From: "Ormond R. Oxenham" Subject: (orb) Dancing In The Street...Know it? Date: 01 Oct 1997 17:35:38 +1000 Hey there everyone, I was just wondering if anyone out there has seen the documentary, "Dancing in the street"? It was put together by the BBC a little while ago, and talked about the history of rock'n'roll. Anyhow, towards the end they got onto Electronic artists like New Order (Dance), Derrick May(Techno), Frankie Knuckles (House), and you guessed it The Orb (Ambient). They interviewed Alex Paterson, he was cool (Reminded me of a calmer version of Keith from The Prodigy). While they were talking about The Orb they played an awesome song. It had a film clip made up of deserts and lakes being flown over (in a plane or chopper). Everything was off colour (Blue/Purple) and it tended to have a nature theme to it. The song was of average pace with a distinctive beat and had a girl on vocals. She wasn't singing actual words but it was something like: "oooo O ooo O ooo O oo O O" (Don't laugh, I can't sing ;-) I REALLY, REALLY need to know what song it was. So if anyone out there caught the doco (Or if you can work out my brilliant description ;-) could you please tell me the song and what album I can get it on? Thanks a heap. Also, they mentioned The Orb having three Platinum albums. Could anyone please tell what they were? See ya later, Ormond R. As a long Mike Olfield fan (my first Orb remixes were the Sentinel Oldfield vs Orb), I can tell you that it is indeed a 12" Mike oldfield, a track taken from his last album, VOYAGER. I read on the official System 7 site that they did a remix, but they didn't tell which track. According to the track listing, it's rather strange because Women of Ireland was released like 8 months ago but without the System 7 remix. I have a CD with these tracks : 1. Women of Ireland 3.37 (not the original one, an edit of the second track) 2. 12" Lurker mix 9.10 3. Transient mix 9.38 1,2,3 remixed by Henri Jackman & George Shilling These remixes are dream - Robert Miles - oriented, not very good. Hope that Steve and Miquette did something better. Another thing : The Rachid Taha's Rorhomanie remix by System 7 (that Smiley mentioned earlier) is available on his best of limited edition 2CD (with other remixes as well). I vaguely remember a recent posting with a different extension, but didn't copy it down. I've got a question for you. 2.) What is the KISS ep by the Orb? Was it ever released on cd? Is it currently available on any compilations? Oh, a third thing: 3.) I've bombarded the certain people on the list with this before, but can someone CONVINCE me to purchase the Live '93 cd? We just got another one in at the store in which I work...but I'm loathe to shell out $16 U.S. for something that might just be a piece of crap. Before anyone goes ballistic over this comment, let me explain: MOST groups, IMHO, sound HORRIBLE live, ESPECIALLY those groups which rely so heavily on studio processing. Tangerine Dream is an exception (in fact, their live stuff from the 70s and early 80s beats the studio versions hands down). What I want to know is: is the audience obvious? Can you hear idiots from the audience screaming? Or was the performance "direct- lined"? (For that matter, how is ISDN from FSOL?) First, it is a double CD, and second there is no notice of audience. The sound is really impressive. I paid $30 for it when it was first available as an import. It was actually my first Orb CD, but I have never regretted getting it. As for the FSOL ISDN, that is really good as well. I think their new CD, Dead Cities, is a lot better, but for a live broadcast, ISDN is pretty impressive. Numerous critical reviews have acclaimed this album as one of the best live techno albums ever. Some of these live versions are actually better than the studio ones. There is some crowd noise, but only at the beginning and end of tracks. 140 minutes of Orb!!! How can you go wrong; there's something on here for everyone. It was my first Orb, too, btw... It was actually my I was lucky enough to pick up the import for US$14. (It was a promo...) Very much agreed -- it's a fantastic album and the remix of A Huge Evergrowing... is wonderful. If they did this tour like they did their '95 tour, then it impresses the living snot out of me that they can do the beats off a pair of turntables and keep their other machines in sync with the records. (No MIDI here... =) A audience cheer at the beginning and end of each set is small and servers as a clean transition between each song. Remember: the songs aren't all from the same concert. The opening sample from "Little Fluffy Clouds" is just too cool... > first Orb CD, but I have never regretted getting it. As for the FSOL > ISDN, that is really good as well. I think their new CD, Dead Cities, is ISDN rocks. For those of you in SoCal who occational listen to Groove (before the weird stint of looping that Spice Girls sample for 48 hours...) they used a sample from track two of this album. "Everbody online? Looking good..." My previous roommate who normally doesn't listen to techno loves that album and kept it for the better part of two months. Just kept playing it over and over again while doing homework. Anyone else got a copy of ISDN BLACK? Thats the one that looks like the normal one but instead of an un-KOOL looking white cover, has a super-sexy looking black cover and has 3-4 songs different. As far as I know the difference is that when they did the broadcasts, they thought it went so well, they decided to try and release it, and ISDN BLACK was their demo of it, then when they were really going to release it they changed the colour and some of the songs! For instance, ISDN WHITE owners don't get "Hot Knifes" (at least not on the album anyway). Orb related? I personally thought the ORB remix on the YOU remixes was awful! If someone asked DR LX to do a