A friend let me listen to Ultraworld on cassette in '92. Didn't think much of it because all I wanted to listen to at the time was hardcore techno. (There are days when this is still true, =) But after one ugly day at work, I listened to it on the way home and just mellowed. I actually paid attention to it and was really facinated by the complexity of the music. Ended up getting UF sometime after that and then Ultraworld on CD (the US version first, two years later I got the UK version). Been a fan ever since. I did get to go to the '95 concert in LA which was mind-blowing. I listened to the second disk in its entirety, and I liked it quite a bit--although what's up with the live version of Assassin? I only have the "Oasis of Rhythms" mix from The Blue Room single, and it sounds nothing like the live version. OH well.... I listened to a little bit of the first cd--it was a bit more muddled than the second cd--well, I shouldn't really say that, because I was in a different room than the stereo when I listened to them, so neither was entirely clear.... So, I'll have to listen to them again when I get home tonight. Which will be quite late--I have class tonight after work (masters of education program--my first class in 6 years--any education majors out there who are willing to offer me assistance, it would be greatly appreciated! :) ). Actually, of all electronic musicians, by far the best live (audio quality, that is) is Tangerine Dream...well, their 1970s early 1980s works, anyway.... Riccochet, Pergamnon, Encore, and Warsaw are incredible--except for the very beginning, you can't even tell they are live. So, how are the live bootlegs of the Orb by comparison?
