucket..' mix. It is the 'Foxes Glacier Hints Mix' from the remix 12". 3. The DM mix is the 'Pulsating Orbital Vocal Mix' (I think someone has already mentioned this...?) 4. The Erasure mix has almost one whole minute missing from the start of the mix. 5. The PWEI mix is funny to listen to in mono, 'cos the sampled voice at the start of the mix is talking all about hi-fidelity vs mono! 6. The 'Secret Squirrel' mix is the 'Orbient Mix' from the Saxophonettes 12", but the first 40-45 seconds are missing from the start of the mix. Err, that's it, I think! And for some list content: I finally found a copy of the new System 7 single, "Hanger 84." The mix by Carl Cox seems pretty different from the original track -- in fact I couldn't find anything from the original in this mix at all. Pretty minimal and hard, but good stuff. The second track rules, though, with the muted guitar loops giving the piece a smooth and laid-back feel absent in the original. The live mix is good, too, though not that different from the album version. A must have for my collection, though.... Can someone tell me what gear the mastering lab would have been using to "put" it in mono on the transfer if it *was* a cop out? No mastering lab would "convert" something to mono for a digital medium in which you *have* to account for two channels. All the mastering lab does is copy the tape and check for digital pops and clicks. They're going to have their gear set up for separation of the two tracks, and they're also going to leave the stereo separated if they have the option any more so they don't forget it on their next project -- after all they're getting *paid* to copy these tapes. The mastering lab would not be in business very long if they made mistakes of this calibre. Now as far as vinyl being the sources -- maybe that's all Alex had at the time (were he the one that compiled it). Maybe the original tapes deteriorated. Or maybe he feels that vinyl is "warmer" sounding (he is a DJ after all). Maybe he's fascinated by cross-format differences (most record collectors are) and wanted to play with it so that the vinyl would be different from the CD. Maybe it's a prank (after all the Orb started out as an offshoot of our favorite pranksters, the KLF). But the point is that the vinyl sourcing and the decision to make it mono were the decision of whoever compiled the tape, and if Alex compiled or sanctioned it, we should be happy with it. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: jeff lindsey Subject: Re: orb Digest V2 #19 Date: 31 Aug 1996 09:58:28 -0700 (PDT) Hello, my name is Greg (though it says Jeff).
