That in itself doesn't mean much, as the image could be scanned from a different version than what they stock (the accompanying text doesn't mention the single or that its a 2 CD set), but like I said, I've seen the physical item (with sticker) in at least a couple of their stores. > It was, to my knowledge, released first in the UK and as a result > many copies made their way here as well, and the US release version > did not include the second disc because apparently Island didn't > think US audiences would appreciate it. On a related note, I picked up the "Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld" (Island 162-535 005-2) from Newbury Comics and it was stickered "original unedited UK version 110 minutes." I thought I would share an interesting story with the list: In '96 when Alex toured with Meat Beat Manifesto (for which I have a tattoo on my leg depicting my earlier days of infatuation), I decided to go and see what the deal was. They were playing at Embassy here in Orlando and I wasn't really thrilled about going to see him DJ and not play himself, but I decided that MBM was well worth the $10 or so that I paid. I thought I would bring one something from my Orb collection on the wild chance that I might meet Alex for an autograph. I decided on the Radio Orb promo cassette. It was small and easy to carry. We stayed after the show and hung outside waiting for someone exciting to peek their head out. Jack and I are quite good friends, but you know how hectic it is when you're touring, so I wasn't sure if he'd be acceptable to letting me hang out with them. Well, finally at 2am or so, Jack came out and talked to my friends and myself. I didn't want to sound like a starstruck idiot when I finally caught sight of Alex, but I figured after a few minutes of self-prodding that I would ask him to autograph my cassette. He had a girl on each arm, a drink in his right hand and a big joint in his left. When I asked him, he just looked at me and couldn't really care less. He said, "NO! I'm busy!" I just let it go, but then one of the girls convinced him to sign it for me. The signature ended up being "Love (as a heart) LX '96 ORBLANDO!" I thought that was a pretty neat pun. That's it. Thanks for taking time to listen to my pride. I think the 2 cd version was what came out 1st in the US. it was the only thing I could find for awhile (I thought it was normal). the UK version was just 1 cd, from what I've heard...they could buy the blue room single pretty easily, I guess. the main cds are 2 slightly different colors of light green (me & a friend were both about to put our copies in at the same time) for the 1 & 2cd versions. ant - - # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orb" in the message. # Postings must go to orb@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Latest Orb info: http://www.theorb.com/orbulletins.html -- look here first! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Dec 1997 09:35:31 +1000 From: "Wall - to - Wall" Subject: (orb) Orb in Oz? It was the UK version that didn't include the Blue Room single gratis, probably due to the fact that it was a hit single in the UK and was selling like hotcakes on it's own. > anyone has even accused Island records of making intelligent decisions. Well, let me be the first, then. It showed a lot of intelligence to snap up The Orb when they were shopping for a new label, and managing to license their back catalog was a pretty smooth move on their part, too. I only wish they had been able to get the rest of the Orb's CDSingles. Although, I've noticed that Little Fluffy Clouds is being released on Island, albeit one mix at a time. The original US release of UFOrb had the second disc, so it *was* available domestically. I'm looking at an unopened copy of it and the sticker on the front says: "Sound Warehouse 2/93 $15.99". (Which jibes with my memory of buying it). So, yes, this is a US release. Also, it's not that hard to tell the two releases apart: the 2CD's cardboard box has a second sticker that says: "Special Edition includes bonus CD BLUE ROOM (40 Minute Single) PLUS The U.K. Hit ASSASSIN (Never Before Available) 314 513 749-2" As an aside, I'm overwhelmed by the response to the Aubrey Mixes and UFOrb CDs I put up for sale two days ago. I had no idea so many people were interested and I'm kind of undecided on how to go about this. I don't want to just pick someone at random, so I'll probably put an auction (everybody groans) on my home page (http://www.geocities.com/ResearchTriangle/4959/) Monday and let you all sort it out. OTOH I'm underwhelemed by the response to the offer of uploading Space, Aubrey Mixes, Orbscure Trax, the Assassin singles, the Patterns & Textures CD, the 40 min. Blue Room, the US LFC and PD singles (the out-of-print tracks, anyway -- some of these have resufaced IIRC), and so forth as mp3 files. Is this something that y'all are interested in? Let me know! The 2CD version one of my housemates has looks exactly like the 1 CD version, save these details... 1. The big one. The UPC code for the one disc version is 162-535006-2 The UPC code for the two disc version is 314-513749-2. 2. The liner notes are printed slightly brighter on all the 1 disc versions. 3. The 1 disc version is distributed by Island/Inter-Modo. Island (from all accounts I have ever heard about this) made the decision to drop the second disc. The 2 disc version was distributed by Wau! Mr. Modo, Big Life, & Mercury. 4. Along the spine of the CD case, the liner says merely 'u.f.orb' on the one disc version, and Island Red Label on the top edge. On the 2 disc version, it says 'the orb u.f.orb' and 'big life/mercury' on the top edge. I think possibly you might have this mixed up with some other edit of Blue Room. I have a copy of the 2 CD set (which doesn't belong to me) in my lap at the moment, as well as the 1 CD set I own. Track 2 from the promo CD (titled 'blue room (remix)' 7:37) says it was remixed by Frank de Wulf, and personally, I could care less about it. This 2 disc version was only available in the US. It is also the only way to get the Frank DeWulf Mix on CD. Frank DeWulf aka Rhythm Device, wrote and produced the New Beat song "Acid Rock". It was pretty much a one hit wonder, but I'm sure many of you would remember that song if you heard it. I intend to spend much of the next several weeks not entirely sober (if I'm lucky), and listening to the Orb and other like-minded artists.... Drive my wife nuts. Maybe if the Orb did a remix of Celine Dion (*shiver*), she might listen to them. Well, at least she DOES kinda like Banco de Gaia, so I can't complain TOO much, can I??? :) Take care, everyone, and don't drink and drive (I'm SERIOUS!)--too few people listen to the Orb as it is! I'll be out until January 5.... (I knew there was a reason I got into working for higher education in the first place....) ;) Hopefully, my boss will have a new computer waiting for me when I get back. (And to Mr. Jones--hopefully YOUR boss will get you a cd burner, heh heh....) I'll probably stop up sometime next week to clean my office a bit, so I'll check my email then.... If anyone wants to be exceptionally generous, and get me a copy of Aubrey for Christmas, please wait a couple days for any response. Ok, joke's wearing thin, so, until next year.... Now, I know I've used my quota of questions with the o.o.b.e. book (thank you kindly to everyone who replied, it was all helpful information) but I have one more. I just saw a two CD set, called Textures. One of the discs Alex Patterson mixes himself but there is very little information outside of that. On the box, it does say that the disc contains tracks from Aphex Twin and Biosphere, two of my favs. Is this a complete remix by Patterson or are these some tracks he picked as an intro to ambient and techno? Is it worth it? The place is selling for $20. Thanks everbody, have a great new year.
