A couple months ago I heard DJ Confucious (Rabbit in the Moon) spin a song that I really liked. Later I ran in to him and he said it was the Blow Monkeys, but he didn't remeber the song title name or if it was a remix. The song had a great Orb-like dub feel to it with a floaty, Flamingo guitar sound throughout. I've been trying to track it down, but had little luck with only the above info. Any clues ?? Date: 08 Jan 1997 09:42:05 GMT Hi there Orbsters! Happy new year! Smiley is back - and he has the details of all the uk promos for 'Toxygene'..... ;-) So, I'm completely broke, but happy. Here goes... Release date is still January 27th, btw. * Island Records, 1 track radio promo cd (ORBCD3) no sleeve, comes in an empty jewel case. Toxygene (Edit) 3.39 Interesting point to note. The band are just referred to now as 'Orb', not The Orb. The CD just says ' Orb', produced by: Orb, engineered by: A.Hughes, mixed by: Orb. There are two stickers on the case: Sticker one: 'The pioneering explorers of modern electronic music are back after a lengthy but worthwhile wait. _"Toxygene"_ began its life as an _Orb_ remix of Jean Michel-Jarre's "Oxygene" that was angrily rejected because it used absolutely nothing of the original track. This new single and the album to follow in February prove that the _Orb_ still transcend the pack of software manipulators by creating original sounds and atmospherics, distinctive rhythm patterns and inventive melodic arrangements.' Sticker two:'Now a leaner, meaner twosome with more badass beats and in yer face live shows, Dr L.X. Paterson unveils the best yet _Orb_ at the NME Brats night on 22nd January (An all-Appearing show with Propellerheads t.b.c and Lionrock) at the LA2. Killa remixes of _"Toxygene"_ included by Way Out West, Kris Needs, Fila Brazillia and more'. Unfortunately, 'Propellerheads' have dropped out and been replaced by 'Spooky' (I know 'cos I got my tickets yesterday - two weeks to go!). Nothing against Spooky, but I really wanted to see Propellerheads. Still, what a line-up! Should be a good night. Are there any other UK listers going? Anyway, onto the vinyl promos. There are two - both on normal coloured vinyl (boo!). Details as follows (all timings are by me, and are approximate). There's no info on the labels of either promo - just A or B to identify each side. Track names are taken from stickers on the sleeves. * Promo one: Black sleeve with new Orb logo (complete with construction lines, like a draftsman's sketch - hard to describe, but you'll understand when you see it.) Island Records, (12 IS 652 DJ) a. Toxygene (Kris Needs Up For A Fortnight Mix) 9.35 bears about as much resemblance to the single as the single does to 'Oxygene'! still, a good 'stomping' techno mix. b. Toxygene (Way Out West Begbie Mix) 7.25 has some recognisable bits of the single. pretty uptempo, but 'softer' than the Kris Needs mix. good mix. * Promo two: Peach sleeve with new Orb logo. Island Records, (12 ISX 652 DJ) a. Toxygene (Toxic Genes Orb Mix) 7.40 basically a much longer version of the single, with a nice ambient mid-section, before kicking off again. a great mix, and my favourite on first listens, but it's pushed pretty hard by... b. Toxygene (Fila Brazillia Mix) 5.57 a brilliant mix, taking the best bits of the track (which the mixes on promo one ignore almost completely), including the main hook, and then adds loads more - great! All the above are just IMHO, of course, but I knew you'd all want to know. Finally, if Andy Hughes still lurks on the list - any chance of meeting you and LX before or after the gig on the 22nd???? (F*****g cheeky I know, but you've gotta try, haven't you?) laters. -- Smiley # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: strout@roch803.mc.xerox.com (Sean Strout) Subject: (orb) orb article Date: 08 Jan 1997 08:30:44 PST >From Chris Sice >Newsgroups: alt.music.orb >Subject: **ORB FEATURE** >Date: Mon, 06 Jan 1997 16:52:26 +0000 > >Thought visitors to your site would be interested to know that there is >a feature on The Orb on dotmusic, the online music magazine for the >music industry. > >Check it out at http://www.dotmusic.com > >The exact page reference is http://www.dotmusic.com/MWtalentorb.html > >Whilst you're there there's a full magazine giving the latest music >industry news, the official dnace charts and a massive dance magazine. reposted from alt.music.orb, FYI. While at the local downtown HMV, I happened to spot a copy of a CD entitled "The ORB Anthology 2". Now, never