stereotypical ORB remix (i.e. nothing like a proper ORB remix) then this is what he would have done, and I think that is what happened, They were asked to do one and did one. If they had done one as shocking as Democracy (Killing Joke) then I would have been happy, but honestly it is one of the worst mixes they have done (apart from the erasure one!!!! :) What were good were System 7 (I wonder why!!!), Mad Stof, 808 State and Graham somebody-or-other, Astralasia (supper band (so super in fact I added an extra p for Perfectly supper!) :), Yamataki EYE (great percussive shit here) and the one I can't remember the name of (Master Builder track 7or8 on CD1 sounds like XXXXXXX XXXXXXX or something like that! :) Also......IM(not so)HO Angels Egg is their best album apart from the fact that the Island of Everywhere is their best single track! What's the sense of a live recording without the audience noise? This is especially true with live electronic music -- live recordings without audience reactions might as well as be extended remixes. Live 93's crowd reactions are pretty reserved -- mostly limited to the occasional group sigh at the end of a track. The performances are top-notch and I highly recommend Live 93 to anyone who doesn't own it -- essential in my opinion. > Now, as for ISDN by Future Sound of London.. get that! As a collector of live material of various bands (anyone got any Orb bootlegs they wanna trade?), I would have to say that I don't like audience noise because it detracts form the music. Soundboard recordings are _way_ better than audience recordings (ask any Deadhead:) because the sound is being recorded straight from the source. Of course, if you the soundboard mix is fucked up then your tape's gonna be fucked up but most of the time the SBD is the best source to record from. > Live 93's crowd reactions are pretty reserved -- mostly limited to the > occasional group sigh at the end of a track. The performances are > top-notch and I highly recommend Live 93 to anyone who doesn't own it -- > essential in my opinion. The audience sounds from Live 93 are nominal and you don't hear the bass echoing off the walls or anything (like some audience tapes I have). People aren't screaming during the songs or asking someone for a cigarette. I wouldn't let the fact that Live 93 has some audience noises at the beginning and ending of the songs stop me from getting it...it is great CD. I think that the audience noises were put there on purpose to give the album a more "live" feeling and they don't really take away anything from the music. my $0.02, matt ps. As an (ex)Deadhead and a live taper, yeah, soundboards sound good but I've heard alot of nice audience recordings, Orb included. Audience ambience makes me think I'm there. Admittedly the 'dood i am so WASTED' comments I could live without but the 'oh my god this is tripping me out' or 'fucking FAT beats' comments (both evident on an Orb bootleg I heard) *really, really* add to the recording. matter of taste, i suppose. -- wallace winfrey wally@nicar.org 'cause organizational skills kills more devils than bullets # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Latest Orb info: http://www.theorb.com/orbulletins.html -- look here first! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Reverend bluE Subject: (orb) Gong mixes Date: 21 Oct 1997 22:16:49 -0700 (MST) well, I found the gong you remixes double cd. To me, it sounds like live 93 was recorded from soundboard, and then the audience noises are dubbed in. As segues, as somebody pointed out, because the songs are not from a single show, so they used crowd noise to make it seem like they are continual. even soundboard recordings can have crowd noise, if the crowd is loud enough. They were asking $25 or $30 for it, I think. They let me listen to it--it's essentially the full album, but with a bunch of ambient sounds thrown over it. Kinda cheesy, if you ask me. I don't remember seeing anything about the Orb listen on it...although apparently the first release of the UK version of Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld actually had the album cover of Animals as ITS cover, plus the Orb logo.... The version *I* have is black with a purple Orb logo...but the inside DOES have a closeup of the factory pictured on Animals...go figure.... # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Latest Orb info: http://www.theorb.com/orbulletins.html -- look here first! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: rachel@ironlight.com (rachel) Subject: (orb) pink floyd - my 2 cents Date: 28 Oct 1997 09:06:14 -0700 >let me listen to it--it's essentially the full album, but with a bunch >of ambient sounds thrown over it. It's a much less aggressive Download than TEOSP / Furnace. Cevin Key (of skinny puppy) and Philth are behind this Download project that sounds more like FSOL album on certain tracks. Notably missing are the endless ramblings of Genesis. (I do like Genesis, but not in my Download). Actually, my first thought when hearing the new album was "Man they ripped off a lot of Orbisms in this" :) Definately worth checking out - much less violent and disjointed than their previous projects. Date: 29 Oct 1997 15:05:22 -0800 I was just notified by our computer department head that our not-so- friendly webserver is going to be going down...AGAIN...for a few days. SO...if anyone tries to email me in that time, and the message bounces, please resubmit in about a week. It's supPOSED to be down for "the next couple of days," but who knows what this will really translate into??? Anyway, to make this somewhat Orb-related...I thank those of you who responded to my "To Buy Or Not To Buy" dilemma regarding the Live '93 album.... Although there were a few who didn't care for it, the vast majority told me to get it...so, I think I will. I'll also get the FSOL ISDN album.