knowing that the ORB ever put out an anthology, I quickly bought it (at a hefty inport price, too). The CD has several excellent remixes of early ORB stuff (up to and including U.F.ORB) but I question its authenticity. It's been released on a label called GEMA and states that it is an "O.r.b. Music production (c) 1994". It has 8 tracks (74 mins) including remixes of OOBE, Blue Room & Towers of Dub, and other tracks with titles like "Alex vs. The KLF", "Reefer Spin In The Galaxy" and "Orb vs. Coldcut - Kiss FM". The cover has two computer-generated faces looking at each other with a pink band down the middle and a textured blue background. Does anybody have any information on this CD (ie. it's origins, who compiled it, etc). There is absolutely no information or credits given in the insert. I apologize if this has been discussed before, as I am quite new to the group. Also, is the ORB Anthology 1 available? Tracklisting Anthology 1: 1 Trippin On Sunshine (from Eternity 1) 2 The Roof is on Fire (from the KISS EP) 3 Huge Ever Growing Brain (the full 19 minute ambient version) 4 Huge Ever Growing Brain (the Orbital Dance Mix) 5 Little Fluffy Clouds (The Dance MK2 mix) 6 Towers Of Dub ( from the withdrawn remix) 7 Perpetual Dawn (Ultrabass 2 mix by Andrew Weatherall) 8 Valley (live at Glastonburry june 1993) Some tracks are hard to find at the moment. So when you're missing stuff I suggest get it. The sound quality is not bad. BTW there are about 13 or 14 bootlegs from The Orb on CD. I don't recomend Anthology 2 because the sound quality is crap. It's pretty interesting though because most of the versions are early attempts or demo versions or just live jams (like the Orb vs. KLF tracks.) The really cool tracks on it -- I think -- are Towers of Dub (Solaris Mix) it's pretty good and ORB vs. COLDCUT which is an extract from a radio show they spun together on Kiss FM in NY. Anthology 1 is a little better, I think. Anthology 2 is best if you simply MUST have EVERY extant orb recording, because A2 is mostly outtakes and demos or just them goofing around like on Music 2 Funk 2, a silly jam that later became Sunburst (yuck!!!) Morphology, on the other hand, is really, really good. It has the "official" completed versions of what is labelled Orb vs. KLF on Anthology 2 --- it's called "6:01" on Morphology. Also it has Third Whale Trip (a U.F.Orb-era remix of a song by Voices of Kwahn) and Laughter Meditation -- the Reality of Impossible Things, an orb remix of some guy Hosono Haruomi. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Andy Subject: (orb) cool music I heard at Electric Boogaloo Date: 11 Jan 1997 00:30:30 -0800 Well, I doubt LX will get very mad if I post this since the single will be out soon. But as I was looking through ftp.xmission.com a question popped up. As seems to be the custom though, I'll first introduce myself. I'm a first-year computer science student in Holland, and I've been interested in the Orb since I saw them on Pinkpop '94 in Landgraaf, Holland. I especially like the earlier work (U.F.Orb and Ultraworld), but I like Orbvs Terrarvm too. And now the question: on ftp.xmission.com there is a textfile describing samples the Orb used on their earlier albums. Is there such a file for the newer ones? I'm interested in sources of samples they use, but as they're from very different sources, tracking them is a huge project. Any help in tracking sources of samples is appreciated. Date: 17 Jan 1997 00:26:22 -0500 (EST) Hi folks, I flew down the west coast in October of 1993 to see Paterson and crew perform at The Warfield in San Francisco. I remember that this was a truely awesome night. Some of you posted your reactions to the list and seemed to be in agreement. But the series of posts I remember best was from a list member who spent part of the night next to a man who was filming the show. As it turned out, a company named Nitty Gritty, or something to that very same effect, began selling copies of this video, entitled, I think, "An Evening with The Orb." At the time, the price was $55, and the list member posted a phone number and an address for Nitty Gritty. Getting a copy of this has been on my to-do list ever since. Does anybody know if this tape is still offered? And if that's not known, does anybody at least know how I could find Nitty Gritty? I've moved around a lot and don't have my printed copy of the post anymore. Date: 18 Jan 1997 21:39:44 -0500 (EST) hello to all the orb fans! :) just wanted to submit a little introduction to the list about myself.. ive finally decided to join the digest of the list to keep up to date on the new info, especially with the new orb album a few months away... woohoo!! anyway, my name is jason enos, i am 21 yrs old, and i am a student at Indiana University studying business marketing. This is my last semester here at school. I have lived in many places throughout the states, and I currently live in Northern California in San Jose. I originally got into the orb around the time the orbs adventures beyond the ultraworld first came out. At about the same time, I was beginning to get into more trance and ambient related music. I have been a major orb fan ever since. I have a few singles, all the current albums, some bootlegs, and even the Orb Adventures Video. =) I have longed to see them perform live, but every single time they are in the states I am either not around, busy, or unaware of them playing nearby. Hopefully being on this list will avoid that. In terms of other music, I have had a long history since early childhood of being into electronic music. While I enjoy many different styles of music, a majority of my music is somehow associated with electronically composed music. Some of my favorite groups include, depeche mode (ultimate fave), future sound of london, orb (doh!), front 242, stabbing westward, and the cure. I am currently taking a MIDI and computer music composition class and I plan to *attempt* making my own ambient music based off of my long list of influences. I look forward to reading orb info and kewl tidbits from other fans around the globe. =) sincerely, jase # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Marc Resibois" Subject: (orb) Toxygene on eMpTyV Date: 19 Jan 1997 15:59:00 -0000 They got Toxygene (as well as some other orb stuff) featured on last Chill out zone saturday. For example, Dr. Alex Paterson's name is listed in the credits for that one album with that "Fuck it up, Pigface" song, but his name doesn't appear in any of the individual song credits which leads me to believe he had nothing to do with the project. He probably just hangs out with Martin Atkins. As for an orb mix of Pigface, unless anyone else has a reliable source to quote, I think that it is once again Pigface stretching the truth a little. As far as I can tell, it's a new track, and a darn good one, too. Very dubby, imagine a smoother _Orbus_Terrarum_ track or a more chaotic _Adventures_ song. Date: 22 Jan 1997 01:50:44 -0800 Yes, it's a joke. And for all of you who actually took me seriously, why don't you just head down to your local shopping mall and pick up a copy? You can get it anywhere. I was just trying to point out that some people on the list are trying to sell totally common stuff (at least to some areas) for incredibly ludicrous prices. There are quite a few places in the US where you can still find the 2CD version of UFOrb (with the Blue Room disc). Geez, I found Aubrey Mixes here USED a while back. I had no idea it was so hard to find. I think there are even several stores right in my area (Sacramento, CA) that still have it new - there are probably other areas, too. Here's my advice: if you're willing to shell out some serious money for an CD you don't have, you might as well invest some time in contacting somebody in an area where it's easy to get. You can send them the money and have them ship it to you. I've done this a bunch of times, and made some pretty good friends in the process. That way, you can both save money AND have the satisfaction that you didn't give any hard-earned cash to some geek who probably paid $5 for a CD he wants to sell to you for $40. Hope that helps. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Smiley Subject: Re: (orb) Orb Signing & Toxygene sample at NME Date: 22 Jan 1997 10:01:11 GMT Anthony Bryan writes: > > The Orb will be participating in the BRATCHATS on Wednesday 22nd, from > > 1.30 - 2.30 pm GMT. Date: 23 Jan 1997 01:51:31 GMT greetings orbsters! it's 2am in london, and i've just got back to my office, where i'm crashing before getting the first train home tomorrow morning, for some serious sleep...... seeing as they only had an hour to play with, andy and lx played a blinding set. i've taken the tracks from the lights/mixing desk info i could see... the opening was a sample of the 'Sportsnight' theme tune, which will mean absolutely nothing to anyone outside the uk... tracks played: - Secrets - ??????? (wasn't paying attention) - outlands - salt - toxygene - d.j asylum - assassin all the 'old' tracks were superb, but so was toxygene. however, 'd.j. asylum' was a fantastic new breakbeat track that seemed to go on forever, and will have the chemical brothers crying into their beers... there was also a fantastic 'perverted' sound of music sample - 'my favourite things' reworded to vocals something like 'tight leather booties and clitoris rings - these are a few of my favourite things' - it looks crap in type, but it went down a storm... all the stuff in the press about orblivion being a jungle album is bullshit - there's only one track with a jungle vibe, the rest is heavy dub/techno. i spoke to andy after the gig who told me the following: d.j asylum should hopefully be the next single... the cranberries asked them to do the 'zombie' remix, not island - who still haven't heard it yet... the 'gut' in the gut-lane 12" should be pronounced the same as 'boot'. apparently the singer is thomas fehlmann's girlfriend, who's a big star in germany... andy and lx are really happy with 'orblivion', 'cos it's what they want to do.. that's it. apologies for any incoherence, but i've had a beer or twelve..! laters. -- Smiley # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: derrien@club-internet.fr (Jean Christophe Derrien) Subject: (orb) Re : Orb IRC Date: 23 Jan 1997 10:58:05 +0100 David said : :Jean Christophe, :I KNEW that was you on the IRC. And that's nothing negative or so, because I really like almost everything Orbital made. But Orblivion doesn't sound as I expected. And for me that's a very positive thing! Because I really was afraid after all the talking about changing directions etc. It's harder, meaner and it got some very powerful dub tracks on it, heavy breakbeats, distortion and loads of samples. A lot of voice samples (not coming from the uk, I'm not familiar with the most of them) but there's that sample from the excellent British movie Naked. That monologue (written that way?) last for almost the whole track (I think it's called 72 time 11.43, but I don't know for sure because I got a tracklisting but there are hidden tracks included). And when you know this movie, you can imagine how it sounds. Orblivion starts with a cartoon-sample just like that one from the Ren & Stimpy show (you know from the happy happy joy joy tour) and than it's well going with the breakbeats, a little ambience and lots of fun. They did it again! First come the whole story on The Orb and Alex and Andy answering some questions. "Alex reminds me of Bhudda as a wide boy. The whole project started off as an Orb in Love album, he continues, Ultimately though we didn't really see that as reflecting what we had been going through for the past couple of years given the hassles we've had with past management and past record companies. Those problems should be resolved by the time the album comes out" "The real reason why we did Orblivion is because we're living in misconceived time. In a sense in 1997, if the reckon it's three to four years than the actual calendar is out of whack with the time of Christ, then we're living in misconceived times. So the year 2000 should be the next year, but not many people know that" ....... There's a drum 'n bass flavour on Orblivion, did you have any misgivings about this? Andy: "That sort of arose from doing live gigs. It's quite hard doing big venues. Not everyone wants to just come down and sit on the floor and chill out so you end up doing it a bit more up anyway. We were getting a really good reaction. We thought if we could go and do something similar for the album it would be even better for the live stuf next time. So it sort of headed that way. It was quite a lot of fun doing it that way as well". There were no misgivings. No, underlines Alex, Sure there's a change of mood on the album, but if you look at the album before, there was a shift in mood, and then one before that." "I think the danger is if you've got the time and the gear to do it you can easily start disappearing up yur own backside, says Andy, We come up with a lot of ideas and rather than try and cram it all into one thing this time we've spread it out, otherwise it's like trying to fit square pegs in round holes." Alex and Andy tells that their working on a new live show. New ideas for a stage-set, more visually interesting. "We want something that catches the imagination. We're working on that at the moment. A lot of moving stuff maybe as well. And the pyramid hah, hah, hah......... Come on boys, Holland is waiting for you! Date: 24 Jan 1997 09:08:04 -0600 Dib is a recording method that the Rasta's used in the 60's and 70's... and sort of became part of thier religion...But basically it consists of taking a sound or a track of music and cause it to change it's spatial apperance frequently throught the piece. For example a Voice might sound like it's floating out in space for a moment, and then abruptly appears like its in front of your face. This made it easy for them to produce large libraries of music in a short period of time. A rasta record store owner would Record a Record in the back room From varaois track compile together of other sources. And be selling that record in thier store later that night. This style has been passed on to AMerican Pop music Where Big name producers, dub popular acts. Adrian Sherwood and Keiyh LeBlank are two popular modern dubsters. And in the world of abient Dub, there of course is the Orb. The Playlist included: Secrets Toxygene Delta MK II All of the songs rocked with the boys going totally MAD on the sampler-all the songs were sprinkled liberally with vocal samples ,some I recognised from Live 93 and other new ones. Secrets (which I think is the electro drum'n'bass song) was really good and in this mix the so called drum'n'bass was very understated and quiet, the samples taking precedent. Toxygene(which I bought today, can't wait to get home and stick it on the blaster) also rocked with mad racing engine samples at the begining and end ........ Delta MKII was pretty mad.....in this song it was full of samples about America being invaded and had a Pomme Fritz feel to it - where samples dominatede the actual song rather than actual music....but maybe that was just this paticular mix ,who knows? There was also a wee bit of talking with Peely(cool bloke).... It's the one with the original version of Slug Dub (I've heard about 3 myself). This one didn't get rave reviews (unlike the first two ORB albums), because (I think) it was compared to the first two albums. On it's own (without any comparison), I think it's pretty good. Intense at times, more ambient at others. The aforementioned previous albums are the Orb's Adventures in the Ultraworld and U.F.ORB. I've never met a person that didn't like these :). Sometimes spacey, sometimes down-and-dubby, they're simply fabulous. You should be able to get these at any large music store. Other ORB releases are Live 93 / Evil 39, a collection of (you guessed it) live performances. I like it, but I also know a lot of people who don't. Personal taste, I guess. Then there's the venerable Pomme Frites (the Orb's little album), which is, well, interesting. The Orb having fun in someone else's recording studio, I think. I like it, but I have to warn you -- it's different. Of course, there's the Auntie Aubrey Excursions Beyond the Ultraworld (I KNOW I've got that title wrong somewhere, but it should be close enough) collection, which features the Orb remixing everyone from Pop Will Eat Itself to Yello (????). It was released a few months back. It has a distictive blue cardboard fold-out case with a big thick booklet chock full of orbformation. Also highly recommended. Then there's those bootleg releases, of which I have only one. Try to get these if you can; they often contain stuff never previously released and are generally looked upon favourably. As well, you can usually find remixes of the Orb on ambient compliations and such. I suppose I should mention all those singles they've released. If you simply must have every remix of a song, you should pick up these. The rare ones are the ones you usually see people trying to sell or auction off on this list for ridiculous prices. Well, that about stretches my (meagre) knowledge of the Orb. I recently had the extremely painful experience of seeing Mad Professor live. They/he opened for the Greyboy Allstars (a really good acid jazz/funk group) in San Francisco. Mad Professor's set seemed to last for seven or eight hours, and they turned the auditorium into a giant cheeba-fest. The fact that Mad Professor's music completely sucks fat donkey cock didn't help matters much, either. Every crappy song sounded exactly like the one before it. The rasta-mon/odor warrior guy kept yelling into the microphone and nobody could understand a word because it was so distorted. It was the most wack show I have EVER seen. It got to be so damn stupid that they even brought some high school kid out of the audience and tried to get him to rap to ther music. Now, I love the Orb, always have, and nothing, NOTHING Mad Professor has ever done could even come close to LX's genius. As far as Mad Professor being "king of dub", I don't know. It's like Orb wants to come back to the club scene with a good pumpin' title. A friend of mine compared it to Beat Box from Art of Noise; when I hear it, it makes me feel like I'm on a train (although it's not really like Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express). The Toxygene remixes are quite good, but my favorite song (of these releases) is the version of Delta MkII that I heard before during the Zeebruge and the ENIT-LA concerts. I remember at theses concerts that I went wild during this track. And Rose Tinted is a good ambient title. Are Delta Mk II and Rose Tinted live versions ? I feel that way. For both tracks, it says "Dal vivo a Roma". Is it an Italian set ? If you can track it, there's an Orb article in the last issue of Wire, a UK magazine. There's an interview of LX (about his favorite records) and a review of Orblivion. Didn't read it yet. PS : (Non Orb) I really like the Trance remix of Pink Floyd's Atom heart mother track called Summer 68'. Thought it was not a rip-off, when I saw Hackers the movie, I heard the track unmixed. As far as Mad Professor > being "king of dub", I don't know. Maybe if I had a $30 Casio sampling > keyboard and a digital delay pedal then *I* could be the king of dub. I don't think this is quite fair. Have you listened to any of Mad Professor's studio recordings? It doesn't sound like it. Dub is primarily a studio medium anyways (though I saw Dub Syndicate live here and they managed to put on a most dubby show through heavy sampler use). Many of the dub-related ideas that the Orb use originated with this man. I'd recommend the Lee Perry/Mad Prof. discs. Early dub was in fact made with equipment cheaper than the aforementioned casio keyboard - we're talking home made outboard reverb units and 4-tracks. Lee Perry's Blackboard Jungle is an excellent example of this primitive style, and the source of the "Calling de meek an' de humble, welcome to blackboard jungle, don't you fumble, just be humble" samples. can't remember which track that's from, maybe start and depart to paradise? the album was the first stereo dub album, and much of it was mixed from 4 tracks to 1 track and a second track added (ie a solo flute) for the stereo effect. pretty far out, at the time - 1974 or 75 I think. I am looking for >interesting places, people, and web pages that concern these guys. > let me save you some time. if you're looking for something interesting on dj spooky that superwack kid, you ain't gonna find it! listen here, there is absolutely nothing (N-O-T-H-I-N-G, got that?) interesting about the spook. it's called hype. don't believe it. anyone who tells you that he has "mad skillz" is obviously the same fool who was dissin' the mad professor. dj spooky that pretentious fuck couldn't mix cement. and as for matching beats... i have two words for you. TRAIN WRECK! his jungle sets sound like a ten car pile-up. you'd think that after all this time that he's been spinning in public he'd improve. it's a sad world when a talentless pseudo-philosopher like the spook gets loaded with hype while there are skilled professionals out there doing interesting things with a pair of 1200's and no one knows who they are. as for the guy who saw dj spooky spin and loved it.... i have a hard time with anyone who refers to their friend as "my drummer." so you're in a band! who isn't? who cares! by the way, if you're gonna try to reply to this msg, be prepared i was there in the beginning. i saw the spook at abstract wave long before anyone knew who he was. he sucked then, he sucks now, and he always will. ::REX C ARTHUR:: ::voyagerco::nyc:: # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: DJ Robin*V Subject: (orb) Toxygene Date: 31 Jan 1997 16:58:31 -0700 I can't believe it!!! Just wanted to say, that my skinny white butt found both discs of Toxygene here in Phoenix, Arizona, and it's awesome! the live tracks are incredible!! and toxygene! wow! one dissapointment though... when I learned that the part one box would fit both cd's I envisioned a slip-case where two slim-line CD cases would fit inside, not the plastic things the way it is.. It sure is cool, but what do you do with the slim-line case and artwork from CD-2?? hmm.... yeah, small bitch, no big deal... artwork is phat, the orb is phatter!
